The Inexorable Rise Of Kurtzman And Orci Continues!! Are We Ready For ATLANTIS RISING??

Published at:  Apr 16, 2008 8:35:42 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci...you know...the Bayifiers of TRANSFORMERS and JJfiers of STAR TREK...are to produce a live-action adaptation of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's ATLANTIS RISING comic miniseries, which has been optioned by DreamWorks.

In "Atlantis," seismic disturbances at sea force world militaries to investigate the deepest part of the world's ocean, where an underground civilization emerges to wage war with planet Earth.

...says THIS ARTICLE in Hollywood Reporter. Kurtzman and Orci are involved with that as well.

The comics were brought to us by Platinum Studio (website HERE). Platinum recently optioned the rights to another one of its comics, COWBOYS AND ALIENS, to Universal and DreamWorks. Kurtzman and Orci are involved with that one as well.

An unrelated side note: "Atlantis" is also used in the name of one of NASA's remaining space shuttles, a resort in the Bahamas, a SeaWorld ride, a Stephen King book, a Patrick Duffy television series from 1977, an all gay cruise/resort organization, numerous "Search for" documentaries, a STARGATE spinoff, a Disney animated film, and a POS Doug McClure flick from 1978.

And...more.

There's already a film in production about an attacking undersea race. And then there's the Earth V. Moon film, the new Terminator, Avatar and maybe Halo (maybe). Are sci-fi war films a big new trend in the decidedly untrendy Hollywood?

Rickey's assuming the main reason Nelson did so well was due to the fact that the Brewers are a team that's great at slugging fastballs and getting power hits. They were befuddled by a finesse guy like Figeroa.

Lots of money's been thrown at em (new stadium, etc) but in the end, they're just a shitty, shitty team. Is Orci still around? No, so I can badmouth him then? Cool.

In all honestly, I really don't have an issue with Orci. I don't know what he looks like, what his deal is, or anything. All I know is that he writes mildly competant scripts for movies that make boat loads of money. Does it irritate me that I could leave me job and do an equally competant job of writing a script as he does? Not really. But the scripts he churns out certainly don't add to my enjoyment of watching summer blockbuster movies... I'm kind of tired of living in the age of "poor mans" blockbusters. Meh. Good to hear, Boborci

    by rickey henderson

Most importantly, don't pander to the lowest common denominator. I want a movie that challenges and entertains me. Uninteresting movies bit you over the head with morals. The good movies introduce THEMES. And this is why a show like BSG is so popular amongst folks here--it doesn't bludgeon its viewers with modern day morality tales, it's more subtle than that. The issue with "Atlantis Rising" as a script is that it could easily become a parable on environmental issues. Sure, you can keep the themes, but remove the tidy little parables. Let the viewers try to sort things out for themselves for a change. And if they can't keep up, well fuck em. If they can't work their brains to grasp new and interesting ideas then they deserve to be left behind by society. You're a screenwriter Orci, and in principle, an artist. And as such, an artist is supposed to facilitate new ideas and societal change. Do anything less and what's the point of even putting pen to paper? I know that all sounds a bit lofty, but honestly now, lets face the fact that a big reason for America no longer being as powerful, competitive, or credible in the world is due to our overwhelmingly lousy culture. I'm goddamned tired of my country being represented by poorly educated mountain dew swilling 13 year olds. If we stop making crap movies for em, it's best for everyone.

Perhaps Throberto is just grinding out workman like scripts and saving his There Will Be Blood as something yet to surprise us all with.
