THE SPIRIT is coming in under 13 days... is it the first trailer? I certainly hope so!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... thanks for all the well wishes - but frankly doing AICN is what has gotten me through the hardest of times - I love it. I love sharing fun stuff with all of you. Not too long ago I got sent THE SPIRIT widget on FACEBOOK - so I've decided to share it with all of you. It's counting down and telling us that THE SPIRIT IS ON THE WAY... and if that means trailer... I'm so fucking ready. Here ya go...

I already saw Sin City. It was God awful. The Sirit, in its comic form, is nothing like Sin City. Not visually, not tonally. How could anyone be "so fucking ready" for this?

Frank Miller did get a directing credit with Sin City, but I don't know how much he actually did. Not a HUGE Sin City fan (comic or film), but I remember it was one of the most entertaining films to come out that year. But other than the crime noir tone, The Spirit has little in common with that book. I'm trying my best to be open to this one despite the visual and tonal similarities.

This is old news. Lionsgate announced already that it will debut the teaser at the NY Comic Con on April 19th.We will get the teaser shortly thereafter.

are you telling me Dick tracy is considered a bad movie on AICN. I always thought it was universally considered good. I have'nt seen it in a while though. Maybe it is terrible.

the printing styles of anicent old-world comic books demanded an artist use blue-for-black, and that Eisner wanted him black all along. Horseshit. Spirit is blue. Frank Miller sucks, and his "Spirit" looks like THE SHADOW taking five in West Hollywood.

how a teaser is something to get that excited over? Oh boy, just a few more days until we get to see a silhouetted figure that is probably the Spirit and a logo with a release date. Oh sparkly.

Most things on this site are about anticipating anticipation. It's like waiting for Christmas Eve and not the day itself. And the art direction on Dick Tracy was very pretty. Just as visually faithful to the source material as Sin City. I wouldn't say it's one of my favorite movies, but it's certainly not terrible.

So Superman's hair is blue, right? No, it's black. Blue was normally used to represent black. It just got misinterpreted after a while. Here's a bit of trivia: Go back to the first few appearances of Spider-Man... his suit, although highlighted in blue, was obviously supposed to be red and black.

I'm with you man -- I get it -- Spidey was supposed to be black and red, and over time he became known as blue and red. Batman should have been black and grey. Groovy. Maybe, just maybe, Eisner wished to hell -- every day of his entire life -- that The Spirit could have been jet black, with a really loud red tie... but that fucking printing scheme kept him from it. Who cares. Miller's Spirit looks crap, Miller's Spirit Shoes and Spirit Super Coat look like shit, and his Spirit Hairdo is a little lesbian butch. Go read Darwyn Cooke's excellent 2007 12-issue run of The Spirit for some awesome, BLUE, non-Sin City Spirit. All Frank's movie has going for it: Smoking Hot Chicks.

nobody ever wore a blue fedora...maybe a blue suit, but not a blue fedora....check out batman comics from the silver age, with batman in blue cape and cowl and robin with blue tint to his hair...miller had a long relationship with eisner, do you really think he wants to fuck him over?

There was a big discussion on newsarama.com about whether Eisner intended The Spirit to be blue or black. I do know that in the four color days, blue was used for black, but no one could come up with a direct reference to Spirit ever being black. I've heard both, but no one's made an effort to make his suit black recently and I'd figure Will would have said something before he died...

Gwai, nice comments on the original Sin City. It was so unique when it came out, and indeed, there were titties ;) My ultimate comment on the original's popularity to you and I during the 90s is that we were probably insiders. The market was inundated with crap then, and Sin City was pretty apparent to us comic fans, but I think it would have fallen below the radar of the regular public, though I do think it probably became a bit of an underground phenomenon between the 12 or so years since it was first published and when the movie hit. Still, I remember Frank being a nobody to my art house buddies where "comics" was a dirty word and not to be taken seriously - and then suddenly it becoming a noble tradition of graphic media after Sin City hit at the theatres. (Stuck up posers, if you ask me. I do have a chip on my shoulder about that.) ***And on The Pro, you're totally right. I forgot it was Ellis's and not Frank's. I do that a lot in regards to The Pro.

Is there anything in reference to him wearing black? That's a question that's been in the back of my mind for years. I've wondered that maybe he was originally intended to wear a black suit and over time, was just universally accepted as wearing blue so Will never cared to clarify. Sort of like Batman and his blue and grey vs. black and grey - those colors are pretty much interchangeable to fans, regardless of what was intended.

Sounds like more Lucasian post-success revisionist historianism to me. I'll give 'er a shot, but any movie that's ever been done with Miller's name on it has done so with the inclusion of lots of talent on both sides of the camera, and did so despite of Miller, not because. And hey, Eisner always really wanted the Octopus to shoot first.

It all depends on the context, the background, the story. But the dames are all mighty fine, specially the latinas, the Spirit looks good if too black, the Octopus looks wacky. Some of the suits and hats are spot-on.

He got into nerdy fan obsessed mode, thinking is hero was as talented as in 1986. Miller have become a lazy drugged up alcoholic, you only have to see the evolution of his drawing and writing from Sin City 1 to the last, to see he lives on past glories. The Spirit will suck arse.

