The Atomic Boot (An American Soldier In Korea) Takes On IRON MAN!!

Published at:  Apr 17, 2008 9:06:43 AM CDT

Merrick here...

The Atomic Boot sent in the following review of IRON MAN, which screened at the theaters on his base in Korea.

There are some moderate spoilers below, so proceed with caution if you want to remain 100% pure.

REALLY cool that Favreau and Downey showed up at the screening discussed here.

Here's The Atomic Boot...

I am a soldier stationed in Korea and found out this afternoon that there would be a special screening of Iron Man at the base theater...for one night only!!

Being the huge movie and comic geek that I am (and realizing we would be seeing it weeks early) I knew I had to check this out. This by itself would be enough to make most geeks envious, but as If this weren't great enough, not only did we find out that we would be the first group to see this finished film in the world, Jon Favreau and Robert Downey, Jr. showed up as well !!

These two are class acts all the way.

But enough ass kissing...on to the details.

***Spoilers ahead, so be warned***

This movie kicks ass. Hard.

The film starts with the footage we've all seen in the trailers of Stark bullshitting with some soldiers ("This better not wind up on Myspace...") and the following capture by the hands of terrorists; Stark waking up and realizing he is bound, scared to death and surrounded by hooded men making a video.

Cue Title Card.

Flashback to a the events leading up to that day, including Stark scoring a Vanity Fair reporter and the pitch to the military leaders for the Stark Enterprise Jericho missile. As Stark leaves the event the convoy is attacked and this catches us up to the present.

As we all know, Stark escapes (in total terrorist ass kicking mode) by creating the suit and is rescued as he wanders the desert aimlessly, afterwards. Our hero returns to the states a changed man, and tries to change the direction of his company. He is met with total and underhanded resistance by an awesomely bald and bearded The Dude, as Obediah Stone.

Tony takes Stone's advice of laying low and taking some time off, but not quite how Stone thought he might. Stark throws himself into developing a new suit, and the following sequences are incredibly CGI'ed, and even more comical and just as well done (if not better) than Spidey learning how his powers worked.

The build up to the final battle with Iron Man vs an iron Jeff Bridges comes almost too quick, but not before we see Stark square off against more terrorists and fighter jets (a great phone conversation between Stark and Terence Howard make this scene even more memorable). The press conference at the end brought huge laughs and I couldn't think of a better and more appropriate ending (or better way to hint SEQUEL)

The long story a little shorter?

Robert Downey, Jr IS Tony Stark.

Favreau completely and totally owned this one...and the Marvel legacy continues to grow.

Inside comic geek jokes running all throughout the film.

Gwyneth as Pepper Potts was actually not bad at all...her acting was spot on and I totally believed in her and Stark's chemistry/sexual tension.

Every comic geek had a huge smile after Terence Howard looked at the extra suit and nailed his delivery.

No Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury, but SHIELD is there (with a great running joke about it's name)

This is a great summer film and if it is not huge initially (I am sure it will be) with the good word-of-mouth it should get I predict a huge world wide return.

Here are some pics to verify this report...feel free to run the cool Korean scripted version (autographed by Favreau and Downey)of the movie poster if you like.

If you use this call me the Atomic Boot...

It's true, technically the Korean War is still going on.

    by rbatty024

Only a cease-fire was agreed to. It was a stalemate war. It also means that we have to station troops along the border of a country that is perfectly capable of defending themselves, thus wasting millions of tax payer's money, and diverting troops from places where they are more capable of contributing. Well, at least more capable before the current Iraq war. So, if you want to get technical we have three wars going on right now: Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

The poll at SHH has the film making $165 million on opening week

    by charlie murphy

i'm excited for it, but that excitement doesn't turn my brain to mush. I think the movie will be lucky if it breaks 60 million opening. decent review, i guess, it fits with the other reviews coming in... i still don't like that flashback business after the opening credits. "Alias" used to do it all the times and it drove me fucking bananas... i just think it's kind of a lazy device if not done well.

Charlie Murphy - I saw that poll too

    by spencertrilby

it's scary: 4.6% out of 15000+ votes predict it will be between $141 and 150 million opening. Which means that more or less than 700 folks are intelligent enough to use a computer, and still think a lesser-known hero like Shellhead will make POTC3-like opening. The hype is slowly but surely killing the movies... Sad but oh so very true.

but seriously, this forum is starting to go the way of the Yahoo Talkbacks...total trash. I haven't posted anything in yahoo for about 4 years. They finally took that option away. Now you have extremist nut jobs posting on this forum every chance they get. Seriously calling military personnel "Baby Killers" went way out of fashion in the late 70's. The pussies that say that are in love with the anonymity of the Internet. They're tired of getting their asses kicked. So instead of speaking out, they type out their ignorance on forums like this. I'm totally against censorship, but at some point you have to decide weather or not you want to preserve a good thing.

