Will Comcast Cable Greenlight New Episodes Of JERICHO??

Published at:  Apr 08, 2008 10:33:52 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

From a Monday New York Times story on the DirecTV deal that’s allowing NBC bring back “Friday Night Lights”:

CBS Paramount Network Television has held talks with Comcast, the cable provider, about finding new life for “Jericho,” the low-rated drama canceled by CBS last month, according to two people briefed on the talks who requested anonymity.

The proposed CBS/Comcast deal may follow the model employed by NBC and DirecTV for "Friday Night Lights," which allows DirecTV to satcast new episodes of FNL on its 101 channel beginning in October. NBC then repeats the episodes early next year.

Read all of the Times’ story on the matter here.

I love how the argument so many use to say that Jericho shouldn't survive is because there are so many superior shows getting canceled and deserve to be saved instead.

If that's the case, why doesn't anyone (Other than 8 people on this site) give a shit and put forth any effort to save those other shows? Don't hate on Jericho fans cause they actually achieved something with a revival campaign. If those other shows were so absolutely grand, more people would have actually cared enough to save them.

P.S. They did try to bring back Firefly, in that monumental failure of a movie, Serenity.

When it is so obvious that the Cheyenne government comprises of super right-wing neocons. The politics in the overall storyline of Jericho, and the politics of the avid fans of this show, has always confounded me. Personally, I think Jericho is more to the left politically than 24.

I think a better argument for Jericho staying cancelled is the fact that nobody watched it the first time, nor the second time.

Shows don't get cancelled if they're watched. Everything from Quarterlife to Firefly was cancelled because the ratings were horrid, and any studio that wants to run charity cases will find themselves out of business quickly. Just hope it can live on in direct-to-dvd crap and move on. Comcast isn't going to pick up a show that nobody watched to begin with.

    by series7

Just don't try to get some life on the DTV circuit? It just shows how out for money people are. Knock Firefly all you want, at least Weadon pushed to keep it alive (he just screwed up by spending too much time with advance previews that by the time it came out probably half the people that wanted to see it had already seen it there fore losing that opening weekend number that would've gotten him a sequel). But seriously, why can't creators just make some DTV spinoffs? I mean fucking just cast new people if the old ones don't want to return and fucking get a close to your series. Either way its better then nothing.

"Shows don't get cancelled if they're watched."

All things being equal, that might be true. However, when studios work very hard to prevent folks from watching, it's a different ball game. My own gut feeling is that often times, when someone high up in the studio doesn't like a particular show, they do all they can to prevent that show from achieving solid ratings by continually pre-empting, moving time slots or air dates, so that no one knows when the show actually airs. Even if the show is solidly written and acted, when people don't know when or where to tune in, they simply find something else to watch. The Network can then claim "no one watches it", and cancel the show. A lot of great shows have been canceled throughout the years under the pretense of "bad ratings", when it was the "mystery time slot" that actually did them in.

Compounding this is the Network's antiquated ratings system that does not take into account Tivo and DVR users, on-line viewers or DVD sales. The fact that Jericho has such a large and active fan base aught to tell you that yes, people did want to watch this show, despite what you or the Networks claim.

but I agree that if any show deserves to be brought back, why not V Mars, Journeyman, Firefly, Boomtown, Freaks and Geeks, AD, Wonderfalls... the list could go on and on. the worst part about shows getting resurrected is that the idiots who watch them think that every show could be brought back and you hear shit like "the network is so stupid!" or "the network didn't even give it a chance!" or "why don't they make the show on another network?". i really can't wrap my head around all the "fan campaigns" to keep shows alive. for every single show that gets canned. i love tv, i watch every new pilot, network and cable, but i've come to accept that shows, even ones i enjoy, get cancelled. this whole Jericho revival was kinda exciting at first, but now i really don't get why they're trying again. it makes no sense. NONE. i could list a few dozen shows, including ones i've already listed, that deserve to live before Jericho would even cross my mind.

This is not a knock on the show as I actually did watch it (while apparently a bunch of you bastards who petitioned for its return didn't) but does an episode of Jericho really cost that much?

I watch the show because I find it's cheap production values and pulp-like story charming. I can't see where the money's going because, really, the show looks like ass aside from one or two moments (jet fight at end of season 2).

So explain to me, how can this show be considered a big production when it's so cheap looking?

THIS IS WHY THE RATINGS SYSTEM SUCKS!

    by charles darko

In this day and age with the technology available to us, the networks should realize the neilson ratings system just doesn't work anymore. They are right further up in saying Jericho was one of the most watched shows when online views and dvr are taken into account. the ratings system does not count these things there for it looks like no one is watching whne in fact many are watching. Tv is being revolutionised by the way we can view it, the ratings system needs to follow suit. Sending nuts was not the only way Jericho was originally renewed, they also took a look at those other numbers when making their decision. Why they did not do this for season two, I don't know. But people did watch. maybe not on the day it aired or on cbs but they did watch. Online hits to steams of ep's and dvr totals prove that. I say bring it back any way you can, and to the ratings people. Get with the program, it's 2008 for pete's sake!

