Frank Miller's interpretation of Will Eisner's SPIRIT is unleashed on this teaser!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... I was completely flummoxed by the anti-Frank Miller tone of Quint's talkback on his unveiling of the poster for Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT. I've grown up with THE SPIRIT - but then my parents ran the first Comic Book shop in Austin - and my house has always had more golden age comics than I've ever seen in any comic shop in the country... Will Eisner was revered in my home - Maybe I'm on crack - but I fucking love FRANK MILLER. He's a giant. And here you have Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT. Not Will Eisner's. Will Eisner never needed to make a movie of THE SPIRIT - because his movies have been drawn, color timed and titled perfectly not on celluloid, but pulp. I never expected to see WILL EISNER'S THE SPIRIT on screen - never really had that dream. Having Frank Miller create WILL EISNER'S THE SPIRIT would be a thankless job. It wouldn't pop and live as art, but as imitation. Frank Miller is doing what he's always done... his interpretation. I love his takes on DAREDEVIL and BATMAN. Personally - I prefer the silverage tellings on DAREDEVIL ... and the Bruce Timm & Alan Burnett and Paul Dini run on BATMAN... But Frank's HARD BOILED and SIN CITY tales? I love them. And Frank Miller is taking THE SPIRIT into the greatest comic book film noir we're likely to ever see. And it's pure Frank Miller... what looks like a tremendous tribute to the industry's greatest eye. Will Eisner.

i've never seen an article double posted before
-
that shit is whack. but the trailer, i like. I'm very much digging the tagline...
-
i have never read the spirit but have seen the covers and interiors...i love the highly stylized version portrayed in the trailer...i'm there!
-
Some very cool shots, but they don't quite have the right flow to them. Comics and film both are visual mediums, but when films are done "comic book" style, they seem static, although aesthetically pleasing. What's interesting is that Miller's comics aren't static at all, but are dynamic and energetic, loose and gritty.
-
Frank did a great job with both Sin City and 300 and this looks just as entertaining. Let's try to have an open mind...
-
jeez, the powers that be are on the ball tonight...
-
Don't be a tosser you slag heap.
-
To the first one who identifies the Morricone score used in the trailer...
-
"Yes, the minute-long trailer put me to sleep." How ever do you make it through an entire feature film?
-
MTV are gimps (that's so funny being called MTV-MTV1 hasn't played a music video in years! LOL). Bollocks to these copyright restrictions-anyone got an un-restriced link they can post?
-
Robert Rodriguez translated Frank Miller's vision to the big screen. Zack Snyder did too. And both were revered for their respect for the original artist and the source material. This shows none of that, and there's no excuse for it. I like Frank Miller's work as much as the next guy, but if he wanted to do more of his usual schtick, he could have used any number of his own creations (or *gasp* created something new). I'm surprised that you're so casually approving about this Harry. It's too bad that this is probably the only film version of Will Eisner's work we'll ever get, because there appears to be little to none of him in it.

I'm still not the hugest fan of the Sin City/300 look, but that looked pretty decent and fits the story. I'm interested in seeing more, which is exactly what a teaser should do.
-
That's the Untouchables theme if I ever heard it.
-
Unfortunatly, I still get the "cannot play outside U.S. due to copyright" message, but appreciate the link anyway matey! :-) Any fellow plucky Brits out there managed to see this trailer yet?
-
..let's consider the greater implications success with THE SPIRIT might suggest: if this, along with WATCHMEN, makes money, can we expect to see a DKN film directed by Frank Miller in the near future? What if Marvel, by way of success with their self-produced IRON MAN, chose to reboot DAREDEVIL ala HULK and lets FM take a crack at it?
-
I know that he should be allowed to ripoff his own work if anyone should, but you have to do something new or suggest something new at this point at least.
-
I hate when mtv gets the exclusive trailers and music videos and only stream them in the US. Someone needs to youtube this shit.
-
it was called Batman, Daredevil, Sin City, The Shadow and the Untouchables. Fuck Hollywood must be hard up.
-
I liked it alot, I cant wait for it to come out.
-
Give it about 10 minutes.
-
I wouldn't even download it
-
I mean, props for using the Untouchables opening theme, but that is all. Looks stiff and lifeless - not unlike a B&W Dick Tracy (the Warren Beatty movie, not the strip).
I'm no Will Eisner exegete so I might be wrong, but it looks like a pet project greenlit in the wake of the 300 and Sin City success, and handed on a silver plate to Miller who'll make whatever derivative movie he wants. Not interested unless the full-length trailer unveils good performances. But I sure hope I'm wrong and it'll kick ass - for all the genuine Spirit fans ou there who know probably better than me. -
I'm just sorry this has to have Eva Mendez in it. Perhaps when she's finally sucked every cock in Hollywood people will stop casting her in all these big movies.
-
...(which will probly be the mainstream here) that looked really bad. Like a fan vid on You Tube. I've already seen this movie. It was called Batman. Do we really need MORE dark vigilantes in stylized worlds? Isn't Batman and Sin City enough? what the hell happened to Sin City 2?
-
That had nothing worth caring about in it. Nothing.
-
Yeah, we all remember how good she was in Ghost Rider.
-
Mine is that they'll reboot Iron Man first. And give it to James Cameron.
-
by the general audience?
-
to get some cool news that wasn't about the Spirit. Come on guys, you can do it!
-
I found it on another site, but haven't seen it on Aintitcool yet. That's certainly more worth talking about than this meaningless and substanceless teaser.
-
I keep waiting to see it here. They have to know about it by now.
-
That's probably the only thing this movie has going for it.
-
You're absolutely right. Although I never thought I'd witness the possibility of a relatively faithful Alan Moore adaptation in the same year that a woman or black guy might become president.

