First Behind The Scenes Video of the WATCHMEN!!!

Published at:  Apr 06, 2008 12:22:34 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here - after a bad week - this and the Cloverfield dvd are the two things that have really brought my spirits up. And my Neca dancing Slimer... but that's neither here nor there. This behind the scenes gives you a sense of what Moriarty saw up on his set visit that got him ejaculating exclamation marks in his report. Mirko has this first Video Blog Thingamabob - and it is Aces! Check it out!

ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! has launched the first video journal for "Watchmen." You can find it in both Flash and HD QuickTime at either link below:

that the production designer states that its important to establish a world that is real, just as a car drives toward a giant green screen. This does remind me a bit of the behind the scenes set building of Blade Runner, but retro past, instead of refitted future.

He hasn't failed me yet. DotD and 300 were very impressive. He's obviously put a lot of care into the planning of The Watchmen. How can you argue with the character pics and this behind-the-scenes footage? Can't wait to see what this guy's going to be doing in ten years.

    by creasybear

far they have to go for a few minutes of actual movie footage of a street or jail. The pricetags for set-work like that has to be staggering. Reminds me of the 30 Days of Night DVD bts featurette showing how the whole Alaskan town was built. Twice. But then I'll see spy shots of moviemakers actually shooting on-location, and with the headaches of uncontrolled people wandering around, city-imposed time limits, etc., it seems like filmmakers are screwed either way. Reminds me what a huge gamble big-budget movies are.

    Conundrum

    by mr. lahey

Here's the thing: I know Watchmen is regarded as a classic, but I've never read it. Should I check it out before the movie, or go into the movie not knowing diddly? I picked up Sin City when it was first collected into a graphic novel in the early 90s, so I was only aware of the Marv section of the movie. I had never read 300 before seeing the movie, so I had no expectations. I ended up seeing that 3 times in the theater and picking up the HDDVD. So, should I read the graphic novel or put my faith into the director of this movie?

I have never been so excited for a movie in my whole life. I just hope it maintains that cerebral flair as well as the visceral. by packymccracken

I'd say read it first. The quality of Watchmen as a comic book goes much deeper than just the story. It's also about the way the story is told panel to panel that make it such a landmark book. I have high hopes for the movie and have only been slightly let down by the costumes for Night Owl and Ozy (I'm tired of the muscled armor look). Do yourself a favor and read it. It's worth the time and you will (hopefully) get a better understanding of why it gets such high praise.

I'd definitely read the book. It's just so damn good. I read an average of about three books every two months and Watchmen was honestly one of the best books I've read in the past couple of years. You might feel like a geek at first because it's a damn comic book about wannabe super hero's but in a week you'll be joking with your girlfriend about how you want to quit your job and become a masked adventurer like I did. Seriously, read the book. I can't wait for the film, I really can't, but I'm glad I had the opportunity to enjoy the book first before I knew what was going to happen after watching an adaption on the big screen.

    by zerocorpse

Do NOT go into the book with the imagery and flavor of the movie on your mind. It's MUCH better to let the book tell you the story, and then let the movie give you a different interpretation of it.
If you see the movie first, I fear it will taint the book.

Closest thing I have to a quibble, so far, is-- why wouldn't you go with Gold for Adrien Veidt's outfit? Considering how much they've released (and realizing that you HAVE to cut/condense the story) I'm stunned. I figured Hollis would just be dropped, but they're building his place-- I thought they might drop Rorshach's jail adventure, but they're building it-- the ending DOES take place at Karnak in Antarctica-- the comics ARE pirate-oriented (I ASSUME that will just be set-reference) As per the ending, you can certainly change the details of the plan without damaging the story so long as the end-effect is the same (it just has to be a REALLY big "joke" that has the same desired effect and results in similar loss of life for the moral ambivalence)

    by oknight

I've tried it both ways on many properies and -- I think-- FAR better to get the distortion of the adaptation first. --Unless you are actually approaching this property as a mystery (its a fairly sucky mystery) and don't want to know who the villians are (good luck)-- The original will always delight with its purer, fuller vision and you'll almost immediately dismiss the adaptation when reading.

    1. Post 9/11 aftermath in Bush's America, no one in their right mind will find the 'A massive threat to the world will unite all it's people' plot of the original GN at all believable. That ending would evoke hails of derisive laughter. I will go so far as to state that Alan Moore would find that notion laughable today.

    Costumes

    by zerocorpse

I always thought the costumes should look a little silly in real life. Part of the point of the book is that these are grown people-- adults who are otherwise somewhat normal-- who dress up in silly costumes and fight crime, and that the public perceived them as "heroic, but just a little pathetic."
So costumes that don't look perfect, or that come off a little tacky, are alright with me. That's where the story should lead-- Without going off into totally funny, stupid parody, of course.

    by troutmaskreplicant

The ending of Watchmen bears a remarkable resemblance to
statements Ronald Reagan made between 1985 and 1987 about humanity uniting against an "external" threat. I don't know if Moore was influenced by Reagan (probably they were both influenced by someone else, like Carl Sagan)...but it gives the ending a historical context.

difference between the ending and 9/11 (spoilers)

    by waggy

The ending in Watchmen gave the world a common enemy and made the Cold War irrelevant because of a greater threat. It wasn't about sympathy, it was about practicality and immediacy. And Dr Manhattan's words at the end show that the situation is far from resolved, just delayed. The ending still works.

    by pariah74

First of all that would only really be laughable if it were set in post 9/11 Bush's America. It isn't.

