Avi Arad's ROBOSAPIEN Movie Powers Up!!

Published at:  Apr 08, 2008 8:40:04 AM CDT

Merrick here...

We heard a while back that Avi Arad was going to be basing a movie around Wow Wee's very cool RoboSapien line.

This was one of those "ignore it and maybe it'll go away" news bits that come around...quite frequently now that I think about it.

Well, this one didn't go away. In fact, it's either getting ready to roll, or is already rolling. Senn McNamara, who directed BRATZ, is directing the project. In a trillion years, I never could've envisioned the phrase "From the director of BRATZ!"). Arad and Max Botkin will script.

Bobby Coleman will play a boy who befriends a robot on the run from malevolent corporate interests in "Robosapien: Rebooted," which has begun filming in New Orleans.

...says THIS ARTICLE in Hollywood Reporter.

We have a RoboSapien. It's scares the crap out of neighborhood cats...I recommend it highly.

More "malevolent corporate interests" ... ugh ...

by the wolf at the door

Right, I'm sure this movie's really going to stick it to them. What, does the robot stand in the way of their massive tax cuts? Does Robosapien put the screws to the fat cats by exposing their labor rights abuses or the way they stifle competition? Maybe the robot gets sick, and the corporation won't pay for his medical bills despite his health care plan ...

Maybe it's a chilling expose of the redistribution of wealth over the past two decades that has seen corporate profits (and CEO salaries) skyrocket while the middle class American paycheck stagnates and suffers the blows of a falling dollar.

I find few things so cynical in Hollywood than the cliche of the "malevolent corporate interests," brought to you buy those corporate interests in a two-hour long commercial for their products. "Oh, will this edgy, hip new toy show those suits what's what? Now you can play 'stick it to the man' at home, kids, with this BRAND NEW SUPER COOL FUN ROBOSABIEN DOLL!!!"

I don't know which is more shocking, somebody actually thinks those things are cool, or the fact that someone thought those toys would make good movie fodder. What's next, Michael Bay's Tamagotchi starring Shia Lebouf?

of this movie concept. say it's derivative of Short Circuit, say it's antiquated and completely unappealing. I say I'm just glad SOMEONE's shooting in New Orleans and giving it a piece of that action that LA and New York and Vancouver take up most of the time. Go Robosapien! Or Johnny Five...