Apparently, the Narnia films are going to end after the third one now, too. So much for that crappiness. -
lame.
-
You know some people are going to snicker at that in theaters
-
but it looks like something someone made on a low budget trying to imitate Sin City. The guy practically falls half the time he's wire jumping.
-
Agreed on all points.
-
And the world lets out a collective snicker.
-
Well, since Silver isn't the producer, I guess it's not definite yet, but still, yay. I actually didn't really have much against the movie, except I didn't want Nolan to get annoyed by it and not want to do a Batman 3, lol.
Also, as long as I am thanking people for links, thanks Blueberry for the HD link. :P Trailer's... not really anything special, but, having never read the Spirit and not having any stake in the character, I'm still interested in this one. I just wanna see some actual movie stuff. The trailer kind of fluctuated between looking cool and looking silly, I think... -
What's with all the cats? The red tie standing out made it look ridiculous; I was expecting him to hit the streets and drive away in a red Scion XB. Seriously, Miller..give us something better than this.
-
Nothing is cinematic in this trailer, it's just shots taken from a comic book and made live. It sucks bigtime, it's not cinema, but Miller's indulgence.
-
Justice League is shit canned.
-
a grittier DD or a big screen Dark Knight Returns would be sweet, no doubt about that... but I'm more comfortable with talented and/or established directors working closely with Miller rather than his own take on the material. Believe me I'm not jaded, but it irritates me when the fanboy gospel - when echoed by clueless studio decisions, see my previous post - leads to catastrophic results.
So how about a DKR movie written by Miller and directed by Eastwood? Deal? -
did I love it to watch it three times over? I think these green screen films have potential, but in my opinion only Sky Captains and Sin City managed to really capitalize on the possibilities. I really want Miller to prove himself again, but I can't help but be just a little cynical after his All Star Batman & Robin run.
-
besides Miller wrote Sheena in 1984 AND Sheena the TV series AND that's it. Je. Sus. Wept.
-
...and indistinguishable from Sin City. Frank Miller can go suck a big cock in hell. Hack.
-
Someone needs to fire the wire work team!
-
What is this crap?
Spirit should be more like Dick Tracy and less like Frank Miller's ego. -
It's that notorious parody TDK alternate ending which, judging from all the youtube comments, will either make you feel blinding white hate, or laugh your ass off. Its been up for a couple days already but I was surprised nobody here mention it yet and I was wondering what the AICN community would say: http://tinyurl.com/5hnh4u
-
What are you, dense? Are you retarded or something? Who the hell do you think I am? I'm the goddamn Spirit!
-
i love Miller's work.. i have a shelf full of his stuff... but it was a mistake to let him make this look and sound like Sin City. You can usually get away with "more of the same" in comic books, but in films it's a recipe for empty theatres if people feel like they've already seen it.
-
ruining Sin City 2, Miller. Rodriguez needs to dump Miller for a different, BETTER, comic-strip artist like Jim Davis.
-
That was somewhat funny. Especially the "I'm a fuckin crimefighting machine" and the fake Jim Gordon was funny too. Overall, it's better than most "funny" fan films hitting YouTube.
That being said, it was tasteless, really. I can understand some people being mad at it. -
some Variety interview with JC (the other one) about the FUTURE of cinema. Terrific read, albeit a bit technical, but last time I checked the TB were the geek headquarter, no? No.
Anyway, since we'll probably never get the second part of Cameron's phone interview from last year (along with the WalterB Q&A, but that's another story...): http://tinyurl.com/5evplw -
http://tinyurl.com/3fedpq It couldn't be worse than "My mother, my lover"
-
ewww. all that made me want to do is go watch the untouchables.
utter nonsense. stylized crap. and like, its miller's style, sure. but not Eisners. Its a damn damn shame. not that a Spirit movie in Eisner's style can work. maybe animated. like New Frontier. Now that kicked ass btw. this looks like a stale retread of a movie i hated the first time. cept he's batman in a suit.
stupid stupid stupid. i award frank miller no points. -
Thats a really interesting article and for some reason I'm really surprised at how articulate Cameron is, though I shouldn't be I guess. Also about that youtube vid, while I felt really guilty I laughed my ass off and watched it 5 times. I got similar reactions from 2 of my friends and another told me off. It reminded my of the Steve Irwin jokes South Park made like a week after his death. However most of the humor, for me was in the over the top Bale impression and retard Gordon. In conclusion I'm going to hell.
-
It's when he starts to take himself too seriously that he begins to sound like someone else parodying his work. The man certainly is talented. I just don't know how consistent he is.
-
I like that about it... and the more simple, elegant look appeals to me more too. Call me crazy but this actually made me intrigued to see this for the first time since I heard about it.
