A New KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL Image!! + More INDY Films??

Published at:  Apr 17, 2008 8:47:50 AM CDT

Merrick here...

USA Today features a new interview with Harrison Ford discussing many things.

Notably: he doesn't rule out a fifth INDIANA JONES film, which should effectively dispel recently advanced rumors that Indy dies in KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL (although conspiracy theorists would say this is merely an elaborate ruse to distract fans away from the fact that he does die in the movie).

Tickle Shia to read more!

I distinctly remember him (with an eyepatch even?) retelling at least one of his "Young Indiana Jones" tales in the TV show. So there would definately be a continuity fuck-up if he died. Unless that old man was just a dirty old man looking for children to sit on his lap and share his 'adventures' with him.

    by alliejamison

Funny bit from the EW article: ''I was not prepared for not being able to have a script during prep.'' When he finally got one to keep, every page had been bar-coded and watermarked to discourage easy duplication. He says he was also given a hotline number. If he needed to valet-park his car — and was even thinking of leaving the script in the backseat — all he had to do was dial the hotline and someone would come retrieve it.

    Eye patch

    by i am rocko

Yep, in the The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles George Hall (aged 90 plus!) played the old Indy, he sometimes "introduced" the odd episode, like he was telling the story as a verbal tale. I think Harrison himself even did one? I also seem to remember that the old Indy wore an eye patch?! Maybe they will show how that happens in this film. However, one thing, I think the old Indy intros have been removed from George Lucas himself in the DVD releases of Young Indy. Someone please confirm if they knowm, and let's face it George has been known to fuck with his continunity before, so having the old Indy in the TV shows probably means shit to him and he could well kill him off, because Luca$ is just a fucker like that...

    by alliejamison

I really hope they won't do any more of these. Of course I know that this is merely an illusion. I wanted this film to happen because I foolishly wished to experience the making and release of an Indy flick. If this is turning out to be really really good they better leave it at that (yeah, one can dream). If it turns out to be a mediocre movie at best I hope they'll never return to this franchise again (yeah, one can dream). But isn't it the most likely thing anyway that we'll get a Mutt & Friends from Greaserland spin-off? Ugh, I really don't want to think about that stuff now. It's only about 33 more days. Time to think about where I'll sit in the theater.

So why do we pick on the young actors. I think he's alright. He doesn't make or break a film for me.

Rumours that a character will die in an upcoming movie don't need spoilers. Come on... If they had somehow revealed that Molaram would make an appearance, then ok, I'd be pissed. But it's an american blockbuster film in which the titular hero is way past his prime. They've introduced this son character. it never even crossed your mind that they might be killing him off?

    The problem with The Beef...

    by christopher3

Is that he's just another one of these safe, inoffensive, nondescript whitebread casting choices that regularly gets shit out from the Disney Channel kid-actor factory. He's perfectly competent for the roles he gets, but he has absolutely no edge. It's no wonder Spielberg likes the kid: he fits in perfectly with Spielberg's general tendency since the '80s to suburbanize American cinema and tame sources as distinctive and diverse as Kubrick and Philip K. Dick into 2 hour theme park rides. But hey, that's what the Indiana Jones flicks are all about, so the Beef's perfectly cast here.

Even though the article isn't about the title, but you can't miss a chance to share your wit with the world. Secondly, scour your imagination for something suitably humerous. In the case of Cygnus this shouldn't take long. Right, now having plucked "Harrison ford is old" out of the ether think up some devastating like to old age that will fit onto your stem, such as "Casino Junket". Because that's what old people do. Add them together and voila- one slice of deep fried comedy dogshit: "Indiana Jones and the Casino Junket" Not at all funny/ clever, and the world will become a slightly smarter place when you stop doing it.

    About Shia:

    by tron8278

I think people are just jealous(sp). He was in Transformers, arguably the best film of last year, and now Indiana Jones, the soon to be best film of this year! (Aside from The Dark Knight.) He just happened to be in the right place at the right time when Spielberg noticed him. I think he'll be around for a long time. He'll be the new Kevin Bacon, or Edward Norton in the future.

