Writer-director Darren Aronofsky (“Pi,” “Requiem for a Dream,” “The Fountain”) is developing a new drama for AMC, home of “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad.”

John J. McLaughlin, who wrote “Man of House” (in which grizzled Texas Ranger Tommy Lee Jones babysat the University of Texas cheerleading squad), is drafting a teleplay for the pilot.

According to Tuesday morning’s Hollywood Reporter:

    I'm intrigued

Like Aronofsky, like paranormal stories... it's TV so it could always be crap but I'll give it a chance where as I'm happy to immediately scratch off about 95% of the new shows that come out. Too bad Aronofsky never directed that episode of Lost.

An hour of a bunch of imbeciles wandering around a house before coming to the conclusion - time and time again - that the plumbing sucks... Nonstop terror...

I couple of things that really irritate me about the show... they have to make every episode for people who haven't seen it before (how many times do we have to hear explanations about EVPs and EMFs?). And there are clearly staged aspects of the show which reduces the credibility of the entire thing, which given my genuine interest in the paranormal really bothers me. Example: Hot chick intern goes into a lighthouse ALONE. They repeatedly mention, over and over, that she's going in alone. Only problem is, we're watching her. So there's a camera man with a big ass camera right on her ass. Now someone in that situation is not going to feel alone, they are specifically saying they want her going in alone "to draw out the spirits" or some such hokum, but anyone who gives it a moment's thought knows she's obviously not alone. Love the paranormal, hate reality TV. Too much reality TV in ghost hunters.

    A question for you guys---

    by dataset

Everyone, myself included, likes Aronofsky's movies. We watch them in the theater and own them on DVD. But how many of you actually REWATCH them more than once. It's like my DVD's of good movies like The Others, Adaptation, Memento, etc. I buy them remembering what good films they were but I'm never in the right mood to watch them. Aronofsky is one director that sits on my shelf gathering dust. And I really like his movies when I see them. My question is, is there such a thing as a "great" director of movies that don't draw you back for a repeat viewing?

God I hate the state of cable tv nowadays.

    by shermdawg

AMC should not have any shows what-so-ever UNLESS it's retrospectives on classic movies. But then again, they don't play those anymore, so that'd be pointless. Remember when cable nets had an actual identity not just a smorgasboard of shit, or veer so far off course their title no longer applies?

    The Fountain is awesome

    by sir loin

Definitely worth repeated viewings, there are always little details that get noticed, such as the 3-pronged shaped stamped into the tip of Tommy's pen which also appears during the conquistador sequences...finally caught that :)

Honestly, both Breaking Bad and Mad Men are incredible shows. I hope they get like a stable of 5 terrific shows and just become untouchable.

I agree with the last part of that. Great networks have been destroyed. The first that come to mind, me being a bit of a geek, is MSNBC and TechTV. MSNBC went frome diverse programming with a lean on TECH into full time coverage of the Death of Princess DI... and never went back. They didn't transition, hint at the changes, or announce the change. They just started covering her death 24/7 and cancelled everything tech-related. Then Tech-TV, don't even get me started. They ruined Tech-TV by merging with G4, then ruined G4 by becoming Spike2! What a mess. There are other examples.

HOWEVER! Breaking Bad is just so damned good, I have to forgive AMC and encourage more programming along those lines if they can keep the level of quality going.

Agreed, AMC should change their name.

    by worthless

AMC's name stopped applying the first time they played "Pinata: Survival Island". How exactly is a cheap, crappy, horror movie that no one has ever seen an "American Classic"?

That being said, "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" are both great, so I'm looking forward to this new show.

I don't give a fuck about the programming.

    by nice marmot

Breaking Bad and Mad Men are good enough that they can give AMC a new title. My love for Aranofsky and the paranormal have my fingers crossed for a 3rd great original series on AMC. And Dataset, I rewatch The Fountain quite a bit. Love to show it to people that never heard of it. However, as much as I like Pi & Requiem, there are only so many times I feel like reliving the tension and squirming around in my seat. They're both on my shelf, but I'm RARELY in the mood to rewatch.

...more "innertaymunt" for the "great unwashed". Really, this is the single stupidest f***in' show on TV, followed closely by UFO Hunters and Monster Quest.

Does Aranofsky mean Herc will cover this when it airs?

    by inwosuxred

Whendon shows that haven't even started filming get more talkbacks every week than Breaking Bad got during the entire season. AMC has been kicking ass with original programming, hopefully this will be a continuation of that success.

MSNBC can't even be counted on for round the clock coverage of stupid news stories. Half the time they are a news channel and half the time they play documentaries about life in prison, especially on the weekends. Wrestling on sci-fi? Reality shows on every music channel? I generally forgive AMC since I didn't watch it much when it was classic movies and their programming is actually good.

...Aronofsky was supposed to do the new Batman movies? i remember watching requiem for the first time thinking, "this dude's doing Batman! awesome!" i wonder how his would have held up to Nolan's.

..is so much more entertaining than GH. They have better cases, they always use Chip Coffey who f'n rules, they don't try their damndest to debunk the shit (I want to be a believer, not a skeptic...let me decide). Not to mention, I'm in love with Heather, their documentarian.

What I don't understand is. Why channels like FX and AMC who have these amazing show. Just show CRAP inbetween them? Same with Comedy Central. Just god awful crap surronding like maybe 10 good shows combined. I'd almost rather those channels just not be on air unless they are showing there good shows.

up in canada you need a satallite dish and and extra 20 bucks a month to get AMC, and i only have digital cable, so i haven't seen either MM or BB (well, i've seen the MM pilot and loved it- waiting for dvd for the rest), but AMC seems to have the goods.

As far as classics, AMC has been a joke

    by skimn

for some time..."Catwoman" and such..but they did premiere Letters From Iwo Jima, they run Hitchcock specials, original Planet Of The Apes this past Friday...so TCM may have them beat, but moviewise they do okay from time to time. And as far as pure movies, TCM is pretty hard to beat.

    by bouncy x

we just have digital cable and AMC was added to the lineup last fall. i barely watch though because their movies are edited and there are commercials. i always thought this was a commercial free network. but yeah, canada gets it now...no need of a "amc watching position" .
