I am – Hercules!!

Longtime Coaxial readers know I’m a old fan of Los Angeles’ Paley Fest; I even met my man Harry Knowles for the first time waiting in line at the fest for a “South Park” event.

For a few weeks in March each year the festival honors a handful of shows, typically by screening an episode before having the cast and creators answer questions.

The Paley Media Center has made only a very few of these panels available for purchase on DVD (like the 2006 "Lost" event), but this year it has also assembled online video highlights from no fewer than 12 of the March 2008 events, including the instant-sellout “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” reunion, the Judd Apatow salute, and the nights honoring “Pushing Daisies,” “Chuck,” “Friday Night Lights,” “Dancing With The Stars,” “Gossip Girl,” “Damages,” “Dirty Sexy Money,” “The X-Files” and “Mad Men.”

(Chi McBride of “Daisies,” it turns out, doesn’t need a script to his get laughs.)

Find all of the online highlights here.

Could someone write up a review of that one? If there isn't gratuitous nudity, it's seriously misrepresenting itself with that cover art.

this is why they had "technical difficulties" and couldn't, or let's just go ahead and say wouldn't, make the event available online.

only good part of Pushing Daises... and I, Robot to a lesser extent. Hercules did you really think that he had to have everything written for him? Dude obviously wings it half the time. Any ways my man from Chickasha is in the Fall. Did not realize that in the preview. The chemistry between Mr. OK and Ms. UK is really bland.

obviously. I can't think of a show that flaunts its cleverness LESS than Mad-Men. And your political panties are showing. Mad-Men actually does an admirable job of staying away from judging it characters and situations (like, the show itself would never concede that 'men were sexist pigs' the way you insist it does). It doesn't descend to the political, because it's too concerned with the individual lives of its human characters. Best new show of '07, no contest.

Hey. Awesome episode of Torchwood this week.

    by zerocorpse

Two of the lead characters died- REALLY died- and a major arc was just completed. It was a GREAT season of Torchwood.
Not that you'd know it here on Coax between all the Whedon news tidbits. Apparently an excellent sci fi show putting in the best episodes thus far isn't worthy of talkbacks, but if Whedon says ONE WORD, it's worthy of a headline.
As I noted earlier, Whedon or Buffy are mentioned in 3 out of the 10 current healines on Coax. How about a little fucking balance? There are other shows that are STILL ON and HAVEN'T BEEN CANCELED, and someone here is still so obsessed that they're still yapping about a defunct show and the actors who have indicated they want nothing to do with it anymore.
Give me a fucking break, already. Herc ignored the ENTIRE season of Torchwood, and as I said previously, it was the best work thus far. It kicked ass, actually.
We get it. Someone is a Whedon fan. Whoopee. However, we do NOT need an article about the fucker ever other day at the cost of other shows getting recognition.

    Ok, sell me.

    by mentatduke.com

Why should I start watching Torchwood?
Favorites: Alias Seas 1 & 2, Angel Seas 5, Farscape, Firefly, etc.

Do I need to have watched the new Dr. Who to get the most out of it? I hear it's a spinoff.

    It is a spin-off...

    by zerocorpse

    But it stands alone. It's basically a U.K. X-Files, but with a lot more time travel/dimensional travel/aliens.
The first season had trouble finding its legs. This season, however, had some excellent character development and some truly clever episodes.
One of the early episode of this season, "Sleeper", was about a woman who was a part of a "sleeper cell" of aliens who had planned an attack on Earth. The story was very well done. She was not aware of who she was, and was terrified of it when it was discovered. I can't do it justice in a talkback. It's worth a look, though.
This season also had one of the Buffy alumni as a recurring character. He was pretty cool, and this last episode really worked for him.
I'd recommend renting Season One, and if you don't hate it, give Season Two a try. As Buffy fans keep telling me, don't use Season One as an indicator of the show's quality. The second season is where it really took off.
I don't like Buffy. I absolutely despise the way Whedon writes dialogue, and I thought Buffy was trite and trendy. However, I can agree with you on Farscape being a worthy show, and if you liked Farscape, you'll probably like Torchwood.
Watching Dr. Who is optional. He's a catalyst, but he's not required to get full entertainment value out of Torchwood.
One thing, though: Captain Jack is from the far-off future where everybody is apparently bisexual, and as such there are moments of gay/bi behavior that may bother some people. It doesn't bug me (it's his character, and it's no different than straight relationships being played on shows) but it's an unavoidable detail of the show.
By the way- The ratings for the show seem to indicate that it's been picking up viewers this season. I must not be the only one who has seen the show's newest season as it's best.