I personally don't hate shia or anything, but we are talking about him following in the footsteps of Harrison Ford in one of the most iconic roles in cinematic history. I seriously doubt Indy will die (Sean Connery didn't and he was a shoe in for the old death scene), and I also doubt Lucas or Spielberg would continue the series. Then again, maybe I'm just being an optimist.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
    300
    Aqua Teen Hunger Force
    Grindhouse
Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer: (Scratch your head on that one!)
    AVP: Requium

I don't give a crap what people think about what I like, and don't like. I HATED No Country for Old Men. There. I said it. I don't usually go to the movies based on what the critics say. They may have removed him from the DVDs because the character's family dynamic changes. In the show, he was living in the 'burbs and his children were dull and unadventurous. If Mutt is Indy's son in this film, it wouldn't fit the portrayal of his descendents in the show.

I was talking with this hillbilly at work and mentioned the film and he asked: "Why would they make another Indiana Jones movie" to which I rubbed my finger's together to indicate cash-scratch and said: "Costs a lot of money for Harrison Ford to fly around in that chopper saving lives for real." That's all I can figure, Speilberg/Lucas sure ain't doing it to prove anything and I find it hard to believe at this point it's even fun at all for them to make yet-another movie, must be their little sandbox and they feel like playing. It kind of pains me to see it, Harrison could have pulled this off 10 years ago, now he just looks old, too old to punching and kicking and swinging from whips.

Go there. Every time you post I am just dumbfounded with your complete lack of intelligence and whiny childish pleas for SOMEBODY, ANYBODY to think that some summer movie is the best of any film to come out that year. The movies you like and have listed have awful scripts, stupid plots filled with plot holes and unexplained nonsense, terrible acting, characters which call for no sympathy from the audience at all, characters which are stereotypical and offensive, and generally movies which have forsaken the criteria of an intelligent thoughtful film in favor of big stunts and crowd pleasing stupidity. There are movies that can both entertain to an enormous degree and still contain some amount of depth. You listed none of those, and are a moron.

As I recall it, Indy and his Native American sidekick are driving away from some baddies out in the Yukon or some such place. They elude the villains and take cover in a cabin where Indy finds an old saxophone. He then tells the sidekick about how he used to play sax in college, leading into the meat of the episode. At the end, the baddies bust into the cabin and Indy blows a note on the sax, causing a bunch of snow to fall on his pursuers, improbably knocking them unconscious.

    by skimn

30's to early 40's when he played Han Solo, then Indiana Jones. The studios would never introduce a "hero" character with the possibility of sequels at that age today. And no, James Bond doesn't count because he's an exsisting character.

    Mola Ram!!!

    by mattyboy122

He has the single biggest "what the fuck?" moment of the series for me. Know that part when Indy comes back to being a good guy and starts kicking ass to save Willie? Then he sees Mola Ram, rushes over to him, then we cut to a wider shot and Mola Ram is suddenly laying on the ground (and appears to be a mannequin or something) while some random trap door thing opens and Mola Ram laughs maniacally as he slips away. I mean, what the fuck was that? Anyway, people don't like Shia because he always plays the pipsqueak sidekick. He isn't someone like Gosling or Levitt who can carry a film. More Indy? With Shia? I don't even think I'm going to see this one, so I definitely wouldn't see any of the other sessions of flogging this dead horse.

As if it wasn't already insult enough to believe the physics at play woulda knocked a fuckin croc unconscious, we don't even get to see Mola Ram get eaten all Quint style?! by drath

Are you just fishing for certain comments in talkback or what? Who cares at this point, wait until we've seen the movie before we assume there's any magic left to make another one. Everything I've read about this has left me with the impression that none of the big three involved were very happy while making most of the last three Indy films and they had to really reach a "now a or never" point to make another one. It's a gift that they choice now instead of never, but I think really talking about more movies at this early date is just being greedy. Also, Indy dying rumors are so played out. Guys, you don't kill the hero in his own series. It's pretty obvious that Shia's role is closer to Short Round than Indy 2.0. Even if he is the long lost son, I think he'll just be another supporting player of Indy's adventures just as his father was in the last one. ERB gave John Carter a son, but that did not mean the character was a replacement hero. People need to get over that kind of thinking whenever a son character is introduced. I don't think we've EVER seen them do that with the hero of an action series, and I doubt they're doing it now. The Shia hate knows no shame. Frankly, you people should be directing your vitriol on more worthy targets like the ever-hissable media whore Ashton Kutcher.

    by skimn

The 30 second TV spot starts with Shia stating "Professor, I think we've hit a dead end." Or some such statement. And the "I thought you were a teacher" in the original teaser. There is nothing but speculation that indicates Shia is Indy's son? I LIKE that they are keeping a lot under wraps, unlike Iron Man.