-
Lalalalala.
-
holy shit that was awesomely fuckin AWFUL.
-
Let's make it a new catchphrase.
-
No, seriously. I'm seeing this as soon as I can.
-
but you first, for misspelling my handle^^
Seriously though, I loved the Bale impersonnation as well, but I spent so much time defending his weird voice in Batman Begins that I feel a little bad now.
However - and like very ofen in this kind of video - the users comments on YouTube are even funnier than the video. Except for Gordon calling Moms Joker - this can't be beaten. -
Merrick will have a field day with that.
-
What a waste of money. How about hiring a "cats tamer" or something, Frank.
-
...to Will Eisner's The Spirit, sans the gratuitous pose at the beginning of the teaser, is a shithead. Plain and simple. I profess no love for Harry Knowles, but dude... if you have any respect for Will Eisner, you'll make sure no one ever sees this movie. You see, Miller's always had a hard-on for The Spirit - and Will's death in '05 gave him exactly the opportunity he needed to steal the rights to that idea and make it his own. Frank Miller to Will Eisner is just like George Lucas to Kurosawa - both men have displayed the talent to do great work, but they are one trick ponies, riding off the success of being at the right place at the right time in their industries.
-
Stiff attempt at SC2. Yawn.
-
Sorry Frank, you lost me at "The city is my mother." I know Denny Colt and this isn't Denny Colt.
He's officially lost it. -
They had to use fake cats because real cats were too disrespectful and uncooperative to get their scene right. Or, maybe they were just too dumb. The super- cool thing about CGI cats is their elimination is merely one delete button away! That is bliss.
-
...are you on the gak?!!? It looks like Spirit City or something.... and it's set in modern day? Yeah, Frank... that'll work. I mean I loved Miller's Daredevil, Batman and Sin City, too, but laet's face it... the man's been slipping in recent years. Case in point: Dark Knight Returns 2 (nuff said). I guess I can hope for the best for now, but from what I've seen so far... I got major problems with it... sorry.
-
Will Eisners The Spirit.Ive been going to Comic Con for the past Decade and Have been to 3 or 4 Spirit Pannels and EVERYTIME that annoying Fat Lady/Producer and even Miller HIMSELF has done nothing but promote this AS WILL EISNERS THE SPIRIT.
NOW THERES NOTHING of that whatsoever.I HOPE THIS FAILS BECUASE MILLER IS A GREAT COMIC WRITER BUT HE'S A ONE TRICK PONY,HE CAN ONLY WRITE BASASSES NOTHING MORE. -
and bears absolutely no resemblance to The Spirit. It's time for SINO to take it's place in box office disaster history. Can this fucker do anything but this bullshit? He's almost as bad as Shamalamadingdong and his shitty twist endings anymore. Except now he's doing shitty B&W computer cartoon movies.
-
However, the combination looks pretty cool. I guess like mixing chocolate and peanut butter, or putting a pirate costume on a kangaroo, you never know 'til you try.
-
I have been saying that for some time. Congrats for jumping aboard the TomBodet express.
-
You know it's true.
-
... I wanna see CGI kangaroos-in-pirate-suits! You KNOW I'm right!
-
Understand it however you wish.
-
... Sure it sucked ass, but it was a pretty shitty comic, too. Mark Stephen Johnson and Nicolas Cage captured that half-assed lameness on celluloid perfectly... Of, course, it wasn't on purpose, but still...
-
...after the teaser, it suddenly becomes Bill Hader talking about a feature version of Laser Cats being rejected. (Hmmm... if it ever did get greenlighted, wonder if they use CGI fake-looking cat puppets? Hey! How about a feature version of Toonces?! Or did they already do that and call it Garfield?
-
I'm impressed...FM might be a great director along with being a great graphic novelist. We'll see when it comes out.
-
Agreed on HBO Fables (even though i don't worship that series like some). In fact, I'd like to see tv/film adaptations of just about any Vertigo series (ESPECIALLY DMZ). Though I'm not sure Preacher will translate well to another medium.
-
I had to read that book for some time before I really understood what people were talking about. Once you figure out the mythology made of mythologies that Fables is creating, and once you really get into the characters, then that series can really blow you away.
I think that a television show would be a wonderful format for Fables. The special effects might be prohibitive, though. I don't think you actually need to make it R-rated. Most of the issues could be read by younger kids, even if there is a violent or perverse one every now and again.
I think 100 Bullets would be the most television ready comic book out there. A mixture of story arc and standalone episodes would be a perfect fit. Why television hasn't realized how many great series are already out there, I have no idea. You would think at least one series would have been picked up by now. -
I might be too violent for anything outside HBO. They really missed the bandwagon by making Y:TLM a movie instead of a tv series. I mean it would have been relatively cheap compared to other comics, and even if you make it into 3 movies you're going to cut out a lot of good stuff in 7hrs.