Iron Boot, if you're reading this, thanks for posting the review and glad you liked the film. I'm looking forward to it myself though the similarities between this and Batman Begins make me wonder. Still, I'm hopeful for this franchise.

What I can say I definitely can do without is yet another run down of American foreign policy that amounts to little less than making the best out of a bad situation. Kim Jung Il's NK is still very much a threat, no matter how inept a regime. We should be aware that it is not only NK but concerns about China's military that are the reason for our presence there. I hope this TB hasn't turned you off though and hope you contribute more in the future.

    BATMAN BEGINS RIP-OFF? WTF!?!!??

    by rightarm4rosario

Usually, I reserve my comments to lamenting the fact that JOURNEYMAN was canceled, due to the fact that I can no longer (in good faith) criticize the hell out of that woefully constructed particle-board of a television show.

HOWEVER, I am bemused by this insistence by several talkbackers to refer to IRON MAN as a BATMAN BEGINS Rip-off.

Let me go down the list of things that are similar.

    (1) Robert Downey Jr. and Christian Bale are both good actors.

    (2) Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark are both wealthy as all hell.

    (3) Morgan Freeman and T. Howard are both black.

NOW: On to the DIFFERENCES HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW:

    (1) Batman's parents were killed by (a) Joe Chill, (b) the Joker, in the Tim Burton version, or (c) some random criminal (Batman Begins). Iron Man's parents were not killed by (a)some criminal mastermind, or (b) any other random thug (If this movie has this origin at any point, I will retract this argument fully).

    (2) Bruce Wayne is a billionaire douche. Tony Stark is a billionaire asshole.

    (3) T. Howard's "Rhodey" character EXISTS in the comic books. Morgan Freeman's weapons-specialist DOES NOT (or did not, before the movie) EXIST in the comic books.

    (4) The Katie Holmes (errr, Maggie Gyllenhall) character (Rachel Dawes?) in BATMAN BEGINS was Bruce Wayne's Childhood friend, and a character invented for the movie. The Gwyneth Paltrow character Pepper Potts in IRON MAN was not, to my knowledge, a childhood friend of Tony Stark, and WAS A PRE-EXISTING character in the comic books.

    (5) The Katie Holmes character in BATMAN BEGINS was woefully unnecessary and woefully miscast. Katie Holmes is a horrible actress whose only contribution to mankind was grinding "Dawson" on the "Creek" long, long ago. While Gwyneth Paltrow is one of my least favorite actors, she CAN act at higher than a grade school, school-play level.

    (6) The BATMAN BEGINS trailers were kickass, in that you almost couldn't detect (at first) that they were for a Batman movie.
The IRON MAN trailers are kickass (for comic fans, at least) in that you know pretty quickly that they are for an IRON MAN movie.

    (7) Batman plays the role of a billionaire playboy, in order to throw people off the scent that he is a psychotic nutjob. Iron Man is a billionaire playboy who happens to like the ladies.

    (9) BATMAN BEGINS (and its sequel) had to invent many items to turn into toys for toy stores. IRON MAN (and his enemies, etc) IS a toy for toy stores.

    (10) Batman has a cape and a utility belt. And a Batmobile (which, I admit, is cool!). (br) Iron Man has NO CAPE, a suit which is the equivalent of an F-16, and NO IRON-MOBILE (let's hope!).

    (11) Most of us HAVE seen BATMAN BEGINS. MOST of us HAVE NOT seen IRON MAN.

    (12) BATMAN BEGINS was over-rated (like KG and the Celtics) IRON MAN has a bandwagon building, but might still be worth much of the HYPE! (like the Lakers!).

    And finally :

    (13) The BATMAN BEGINS talkbacks did not have a flame-war surrounding some douchebag who names himself after the blood of D. Glover's penis.
The IRON MAN talkback DID have a ... Oh shit, never mind ...

"(3) T. Howard's "Rhodey" character EXISTS in the comic books.
Morgan Freeman's weapons-specialist DOES NOT (or did not, before the movie) EXIST in the comic books." -I beg to differ my friend! You better check yourself fool. Fox has been a character in the Comics, animated TV show before Begins.

"(12) BATMAN BEGINS was over-rated (like KG and the Celtics)
IRON MAN has a bandwagon building, but might still be worth much of the HYPE! (like the Lakers!)." - Its not everyday that you get an All-Star player for a Happy Meal. BUt the Celtics are still gonna spank the Lakers come Finals time. And I am a Magic Man.

Batman's sidekick is a sissyboy ringling brother, forced by Batman/Bruce Wayne to shave his legs.

IRON MAN's sidekick is a badass military-man/bodyguard who could kick the shit out of Tony Stark.

IRON MAN : DIRECTOR OF SHIELD

    by laserpants

Is a really great comic. Its one of Marvel's best now. Also, pick up the Extremis trade paperback. Its a reboot, seems to have some influence on this (at least in terms of the origin redux -- moving from Viet Nam to Afghanistan for instance), and its a really kick ass story with some amazing artwork care of Granov (who designed the suit for the movie, i believe, as well).

