Protesters -vs- Police & The WTO!! There's A BATTLE IN SEATTLE Trailer Online!!

Published at:  Apr 10, 2008 9:31:27 AM CDT

Merrick here...

The trailer for BATTLE IN SEATTLE has gone online over at movieset.

While the title sounds like a WWE event, this is actually about the machinations & chaos swirling around 1999's dramatic protest of the World Trade Organization talks in Seattle.

The project stars Martin Henderson, Woody Harrelson, Charlize Theron, Michelle Rodriguez, Ray Liotta, Connie Nielsen, and Channing Tatum. It's written & directed by Stuart Townsend (Lestat in QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, Kolchak in ABC's defunct NIGHT STALKER revival, and Dorian Gray in LXG).

I've always been fascinated by large-scale public protests & regret that it seems increasingly difficult to get mobilize people en masse (Olympic Torch protests not withstanding). People have become too fearful, too complacent, and don't care as much as they used to...I'm wondering if this movie will touch on such notions.

BATTLE IN SEATTLE is already playing film festivals & should hit theaters in September.

HERE'S THE TRAILER!!!

Since half of the ones that do show up have no clue what they are "protesting" about anyway. Most just show up because they want to get loud and scream and be childish in public, and then feel like they did something productive at the end of the day. Yeah, thats a good thing.

    WTO, anarchism, etc.

    by kafka07

It looks like this movie probably aims to be truthful, but of course I'm very cautious. I do myself believe that the police started the violence (which is easy for me to believe because first hand I've seen police instigate violence, ranging from pepper spraying to the breaking of limbs). I'm concerned about how anarchists are portrayed. Maybe there were some violent ones at this protest. But in general the ones I know are strictly non-violent, and are anarchists in the vein of Emma Goldman and Peter Kropotkin. People do need to know (and this is a good age/time for a film like this) about the horrible environmental & human rights record of the WTO and the amount of global control they have. Maybe this film will help make up for what the media deliberately failed to convey, the true meaning of this protest. In 2003 there was another attempt at protest in Miaimi. A shocking documentary (called The Miami Model) about that can be found here: http://video.go ogle.com/videoplay?docid=-4270917811249129823

    Protests and the Media

    by potsmokinalien

The real reason protests don't "work" is because the media stopped covering them. There was a protest in DC against the Iraq War's 4th anniversary last year, half a million people showed up-- NOT A FUCKING PEEP in any of the major news outlets.Protests used to accomplish all sorts of things in the '60s because people all over the country and world were made aware that they were happening. Nowadays, the corporate masters of the news networks (the same military/industrial conglomerates that makes money from the war-- and if you don't believe me-- look it up) have figured out that as long as they don't report the protests, it looks like nobody cares, and they can keep the blood money rolling on in.

    by vadakinx

For the last few years, we've had protests around the world against things like the war in Iraq and the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Millions of people taking to the streets around the world.

The governments always say the same thing: "Oh it's great that we live in countries where people can protest freely".

Which is pure BS. What would be great is if governments listened to those protests. But governments do what they want and ignore the will of the people...so much for democracy.

    by skibum

at the box office, but at least it looks like they are trying to cover all the angles. I was in college in Tacoma at the time, and quite a few of my friends went to downtown Seattle for the protests. From what they said, most of the protesters were peaceful, and the few that were not turned what was supposed to be a non-violent demonstration into a shitstorm. It is unfortunate that many peaceful protesters were caught up in the attempt to quell the rioters.

CHECK OUT THIS FINE QUOTE FROM LE MONDE

    by bringingsexyback

"When the G8 leaders were besieged and publicly upstaged by upwards of 200,000 demonstrators, they had a single line of defence which they repeated to whoever wanted to hear it: “We are democratically elected” - as if this fact had some magic talismanic power. But people are not impressed. Democratic election does not justify presidents when they betray their electoral promises and the public interest, or embark on wholesale privatisation and liberalisation. Nor does it entitle them to move heaven and earth to service the demands of the companies that financed their electoral campaigns. As we know, at least two of the G8 heads - George W Bush and Silvio Berlusconi - represent big business to a far greater extent than they represent ordinary people.

I agree with the posters who were there. Most of the people who had a legit reason to protest were not the troublemakers. It was the anarchists from Eugene who came up just to start shit that caused the major problems. Them and the local high school punks who just wanted to show how much of a bad-ass they were. If neither of them showed up, there wouldn't have been a need for the riot police to start tear-gassing everyone in sight.

    Do protests work?

    by kafka07

That's a vital point people are bringing up. Protests are a very complex animal with a long history. Protests are a result of outrage over something that people believe is unfair. Should people not protest? I think even if protests don't succeed in changing things, they still are a natural phenomena that refects human dignity. If people don't protest something that oppresses them then it would be like them saying to themselves "I have no worth as a human being." Look at the protests supporting Tibet, are they going to get China to leave Tibet? Likely not. But you can't expect people to just be silent. Anti-war protests might seem to be useless too: that massive DC march last year, our media ignored it. But fuck the media. And fuck the politicians if they don't listen. People believe they have to show the world we don't support what's our government and shitty entities like Blackwater are doing in Iraq. I think there are beneficial functions & consequences of protests and movements even if they are not immediately seen. Change takes time.

But we've got our French Fries back so that's a sign of improving relations. I do agree that boycotts are effective, and have their place as a tool of protest but the WTO is an organization whose policies are a mystery to most people - people whose lives and livelihoods are directly affected. So a live demonstration serves in educating people as well as to protest.