I call BULLSHIT on new Shia movies and here's why...

    by big dumb ape

You know, here's the main problem I have with doing any further Indy movies that would now center on and star Shia taking over center stage, and it's a pretty obvious reason. And no, it's not that I simply don't like the guy. To be honest, I basically find Shia "meh." Nothing horribly bad, but nothing astoundingly great either. So it's actually an even more simple reason than that...If THAT was Speilberg and Lucas' intention all along, namely to reinvent the franchise and relaunch it as yet another cash cow that they could tap into for the next decade or so, then why the fuck didn't you just RECAST Indy...ala Bond...and do a trilogy of all-new 1940's adventures that stayed true to the spirit of the "character" and to cliffhanger serials and fighting Nazis and finding ancient mystical relics and all that good stuff?Yes, yes -- I know. There are those that say ONLY Harrison Ford can play Indy...and I would agree that so far in the stills Ford has looked pretty good, so its good to see him back...but if he's going to be back, then KEEP HIM BACK. But don't freakin' kill him and turn things over to Shia and think you can get away with the utterly bullshit cliched idea "Oh, he's the son, so he can continue the tradition and moviegoers won't notice." Because here's a news flash to Speilberg and Lucas: WE'RE GOING TO FUCKING NOTICE AND NOT CARE.So seriously, if he plan all along was to do MORE movies but WITHOUT Ford in them, then they really should have just rebooted this thing...cast Hugh Jackman, Nathan Fillion, Josh Duhamel or insert your choice here...and been done with it. At least THAT would have been a bolder idea to try and bring the actual CHARACTER back.

It's unlikely that George Lucas would let Indy die in the fourth film, if for no other reason than the fact he includes a much older Indy as a sometime character/narrator in the Indiana Jones Chronicles. SpawnofAchilles and Big Dumb Ape called it...

    by spud mcspud

SpawnofAchilles - Perfectly put, you just nailed the EXACT reasons why I hate seeing Shia on-screen. I hated him in CONSTANTINE not because he was as far from the comics version of Chas as could be, but because he's got that constantly talking to himself, wisecracking-'cos-he-thinks-he's-cool-but-really-isn't shtick going on, and it bugs the fuck out of me. He's going to kill the Y: THE LAST MAN franchise now nefore it starts, and THAT will suck because Yorick Brown is a calmer version of Brody from MALLRATS with a dash more intelligence in the graphic novel, whereas Shia is a wiseass, desperate-to-be-loved ceaselessly yacking bag of wind that desperately needs to be kept from harming any further beloved movie properties. Geroge Lucas has, since about 1997, a proud history of being so fucking thickskinned that the entire planet can hate his sequels and he can literally shake all that hate off and ignore it - that's him, curse his gizzard neck. But not content with ramming STAR WARS up the arse with his hideous politcally correct revisionist film-making/neutering, he's doing it to INDIANA JONES too. These movies worked years ago because they were made by young guys, with fewer reservations, who weren't afraid of a little violence or casual cliched racist stereotyping or less-than-noble character traits in their heroes. But here they are, now, making sequels with no violence, perfectly PC views on other races etc, swapping walkie-talkies for guns and pretending there were no exploding heads in RAIDERS (name one cool gory scene in a newer Indy movie than that which stuck with you in the same way! Not that lame ending to CRUSADE, that's for sure) and swapping stormtroopers (who were people, and killing people is BAAAAAAAD) for battle droids (who are only machines, and killing machines is OKAAAAAAAY) in their quest to make once-great franchis4es into bitch-whipped, neutered, metrosexual 21st century piss-kicked-out-of-them pussy-whipped versions of the shadows of what they once were.