Also when was the last time we heard about HBO's Preacher?
by blindambition238
The last bit of news was that cool bit about MSJ trying to get Cronenberg, Del Toro, and others to direct story arcs. But that was like ages ago.

-
I met him at the San Diego Comic Con back in the mid 90s and I could've sworn the guy had just done a ton of smack. Hell, he could've been in Requiem For A Dream...
-
I can't even comprehend how totally awesome it would be. Well, the two seasons that HBO would produce before cancelling it, that is...
-
Gawd- wake me up when it's some what close!
-
The teaser gave me goosebumps, but I'm confused about the part where the girls are showing off sunglasses.
-
What, you were expecting him to imitate the comics? Frank never said he would do that, he said he would be respectful. This is his style, and so it's ridiculous to expect him to do anything different.
-
I didn't know what else to expect. It just looks like a movie Frank Miller made. Fuck it.
-
Too bad it will probably bomb because about a gazillion people will get it confused with Sin City, realize it's not, and can it because it isn't. i was not very excited before but I'm excited now. but if any comic book movie deserves some more vibrant color, it's probably this one. I don't care if Eisner originally intended for the costume to be black, blue works much better on a pulpy comic level.
-
the Spirit moves a little awkardly? like when he's bounding on the wire, it's in slow motion or something. It's a little weird.
-
Fables should defnitely be on HBO. That would be the coolest thing ever, the bees knees, the shrimp on my toast.
-
And I'm really wanting to see it. The actors voice sounds cool as hell. The way he hovers a bit while running across the wire in between steps is SWEET. And I like the way he looks a little off balance when doing his roof jump thing.
I realize now that this is his interpretation of The Spirit. I've never read the book so it's not bothering me that the look is similar to Sin Sity...but really i think it just looks like The Spirit comic book, if Frank Miller drew/wrote it. So I'm fine with this. If this is how he feels most comfortable jumping back into the film game, I say give him a shot. -
frank miller might just have some tricks up his sleeve on this one. yeah, it has a sin city flavor to it but that doesn't bother me so much. a lot of good director's films have recurring visual styles. i am having a difficult time understanding the negative comments about frank miller and his work on this film. the trailer looks good to me. i can't trash this one yet. i want to actually watch the film first.
-
Excessive CGI background!! No more real set filming! someone please invent a time machine, i need to go back to the old days when movies have real sense of locations
-
sin city
-
Miller is a professed Eisner fan, and I'm sure that whatever he's put on film will not disrespect the man or his work. I, personally, am a big Miller fan and will definitely check this out when it's released.
Maybe Miller can direct a new Robocop film sometime in the future. Even better, maybe he can use CGI and whatever they can scrape together to re-edit Robocop 2 into something that is closer to Miller's original script. -
...I am NOT seeing it in theaters based on what I've seen thus far. It's a DVD...but likely still a DVD purchase. Just 'cause I'm sick like that. I own Bayformers for Christ's sake!!
-
Guys, seriously, you're pretty stupid.
Why did nobody complain when Batman was suddenly wearing black? He was originally drawn wearing blue...
Why did nobody complain when Frank Miller wrote a mature Batman story? He was publically accepted as a bit of a camp fool up until then.
Why did nobody complain when Frank Miller interpreted the story of Thermopylae into his style, as a campfire tale that boosted the event's legacy?
This entire site is full of people who need something to bitch about... Go bitch about how stupid GI Joe looks, because it does. This is Miller's style, so get used to it or go fuck yourself. -
This is one of the coolest looking movies I've ever seen, and the narration is perfect. The Untouchables theme is the icing on the cake. I'm not getting the Dick Tracy references. My God, he wears an overcoat, tie, and fedora. He must be Warren Beatty. Oh shit, he looks kinda like The Question, too!!!!

