Published at:  Apr 08, 2008 1:33:18 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Bobby Cannavale (“Third Watch,” “Happy Endings,” “Snakes on a Plane”) will play the title role in the pilot for ABC’s proposed remake of “Cupid.”

The project is based on the 1998 ABC hourlong romantic comedy created by Rob Thomas (“Veronica Mars”) about a guy who believes he’s the god of love and the pretty therapist assigned to treat him. The pilot for the remake is also created and overseen by Thomas.

Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) played the title character in the original, Paula Marshall (“Nip/Tuck”) the therapist.

ABC will announce whether or not “Cupid” makes it to series in May.

    Does anyone remember...

    by troutmaskreplicant

...Bobby Cannavale's appearance in Oz? It was quite peculiar. He was like a lost gay supervillain from the old Batman tv show. Dear old Oz, it jumped more sharks than a meth-head gymnast at an aquarium...

    Good choice, really.

    by prof. pop-cult

Do a Google image search on the guy. He looks like he could be related to Piven, though on the Italian side of the family.

I saw Piven speak in support of Obama last week.

    by kid idioteque

He had nothing worthwhile to say (shock!), and after saying he'd hang around afterward, he bolted like a bum from a cab. I just went for the entertainment value.

    That's always a good joke

    by napoleon park

to take a performer like Jeremy Piven from "Ellen" or Bobby Cannavale from "Wiil and Grace" and instead of crediting them for the work they're best known for, mention a bunch of obscure stuff no one's ever heard of. I used to do the same thing with the Between The Covers Newsletter when I'd credit Steve Ditko as the creator of "Squirrel Girl" or Howard Chaykin as a former "Micronauts" artist. Ditto for not mentioning that Rob Thomas was the lead singer for Matchbox 20.

    An odd choice

    by don lockwood

It seems like an odd choice to me. He's not "everyman" enough. He's too good-looking. Of course, they could be playing with the premise and the way it's played. He's a fine actor, really, just seems a bit against type if the show stays true to its origins.

Fantastic actor, not seen on screen enough.

    by bungion boy

I've been a Cannavale fan since The Station Agent. He was so wonderful in that film and I thought robbed of an Oscar nod. Since then he just hasn't done as much in film and tv that shows what a truly talented actor he is. I've seen him give magnificent performances on stage in New York in plays like "Hurlyburly" and "Mauritius." I loved the original show Cupid, and I certainly hope this is just as good. So far, I approve of the direction they're going in.

    by kid z

...not excited about this at all. The idea worked in the 90's, but in today's world... not so much. Also, people who loved the original won't like it with a whole new cast. Dumb idea, ABC.

    Umm...Napolean Park

    by mullymt

I do hope that you're joking. "Jeremy Piven from 'Ellen'?" Really?? Entourage is obscure? And Bobby Cannivale, who has starred in a number of indie movies, and had regular roles in several network TV shows, is best known for his guest appearances on a over-the-hill sitcom? And please tell me the Rob Thomas thing was a joke.

    Won't be

    by series7

As good as the original. I wonder who they are going to have play Piven in PCU since he is famous now lets just go back and remake all of his underappreciated early work. I still think David Spade could reprise his role, we know Andy Milonakis will be Gutter. I bet Piven gets a much bigger role in Old School 2 now as well.

the Rob Thomas thing was a joke.

    by napoleon park

and you're very astute. As for the Ellen and Will & Grace references, not everyone has HBO or watches small indy films, so, yes, a lot of the mainstream public know Piven and Cannavale best from their work on hit sit-coms.Piven? No, the real God of Love is Ron Jeremy. Why does everyone at AICn who disagrees with me or doesn't get a joke also do the same clever gag of misspelling my user name? If anything, I'm Napofat, not Napo-lean.See, I have no idea who or what "mullymt" is or was, but it's not that hard to look at the way you have it spelled and spell it that way.

To those who doubt this new version...

    by prof. pop-cult

I think Thomas could make this work. But I think to do so, the new show should indirectly acknowledge the events that happened in the original series. Thomas should do what Joss Whedon did with Buffy the series vs. the original Buffy movie. For example, we know that the new Cupid series will be set in Los Angeles. Thomas could establish that Claire had a practice in Chicago several years back. In the pilot, Trevor would show up, and the viewers who had never heard of the original series would learn the backstory of their history together. Yes, the ages of the actors would still be about the same as those from the original show, so the characters would not have aged over the span of ten years. But they can keep the amount of time that has passed ambiguous. I really hope this is the direction is going with the pilot -- making it an indirect sequel with a loose continuity to the events of the original series, instead of trying to reboot the whole thing outright.

    Can't begrudge Cannavale a job.

    by annoyyou

Because there are so few Latino actors headlining TV shows these days (and yeah, his last name is Italian but the guy totally identifies as Cuban) - but does anyone think his take on this role will be appreciably different than his character in "The Station Agent?" Um, no. I don't object to Cannavale at all -- it's the resurrection of this show which gives me pause. I'm waiting for the moment five years from now when Thomas gets the "bright idea" to revive "Veronica Mars" (the other one of his two show ideas).

They should have cast Anthony Clark.

A role like this calls for his brand of burly masculinity.