It's actually more advantageous for him to wear midnight blue instead of black, as black shows up readily under night vision goggles (also, shadows at night aren't pure black as everything reflects dark blue from the sky, though only in the country -- sodium vapor lights in the city would make Batman appear orange or green depending on whether he had on black or blue, and the night sky in cities can be red from the lights reflecting off the clouds). The attire in various Japanese martial arts is often dark blue.Grey is also good, as it is prevalent in cities, and is utilized in urban camouflage.I always wondered if the yellow belt was meant to be brown though; yet burnished gold does make it easier to find one's gear in the dark. I've seen luggage with metallic cloth inside that works similarly.

I mean I know this is the AICN talkback, and everything must apparently suck, but Frank Miller's a damn genius of a writer/artist. Granted his version of Batman going on right now is pretty shitty, but I think his run on Daredevil, Sin City, and The Dark Knight Returns (fuck abbreviations), are damn near classic. 300 the graphic novel wasn't half bad either.
His movie adapations (his own, and other people's versions) are highly stylized, but I'd much rather see a comic book brought to life proper than a comic book made to look 'real'. That being said I'm looking forward to The Spirit. I dig that pulp noir style ala The Shadow or yes, even Dick Tracy..if only for Pacino's over the top performance. -
I think Bill Finger suggested to Bob Kane to make Batman's outfit black and grey because it looked cooler than the orange winged jump suit Bob initially designed for his bat character. Of course, Bill Finger was a contemporary of Masaaki Hatsumi, and had also spent some time with the Thugees before the war, so maybe the yellow belt was a thought in the direction of dealing with working in the shadows of a 1930s NYC ;) Pardon my humor on that one, I couldn't resist mate. ***With the old four color method, do you think the same transition that seemed to happen to Batman occurred with The Spirit? I know Batman was originally intended to have black on the outside, but as time went by, the highlights overcame the black and now Batman can work with a blue and grey suit just as well as a black and grey one. (Personal preference asides.) I've never seen a Spirit image with most of the suit being dark with blue highlights though. I know it could have just been bad art and lack of shading. I don't know if I'll ever be satisfied on Will's original intent for the color of The Spirit's suit...

Woah, wasn't expecting to see my name in this talkback when I hadn't said anything yet. You are right of course, and the damn posers will never understand. On the topic of Robert Rodriguez, I respect him a lot more for his methods than his films. I do feel his auteur label is a bit undeserved. But you can't deny that he went about creating his career in a very impressive way, whether it was making El Mariachi for seven grand or creating a fully functional studio in his garage. I think it's cool that he makes movies for (and by) his kids, but it doesn't get any lamer than Shark Boy and Lava Girl. I quite like Sin City, Desperado and Planet Terror are pretty good too, but the rest of his ouevre ranges from mediocre to ca-ca. I would give From Dusk Till Dawn a pass, but Tarantino's parts are the watchable parts, and after Salma Hayek's dance it descends into crappiness.

there's no evidence of a single swastika or nipple pastie in any of the behind stills i've scene, thank whoever i gotta thank for that... i got faith in miller on this, it looks like it could very fun, an anachronistic noir superhero epic with a light goofy touch, i dont think he could live with himself if he ends up shaming eisner, the spiritual father of us(comic creators) all.

Yeah, I don't believe there is mostly black Spirit; I suppose we have to take on faith that Miller got the straight dope from the horses mouth, though I'll have to find that debate on Newsarama.

I liked being able to only watch the Hard Goodbye and the Big, Fat Kill by themselves. Worked much better for me. I like Frank Miller, but wasn't he invloved in Robocop 3? That was a big fucking turd.

The Sin City vibe is not very appeling for The Spirit.
Altough, Paz Vega is insanally hot, so I'm confused. -
Because he's an over-rated hack. A One Trick Pony. Grim & Gritty is all he can do. yes, his current run on Batman is garbage, just as much of his other output. Sin City was NOT genius, it was a lame attempt at doing a "hard boiled" noir type story, but was so thick with cheap cliched dialogue, it crossed over into comedy more often than not, simply from being SO bad. Miller's attempt at writing pulp detective graphic fiction was an embarrassment. It read like a 14 year old's attempt. Anyone who's read any real, classic crime fiction will see the difference, and recognize Sin City for the shallow crap it truly is. If you go back and read The Dark Knight Returns with a critical eye, not with fanboy zeal, you'll see the bad writing there too. Miller's failure is that he seems to realize that he cannot write believeable characters, so each time he falls back to making them angry, violent psychopaths, hero / villian, doesn't matter. He has only one bag of tricks and he's been scrounging at the bottom for some time now. And look at the horrible influence he's had on comics, everyone had to make their books "grim, dark" to compete. On occasion, real writing would emerge from the sludge, a Kingdom Come, Marvels, but so often it's just some creative-writing graduate dragging out the same story ( hero finds his mentor is evil, mentor kills hero's wife, hero goes beserk for revenge) with different colored tights.

In my opinion, not every artist out there needs to be a multi genre, platform talent. Take for instance, the band Metallica. They are known for hard hitting rock. That's who they are, that's what they do. I for one wouldn't want to hear a pop or disco album from them. That's not what they do. Frank Miller writes grim and gritty stuff. I would argue that his run on Daredevil isn't so much grim and gritty as it is just great, but overall that's his schtick. Some artists have their one little niche, and stick to it. I know I wouldn't want to see a romantic comedy from Quentin Tarantino, or a balls to the wall action flick from Woody Allen. I could go on like this for a while, but you get the picture. Some people do one thing (in my opinion, very well) and they just run with it. Is there something wrong with that?