I like the way the city looks, the way he runs and jumps over the rooftops. I think it looks insanley cool. that song fits the trailer perfectly too. Iam just worried about eva mendes, she cant act for shit, and that interview! "I dont know what the script is about*giggles*" dumb bitch
-
badnassness! I can't wait... I know jack about the comic book or even less about frank miller other than sin city's movie... but this looks pretty insane
-
and he better leave in eisner's double entendre's and tongue in cheek humor...please frank, will was your friend...dont fuck him

Bring on the 820 pages of corny hard boiled narration! -
I'm not crazy about the Sim-City-ish psuedo-comic-book look, but based on what i see there i'll give this one a chance.

So you fanboys can relax.

Miller want to nuke Irak, why is america promoting this guy to director's title ? Since when nazi morons have a right to speak and make movies out of classics american comics, destroyed them in the process, transforming them into nazi propaganda ?

He is not a nazi. Just off his head on drugs and drinks.
-
Deep breath..don't get angry.
But anyway, will the public be green screen fatigued after this?
And will The Spirit get to find Sand Serif and bring her in...? -
Just read some actual Spirit strips. Just pick up the Best of the Spirit and read the story of Gerhard Schnobble. WILL EISNER WAS AMAZING... THIS IS ANYTHING BUT! I am so sad right now. This could have been right it really could have.

My buddy was at the NY Comic Con today and Frank Miller said he was leaving in the stumble as a gift to Will cause it made him more human....word!

Moving on...