We had a group here in NC try to bomb a train off the track to at the same time to show "solidarity" with the protesters in Seattle. Turns out for all three of the numbskulls were unemployed and collecting welfare.
If you are such a bad ass why are you taking check from "The Man"? I never understand how people do their best to demonize and destroy business that are actually are the ones hiring people, while offering no viable alternative.
Do some rich cat CEOs make off with a lot of money off of peoples backs? Sure it happens. But the best way to reduce poverty in the world is to embrace capitalism like in South Korea (compare to the North) and not in some half ass fashion like Mexico does. Only a prick like Hugo Chavez that lives in a country that has a ton of oil, and no concern about destroying their environment, can you ever hope to sustain some type of socialist system. Merrick, what a terrible analysis. People in America have relatively little to protest. Its the young and ignorant romantics that flock to such public displays of self gratifying moral outrage. Protesting is noble, but only when a society is repressed to the point where there is no other way to make an argument for or against something. Everything else is just a failed attempt to influence public policy without reasoned discourse. That, my friend, is laziness.

Case in point: When you watch, you always hear about "the USA has won 10 medals" etc. Actually, it's supposed to be the individual athletes who win the medals, not the country they hail from. But of course the governments involved all use the event as a propaganda-generating machine just as the corporate sponsors use them as a money-making machine. all I know is that I've been to Seattle twice. The first time, in 1994, it seemed like an incredibly cool city and I wanted to live there. Ten years later, the whole place seemed very tense, I heard stories of cops overreacting to the slightest thing, and I was part of a violent incident at a club that could have been avoided if the people who worked there hadn't been looking for a fight. Now I don't want to go back. I was certainly surprised to discover people were more laid back in Chicago. Maybe they weren't in '68, but they got over it. BTW, who's playing Starhawk in this movie?

'It changed history'. That's rich. Most people in Seattle barely remember it. I don't know how socially significant any of it was, I just know I had a blast. I was in the thick of it, scrapping and mixing it up. I was in high school at the time and I had no idea what the WTO was, I just wanted to spraypaint in the middle of the day and break shit. It was one of the funnest days of my life. Anyway, this movie looks bloated and annoying, much like myself. If there are no "PLUS ONE' tags in the movie, the production designer didn't do his or her job right; Plus fucking KILLED downtown that day.

To me the worst part of the movie is that they filmed most of it in Vancouver. Fuck that! And the Seattle International Film Festival *still* took at as their opening film! That's gonna be a weird screening because I don't know how people can not laugh when it's in the wrong place and Ray Liotta is playing the mayor.
To me the most interesting part of what happened had nothing to do with the WTO, it was at night when the cops (shipped in from around the state) for some reason marched up the hill into the Capitol Hill neighborhood and started launching tear gas canisters into bars and gas stations and beating up random people in cars and shit. At this point the violence was against normal people in their own neighborhood and wasn't even anywhere near any WTO meeting or protest. People from the neighborhood started to gather outside the police station and it was this protest that actually made a difference - the next day the city was humiliated into just using peaceful bike police instead of the storm troopers with the rubber bullets, tear gas, concussion grenades, beanbags, etc. And of course it worked, there were no problems once they did that.

    by superduper3000

With all due respect to anyone willing to go out and parade themselves in one of these protests, I have to question their intentions as throughout history they've never really been effective...

So why do people continue to strap on the anti-this and anti-that T-Shirt, marked up poster board, masks, sunglasses, and organize themselves outside screaming and ranting?

Think all those Vietnam protests work? Think again...LBJ ignored them and it wasn't until a troubled Nixon ended the war that the hippie culture took credit...and Nixon was hardly a fan of those people. It was just economics.

Take the recent Olympic Protests going on in the world...not to mention the responses from Hillary Clinton to boycott the opening ceremonies (sorry athletes, you're just pawns in this political game). That'll never work, and it never will. Sure looks good in activist circles, but then again logic and follow-through were never their strong suits...

So again, not to inflame open wounds, I just question the methodology of these protesters and wonder if they realize how superficial these events really are. I hope it makes them feel good to go out and place themselves in victim-hood status (surely the downtrodden themselves have better things to do then mass ensemble), attacking police and wondering why they're being tear-gassed... but then this is American, and we do have the right to assemble. Peaceful assembly, anyway.

First off, to the Asshat named Traumnovelle - You take pride in what you did? How stupid are you?"Ooh! Look at me, I'm breaking windows and vandalizing crap in broad daylight...I'm such a badass!" No, your just useless and stupid. What's the matter...mommy not give you enough teet growing up? Were you lashing out to cover up other shortcomings? Poor baby... Something else that didn't cross your pea-brain was that there were people in the area who weren't protesting, but just trying to get the hell out of the area becuase their place of employment shut down as a result of the chaos going on. Broken windows are replaced. Graffiti on walls is painted over, you still have your shortcomings and life goes on. As to other posters questions...I knew the Sonics were as good as gone the moment that Starbucks Twat sold them (news around town is now getting out that the new owners had no intention of keeping the team here regardless of what kind of arena we may have built for them). We get to keep the Seattle Storm (WNBA), and at least they know how to win a championship. Vern, given how much Seattle charges to film movies/television shows around here, I'm not surprised they went to B.C. Liotta, wrong casting choice for mayor - Leslie Neilsen would have been more accurate, since Mayor Schell was a joke anyway (our new mayor isn't much better). The clueless twits who planned to bring the WTO conference to Seattle didn't think there would be so many people protesting, they were more concerned about the weather being nice.

there's so much factually incorrect with what you have said... I have friends in Iraq (some that came back in coffins) and the oil companies aren't making money off of their deaths... at all. You know that if you combine state and federal taxes, the government makes about 6 times the money of the gasoline (that "Big Oil" purchases, bring into the US, refines, and makes available everywhere) that "Big Oil" makes? Also, the rise in prices has to do with, primarily, commodity traders dealing with the chaos in the oil market (via the nature of their trade), not with Bush or Halliburton.

you're saying that now... that wasn't what you said before. This shouldn't have to be said, but here it goes: no industrial nation can exist without oil, period. Also, the two largest exporters of the oil the US consumes come from the north and the (combined) south of our borders. The Middle East is third. The US is never going to completely replace oil as an energy source, unless we want to head back to the Middle Ages.

    the movie

    by the real mirajeff

is actually pretty good. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Stuart Townsend did a really solid job his first time out. Make no mistake, this is an ensemble movie all the way. Going into it I thought we'd be following Charlize's character the whole time but no, they mix it up, and in doing so, Martin Henderson actually steals the show. I didn't even recognize him from shit like Torque and The Ring but here he actually gets a juicy part he sinks his teeth into. Woody Harrelson is also pretty good, and certainly the best performance he's given lately considering how he's been slumming the last few months thru Semi-Pro, Sleepwalking and The Grand. The opening credit sequence rivals The Kingdom's. It's an intense dramatic thriller that I intend to review soon, although I thought it was coming out in Marc or May, not friggin' September. As someone who didn't know much about the WTO and that weekend in Seattle, I felt like it was very informative. You should definitely check it out if the subject matter interests you.