Second of all I don't recall the plan being successful.

Third of all, changing that ending renders moot most of the book.
The book is more than a cut and dry superhero story. It's got layers upon layers like an onion, or any well written novel. Changing something as fundamental as Ozymandias' plan...nay his entire philosophy would just unravel the whole fabric.

    by martinblank

Someone asked if there was an HDTV in the footage and if so, would they have had that in 1985. If it is one, remember that Dr. Manhattan's arrival pushed technology forward quite a bit from where it was in our 1985. So there wouldn't be much of anything wrong with Edward Blake or Adrian Veidt kicking back to watch a Blu-ray or something.

Americans are so self centered. What, the world is supposed to unite under one common cause because the WTC buildings got attacked? An alien attack is a little bit of a different story, because it represents a specific universal threat. As much as the current climate in America may convince some otherwise, terrorism is not a specific universal threat.

    by le vicious fishus

[story spoilers ahead] I'd ideally like the ending to be precisely the same as in the comics. No alternate ending will be a fraction as horrifying and shocking and thought-provoking as the ending of the WATCHMEN comics. If they go the giant, magnifying glass in the sky, death ray, I'm gonna be right pissed. The ending MUST directly point to a threat from extradimensional, Lovecraftian aliens. Nothing else is terrifying enough for the world to unite.

To me, it's the ultimate point of the story. In the short run, O's plan SEEMS to have worked, but it's VERY obvious that it's all going to fall apart (sooner rather than later if R's missive is actually read--which seems more than likely). We're on the same page.

300 worked as a comic book, but not as a movie. It was 100 minutes of the same screaming, jumping and stabbing, which got pretty old after the first action scene. And you can't even call it "action", because all these timeramps prevented the action from getting interesting. Everytime a Spartan made a step, we saw it in slow motion. That was the whole movie! Spartans fighting in slow motion.
To make it short: The comic worked, the movie was a big, although good looking mess.

I think that watchmen is a bit too much for Snyder. Hes an ok visual filmmaker, but he didn't prove himself in the storytelling department if you ask me.

    by derlanghaarige

...the problem was finding any action in 300! If every punch takes 1 minute till it hits, because everythng is in slow motion, you can't call it action! "D.O.A." got critizised for this a lot, but of it happens in 300 it's cool? Oh, I forgot. IT HAS ELECTROLYTES!

    [Spoilers] the Ending

    by abhimanyu

I got into "Heroes" pretty late and just finished the first season. I can see all the "homages" but how is Watchmen going to do the NY disaster finale after Heroes has already ripped it off, to such popularity at that?

    Book vs Film

    by thunderbolt ross

Whatever you do, don't read the book right before the movie comes out. It's unfair to the film to have the book so fresh in your mind - it'll fall short whether it deserves to or not.

    COOL

    by caltsoudas

Well at least we know the art direction has been handled brilliantly. What's had ME worried from the start is whether the performances will be good or whether the actors will be too cartoony with their roles. Snyder is not exactly an actors' director. I have a feeling the tone of this is going to end up seeming very contrived and cartoony.

You may have just watched Heroes season 1

    by inwosuxred

but everyone else watched it a long time ago and forgot about it. When this gets released, half the hype will be about how it comes from an acclaimed comic book. I don't see anything Heroes did getting in the way of Watchmen. Having a bunch of Hollywood douche bags decide they know how the story should end better than Moore did is the problem this film faces.

After the first character pictures were released

    by elgordo

I read the book again. I saw that I had completely forgotten a large chunk of the story and then I figured that the character pictures were of the superheroes in their younger days. The story goes back and forth in time, when they reigned supreme and then when superheroes were banned. in the picture The Comedian doesn't have the scar that he has later on in the story so that's why I'm hoping they are showing both time periods and those are pictures of them all cool and slender.

It also made me wonder how in the hell they are going to make a single movie out of this. The story is so massive and when they include all the Pirate story as well it's going to be one massive picture.

    by imperialmarchface

are not part of the movie. The pirate storyline worked in the book because, when the guy was reading the pirate comics, each panel would have part pirate story and part actual story, and there was always a link between them. But that's because of words. This is a movie. I just don't see how they'll overlap the pirate thing into the movie without it seeming ridiculous. And The Watchmen is awesome without the pirates. I liked it in the book, but please not the movie.

    by imperialmarchface

this is going to be a long year of waiting. I can't believe Jeffrey Dean Morgan is the dead character. Weirdest thing to get type-cast as. But he should be good. I don't know how Billy Crudup is going to play Dr. Manhattan, that should be interesting. What do you guys think the actual last scene in the movie will be? The newspaper guys and the Roscharch journal reference like in the story, or something else?

...That is what I am worried about. My guy was all about how they were being faithful to the books, but now that it's done, he admitted to me last weekend when I asked about it being character-driven that they 'kind of took it in another direction...' I am ready to be disappointed, but will see it anyway.

    About the pirate story...

    by taintyourwagon

If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure I read here at aicn that the pirate story would show up in the dvd release, like those Lord of the Rings special editions. This works for me, because the first time I read Watchmen I was young and dumb and didn't get why it was in there. But after reading it many times since, it's the best part of the whole story. I just don't think the American idiot movie going public would understand why it's there. Plus, that knocks 10-15 minutes of story out of an already long movie (it's gotta be 3+ hours, right?) So if they save it for a 4 hour dvd SE, they will make sure fanboys like myself will buy that shit like cocaine laced apples. Sorry, been re-reading Transmet, damn it rules.