    Marsters-- That's the dude.

    by zerocorpse

He was pretty good in Torchwood.
Another episode I'd recommend is "Adrift", which is about what happens when people get sucked INTO the dimensional rift. The rest of the series is concerned with what comes out.
Let's just say that getting sucked into a dimensional rift isn't as fun as it was for the kids in the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon...

    by oisin5199

Spike, one of the best written characters in fantasy/scifi television. See 'Lovers Walk,' 'Fool for Love' and 'Lies My Parents Told Me' and try to tell me different. He's also awesome as Brainiac, the best non-Lex villain on Smallville. The guy just rocks.

S1 was kind of the introduction to the strike team and the barn. It shifts focus to arcs more and more in the subsequent seasons.BTW, they've started running teasers for S7 -- "if I see you again" "Fall '08"

    Latest Torchwood.

    by gotilk

Definitely worth a watch and one of the best of the whole series. Underrated show of the year. I just hope there's another. For those who think it's necessary to watch WHO in order to keep up with Torchwood, do not worry. It very much stands alone. It's like Who in few ways, but to simplify, it's a PG-13 (sometimes R) version of Who and X-files combined. You can tell they have budget limitations sometimes, but other times the show surprises me visually. In a way it's probably best for the show that they have limited effects budgets. It's very character-driven, well-written and well acted. I hope the break between seasons isn't too long this time around. This season felt far too short.

    Buffy higlights worthless

    by jbs0209

    3 minute clip
    1:45 used in introductions everyone
1:00 of Joss talking about high school fears (really?)
0:15 of them asking a question and Sarah making a funny while Joss is talking.
Seriously this was the worse clip of the bunch. I learned nothing from this
aside from I would have really liked to have heard the other people talk.

Shield == rape of the week

    by jbs0209

I liked the Shield until it turned into the rape of the week.
obviously, murder is no longer scarry enough to us.
With shows like the Shield and Law & Order:SUV it is obvious that rape is the new murder.
In order to get an emotional reaction out of viewers the bar has been raised to rape
Just wait in 20-30 years TV will have to show cannibalism to get a reaction.
PS: AICN, get a Preview button for Christ sake.

beautiful and tragic episode. Very sad and perfect. Torchwood was a very good show last season. This season it has graduated into true brilliance. More sex and death and tragedy than Doctor Who, but they both work beautifully in their own spheres. Martha proved she coul step into the Torchwood world and become as much a part o the family as she dd in Doctor Who. And Marster's Capt. John Hart was an ispired guest shot, calling to mind Spike from Buffy and shaking things up with similar flare ad wit. And I agree ZeroCorps, I think there's a certain unflinching quality to this show that matches Farscape, whether dealing wth sex, humor, or tragedy, neither show pulls their punches. I love torchwood for that. And I frelling love Farscape.

And ultimately found it to be a parade of set and costume design and not much else. Every character has their little secret that's eating them up, and, nor much else...Not hating, I just don't think I'll be back for seconds.

    by zer0cool2k2

and it's set in the early 1960's. if you don't know the time period it's set in, you probably shouldn't be saying whether it sucks or not. sure you'll see kids using plastic dry-cleaning bags as toys, or flying around the huge cars sans seatbelt, and doctors giving exams with cigarette in hand, but those things are just set dressing to the great characters and story.

They're all a bunch of people working to deliver empty promises. The main character lies about everything including his name. There is a hollowness to the characters, but in an intentional way.
