Baby Greedo looks at TEACHING MRS TINGLE!!!

Published at:  May 24, 1999 1:29:51 PM CDT

Well folks, here's a review from Baby Greedo of a test screening for TEACHING MRS TINGLE. It stays mainly out of spoilers here, but seems to be disappointed with the movie. Well, let's see what others have to say before we get too worried, it's not all bad in the review...

Hey Harry, was able to get into an advance marketing screening of "Teaching
Mrs. Tingle." I'm sure you've heard of it, but for those who haven't it's
written and directed by Kevin Williamson, and stars Katie Holmes, Jreffrey
Tambor (LARRY SANDERS SHOW), and Helen Mirren as Mrs. Tingle. There are some
cameos by Molly Ringwald, Vivica A. Fox and Michael McKean.

I was really excited about seeing the movie. I mean, Katie Holmes is an
instant thumbs up.. and seeing Molly on screen is a definute plus....

Here's the basic rundown. Katie Holmes is an A student struggling to become
valedictorian so she can get a scholarship to go to college. She needs the
money in a bad way. She's in a race between a super-bitch rich girl who
doesn't need the scholarship.

Her school rank all comes down to this one project for history. The only
problem is that the teacher, Mrs. Tingle, is to teaching as the drill
sergeant from "Full Metal Jacket" is to the military. Katie Holmes does a
good job on the project, but Tingle instantly hates it.

So now Katie Holmes has to study extra hard for the final exam, hoping that
will boost her grade. In walks her two friends: one, Jo Lynn (Marisa
Coughlan), an inspiring actress, and Barry, the typical drunk guy trying to
make good.

Barry snags a copy of Tingle's final exam, gives it to Katie Holmes, but she
doesn't want anything to do with it. And as luck would have it, good ol'
Tingle comes in right as Katie is trying to give the exam back.

The rest of the movie is a cross between "Misery" and a bad Dawson's Creek
episode. There is one or two funny scenes, but the rest of the movie is
really disappointing. Sure, you get to see Katie Holmes in a bra, but even
that doesn't make up for the rest of the film. Everyone in the cast does a
great job, especially Jeffrey Tambor, but the movie never kicks into the next
level. And the ending, besides being super-lame, is really disappointing.

I'm almost positive that this is the finished product as far as the film is
concerned, although my friend swears to me that a lot of the music was from
TO DIE FOR. I should also warn people expecting to see a Kevin Williamson
horror movie: the only scary thing in this movie is the plot!

This is, however, the only movie that you'll ever hear the following
sentence: "You're a Tingle in sheep's clothing!"

One of those love it or hate it films.

    by jay g

The script was brilliant, but Tingle is definitely going to be one of those movies that people either loathe or hate.
Here's an excerpt from the script...

  • I dunno....I mean it sounds interesting....but how can you beat Election? That movie fuckin' rocked!!!! I laughed harder during Election than I did during There's Somehting About Mary. I don't know how you could get a better "A" student character than Flick (Reese Witherspoon). The movie was pure genius - each scene lead perfectly into the next. My favorite film this year! So, the bar has really been raised, IMO, for dark high school comedies - this one's got a lot to live up to.

Damn Right, PDaddy - "Election" rules

    by smilin'jackruby

"Election," for those that haven't seen it, is a phenomenal picture. Movies like this don't come out all that often and I encourage everyone to see it. The scene where Witherspoon as Flick jumps up and down for joy in the hallway is one of the most startlingly accurate portrayals of high school bullshit I've ever seen. It's a small thing, but when you see it, you'll know what I mean. It doesn't try to make high school students out to be 21 year-olds like "90210" or something, it just presents what high school really was like in many respects (though my high school had hardly as much student-teacher intrigue).

Kevin Williamson is the biggest pussy filmmaker alive!

    by paragonian

Killing Mrs. Tingle was such a better title, but "The Pussy" had to change it and give these scumbag killers in Colorado enough power to not only shake up Congress and the NRA, but to change titles of fucking movies. I'll admit that the first two thirds of Scream and some of the Dawsons Creek episodes were really good but I don't think that Kevin is ever gonna repeat that success cause he's a HACK. It amazes me how many hacks are making it in films these days, we need more KUBRICKS damn it!

I would rather shave my balls than watch this film.

    by zerocool

If for nothing else than to keep the single digit that would represent me from registering on some stupid marketing report, showing that YES, YOU TOO AND KILL A BUNCH OF PEOPLE AND INFLUENCE THE CHANGE OF MAJOR MOTION PICTURES!
If you want a funny comedy involving teens, check out "Election" (It is without a doubt, the funniest film I've seen all year.) or stay home and watch the new season of "That 70's Show".

I Came To This Article For One Reason And One Reason Only...

    by justin sane

...As I read the title for the article, I was taken aback for a moment that for some reason the title had been changed. Then, as I thought about it, the blood began to rush to my head. I, like others, am against Williamson and all the fluffy, stupid crap be writes (I think Scream is as fluff as horror can GET), and this whole debacle even makes me MORE enraged. The first question out of my mouth was going to be "Was the title changed because of all of that Colorado bullshit?!", but thankfully a couple of Talkbackers answered my question before I could ask. I think I'll picket this movie when it comes out and shoot squirtguns at the attendees. ;-)

    by zerocool

Okay, Ryalto! I did and gosh it's so sensitive! This is so much more fun than sitting through another piece of Kevin Williamson's crap! I think I'll stay home and play with myself the day this movie opens, yeah there's a decent use of my time compared to the stupidity of watching this film!