Yeah, this will be a success. Sin City - ultra violence
by david cloverfield
In the style of Sin City, with a more audience friendly character, and no teared off cocks - I think that was the studios idea. It's that exactly. I liked the way he ran on the rooftops, that gave it a good, cheesy feel but I'll have to see more before I can give an opinion. All I know it will make money Sin City couldn't dream of.
-
I thought this trailer was fucking awesome
-
All of the haters don't really mind shit, as long as it's spoon fed to them. Sheesh.
-
Tell them to rate this movie PG also.
-
gotham night you are a fucking loser
-
If this nose-dives, maybe Michael Chabon will leap up and decide that the Escapist should go to the screen and we can get a roundabout Spirit. This delirium was brought to you by absynthe and baying at the moon all night.
-
Harry, people don't want to see Sin City: The Spirit. They just want to see The Spirit. This looks like cock in the face. Miller has lost it.
-
The Spirit likes to keep it in the family.
-
With an all new cast. And the real Kingpin & Bullseye this time.
-
FUCK OFF HATERRRRRRS.
-
Coming from people who never kissed a girl in real life, make me laugh.
-
Best thing in the trailer, "I'm on my way out at the bottom of the box office", Frank, you tarnished your legacy, and Will's too.
-
Harry You are soo wrong. Don't apologize for derivative crap masquerading as THE classic comic book character. You probably also love every Danny Elfman score, because he always "interprets" each film so uniquely. Is a shit sandwich an "interpretation" of a cheeseburger? I don't want Frank Miller's shit sandwich!
stuffdaddy.blogspot.com
I am not going to over judge the Coked-up Raymond Chandler finds Metropolitan Theology soaked monologue that is contained in this heartfelt, well intentioned, piece of crap that is passing for the first Spirit trailer.. but I love The Spirit. I'm not going to gush, but let's say I've read around 93% of Will Eisner's work. He is the first great complete artist (art and script) of the comic book art form. Frank Miller knew Eisner. He loved him. I believe that Frank Miller wants to do right by him. I want him to as well. Other than Watchmen, there is no "comic to film" property that I would rather see succeed.
But I have to ask, "who was this guy talking in this trailer?"
"That was The Spirit?"
"The Spirit is running and jumping across roof tops, while engaging in metaphoric soliloquy?"
(not going to complain about the hokey cg jumping, because I believe that's on purpose)
Denny Colt......The Spirit, is a "man's man." He's a classic good guy hero; charming, good natured, lovable, punch drunk, and extremely hard to kill. This is not a man who thinks about the nature of heroes and totems as it relates to himself and his city!!Where did this "My City" crap come from? He's not Batman! Since when is The Spirit, a dark vigilante who dances upon the city skyline like DareDevil in a dark duster? Where is the brutish, but lovable guy in the blue suit? Where is the gloved underdog, who seemed more a mix between Cary Grant and Li'l Abner? I keep ranting here stuffdaddy.blogspot.com -
Is Elliot Ness in this, too??
-
Apparently for Frank Miller, "moving forward" means "totally ignore what Eisner did to make the Spirit unique and memorable and turn it into a clone of SIN CITY." "My city screams"-- what the hell is that?!? Eisner's Spirit was a fun adventure comic that often focused on the everyday people populating the city-- sometimes the Spirit would only show up for a few panels. It looks like Frank Miller only knows how to do one thing anymore: over-the-top film noir dialogue and shitty CGI-filled images.
-
I know 'The Spirit', both the original Will Eisner strip and Darwyn Cooke's recent revival. Though that may be Frank Miller's "Take" on the material, it still looks like shit. Should have just made Sin City 2.
-
I just really hope that they're will be more color in the film than apparent in the trailer and sin city. This looks kinda drab and if anything the spirit comics were pretty vibrant.
-
Apr 20, 2008 10:07:44 AM CDT
I've been masturbating to this trailer for a day...
by robots in das guys
But I had yet to see that video interview with Miller wearing that ultra cheap red tie. WTF?
-
...how much gay sex did Miller promise you to actually think his stuff is that great, and to buy into his hackneyed, egotistic bullshit belief that somehow, Frank Miller's lacking in vision vision of Will Eisner's The Spirit is somehow better than the real deal?
Fuck Frank Miller, and fuck his ego for taking on this project.
I'd have rather seen someone like Sam Raimi take it on, or someone else who isn't a nihilistic, pessimistic asshole who believes heroism is cliched and non-existent and empty.
Doc C -
DARWYN COOKE GOT IT RIGHT WITH HIS TWELVE ISSUES!
And I suspect Sergio Aragones will get it right as well.
But fucking Frank Miller has it all wrong.
Should've gone with a script by Darwyn Cooke (along with a second role as art director) and a director like Richard Donner.
Now that...that would be genius. Donner and Cooke...a masterpiece.
Frank Miller will only give us more of his overwrought and long-ago uninteresting shit.
And Harry Knowles-Nothing-At-All will continue to blindly fellate Miller for a chance to eat some dip on the movie's catering table.
*Sigh*
Doc C -
It doesn't take much to excite me sometimes (with stamper's mother being a great example of that) but this left me cold and limp (also like stamper's mom, unless a bottle of Jack is involved). Too deriative, uninspired, hammy, and plain boring. See it before a million times. Yawn, next.
-
But don't worry I have some anti acids in the cabinet.
-
Why adapt the spirit if you're gonna ignore the Spirit of the spirit? Making things darker certainly does not make them cooler. Frank Miller has a hangup on the success of the sin city movie. That movie is okay. I look at it as an interesting experiment. Something that hadn't been done before on that level. And you always need a movie like that to exist as the foundation for bigger and better things. So here comes frank miller again... doing the exact same thing. Sin City was far from a work of perfection. The biggest inherent flaw being the lack of cohesion between the physical beings and their environment. They looked like 2 different worlds. The people looked like people filmed black and white, and the backgrounds looked like computer animations or cartoons. That works if that's what you're going for, Pagemaster, Cool World, ROger Rabbit. But in this case, it doesn't work because these people are supposed to be part of the same world. A lot of work had to be done with that movie in rendering the backgrounds to look less sharp, glossy and CG than they appeared. There needed to be more filters and more grain. That way everything fit. Miller is making the same mistake here.