You didn't terrorize Downtown Seattle, and you didn't make history. You want to know what you really did...okay, I'll use small words so your still-retarded post high-school brain can comprehend everything.First, your vandalism and tagging made a mess, one that was cleaned up after you had your fun.Second, you pissed off law enforcement. So much so, they ended up in Capital Hill harassing anyone and everyone living there (don't believe me, see Vern's post above). Most of them had absolutly nothing to do with the WTO Protests. What makes you so special that innocent people just trying to live their lives and stay of harms way have to deal with angered cops?Third, the majority of the people (not just retail) who worked in the area and had to clear out were not compensated for their lost wages, as well as try to figure out where they could catch a bus (mass transit stopped running in the downtown corridor, and even if people drove, it was nearly impossible to drive around). Thanks to your stupidity, the Hollywood Hack machine has created another cookie-cutter film designed to dumb down the events of that weekend. Great job, you twit.

    STEVIE: ABOUT OIL AND WAR

    by bringingsexyback

Oil has reached peak production. That's not only a fact, but a fact long since known by everyone connected with the oil industry. Our Canadian suppliers are literally squeezing oil from sand now. Watch a documentary called The End Of Suburbia (and see endofsuburbia.com) in which the topic is discussed by numerous specialists in the field. One expert you may find of interest is Matthew Simmons (read his partial bio here: http://www.endofsuburbia.com/cast.htm).

What's not mentioned, but is also well known, is that he was part of Cheney's secret Energy Task Force whose pre-Iraq invasion report detailed that country's oil fields. Those oil fields were secured before anything else after the invasion, and Iraq's oil was immediately privatized by Paul Bremer.

I agree with your statement: "no industrial nation can exist without oil, period". But with China and India now outpacing the West in consumption rates and with so many developing countries now competing for a diminishing supply of oil, the world will be seeing a drastic transformation in the next few decades. That means within your lifetime, and the lifetimes of everyone here.

If we're to be an intelligent nation with an eye towards maintaining our quality of living, our standards, our preeminence, and even our survival, we have no choice but to develop alternative energy sources as well as reducing our current rate of oil and gas consumption. That's the only way we can stretch our supply for a long duration, enough to transition to alternative energy.

Ender's point is well taken. There are a myriad of reasons why Iraq was invaded. Oil is indeed one of them, and soldiers have died to protect it, and to secure it. It's not a noble sacrifice for them if we're not going to even acknowledge it.

Oil prices hit another record, and it's not just due to trade and speculation. It's a function of demand and supply. Back to basic economics. And we'll be seeing the effects of those price increases at the pump, in the price of everyday items you and I buy, in short time. Already gas has gone up to $3.55 here in NYC. How much is it where you live? How do we put faith in a President who, at the last press conference, was asked by a reporter what he thought about gas prices being projected to go up to $4 a gallon by summertime, and whose response was "I didn't hear about that". This country is being led blind.

    Watching From On High

    by playhouse

It was a helluvan interesting perspective to watch everything that was happening from the 60th floor of the Columbia Center (the tall black building in Seattle for all of you who aren't from here). Looking down towards Westlake and seeing the fires starting. Seeing the mass of people on 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st, and on down to the waterfront was surreal. The same looking down the other side towards I-5. All capped when they shut the city down at 5pm as we hopped the ferry. Just a truly odd experience.

Is hurting my brain. For the record, Anarchists and Communists hate each other. Also, most of the idiotic pricks who go out and break stuff are not Anarchists. I'd bet they wouldn't even know what Anarchism really is and are only interested in venting in their sad and pathetic way and using what they undestand through the retarded lense of consume culture as Anarchism (ie chaos and nihlism wearing a Che shirt) as their excuse. The WTO is fucked up and needs to be fucking destroyed, but you aren't going to do that with a riot. One of the lessons I learned going to an Anarchist training camp was that if you're going to bring about real effective change and actully get peope to listen to you, you have to meet them on their level. You can't run up to them in stupid smelly rainbow-coloured hemp clothes with dreddies and bare feet. You wear what they wear, you talk like they talk, you use patience, reason and logic. All of this protest action is bullshit because it's not the actions of a majority seeking social change. If it was we'd see revolution in a heartbeat, but we're not. Until you get the majority on your side you aren't going to change anything substantial and you damn sure aren't going to change the minds of the people that hold power. All of these actions are the actions of people who are still working through this, I believe, and haven't developed the self-discipline to spread their ideas peacefully and patiently.

Although they did only serve vegan food which was seriously crap. Also there was a disproportionate amount of lesbians and very damaged girls there. Hard times for my horny-as-fuck fellow Anarchists who came along. The landlord came out and told them to get inside for their own safety as she'd just heard the "rally" was coming down that street. They waited 25 minutes and eventually one lone hippie dressed as a cow came running down the centre of the road being chased by the police. Fucking crusties. Xiphos, I actually consider myself a feminist. I believe that females should have the same rights and priviliges that males get. They deserve the right to vote, the right to equal pay, the right to free expression, the right to control their own bodies and more importantly their own lives. The amusing thing is that feminism is so deeply ingrained into our cultural fabric that we don't even really think about it anymore. Most people ARE feminists. They believe in equal gender rights, which is the core goal of the ideology. I think you're referring more to the anti-masculinist. That is, somebody who either hates or fears men and lashes out at what they percieve to be injustices against the "natural order", that is, Matriachy. To be fair, from my experience, a lot of these people have been very damaged by sexual abuse or have been actively discriminated against for their homosexuality and use anti-masculinism as their way of lashing out at the world. Thinking about it from their perspective, it's hard not to take what I see as a meaningless joke as something deeply offensive. It's hyperbolic to make the comparison, but it's like making Jewish jokes in front of a holocaust survivor. A lot of the time if a person doesn't know you, they'll often assume your serious. Particularly in these circumstances because it's likely they've heard these things being said by people who were NOT joking. Personally, what I think these people need is therapy and to see that some men are actually decent people and aren't rape-crazed monsters.