    Katie Holmes

    by mathias

What is it about her? Why is everyone going crazy for that girl? what's so sexy about constantly looking bored? I mean just look at the movie posters for Disturbing Behavior of GO. It's this fucking what-do-i-care look, that's really starting to become annoying. The same shit that is killing Dawson's Creek. I'm really getting tired of this. Smile but once! Oh sorry I forgot that is hip...
Williamson really has to work on this because it's becoming a tired cliche. Let her play different roles please, not the same character with different names over and over again.

Williamsons 15 minutes of fame are over

    by hal9000

Teaching Mrs. Tingle will only be the beginning of Kevin Williamsons downfall, the icing on the cake will be Scream 3. This movie sounded cool a year ago, but the constant delays and dismal title change pretty much guarantees that the film will suck miserably. Despite the fact that there were a handful of cool elements, The Faculty was a disappointment. The fact that Williamson slapped his name on it for a hefty payday even though he did a few measly drafts is shameless. The Weinsteins have no balls anymore, look what's happening with Dogma. I'm sure that The Faculty and Teaching Mrs. Tingle would've been cool if the creative teams behind it were more concerned with making quality films instead of marketing deals and pleasing jagoff test screeners who wouldn't know a good movie if it bit em on the ass! I hope this doesn't draw much animosity from Harold, I have a lot of respect for his website and especially Robert Rodriguez. The reason "Teaching" has been delayed for so long is presumably because the first version ended with Holmes killing the bitch teacher or vice versa. Leave it to the Weinsteins to save the day by providing an improbable upbeat ending that doesn't stand the chance of offending anyone. The title change was obviously due to the Columbine tragedy, despite their allegations that they want to sever all connections to the now defunct horror genre. Which leads me to Scream 3...A film that will probably ignite more criticism than the half assed sequel. The original Scream was a fluke. I still think it's a cool movie, but all the pale imitators that tried to cash in on the hype tainted its credibility. It's a damn shame that Idle Hands bombed miserably, everyone was so burnt out by crap "horror" films that they had written it off as another surefire crap fiesta. Anyway, Teaching is going to blow nuts if logic prevails, which will hopefully deflate Kevin Williamsons bloated ego.

    Election? Williamson? and Holmes ...

    by daphmax

Whoa you guys, where are you coming from with all this "Election" is brilliant crap? Yes, its funny at times, and yes, it goes deep in for the realism, but a thousand opportunities were missed with that film that could have made it truly funny. Its overrated. Personally I think it falls short - and seeing how I used to be a Flick-ish type I think I have a good handle on that side of high school. Witherspoon did naught but overplay the role and talk/walk funny. It made no sense whatsoever because she was acting as if she were in a full-force farce, but Broderick and the the director (whose name I forget right now) were going for a subtler ironic realism approach - ergo style clash that totally distracts. Plus the ending sucked. But Zero Cool is right about "That 70's Show". Fox ought to promote them more, they deserve it.

As for Williamson, I think his biggest problem is Miramax. The original Scream was funny and entertaining, but part of the charm was that a lot of people felt like they "discovered" it all by themeselves. The marketing campaign wasn't very aggressive and the original reviews were ok, but it was really a word-of-mouth thing in the beginning. The problem with the sequel had just as much to do with the marketing as it did with the imitators. They gave away waaaay too much plot and jokes witht he trailer and commercials, so by the time people did see the actual film, all the marrow had been sucked out.

Katie Holmes is an attractive girl and a decent actress, but she really has yet to prove herself in a film. "GO" was good, but she played another side of Joey, and this film doesn't seem like too much of a departure either.

I think the title change indicates idiocy as well. And yeah, the rumor about the original draft with the death is true. But there was also an issue with the teen crap author Lois Duncan (whose affiliated to Williamson because "I Know What You Did Last Summer" was based on one of her books). She has a book called "Killing Mr. Griffith" that was made into a tv movie about a year and a half ago starring (I believe) Hilary Swank ("The Next Karate Kid") and it's content is pretty damn similar. I think she may have even gotten a credit. Which is odd because Williamson wrote the original draft and sold it before Scream.

Ok, end rant ... sorry I got carried away,

    Ticklin' Mrs. Tingle

    by guld korn

I can't stand Kevin Williamson! Horror movies used to be fun until they were made into pop culture-ridden pieces of bullshit. Moreso I hate stories like this and rarely is there any life in them. I have yet to see "Election" and I must say that I do want to end up watching it because I have heard it's actually an intelligent satire. God damn, I hate Kevin Williamson! His stupid main character can go to a community college for all I care!

  • Teaching Mrs. Tingle sounds like a great movie and I plan to see it the first day it comes out on August 20. I can't believe people would say that Kevin Williamson is not a good screen-writer/director. He has the money and fans to prove it. I'm sure to love this movie. After all Kevin Williamson writes and directs, Katie Holmes(the most admirable actress in my eyes), Barry Watson(very hot), and cameos by Molly Ringwald. I'm going to love this movie 100%!!! I love the plot, actors, ect, ect, ect. I've always imagined of trying to kill my teacher when she bored the heck out of me or ticked off my living soul. So, know I could I don't actually have to do it. j/k. Not that I would. My teachers scare the hell out of me. But anyways about the film I plan to see it and love it. And have always love Kevin Williamson's and Katie Holmes work in the past.