    Calculating ratings

    by mbeemer

"They are right further up in saying Jericho was one of the most watched shows when online views and dvr are taken into account. the ratings system does not count these things there for it looks like no one is watching whne in fact many are watching."
A case could be made why those "don't count" because it doesn't actually matter how many people are watching THE SHOW. What matters is how many people are watching THE COMMERCIALS. Because the webcasting forces users to watch commercials those numbers should carry some force. DVR users are forwarding past the commercials so they're 'worthless' in terms of calculating value to advertisers.

    ratings...

    by vadakinx

Online streams and downloads wouldn't make a difference.

The majority of streams and downloads come from fans who tape the episode and remove the commercials....advertising is how the stations make their money and torrents remove those advers, so there is little money to be made.

Now of CBS made Jericho available for free, online with a 20sec advert at the beginning, and no more after that, it's a compromise people could live with, but of course they won't do that. You'd either have to pay to watch the show or it would be full of commercials. So people go to torrents instead.

The fact is, the only shows that get high ratings anymore are the "AAA" shows like Lost and reality shows. Lost gets high ratings because people can't wait to find out what happens, and reality shows get high ratings because of the "live" factor when it comes to voting etc.

Interestingly though, Battlestar Galactica is a "AAA" show that doesn't get high ratings though that tends to be down to Sci-Fi's airdate policy.

Which brings up a related point...in an age of the internet and video games, coupled with long work hours and family life, people jut don't have the time to sit down and watch every show on TV.

I also think that people are getting sick of the US commercial system, where you have an ad break every 9 minutes or so. When you write a tv show for US television, you're working towards ad breaks, making it harder to tell interesting stories when you have to break every few minutes.

Doctor Who is cut by Sci-Fi because it doesn't fit into the advert structure. TV in the US isn't shows with commercials in between, it's commercials with shows in between.

It's a busy world, and people don't what to watch 20 minutes worth of commercials in every hour...so they watch the show when they can, downloaded from torrents, with ad breaks cut out, in which case the studios don't make any money from torrents and even if it's popular on a torrent, if it's not making them any money, they cancel it.

Jericho may be huge on torrents, but it doesn't matter because the studio won't benefit from advertising, and if the tv ratings are low enough, the show gets cancelled.

    CBS stinks

    by redscab

CBS the old fogie network that no one watches. What will they replace jericho with another CSI. This show had a following and is better that half the shows on this stupid network. Outside of NFL and NCAA basketball, and maybe 60 minutes the rest of CBS programming is crap. Not to say that the other networks are any better. All the good shows are on showtime, hbo, scifi and other non-network channels.

I wish there was a company back in 1989/1990 that would have ponied up the bucks to give David Lynch the money to produce a season three for Twin Peaks...

    Arrested Development

    by shoe1985

sorry to say it, but the show wasn't that good. I watched a few episodes on Hulu.com, it is legal, and I don't get the hype. We have an incest angle going on, which is a big turnoff right there. It isn't that funny. But every show does have a following, no matter how big or small. Jericho fans like the show, oh well. Who cares? Does it affect you? No because there are many other shows out there you could watch. Also, those shows that you like are all on different networks. This was on CBS.

So I, for one, can let it go. But I can see why Comcast wants it, as I'm sure it was very popular OnDemand...

    by pizza the hut

You know... The show you unceremoniously canned in 1985 without a proper ending to the Banner/McGee story, only to have it return six years later in a batch of very lame NBC reunion movies that never did it justice?

    by darth_inedible

Yea, once we can download any tv show in 20 seconds there will be no way for the nets to make money off of advertising. The internet service providers will end up having to pay the nets for content for their customers to download.

    by theoneofblood

It's time we got to see what an all-out nuclear exchange would really be like with a decadent HBO budget. I want to see retarded children and nations reverting to the middle ages! More skin sloughing off bones and total civil collapse please. People need to realise just how fucked they'd be.

Yes, white trash at its finest. And you don't see why the show couldn't keep people watching. The viewers dropped each year. We got the show, we just didn't like it.

I didn't watch Journeyman, well I watched an episode, but I thought it was dull. But hey, we all like different things. Too bad they all get cancelled one day.

    The future of online advertising

    by proton45

I know the future of online advertising, and we will see it soon in our downloaded tv shows... soon those annoying little messages you see at the bottom of the tv screen during your favorite show will advertise MORE then the next big network TV show... soon that little on-screen tag will flash corporate product logo's... Just wait and see if I'm not right!

    by big jim

but how many were there really? A few thousand? It seems like a lot when you are getting packages of nuts, but ratingswise a few thousand people is peanuts.I like how the series ended. They did a decent job with the limited time they had to wrap up the series. I wonder what was the cliffhanger alternate ending? Would it have ended with Jake on the plane about to be shot down? Guess I'll have to check out the DVD to find out.
