The Inexorable Rise Of Kurtzman And Orci Continues!! Are We Ready For ATLANTIS RISING??
Merrick here...
Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci...you know...the Bayifiers of TRANSFORMERS and JJfiers of STAR TREK...are to produce a live-action adaptation of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's ATLANTIS RISING comic miniseries, which has been optioned by DreamWorks.
In "Atlantis," seismic disturbances at sea force world militaries to investigate the deepest part of the world's ocean, where an underground civilization emerges to wage war with planet Earth.
...says THIS ARTICLE in Hollywood Reporter. Kurtzman and Orci are involved with that as well.
The comics were brought to us by Platinum Studio (website HERE). Platinum recently optioned the rights to another one of its comics, COWBOYS AND ALIENS, to Universal and DreamWorks. Kurtzman and Orci are involved with that one as well.
An unrelated side note: "Atlantis" is also used in the name of one of NASA's remaining space shuttles, a resort in the Bahamas, a SeaWorld ride, a Stephen King book, a Patrick Duffy television series from 1977, an all gay cruise/resort organization, numerous "Search for" documentaries, a STARGATE spinoff, a Disney animated film, and a POS Doug McClure flick from 1978.
And...more.

...No wait!
-
Orci probably can only stay in the present timeline.
-
There's already a film in production about an attacking undersea race. And then there's the Earth V. Moon film, the new Terminator, Avatar and maybe Halo (maybe). Are sci-fi war films a big new trend in the decidedly untrendy Hollywood?
-
Is another "Aquafag"-like epic Talkback imminent? Just asking...
-
I'm sure Orci (aka Boborci) will be here to explain everything. Right, Boberto?
-
I'm not getting my Namor movie?
-
Wait... what?
-
Honestly, I am weary of the people. Is it that they have no KFCs? Lets' wipe 'em out.
-
I don't hate THEM just because they have GILLS ... why do they hate US because we use LUNGS ? Jeez. That is all.
-
Is this a hint of something to come?
-
missed out on the walk out onto dry land event. Ever since, they've been really pissed at the rest of us.
-
let's talk about that busted tee's girl.... damn
-
Stargate rules them all. HUZZAH!
-
Rising sounds silly
-
Presumably you posted that final paragraph after a frantic google search to find out what 'Atlantis' is? I can't think of any other reason that you would post that arbritary list of Atlantis references.
-
And will u all please stop cracking on about the Busted Tees girl.We Brits only get to see ads for compasses on our mobiles .... sorry cellphones (oh you colonials and your funny names for things /rolleyes)
-
Now go get your shine box!
-
motherfu...! these guys keep gettin' work!
-
...do a grab of the busted tees girl and post it on photobucket or something so the rest of us can see her? C'mon...
-
...aren't they also fighting themselves since they already live here?
-
This guy is like a freaking plague of locusts or something. Does anyone else hear Agent Smith's assessment of humanity from the Matrix (the good one) every time Orci's name is mentioned?
-
It's about time he had a revival.
-
The more wacked out sci-fi movies the better, if you ask me. Some are bound to be decent if not awesome and the bad ones sometimes turn into great drinking/smoking games. Although I was disappointed by "Transformers" this seems perfect for Bay. BTW my screen name is pulled from King's "Hearts in Atlantis" if anybody cares. Doubtful, I know
-
Zombie Doug McClure vs Atlantis!
Oh yes. -
Inevitably, whomever wins the war, be it humans or fish people, we are all doomed to slavery under the dominion of Apes. And I for one welcome our Ape overlords and offer my assistance in its ascension.
-
LOL - dominion of Apes...
-
I'm surprised it took so long. Now there will be a couple of movies about Atlantis, and some direct-to-DVD copycats to boot. The race is on1
-
Is one of the coolest mythological things ever and the closest Hollywood has gotten to making something like it is the Gungans underwater world. Its too bad Disney made Atlantis before John Lasseter took over, if he was in charge of it it could've been awesome.
-
The monster vocalization sound effect sounds like a guy saying "smagle beagle smaaahg!" through a straw into a bowl of milk. Classic.
-
...was also the ancient civilization in AVP1, FYI. One of the commonly tosses around theories was that Atlantis was fairly far south where the penguins and glaciers now roam.
-
looks soooooooooo good!...
-
fun movie. i have a soft spot for any atlantis related material. try raiders of atlantis, though it has little about atlantis and is more like the first mad max meets the 2nd madmax.

-
...FUCK have I just seen.... it seemed quite sexy till Robin Askwith turned up! The world just got stranger for me
-
There can't really be epic, summer movie explosions underwater. What will Orci do without his explosions?
-
CALLING BOBORCI.
-
Is everyone feeling okay? I can't find any insults...
-
He had a streak of AWESOME movies in the 70's. At the Earth's Core? The Land That Time Forgot (and it's sequel)? All great flicks.
-
DITTO.
-
Come on you know some critic upset that he has to review a movie he deems beneath him, will use that headline.
-
with friggin' LASER BEAMS.
-
Because you give me a throbbing headache. Baha!

Rickey, for one, Welcomes our new Aquatic Overlords!
by rickey henderson
SEA-MEN CONQUERORS! FROM THE DEPTHS!
-
Get your flippers off me you damn dirty SEA-MAN!
-
Bad luck if you're a fan of this Atlantis Rising thing.
-
Haha gotcha!
-
That sounds pretty insulting if you ask me. Good job!
-
Latest Busted Tee chick is in a nice bare ass shot. Niicce...
-
Where you ever attached to the SR sequel?
-
Thanks man. BTW, [fanboy]Transformers was awesome. [/fanboy] ;)
-
So who's directing? And why should anyone think that this movie is anything more than a mash up of The Abyss and ID4?