What's most aggravating about these fucking scumbags is that they'll destroy storefronts and vandalize ("All property is theft!") anything they come across, and hurl lethal cobblestones at the heads of police officers, but if they're chased or arrested they'll start screaming about "police brutality" and "fascism".

To this very day in Sweden, these pigs are still trying to get police officers arrested for making them "lie down on the asphalt" after being arrested during the riots. The horror!

I say that if they start hurling potentially deadly stones, it's time to open fire - and I don't mean with rubber bullets.

We are in basic agreement about the link between price and demand. Not only is the US consuming more oil each year, China and India have developed large apatites as well. Basically global demand keeps rising and so does price. I was mentioning the commodity traders primarily because of the backwardation in the oil spot market (long story short, it's a sign that the oil market isn't functioning as it should due to concerns about the ability to be supplied in even the immediate future).

However, it always pays to be skeptical of the Malthusians. People have been saying for decades now that peak production had been reached, and production kept increasing. As you mentioned, it is becoming economically justified for Alberta to start recovering oil from their oil sands (which contain a 175 billion barrels of proven reserve, largest outside of Saudi Arabia). But that oil sand oil costs $15 a barrel to produce, as opposed to Saudi's $2 a barrel. Basically, we are running out of oil fields finds that are easily drilled, but we aren't running out of new fields. We're just having to go further offshore or tap fields that were previously, prohibitively expensive.

Basically, we will never run out of oil. Oil's price will just keep increasing, and as it increases, other forms of energy will become economical to implement.

Sorry, but an enraged mob of "autonomous" street scum hurling cobblestones at people's heads and bodies is at times "deadly force" and at the very least extremely dangerous. In a case like that I would most definitely condone the use of firearms - preferably against legs, but also against the center of mass if an immediate threat to life and limb is tangible.

There are people who share the political views of the rioters but believe in the democratic process. Why wouldn't I doubt that you would use such a "clever" cutdown? Damn. You liberals never cease to amaze me! You people are incapable of holding a civilized conversation. You people sit here in the TalkBacks for hours a day -- while the rest of us "poor folk" have to work and go to school. Ironically, you have the balls (or possibly, infected ovaries) to question my education. Hmmm...you just don't think that a black man born into the ghetto can work and earn his PhD at the same time, do you?...and you wonder why the hell you lose national elections? Do you people really think that the rest of America is just like you? Keep on dreaming, silly liberals. When McCain wins 300 electoral votes and gets elected President, you people will still be here scratching your heads and complaining about all of us "evil, unintelligent neocons." But it all has to be part of some giant "conspiracy" doesn't it? I suppose that this is why so many libtards preach that Republicans probably "steal" elections. If you ask me, I think that there are far too many LSD babies born (liberal social disorder) which might make abortion -- a horrendous evil -- at least somewhat helpful in society. We're in agreement. Although I disagree on the statement "... we will never run out of oil" as an absolute, but I don't think you even meant it that way. Besides oil being a finite resource, it also ceases to be a useful one when its cost is so high as to be prohibitive. I agree with your point about adapting to the higher prices in the short term and developing more economical alternative sources. The cost of oil will eventually be so high that it will dramatically alter our entire society and the world. Better we adapt our society, by means of conservation and developing/using alternative energy, and to err on the safe side than be shocked by the changes.

No, what is evil is telling a woman that she can KILL an unborn baby who eats, dreams, feels pain, and has unlimited potential -- and then telling the woman that it is a "matter of privacy." I wonder: Since when did murder become a matter of privacy? Or do you still think that an preborn baby is "not alive?" Not even the Democrats are uttering that nonsense anymore. A woman can do anything with her body that she wants. But does that mean that she can kill the body of another human being that is being developed inside of her? Last I knew, the "right of privacy" still prevents people from killing unwanted guests in their home (unless their life is in danger). But abortion has become the fundamental right for the left, hasn't it?

I empathize with your anger, just like Ender's above. But destruction of property plays very poorly in the war to win hearts and minds. Even a Starbucks store, or Subway, though having a corporate face, is privately owned by a franchisee. It's private property. To me, private property is sacred in this country. Destruction of any property, private or public, is an unnecessary waste. Heed TheOneBlood's (self-described anarchist) posts about changing minds through dialogue. That really is most effective. I take serious issue with your abortion stance- If you reduce it to it's basis you seem to believe in the absoute sanctity of human life- so riddle me this: When does life start? at conception? Because I seriously doubt if a collection of cells counts as being aware. Nobody would advocate abortion of a foetus at 8 months, but when it is little more than a collection of cells? As always this is a grey area and the typical right wing response to it is to paint it in black and white using emotive terms such as "murder". It is not murder- under any definition: moral, legal, whatever. This is also not to mention the method of conception, or the viability of the child itself. And not to mention the inherent contradiction (and I bet this is correct, albeit an assumption) that you will be pro-death penalty.