to paraphrase Harrison Ford, 'he can type this shit, but they sure as hell can't say it.'
-
And I wield the power of clichés.
-
"Making things darker certainly does not make them cooler."
This is true, but it doesn't get said nearly often enough. I think the design precedents set by Frank Miller's/Tim Burton's Batman (while innovative and striking at the time, and coherent within Burton's larger body of work) have tarnished practically every comic book film adaptation since. It never ceases to amaze me how people can suspend their disbelief for all manner of supernatural abilities, backstories, etc. and yet balk at the idea of a character being portrayed as he/she/it is in the original comics. The arch seriousness of many of these films (often attempted by lazily slapping on some techno-bondage black & silver costume details), imo, only serves to amplify the underlying silliness of the characters. -
"It's too bad that this is probably the only film version of Will Eisner's work we'll ever get, because there appears to be little to none of him in it."
Seriously. At this point I've pretty much given up on griping about it. My brother Phil gave me a different perspective on it, saying that Miller's just trying to do what he knows. He didn't write or draw The Spirit and he has never directed a movie before, so he's going to do what he knows. That sort of made me more empathetic to Miller's view.
I still don't buy Miller's excuse though. What he considers a bold new direction that Eisner would have wanted is just a re-hash of a better movie that was already done 3 years ago. I'm sure Eisner would have liked to have seen something of his translate to the screen rather than Miller pretty much co-opting the thing as his own character. Whatever, maybe someone in the future will get it right. -
I'm sorry, but Frank Miller seems to have made a serious error. Not only has he butchered the source material, but he has also plagiarized his own previous material (it really does seem like a pseudo sequel to Sin City).
-
The last line of the trailer is "I'm on my way," isn't it? Wasn't that the tagline for Beatty's Dick Tracy? And kind of the defining line of the character? That one really stood out to me.
-
-this is it. We've seen these visuals in Sin City already. And they at least looked interesting in the trailers. This looks like the same thing with boring ass characters that no one but the comic book history buffs will give a crap about. To the typical trailer watcher this looks like a bunch of gimmicks and storylines we've already seen in too many comic book movies. And worse, it looks like hokey crap on top of it that doesn't look like it's worth seeing. I won't be surprised to see this fail. I understand wanting to bring Will Eisner's vision to the masses, but this is simply not it. This is Frank Miller going into his Sin City universe and going to a slightly happier and maybe less violent metropolis than Basin City and dropping in his versions of characters he liked from Will Eisner's The Spirit.
Go away Frank and don't come back until the real Sin City 2 is done. -
look like those old Sprite commercials?
-
This is Shit! Will Eisner's Spirit?
Frank Miller's Ego, That's what this is!!!! -
but like most everyone else on here, it just looked like Sin City - with a god-awful "Max Payne" style voiceover.
Nope - it does absolutely nothing for me.
-
Seems rushed and unfortunately compared to Sin City as that "look" has been done. Screwed over the Matrix sequels and its gonna happen here.
-
HD link is dead, and MTV hates Canadians soooo.....
Also if the trailer is as lame as everyone is saying, then I'm wondering why the hell they delayed SIN CITY 2 for this?? -
Saw the Spirit trailer and was totally bored by what I saw. People actually started walking out as the trailer was being played. That whole "my city screams" shit aint Eisner it's all Miller in Sin City mode. I'm no film-maker but I think the Spirit should have been shot (as others have mentioned) like Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy. This whole green/blue screen movie crap is getting out of hand. Hope Miller proves me wrong.
-
It used to be if you wanted anything adapted correctly, you'd hope it would be animated.
Comic movies have come a long way, but some properties just can't get a break.
So I say we need a BRUCE TIMM take on The Spirit. Animated films released in the theater. Big name voice casting.
Imagine masterpieces featuring Denny Colt with the quality of Mask of the Phantasm.
Oh, and fuck Frank Miller and his cheap red tie.
Doc -
do talkbackers basically post more because they actual have an idea or because they know that if they make wild ridiculous claims about something sucking or someone being a "fuck" it gets their ideas a little attention? I really hate people trying to be critics for the sake for itself. Honestly I've seen Harry and most other AICN contributors do it as well so they're not really helping.
-
It just bothers me when I see people calling someone an asshole because they don't like their movie. That's seriously one of the worst elements about this web site.
-
The motion looks strange but compelling and certainly fits with Eisner's dramatic/goofy creation...could it be Miller is creating something revolutionary here, making a true cartoon movie? Can't wait to see how all those fine dames look in action. And the Motherfucking Octopus!
I think its daring, after the failure of Daredevil, to do the action in such an over the top way, but the way he's handling it, with this style, it looks great. -
knew and respected Eisner doesn't mean he should get a pass on changing it. Spielberg knew and respected Kubrick, but he still fucked up A.I. Why? Because he tried to meld the styles and failed miserably, just as Miller is trying to meld the styles. You can't Hardboil Eisner -- he ain't a mafuckin' egg.
-
Loved both 300 and Sin City, but this looks rather shite. It had me right up until I hit play on the trailer... Ugh. What an awful trailer.
-
You're a fuck.
And though you don't have a movie out, you're an asshole.
How's that for talkback?
If you don't like it here, STFU and go somewhere else.
Doc -
Looks just like Sin City. I'll see it anyway.
-
Wow, I'm a fuck? Am I smelly and a stupid head as well? What a loser. This is definitely the worst characteristics of fanboys. Oh, man... Jeane Grey's hair wasn't the right color too!! Brian Singer's a fuck!
-
I think FM has just nailed ther coffin shut on Sin City 2. Even if by some chance this turns out to be good, two films in this style is probably enough. Shame, as I'd rather see Sin City 2 than this.