Secret government experiments at Area 51 anger Atlantians
by darth_inedible
Shia Labeouf, a mild mannered California high school student is pulled into the action when the pocket protector of his long lost father, a former Area 51 scientist, is discovered in a thermal vent at the bottom of the Marianas Trench.
-
No director yet... we must choose...
-
yes, he's good at creating those aquatic disaster scenes, blah blah blah, but he's a hack when it comes to actual directing. Those are just Rickey's two cents. And leave the loveable alien sidekick out of the script, ok? I want to see full on SEA-MEN emerging from THE DEPTHS to CONQUER HUMMANITY.
-
Maybe one of those sea-men can play first base?
-
Mark, Rickey's words, DWright is going to be playing first base in the very near future. That Friday night Figeruoa game was pretty damned good, wasn't it? And how about those treacherous escalators st Shea? Yikes!
-
Me and my friend kept joking that it would be hysterical if the first Met no-hitter came from Nelson. Not close, but 5 2/3 of utter mastery. :-)I wanna know who was dressed up as Mike Pelfrey last night!
-
Rickey's assuming the main reason Nelson did so well was due to the fact that the Brewers are a team that's great at slugging fastballs and getting power hits. They were befuddled by a finesse guy like Figeroa.
Hey boborci, Rickey's curious: what's your baseball franchise of favor? -
But I agree with Beezbo who said the race is on. They may not be about Atlantis, but we are probably going to see a slew of these. It'll be fun to see which one wins and if one reaches the Star Wars or Matrix level of success.
-
just a little FYI that no, you are not a trend setter.
-
Be thankful Pillow doesn't do that too. :-)
-
They are just there...never able to really make it.
-
Lots of money's been thrown at em (new stadium, etc) but in the end, they're just a shitty, shitty team. Is Orci still around? No, so I can badmouth him then? Cool.
In all honestly, I really don't have an issue with Orci. I don't know what he looks like, what his deal is, or anything. All I know is that he writes mildly competant scripts for movies that make boat loads of money. Does it irritate me that I could leave me job and do an equally competant job of writing a script as he does? Not really. But the scripts he churns out certainly don't add to my enjoyment of watching summer blockbuster movies... I'm kind of tired of living in the age of "poor mans" blockbusters. Meh. Give me something new and unique already, will ya Orci? -
Moon feels that if the trend should continue, Orci, Rickey, Xiphos, and the rest will see Moon's shotgun rampage on the 5:30 news.
-
We're trying!
-
Well Rickey apologizes to ya then. Rickey doesn't swing by AICN as much as he used to. Let's see... Rickey's been reading AICN since the Emmerich version of Godzilla hit the theaters and Rickey started commenting here under various monikers about two years after that. What a long strange trip it's been...
-
There's an image that will linger...
-
Most importantly, don't pander to the lowest common denominator. I want a movie that challenges and entertains me. Uninteresting movies bit you over the head with morals. The good movies introduce THEMES. And this is why a show like BSG is so popular amongst folks here--it doesn't bludgeon its viewers with modern day morality tales, it's more subtle than that. The issue with "Atlantis Rising" as a script is that it could easily become a parable on environmental issues. Sure, you can keep the themes, but remove the tidy little parables. Let the viewers try to sort things out for themselves for a change. And if they can't keep up, well fuck em. If they can't work their brains to grasp new and interesting ideas then they deserve to be left behind by society. You're a screenwriter Orci, and in principle, an artist. And as such, an artist is supposed to facilitate new ideas and societal change. Do anything less and what's the point of even putting pen to paper? I know that all sounds a bit lofty, but honestly now, lets face the fact that a big reason for America no longer being as powerful, competitive, or credible in the world is due to our overwhelmingly lousy culture. I'm goddamned tired of my country being represented by poorly educated mountain dew swilling 13 year olds. If we stop making crap movies for em, it's best for everyone.

Elliot and Rossio are left out in the cold, no longer the go-to
by creasybear
for bloated, minimal brain-activity summer blockbusters.
-
Well, insulting only in that every great writer strives for greatness in their work, as Rickey put it, like great artists do. Perhaps Throberto is just grinding out workman like scripts and saving his There Will Be Blood as something yet to surprise us all with. If he can find a way to get Natalie Portman in this Atlantis movie as some naked mermaid, then he'll have earned my respect. HINT!
-
from the FF books, but with no Namor and no FF. And probably some other things too, but that's what comes to mind to this geek. Still, could be interesting. -
Right down to the pointy ears!
-
Sounds like Toho is due some residuals.
-
That busted tees girl looks like she smells like vinegar and egg noodles.
-
Troy McClure....gone. I'm sad.
-
And here I thought I had seen every Doug McClure POS ever made. I stand corrected. I notice John Ratzenberger got a piece of this one himself.
-
It's a wonder he has time to post, or do you think all of his affairs are done now?
-
Are these clowns at Platinum fucking kidding me? Marvel has held the bag on violent Atlantis since this 1930's and Platinum has been pimping itself as a comic-company since inception. With Namor still in development, I'd expect a lawsuit.