Big Dump Ape - You could not be more right, so to Spielberg and Lucas - WE WILL FUCKING NOTICE AND WE WILL NO LONGER CARE! The only recast that works for me is Nathan Fillion - for Indiana Jones or Han Solo, he's the only actor with anything close to the laconic charisma of Harrison Ford in these movies. Why the hell did so many of us love the character of Mal Reynolds so much in FIREFLY and SERENITY? Because he was doing EXACTLY what we'd hoped to see a young Solo (or equivalent roguish character) doing in the SW prequels. Fuck you Lucas, for doing that to us, and God bless you Whedon, for giving us damn close to the next best thing. Give Whedon the STAR WARS TV show, and maybe the franchise can yet be fucking saved. Spielberg - if you put the Indy future in Shia's hands, watch a good 98% of we core fans and film geeks walk the fuck away. I don't care how funny he is when he comes over for dinner, INDIAN JONES will finally go direct-to-DVD if this fuck becomes the central character. Don't do a George Lucas on this - listen to the fans. The future of Indy rests on this.

I'd like to meet more than her eyes... meaning her tight hot pussy, me ramming it from behind, her screaming my pain in pleaseurepain, begging for more... OH YEAH!! THERE IT GOES!!! BOOYAAA!!! Last Crusade refers

    by mrbigstuffx

more to the last crusade in pursuit of the holy grail than it does Indy's last adventure - so the first movies arent really a trilogy (i know there are three movies), but they are only linked through the main character and no master narrative

    Shia/pussy

    by stevie grant

true, Shia may get more pussy than any talkbacker here... but the matter at stake is: why does Shia/pussy seem so ambivalent in meaning. The kid (and I mean "kid" even though I got to be the same age, plus or minus a year or two) seems like an ineffective, reactive not assertive, somewhat whiny somewhat slow, actor. There are so, so many other young male actors who are so much better than LaBeef... that his existence appears to be proof positive that it's connections, not talent, that matters in Hollywood (hopefully, just by and large).

    trilogy is rarely used properly

    by bouncy x

it's gotten to the point that they call it a trilogy anytime a movie series reaches 3 parts. if simply having 3 parts made something a trilogy, then we'd have a shitload of them. but the truth is trilogy is one story seperated into 3 parts, beginning, middle and end. and in that proper context, there arent that many. the only ones that come to mind quickly are Back to the Future, Godfather, Star Wars (when 3 is all there was) Scream and more recently we have LOTR, Matrix and the Pirate movies. granted those last two only spawed 2 extra parts due to the success of the first but its still a trilogy since they told an ongoing story that ended. well until they find an excuse to make more but til then. Indy isnt a trilogy at all, its just 3 seperate stories featuring the same character, they're sequels in the truest sense of the word. but as i said they call anything with 3 parts a trilogy these days so the word has sorta lost meaning. and then you have Alien, they went and created a word for 4 movies with Quadrilogy. but if you wanna be nitpicky, Friday the 13th beat them to the bunch since the first 4 movies are essently one long story. anyway i was bored so i wrote...hoora.

..was excised from the canon because he mentioned having a daughter and he has one eye. I personally liked the Old Indy bits, and I kinda rather would have seen him have a kick ass daughter...but yeah in the show I think she was mentioned as being a dud.

Thoughts on Shia hate and Lucas hate in general.

    by sithtastic

I tend to be one to think all that money hasn't so much made Lucas thick skinned as it has made him simply neglectful of what others wanted (namely us). Even were Indy 4 to tank, no message would be received at Skywalker Ranch. You and I are going to line up, same as we always do.

As for the Shia hate, I don't see the point. He has potential if he's allowed to grow beyond just simply a wiseass (or perhaps to stop taking wiseass roles). The question is will he do it?

I'll catch it at a matinee...

    by br1947

I never thought I'd be more excited about a Robert Down Jr. movie over a new Indiana Jones flick, but here I am. As a child of the 80's, Indy fucking rules. I was really, really, REALLY looking forward to this until the first trailer. After the pause for 5 seconds to say something smart-ass, grin, then punch the bad guys... that's not Indy. Indy is watching some dude twirling blades like a buzzsaw about to let loose, then calmly pulling his revolver, shoting him once and walking off without a word. I hope I'm 100% totally wrong, that this is the greatest thing ever, but at this point I have 0 faith in it.

In this month's Maxim, Harrison Ford said he would do another Indy film "in a New York minute..." which says fairly clearly that he's not dead at the end.

    True Trilogies

    by hopewell1

Back to the Future and Pirates of the Caribbean were not written with trilogies in mind. They went back and attached stories once the films were successful. There are even fewer intended trilogies then. Lord of the Rings is one but even then Peter Jackson pitched it to New Line as two films so really it's hard to say that the only true trilogy is a three part story when it comes to Hollywood.