Blasting Open The Grave Fucking Eisner's Eye Socket
by grinning white skull
If this were DAREDEVIL or BATMAN I'd be ecstatic with the dark serious tone and superhero rooftop antics. Tragically Miller's retread of such earlier work channeled through THE SPIRIT is nothing less than a goddamn ego-driven mind fuck. Gone is the fun, romance and satire that Eisner used so brilliantly to simultaneously embrace and mock the comic book hero world while always ALWAYS balancing it all with a kindred love for the fragile chaotic frailties and emotions of the best and the worst in our humanity. Viewing this trailer reminds me of something Miller has often said, "You can't polish a turd."
-
The dude makes two kick-arse movies in a row and somehow that justifies all your doubt? You're all on fucking crack, seriously..
-
What a god-awful piece of shit!
Who are they aiming this film at?
Any person who even has a passing interest in films (in general, not even simply action/superhero flicks) will take one look at this cheap looking, cheesy sounding dump of a trailer and dismiss it instantly.
If the final film action is as poorly executed as that laughable 'stumble over the rooftops', it's gonna truly kill Miller's film career. I've seen better flash animation than that (WAY better). The poor dude looks like they wired him up to the crane wrong, and might actually be hanging from his cock.
Simply bad. In a lot of ways.
Bring back Dick Tracy: "I'm on my way"
Can you say "rip-off"? -
It's Will Eisner love.. Big difference..
-
He helped Robert Rodriquez make Sin City, which was his comic book. He has never directed a movie on his own.. 300, another of his books, was directed by Zack Snyder.. He had no involvement. Cheers!
-
Brad Bird has long wanted to make a Spirit animated feature. That idea died, because, just when Bird had come into his own with his last two successes, Miller had acquired the job. Perhaps the damnedest shame of all.
-
That had to be the worst usage of wire-work I have ever seen. That guy showed absolutely no weight at all and for the most part looked like he was walking on ice. I'm sorry, but that was CHARLIES ANGELS bad.
-
That's not the Spirit, that's Marv with a mask and without his "condition."
-
I mean, I could see die hard comic fans appreciating the over-the-top element of the film that translates to comic expression, but it really doesn't look that fantastic otherwise. The style has been done before in film, and even done better by Miller himself.
-
Fuck ya'll. This is classic Film Noir look and narration. Miller is the modern day master of Noir storytelling, and this trailer is goddamn beautiful. I don't give two shits from Shinola if it is different from the comic. This is a truly beautiful piece of art, and the movie is probably going to be even better. Fuck all'ya haters.
-
"Miler is the modern day master of Noir storytelling"? So basically you don't know fuck-all about noir, it's just a word you apply to over-shadowed compositions with bullshit, phony tough-guy dialogue.