A lunatic? C'mon, guy! So the anti-abortion advocates are now all a bunch of lunatics? 94% of Americans oppose some forms of abortion (such as partial-birth abortion or abortion as a means of birth control). Yes, the majority supports it if a woman is raped or her life is in danger (so do I). But do you really think that the rest of us are "lunatics" for not agreeing with you? ...you might want to read the developmental stages of human development in the womb. A fetus can THINK and DREAM while at the latter stages of the first trimester. This brain activity is far greater than any "born" animal. We put Michael Vick in prison for dog fights and we applaud women for utilizing their "choice" to kill a preborn baby. Have you ever read the statistics about "back alley abortions?" They are tremendously blown out of proportion by the left. Yes, they occurred. But so does other forms of murder. What is the difference between a woman who flushes her newborn down the toilet and a woman who has an abortion? About an hour and an inch of flesh. But the girl who flushes the newborn will go to prison while the woman with an abortion will simply go home (but always remembering what she did). No one is advocating the arrest and forcing a woman to carry a child to full term. But should abortion be limited to the first month? The first two months? The first trimester? Any time a woman gets scared of the responsibility of motherhood? At what point should a woman be allowed to destroy her unborn child? It is too bad an unborn child has no say in the matter. Anyway, I guess that I've said too much. I know that a lot of liberals seemingly hate those who suggest that abortion is an evil. But my mother was beaten and hospitalized by my father because she refused to have an abortion. I am the product of my mother's choice for life (even though TBers might "cleverly" scoff at her decision). I am, however, eternally grateful to my Mom for making a decision on my behalf. Damn...I've got to run. I'm going to be late, but I won't be around to read the HATE responses from so many "clever" TBers. *sigh

You're right. I believe in the sanctity of HUMAN life. At what point does a fetus become "human?" I don't know and I don't pretend to know. I suspect, however, that an unborn child that could live outside of the womb should be protected from an abortion. BTW, my oldest sister gave birth to a very premature child. Her husband and her were poor and the doctor reminded her of her "options." He told her that the baby had less than a 20% chance to live. Yes, he needed some hospital care for the first four months -- but he is now a 5th grade honor student with no medical problems. No, I do not know the answers to this. But I don't think that we should simply ignore the problem. Abortion has become a means of birth controll in this nation -- propagated by Planned Parenthood (initially as a means of racial eugenics). It is still outlawed in many western nations. Ironically, they don't seem to have much of a problem with coathangers stuck in a woman's vagina. Anyway, a viable solution should be discussed rather than a blank check for abortions by Democrats. I am disgusted that Obama tried to pass legislature in Illinois that would allow an 11 or 12 year old to have a "secret abortion" without her parents ever knowing about it. This didn't work when a little 12 year-old girl died last year in Massachusetts. The Middle School counselor knocked on the door and surprised the mother with some "bad news." Gotta run (for real this time). Thanks!

I'm going to flay that horribly ignorant post alive without resorting to hatespeech: "94% of Americans oppose some forms of abortion (such as partial-birth abortion or abortion as a means of birth control). Yes, the majority supports it if a woman is raped or her life is in danger (so do I)." Complete hogwash. What you are doing here depends entirely upon how the question is phrased, and as you haven't supplied the context for these figures then they are meaningless- even beccause as you say yourself, the majority support it in some instances. You have inherently contradicted yourself.

"you might want to read the developmental stages of human development in the womb. A fetus can THINK and DREAM while at the latter stages of the first trimester. This brain activity is far greater than any "born" animal. We put Michael Vick in prison for dog fights and we applaud women for utilizing their "choice" to kill a preborn baby." This is exactly what I mean by emotive language. The woman is not killing her baby, she is terminating her foetus. Hugely different.

"Have you ever read the statistics about "back alley abortions?" They are tremendously blown out of proportion by the left. Yes, they occurred. But so does other forms of murder." See my previous comment about statistics. In this case- as you yourself seem to be advocating- one murder is too many, and it is fundamentally wrong to say that women being killed as a direct result of a botched abortion is similar to other forms of murder. It isn't.

"What is the difference between a woman who flushes her newborn down the toilet and a woman who has an abortion? About an hour and an inch of flesh." Again. This is complete rubbish. No pro-choice advocate would EVER suggest that abortion should be legal up to birth. That is a fallacy made by the right in an attempt to attach emtion to a clinical subject. "But the girl who flushes the newborn will go to prison while the woman with an abortion will simply go home (but always remembering what she did)." Now surely the guilt of abortion patients (something not to be underestimated) is a punishment that they will always have to live with. Anyway, regardless of that, no pro-choice advocate would pretend that he would want the murderess to not be punished. You are attempting to muddy the waters in an insulting and hysterical way.

"No one is advocating the arrest and forcing a woman to carry a child to full term." And your alternatives are? You have not considered the practicalities of your stance. "But should abortion be limited to the first month? The first two months? The first trimester? Any time a woman gets scared of the responsibility of motherhood? At what point should a woman be allowed to destroy her unborn child?" Once again, this is a transparent attempt to over-emote on the issue. You use inflammatory language to essentially disguise the key point. A woman should be aloud to terminate a pregnancy before it can be said to be conscious. I would agree that the current limit is too high (although abortions that late are not a picnic), but I would make a distinction between a collection of cells and an awareness. And there has never, ever, been any suggestion of Abortion as contraception. Again no sensible pro-choice advocate would suggest such a thing. "It is too bad an unborn child has no say in the matter." And it is too bad a cow didn't have a say in my lunch, or a bowel of lentils had a say in being a hippy's lunch, or a tree had in being paper. This is complete bollocks. What organism, if it had the ability to talk would say "please kill me".

I'm not going to scoff at your story. That is not relevant to the issue, although it does inform.