Old Indy in Young Indiana Jones

    by obidawsn

As much as I enjoy watching the Young Indiana Jones DVDs, I do miss the old man bookends. But watching the first volume, it seems that they really just mashed two episodes together to make a feature length movie (this is especially noticeable in the first few "movies"). That way they have several feature length movies instead of a bunch of hour shows. Maybe that's how it was before and they showed them in parts (I don't remember), but if they did mash episodes together, then that would be a reason to cut the bookends. They also have the episodes in chronological order rather than the order they were shown. It's possible the bookends wouldn't make sense in chronological order. I don't now, but I wish they would, at least, put them in as extras, though.

So they went ahead and took out Old Indy?

    by rbatty024

That's a shame. I've been wondering if this is the film where Indy loses his eye. Granted the eyepatch was the only cool thing about Old Indy.

The weird thing about Old Indy was that he would be doing normal shit an old man would do, like buying Depends at the grocery store, and then he'd start rambling on about one of his adventures. All of a sudden by the end of the episode a whole crowd was formed around him. I remember thinking at the time, "THAT's THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT WOULD HAPPEN!" If an old man starts telling me a story I run for the goddamn hills.

    Star Wars original trilogy...

    by darth macchio

Of course that's what Lucas says but my guess is back in the seventies when Star Wars was called "Star Wars" and not "Episode 4" my theory is that it was never meant to be a trilogy much less even have a sequel. 2 things specifically come to mind both pro and con...the sister kissing scene and Vader surviving the DS explosion. The kiss leads me to think that it was never meant to be a trilogy because to think that Lucas would have any character mistakenly fall for his own sister and then make out with her and then only later find out it's his sister and not bug out that he made out with her...I just don't buy it...Luke wasn't Leia's brother until Lucas painted himself in a corner with the line "No, there is another". Even in ESB they again kiss like lovers (or potential lovers anyway) and not siblings not once but twice and the last time right at the very end! Now the opposite argument could be made with Vader surviving in SW. No real mention of the Emperor other than in passing and the other main baddy, arguably more central to the antagonist plot, was Tarkin who of course was killed. Vader to me is like Riddick...Twohy, like Lucas, didn't realize how diverse a character he had created until the fans went nuts for them...which is why both of those characters were focused on greater in the sequels (Riddick originally dies in the Pitch Black SP until test screenings convinced Twohy not to kill him!). Vader surviving, on its own, to me does not mean a whole series of sequels/prequels were planned from day one. Or even that Lucas thought he could get a sequel greenlit prior to seeing the impact that SW was eventually to have. I think in those days, with so many studios turning Lucas down and all the chaos and limitations in the entire process of making the movie that Star Wars is a miracle of filmmaking...an almost pitch-perfect combination of chaotic elements coming together in a historical film. Lucas, a mediocre if not horrible director, somehow managing to direct competently...the actors most of which were complete unknowns (cept for Guinness who notoriously did not appreciate the role nor the fame garnered from it) turning in great/excellent to at least good/non-distracting performances. The music which is legendary. The scope and tone which are simply beautiful. But now there's this concept that the whole thing was planned from start to finish...that Lucas had the whole story in his head and was just waiting for the right circumstances to make his epic dream a reality. I don't buy it. Tho I can never prove it....to me, Lucas was flying by the seat of his pants and fly he did! I don't know why he pulled back a bit for Empire but it allowed one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made to proceed...but by Jedi we've got Lucas in full-on "I'm a fucking genius!!!" mode, not listening to anybody...probably shadow directing half the movie...so you get ewoks (originally supposed to be Wookies) and god damn Chewbacca doing a fucking tarzan yodel. I think Vader surviving in SW wasn't even meant for future sequels...I think he did it in a "your imagination goes from here" style. Obviously, I could be wrong...but then explain how pc-obsessed Lucas, having planned this entire thing from the start, would actually have 2 of his main characters engaging in light incest without ever addressing the issue again. Not buyin' it! LoTR a trilogy? Of course...it was originally published as one book *then* separated into 3. SW originally a trilogy? Just like the Matrix...only a trilogy *after* the fact. Not buyin any of it!