I know that the Animated Series was awesome, but are we talking Paul Dini / Bruce Timm "classic" Batman animated series, or some recent drek?
Either way, I don't count it as repping the comics. I'm not hating on BATMAN BEGINS, but Lucious Fox isn't like Alfred, or, say, Rhodey. And I'm still not clear on when (or if) Fox appeared in the comic books.

I'm not going to completely go fanboy-supernova and say that it really matters, but Rhodey is a damn real part of the IRON MAN mythology. Hell, even Pepper Potts has been around for 20 years, at least. If FOX has appeared in the comics, its a relatively new development.

wikipedia tells me I was WRONG

    by rightarm4rosario

    From wikipedia:

"Lucius Fox is a fictional character appearing in Batman comic books by DC Comics. He was created by Len Wein and John Calnan, and first appeared in Batman #307 (January 1979). As a supporting character, he acts as Bruce Wayne's business manager who apparently unknowingly runs the business interests that supplies Batman's equipment needs as well as financing his operations."

    My bad.

One more thing about the idiot above trying to start a flame war about Glover's penis, or something ...
Aren't there more important things like, say, where the HELL is the Rosario Dawson cameo in IRON MAN. Why wasn't SHE Rachel Dawes, or Pepper Potts, or IRON MONGER, for that matter??!??

I can see what youre saying there. I dont even know why there is even a link to the 2 characters. Its two seperate entities altogether. Just because they are rich doesnt mean its EXACTLY the same story.

Still looking forward to the movie. But the Dark Knight is where my heart is at the moment. Dont care about the $$$ it makes.

As a matter of fact I do have you figured out you cream filled bung hole. You're a dripping fucking pussy of epic proportions that loves to stick his head up his ass so he can sniff the jizz he had for breakfast. You can take your anti-war bullshit and stick it where you like your bf to live you puss filled cunt. You're not anti-war but you are pro-stupid. You open that cum dumpster you try to call a mouth up and out spills the dumbest bullshit I've heard in quite a while. I'll tell you what you shit filled cockroach, when you decide to quit taking welfare and get out of your parents basement then you can talk goat fucker. Until then I'd shut your rancid mouth and quit acting like the goddamn used tampon you are.

Man what in the fuck is wrong with you? First of all, all you had to do was read Atomic's review and intro and know he's just like everyone here, except well-spoken and cool. Then your rant on Xiphos - dude you are so offbase. This is a guy who was wounded in Afghanistan. And whether you support his being there or not, don't put him in the same league as the fucking chickenhawks who sent him there. You need to widen your horizons a little about who're in the military before bashing them all. They're your fellow citizens, try not to forget that.

Great movies are being screened for a bunch of uneducated killers. Just look at the kind of people whom join the US military, poor and uneducated. Disgusting pathetic people, ppl who get their jollies killing innocents in Iraq.

Let me just say that North Korea is a threat. They have kidnapped South Koreans for many years. They still have shots fired at the DMZ every once in a while.

But that is not the only reason why we are still there. It's a great position to have in the west.

Oh...and anyone that talks about women that they don't know and uses the word "twats" should really have his balls ripped off in a freak accident so he will spawn no more.

You can criticize the foreign policy of the US all you want

    by zacdilone

But to make the sweeping statements that everyone in the military is "white trash" and a "baby killer" proves that while our leaders may be stupid, you are worse than stupid, because you can't tell the difference between the people who declare war and the people who fight it. Many good men and women join the military out of a sense of service to our country. Many in the military oppose the current war in Iraq (I know, I know...many support it as well). The same blindness that affects our leaders and keeps them from seeing the real enemies in our world affects you, dg_db. Where their blindness leads to bad policy, yours leads to bigotry against those who don't deserve it. As far as I'm concerned, you're no better than them.

    by bringingsexyback

But other than Danny Dickblood, I think the others chiming in the same sentiment are just trolling. America needs a military presence in South Korea and Japan not only to protect our interests in the region, but to counter-balance Russia and China. War hasn't broken out in the region because we *are* there.

Love it even more. Expect the backlash to kick in in 5,4,3,2.....Its a great addition to the comic book movie genre. Its funny, exciting...good performances. Paltrow is a little weak but in the way her character is written. Bridges is good, howard is good but downey is was makes it. HE is 80% responsible for the films awesomeness. I think a lot of you will enjoy the shit out of it.

Granted, RDJ is the only valuable thing in it

    by spencertrilby

but his dialogues may be, in my humble opinion, even weaker than Paltrow's lines.
Val Kilmer is a great actor too (their chemistry in KKBB was absolutely great) but just because he was cast as Bruce Wayne didn't redeemed the whole Batman Forever fiasco. Just a thought.