I believe very strongly that the innocent can and should be protected. This is why I think that the current limit is too high. I forgot to say that I also fucking resent the assertion made by the likes of Chrism that there is some sort of clapping circle around where evil liberals celebrate abortion. by toadkillerdog

The big issue. This one will never be resolved. Ever. That is not to say it should not be debated, but it will never be resolved. Anchorite, you have posted a scientifically based possible solution (at least as far as the State determining when life starts) that is plausible, however it fails because those who are opposed to abortion, in most cases, do not see it as a scientifically provable point. Lost Jarv, you make some sound arguments, and I love the British sensibility that you bring to most of the TB's, but you are missing the really big picture. The big Issue: Pro-lifers, the hard core ones, do not think that the 'collection of cells' as you call it is any less that the divinely blessed beginning of life. And that, is why abortion will never be resolved. It is religion. The most fervent of the anti-abortionists believe that the soul is imparted at conception. Forget about blastocysts. This is high religion, crossing every denomination, every social strata, every racial or ethnic group. This is the one issue than can unite diverse people on both sides of the argument. Liberal, conservative. If you believe that the soul is imparted at conception, then that is a God blessed life. Now, the contradiction, of course comes in when those same groups find themselves reversed on the death penalty - the soul is still there, but we will take it away. The moral quandry is 'resolved' in some by the simple expedient of 'innocence'. A child, is innocent. You may call it a blastocyst, others call it a human being.

I'm approaching the end of my office hours (I teach undergraduate classes). Am I opposed to abortion? --- Yes (at least, some forms of it) because I believe in the sanctity of life. Am I against Euthanasia or mercy killing? --- Not if a person is undoubtedly terminal. They should have the right to make up their own minds about their own bodies. Abortion, however, allows a mother to kill the body of another human being. Do I believe in capital punishment? --- Not at all -- because I believe in the sanctity of life. I believe that crime should be severely punished, but there are far worse things than death (like LIVING with the knowledge of having harmed someone). I am not a "pro-life extremist" any more than you are a "pro-choice extremist," my liberal fiend. Roe v. Wade was decided solely upon the issue of a RIGHT FOR PRIVACY. It was one of the worst decisions in the history of the Court (right up there with Dred Scott and Plessy v. Fergusen). It was poorly argued -- and the liberal justices even admitted that! They allowed the attorney for Roe to come back with a better argument! I'm not sure, but I think that this was a first for the Court. Just check it out at www DOT oyez DOT org and type in "Roe v. Wade" in the search form. Ironically, the most likely scenario to overturn the Court's decision is by using the 1971-1973 decision (it took 2 years to argue, reargue and decide) against the abortion cause. The 1973 decision said that abortion in the first trimester (and in limited cases during the second) was a RIGHT TO PRIVACY. However, the Court never defined limitations to the RIGHT TO PRIVACY. Does such a right (under the 14th Amendment) supercede the right for "Equal Protection Under the LAw" (also in the 14th Amendment)? At what point does such a "right" allow the destruction of a human being? In 1973, the Court decided the issue without even considering at what point a human being exists. Abortionists and liberals call a preborn child a "fetus." Yet most states carry criminal charges against those who willfully or knowingly harm a woman AND her unborn child (as separate criminal charges). Even California charge Scott Peterson (the husband of Lacey Peterson) for killing BOTH his wife AND his unborn child (Conner). Once again, the difference between abortion and murder is often just where the killing takes place. If a child is killed INSIDE the womb, it is an abortion applauded by liberals everywhere. If it takes place moments after it is removed from the womb, it is considered MURDER. The only difference is WHERE the killing of the human being takes place. An inch of flesh is all the difference between abortion and murder. Where is the logic in this? I understand that you might not agree with us, but understand that we are not "extremists" for believing in the value of an unborn child's life. An unborn child has complicated brain waves (indicating thoughts and dreams), feels pain, and eats. Yet it is fair game to those who prefer a "right to privacy" over "equal protection under the law" extended to all living human beings. It is sad when some people value unborn whales more than unborn human beings. A person will go to jail for destroying an egg of an endangered specie, but gets applauded for "choosing" to end the life of a preborn child. What a strange world!

NPR seemed to be the only mainstream news oranization to give a fair and balanced report at the time. The problems in Seattle were caused by the police riot. The 50,000 protestors were generally well-organized and protesting peacefully. Yes, there were 10 or 20 self-proclaimed anarchists in masks, but none of the police action was in respnse to that vandalism. Wish I had been there personally.

    by ccchhhrrriiisssm

If you had ever taken the time to REALLY read my posts (before shouting "clever" responses), you would understand that I see the world -- not in black and white -- but in vivid, living color. Unfortunately, some political and social bigotry is a cataract on the eyes of some liberals and conservatives. As a conservative (with libertarian trends), I have been mocked for my beliefs, my "ignorant" belief in God, and my views on controversial issues. Yet the ones who make those claims just can't notice that they are often more guilty for political prejudice than any of those to whom they point the judgmental finger of hatred. The only reason that I comment is to simply bring up an alternative perspective to those wildly "clever" liberal allegations so often spewed in the TB. Too bad people often "tolerate" only those who agree with them.

    BTW...

    by ccchhhrrriiisssm

I am all for "fair trade." It is the only "moral" means of justice. Unfortunately (or perhaps, fortunately), capitalism decrees for "economic darwinism." Frontline did a wonderful piece on the topic how "fair trade" is helping individuals in Central and South America. Perhaps it should be a part of our trade policy? I have long felt that we should penalize any country who doesn't maintain a viable "living wage" for their people. This includes China -- which raked in millions during the Clinton Administration. While Clinton probably meant to use open trade as a means of bringing democracy to China, it isn't working quite as well as he would have liked. Sure, there are plenty of choices now. But people are still imprisoned and killed for their exercises of free speech and religion. And slave labor is more central to the Chinese economy than anyone would dare suggest. A simple solution is to impose import tariffs on goods coming from nations who do not provide a "living wage" for workers. Such a living wage would shrink the disparity between small upper class and vast lower class segments of the population. It might even help curb the influx of illegal workers into the United States (from Mexico and Central America). Good stuff!

You are disingenuous. I can not speak for all on these talk backs, but the primary reason why I dislike your posts (most of them that is) is because of your vitriolic and uninformed statements. It is one thing to have a genuinely different viewpoint, and to argue persuasively for that. I commend that type - but you and some others on here, lack that subtlety. No, I find most of your arguments not only pedantic, but inane. And your continued insistence on stating that you are a 'conservative black man' is perhaps the most inane of all. Who cares what your color is? An ignorant point of view is ignorant regardless of the ethnic group of the poster. And no one will ever truly know if you are indeed black - which is really irrelevant in any case. I happen to be Outer Mongolian - ok, not really, but does it matter if I was? For someone who constantly professes (methinks too much?) about your work on a PH.D you come across as very childish most of the time. Hope this helps!

