The Peculiar Miracle Of YouTube Shows Us A JOHN CARTER Project That Might Have Been!!

Published at:  Apr 15, 2008 10:28:27 AM CDT

Merrick here...

This isn't exactly "news", but it's an intriguing piece of alternate history Geeks like me tend to get off on...so I thought I'd share it.

You may have heard by now that Pixar is working on an adaptation of Burrough's MARS books (JOHN CARTER OF MARS, PRINCESS OF MARS, WARLORDS OF MARS, etc.)

Some material has recently hit YouTube showing regarding a previous run at the project - from way back in the 1930s.

The project was being advanced by animator-god Bob Clampett, but ultimately fell apart due to differences with the studio.

You can find a few more details about what might've been HERE!

I don't want to see an animated John Carter

    by beezbo

The hell with that. In the right hands, the "Mars" movies could be great. I hope Pixar stays away from this. I don't want another "Beowulf" motion-capture mess either - what is the point of making life-like animated "actors" out of real actors?

Unless it was one of the redmen?

I'm pessimistic about the Pixar version...there's no way John Carter can go thru Disney's halls and not come out fucked up and saccharine.

    Ahhh...John Carter

    by blue_demon

Years ago, I was in Boca Raton, Florida and stopped by the Museum of Cartoon History (if I remember the name correctly) when they were having an exhibit called "Tarzan: From Burroughs to Disney." It was great to see tons of original drawings by some of the great masters of comic book and paperback illustration. I saw two beautiful Mark Schultz drawings and a Frazetta painting of the Golden Lion (surprisingly small). Seeing all those drawings and cells made me wonder why Disney had not tackled John Carter. In the guest book I drew a sketch of Tars Tarkas in a Disney style and wrote, "I would love to see these stories animated."If the Director of "Sky Captain" can't design and direct it, I'm glad Pixar is doing it. I hope they keep it in a retro style.

What does Harry have to say?

    by insightman

Will we ever hear all the details of Harry's involvement with the last aborted attempt to bring this classic series to the screen? Or is he under a gag order? I wish Rodriguez could have done it, but Pixar will do just fine (hope I live long enough to see it, however).

I'm always bitching about how AICN ignores news from Barsoom. I know Harry has an unfortunate history with the property, and either because of some contractual obligation or because he feels it would be inapropriate and biased to report on it, some times I get the feeling there could be big news out there that I wouldn't hear about because I only read AICN.

    Thanks for breaking the ice.

Orson Welles was not going to do Batman!

    by wormie1

The article which this links to refers to an aborted Batman project by Orson Welles. This is not true, it was an "hilarious" wheeze put about by the comic book writer Mark Millar. Anyway, the John Carter footage looked awesome. Am I right in thinking Pixar's movie will be live-action? Let's hope so.

Pixar + John Carter = Everyone Loses

    by scrivener

Just about everything Pixar has done so far I despise, save Ratatouille. Furthermore, John Carter has a very adolescent male bent (almost Conanish) that I just don't think Pixar can or will even try to emulate. I have a feeling that Pixar's take on Mars will be like The Incredibles take on Watchmen. Pfaugh.

I ran this footage at a convention when I was 14 for him.

    by uncapie

At that time, he had the only copy in 16mm. I still remember everything about that day. Bob Clampett was the nicest, most gracious man in the world. I was in awe of this guy and what a shame this animated series never came to fruition.

Has been my dream movies since I was in fourth grade. I never thought I would hear people seriously considering making it; it seemed like a pipe dream. If Harry feels anything like I do about the property, I can sympathize with him about how it must have felt to have the project come apart.
At least with Pixar, it's in good hands. It's not a slam dunk, but I don't think any other studio would have better shot at making a decent movie out of it.

    by zerocorpse

This is what happens when the characters in your animated films are actually animated, rather than being a bunch of still images with motion lines drawn around them.
Old-school western-style ink & paint beats Japanese shortcut animation every time.

A four-armed Thark. Looks big, too, as it should.

But the black & white segment doesn't make sense. The human-sized Martian shouldn't be matching Carter's Earth-born strength like that. Nowhere near.

These days, everything from Hollywood is "loosely based". Unfortunately. For some mysterious reason the decision makers believe that people just aren't interested in seeing a story as it was written by the author. It has to change. And it needs a giant spider. No wait, two giant spiders.

Pixar+John Carter of Mars=evolution of animation

    by pipergates

Perfect project for them to grow adult on...but i do hope they do it grownup style, or at least juvenile...which i guess the source material is anyway. I believe Brad Bird has been talking about the dawning realization of studios that animation can be used in all kinds of films, not only kiddies cartoons.

Now we know what the issue was with the studio...
STUDIO: "yeah so can you show us what youve done in the past year?"
ARTIST: "sure." *hands over a flip book.*
STUDIO: "Uhhhh looks great but uhhh, if this took a year, i mean, *scratch back of neck* uhmm how long do you think a movie will take?"
    ARTIST: "about ten?"
STUDIO: "uhm, we'll uhm we'll call you, ok?"

Would you buy that he can beat anyone in a sword fight, or that he's a warrior from the Civil War, or I don't know, that he's not still the goofy nerd with the face of a pin up? I mean you wouldn't have had Peter Lorre play Dracula. Some actors just don't fit the part. (watch, somewhere there's a movie with Lorre playing Dracula and my point is ruined).

Hugh Jackman would kick some serious Martian Ass. As for Dejah Thoris, I always thought Selma Hayek would be great but she may be getting too old for it.
