THE REAL WORLD 20, With The Kids Living In CBS' Old Hollywood Headquarters, Launches On MTV Tonight!!

Published at:  Apr 16, 2008 8:11:54 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

A few notes on the 20th edition of “The Real World,” which launches on MTV tonight:

* Just as “Real World 10” was the second edition based in New York, “Real World 20” is the second edition based in Greater Los Angeles.

* While the second season (with the fat country singer and the pissed-off Irish journalist and the “comedian” who got evicted for trying to see Tami naked) was housed in the beach district of Venice, this time around the cast made its home on the stage on which the “I Love Lucy” TV pilot was shot.

* The “house” is actually located on the site of the former CBS Columbia Square building north of Sunset and Gower, which housed CBS’ national and local TV and radio operations between 1938 and 2007. (These operations – including KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV – were recently relocated to a huge new building here in Studio City – a building erected on the site of CBS’s long-demolished first “Big Brother” house.)

* For the first time since maybe season four (I think), the cast was not forced to work together.

* All cast members are pursuing careers in showbiz.

* For the first time a member of the “Real World” cast was chosen by fans. GREG HALSTEAD, a 20-year-old prankster and aspiring model, garnered nearly three million online votes.

* Greg’s castmates include:

BRIANNA TAYLOR, 20, aspiring singer From Philly. (A former exotic dancer, she was rejected for the fifth season of “American Idol.”)

SARAH RALSTON, 21, aspiring broadcast journalist from Phoenix

DAVE MALINOSKY, 22, aspiring actor from Pennsylvania.

WILL GILBERT, 23, aspiring music producer from Detroit.

KIMBERLY ALEXANDER, 24, aspiring “entertainment show” host from South Carolina.

JOEY KOVAR, 24, aspiring actor From Chicago.

Learn what they all look like here.

Spoilers lurk in the text invisible. Greg and Joey don’t stick around for the full season. They are replaced by two more models, BRITTINI SHERROD and NICK BROWN.

10 p.m. Wednesday. MTV.

I liked the first couple seasons, when they were just living together and no convoluted "Run a company" or other crap was involved. However the novelty wore off about 15 years ago. Yawn.

Does anyone REALLY give a shit?

    by big dumb ape

I remember when THE REAL WORLD first premiered lo those 20 years ago. But I have to say that even back then it seemed like a one-trick pony (to me) that I could never get into afterwards. The reason: as Mr Spork correctly noted above, ever since the first run...where the idea was somewhat novel and new...everyone really HAS just acting FOR the cameras to try and make a name for themselves. That's the problem with reality shows: you can be the loser and still be a giant winner from simply being seen on it, even for just one episode if you made enough of an ass of yourself. And that notion has only become more and more apparent with each passing year, and with each new reality show that has debuted since.Truth be told, if we're going to be stuck with so many of these bullshit reality shows, then just bring on Alec Baldwin's idea of MILF ISLAND (from 30 ROCK) and that sort of thing. For crying out loud, if we're going to be shoveled this shit, than at least go all the way out there to the fringe to create some truly whacked out shows...

I was the biggest fan of that show 'round these parts......but even I bolted after Denver. (And I watched that on mtv.com) I can't support that shithole of a channel just for one show anymore......or it's interwebs counterpart.

    Really?!

    by rutgersjaffo

As someone old enough to have watched (and enjoyed) the first two seasons, I have to ask: Why the hell is this still on? How stupid are people that this same trite formula still amuses them? Gee, I wonder if they still have 1-the drunk? 2-the racist? 3-the asshole? 4-the drama queeen? Am I close? It's like Survivor--after the first season, why in the hell would you want to watch a different group of people do THE EXACT SAME THING?! And here's an idea--if you want to call it 'The Real World', how about you put the occassional fat and ugly person on it? There is NOTHING 'real' about filling a house with a bunch of pretty types who are in it for the free vacation and the chance to make drama on TV and then filming them. This is just one more reason why MTV stopped being relevant about 15 years ago...

    LOL

    by harrysnemesis

Show your age some more guys :) You liked it at one point and now you mock it because others around the age you liked it do... might as well shake your canes at it and yell "Darn that pesky MTV!"

The only thing I agree with is that the name should be changed... the show has NEVER even in its early seasons been about the real world. The fact that they're now bringing on people all aspiring to be entertainers for careers... even less real. But you don't watch the show to see these people get jobs... you watch it for the drama and to see who will hook up. The older shows were better because at least the kids they got were a relatively diverse bunch forced to live together.

I think MTV might have lost its way around the time... oh when it stopped showing actual videos and being about music (The M in their name)

    Gimme Random Casting

    by _maltheus_

I thought the entire cast of this one was suppose to be determined by the viewers, not just one person. That might have been enough to get me to watch again. Average people instead of stuck up, spoiled bitches. The only reason I ever watched this was to get an idea of where kids are heading these days. Once they started going with the worst of the worst and mentally ill, it stopped serving any function for me. In fact the best thing they could do for this show would be to simply choose the cast at random.

I guess I'll finally have to break down and order those Voyager sets tonight - that price is way silly good. Hadn't watched the last three seasons of RW (about the same amount of time I've been gone from Mtv) but decided to randomly check out the premier last night, not bad. Ego guy calling people peasants is enough to get me to watch again. But yeah, the Challange shows are definitely better than the new seasons of RW at this point.

    Proved me wrong...

    by mr. profit

I tuned in out of sheer curiosity because the last Real World I fully watched was Austin. After that I only cared about the challenges. But the first episode proved me wrong. I thought Joey would be a douche and he wasn't. I was wanting him to slug Greg's bitch ass in the face. But I think they eventually will fight. But the kids haven't turned crazy yet. So far an improvement over the last seasons. I'll watch. Real World is the HBIC of reality shows. It loses its way, but sometimes it catches you again.

    JOEY ROCKS!

    by sup3rguy

I have to agree with Mr. Profit on this one. MTV seems to be getting this series back on track. The cast is actually pretty compelling and with each one in Hollywood for a specific reason (it seems this bunch might actually have talent), it seems like there might be more at stake for them! Loved the first episode. And how can anyone NOT love Joey? He's totally gonna beat the crap outta Greg!!! :-)