Also, you tend to play "mine is bigger than yours" in your arguments...which is just lame and suspect. Thank you for your ignorant reply. I commented about being black a few months ago as a result of some people accusing me of not understanding racism (since I was a conservative). I haven't heard the end of it since. There are soooo many voices here in the TB -- so when I reply about my education and race, it is directed at those who have mocked me for it. As far as your ignorant post that questions my struggle to earn an education while working and my intellect: I have nothing to prove. Regardless of what I say, I will be roasted and mocked by the worst of you. Afterward, you will pat yourselves on the back and congratulate yourselves for putting another "ignorant right wing nut" in his place. Some of you are just typical examples of the liberal bigottry found on "free speech" websites. You cannot tolerate a single thought that goes against your own limited worldview. You feel the itch to mock and ridicule anyone who has something to say that you disagree with. You make your attacks personal. But what should I expect? This has been the tactics of liberals for years. Your answer to anything is ridicule. I wonder what will happen if you ever truly realized that conservatives are not nearly as "evil" as you think we are? What would happen if you realized that President Bush is not nearly as "evil" or "stupid" as you think he is? There are actually people in the TB who believe that 9/11 was an "inside job" and that the war in Iraq "was about oil." Their favorite words are NEOCON, RIGHT WINGNUT, CHENEY, KARL ROVE, SEAN HANNITY, RUSH LIMBAUGH and HALLIBURTON. What would happen if your eyes were opened and you saw people and situations for what they really are? Most of us are sincere. Sadly, it is the sincere folk who are the most obvious targets of far-left extremism. Why? Because most sincere individuals do not feel the need to "fight" back. It is easy to be deceived in the absence or alternative ideas that enhance critical thinking skills. I congratulate you for your wonderful display of bigotry toward anyone with a thought that differs from your own. Liberals mock anti-abortion people. They mock conservatives. They mock religious folk (particulary, Christians). They mock Republicans. They mock minorities who don't buy into the idea of a educated, conservative African American or Hispanic citizen. They question the education of anyone who disagrees with them. It is a supreme example of the liberal idea of "tolerance."

So you think that you behave any better? Look at the way that Liberals treat Conservatives and then how Conservatives treat Liberals. I am probably the best example of using the same LIBERAL TACTICS in replying in the TB. The reason that I am viewed largely as a "ignorant right wingnut" is because I simply took the same, tired rhetoric spewed by loud, frequent TBers against Republicans like Bush, Cheney, McCain, et al., and used it (word for word) against Obama and Hillary. Tolerance and respect is a two-way street, my fiend. Somehow, liberals get their panties tied in knots when someone returns their words right back at them! You can tell how much it hurts when I find myself the target of such hate. Liberal bigotry is such a great tool for gaining recruits to the Democratic Party! Good job! But I wonder how many people are inspired by liberal words of intolerance and hate -- especially when liberals can't tell that they are spreading intolerance and hate? We'll see in November!

You have proven my point. First of all, I am not a liberal. But anyone who disagrees with YOU is cast as a liberal extremist. There is no middle ground, or compromise on your part, just pure vitriol.

I like a good debate, I like sound reasoning, I like hearing from another point of view - an intelligent, well argued, nuanced point of view. Yes, I am asking far too much from this site, but anyway, you never present that type argument.

You almost never answer a direct question either. You continue to post made up facts and figures, and when someone calls you on it, you just try a different tact. I do agree with one thing you said, it is a free website, and you are free to state your opinions. Nothing wrong with that. And I do lament that the extremists on the LEFT can be idiotic as well.

Hatred, and stupidity are not exclusive of any point on the political spectrum.

I have a theory, an admittedly pop-psychology one, you and others of your ilk (inflexible, narrow-minded, always attacking), get a kick out of being the focal point of the majority on this site who oppose your views. You get a charge that does not come for you in the real world, or on another site that would fit with you ideolgy (because you would just be another nameless 'ditto-head').

...doesn't always mean just that. In fact, sometimes (he was referring to pilots dropping bombs, as I remember it) pilots, whether launching cruise missles or not, get shot at and worse. So, it takes more guts to go into a target knowing you may get blown out of the sky, or worse, captured, than knowing you're gonna die anyway and get all those virgins to comfort you later. I think suicide bombers are the chicken-shits. Basically Bill detest anything relating to the military so has has no real basis to make that particular comparison other than his smarmy attitude. IOW, he was talking out of his ass. Generally, I agree with Bill but he's got some off the wall thoughts and he's quite the bigot. Our bombers only hit targets of military importance while doing all they can to limit civilian casualties, within reason. The 9/11 hijackers specifically targeted civilians. By American morals, going after civilian targets and not military targets is both unforgivably evil and fundamentally cowardly. I realize the hijackers had a different set of morals, but those morals carry zero weight for Americans.

    by laserpants

Why is it that NeoCons are so obsessed with birth, but then couldn't possibly care less about the actual human being that results from it? What, you want to force these children to be born into a world of grinding poverty and neglect that ultra-right-wing policies have created? Thats sick! I mean seriously, you couldn't care less about actual human beings: its as if you want them to suffer. Lets be consistent here, because your whole argument is totally hypocritical. Even many evangelicals have this viewpoint -- Huckabee himself said that he thinks we have a responsibility to the child both before AND after birth, and that we need to insure these children, ALL children, have access to the education and social services they need in order to survive and thrive. I may not agree with him on other issues, but I can at least respect his viewpoint for being consistent. If you REALLY cared about children being born, than you should be extra focused on their ACTUAL LIVES; striving to make their lives better through a fully funded educational system, social services, and the like. The NeoCon stance on this point especially is such a screaming hypocrisy; obsessed to the point of fanaticism with birth, but couldn't care less about the child that results from it. How does that make any sense at all? If you could give me any kind of answer without resorting to insults or screaming, I'd really appreciate it. Defend your position in a sane, rational way. Can you do it? I challenge thee!

Because bombing civilians is relatively easy...

    by morgoth

...they're not trying to shoot you down. That's another reason terrorist are cowards, they attack those who can't defend themselves. Also, "carpet bombing" is an over used cliche. The US doesn't do that anymore and the only time we ever did, on purpose, was WWII for reasons of Total War. All of the combatants were doing the exact same thing and if you don't think the Japanese military was developing atomic weapons to drop on the US then you are seriously naive. Terrorist, by definition, are cowards for attacking soft targets. In fact, the WWII bombing of London, Rotterdam by the Nazi's was called "terror" bombing. The difference, of course, is that it took guts for the Luftwaffe (just as it did for Allied pilots) to go back, mission after mission, to face enemy flak and fighters...many did not return or were horribly wounded. Compare that with today's suicide bomber who hijacks a civilian airliner for a one-shot plunge into paradise. Chicken-shit cowards who don't have to answer to anything. To compare them to our airmen is an atrocious insult any way you look at it and Maher was completely out of line for even making the comparison. Just like last nights' show where he didn't see anything wrong with the teens setting up a friend, taping the beating then posting it online. A cure for Oil

    by raysquirrel

I get crazy when people think that oil will bring down civilization. Especially when people bring up that STUPID movie the End of Suburbia.

BringBackSexy and everyone else on this board would do themselves good to look up the Progressive Automotive X Prize. It is a prize designed to motivate innovation in the automotive industry.

It is reassuring to know that by this time next year there will be a slew of new vehicles that 100 miles to the gallon. So all of you Chatty Cathy's screaming your head off about the end times, COOL IT! There are smart people working on these things.

No one is screaming End Times. I was talking about conservation and alternative energy to supplement oil. And how exactly was End of Suburbia "stupid"? And if you think "by this time next year" there will be a "slew" of vehicles getting 100MPH, you're dreaming. The car industry is still fighting higher minimum gas mileage requirements, and is keeping buried an already existent solution - the electric car. Because the oil industry provides the fuel for the automotive makers to produce the cars, they also demand that the makers continue to make cars that rely on that fuel to run, nevermind the fact that car technology existed that did not need a drop of gasoline. But you must already know that, right?

    BSB

    by stevie grant

there's just... so much wrong with what you posted. But, some asshole pulled the fire alarm in my dorm, and I waited it out at the bar 50 feet away from where I live, plus an extra two hours. I'll try to remember to post here tomorrow, and argue that the auto makers aren't evil incarnate, but I'm not making any promises. Fuckin' aye... I'm somewhat glad I just blew $30 bucks getting drunk with friends; but I will kick the shit out of whoever pulled the fire alarm.

You've got industry all wrong BSB...

    by raysquirrel

An industry is not a physical monolithic entity like a corporation or a government. The reason government mandates for minimum gas mileage don't work is because it is the government attempting to force a handful of already inefficient companies to change their standards. It doesn't matter that there are already cars on the market that get 40MPG. It is only recently that most major car manufacturers see customer demand for more fuel efficient vehicles.

The electric car was buried because it did not sell and was not efficient. It was efficient enough for California, but outside of the general L.A. area it was practically worthless. Try to drive an EV1 up a hill. What would you do if the EV1 stopped in the middle of the road and was out of juice. It did not sell because gas was a cheaper fuel. And if you think about it, they really weren't that environmentally friendly. Unless the electricity was coming from a nuclear power plant, the electricity the car used was burning either gas or coal.

Conservation, ha, you are the one who is dreaming. You will never get people to willingly conserve energy; not as long as you need energy to transport food, clothing and other necessary goods, not as long as you need energy to heat your homes, not as long as you need energy to fuel the machinery, and transport and produce the materials that are used to build your homes, not as long as you need energy from the fuel you use to transport you to your place of work so you can earn the money that you use to compensate the people who expel energy to provide you with the food you eat, the clothes you wear, to build the house you live in, to heat the house you live in, and provide you with all the other goods, services and luxuries that you and I take for granted every day. The only way you will get people to conserve is to artificially inflate prices. If a corporation did that it would be called "price gouging".

As for the oil industry, they wouldn't be actively trying to stop innovation in the field of automotive transportation. If each individual person had a car that got 100MPG or more that means people would have more money to spend to buy the food they eat, the clothes they wear, the fuel to heat their homes, the fuel to build their homes, in fact there would be more fuel the auto makers to build more fuel efficient cars. The reason why gas prices are so high is because it is getting increasingly difficult to find oil. When it is difficult to find oil it takes more time and ENERGY to pump the oil out of the ground, energy to transport the oil, energy to refine the oil into petroleum, the energy to transport that oil to the pump. That's not all, you also need to pay the gas station attendant who spends his time and energy managing the pump station.

Auto makers are not evil incarnate, and neither is the oil industry. People just need to explain away all the ills of their lives. Some people say "Industry, BAD BAD BAD." or they say "Corporations, BAD BAD BAD." They rant and rave not understanding half the things they say, like the protesters in Battle for Seattle.

They are like Christians chanting, moving and acting in unison, marching against their symbol for evil incarnate. For Christians this symbol is Satan, for the protesters it is the WTO. These people like to rant and rave affirming their preconceived notions of how the world works, and making predictions of the End Times. For Christians the End Times are Armageddon, the day of judgment, where all men will be eternally judged for their action. For people like you BSB, that End Time is The End of Suburbia, where a complex capitalistic society can no longer sustain itself and everyone will be judged for their vile consumption.

I bet you did not even research the X prize organization, and all the innovations that have been spurred partially because of them. All I have to say is, COOL IT. There are smart people working on these things.

and I dissected it thoroughly. I would counter, however, that he didn't read mine and nor did he do anything other than repeat his usual assertions. I apologise for making the assumptions re euthenasia and the death penalty though.
