There used to be Frank Miller's Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT set pics! Sam The Man! Spirit! Scarlett! Eva! More!
Quint here again... That didn't last long. Pics removed at request of Lionsgate, both here and at Dark Horizons. I'm sure glad none of our readers would save these pics...
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The pimp daddy Garth Franklin at Dark Horizons got a great bunch of images from the shooting of THE SPIRIT, directed by Frank Miller from his adaptation of Will Eisner's character. Get 'em while you can!
I visited the set a little while back (read that here!!!) and the below pics are definitely indicative of what I saw. Lots of green, but some awesome costumes. I pulled a few (only 6 out of 20), so make sure to click on any of the below to see the full gallery over at DH.
You'll see Sam Jackson wearing that awesome pimp costume I talked about in the report, Edgar Stiles from 24 as one of the thugs (standing next to one Scarlett Johansson, whom I unfortunately did not get to see live in the flesh), Eva Mendes in her crazy outfit and, of course, The Spirit himself. Macht has the chiseled features. He seemed to really get the character when I was there. Now it's up to Frank himself. If he can handle a solo outing without the knowhow of Rodriguez. He was very comfortable and laid back when I was there, so I have hope. Plus the pics are just sweet. Can't wait to see 'em after they've been through the post cycle and we really get to see what this world looks like brought to life...

Hope it turns out good.

Good jacket work for Samuel L
-
Major shitfest in the making- Frank Millers an idiot with no real talent. The only reason Sin City/300 were good was cause of Rodriguez/Snyder.
-
Eh? You mean that illegal immigrant 2 bit hack wot did spykids and all that.. fuck off!!
-
Looks like Robin grew up, bought a hat, got rid of the tights and still managed to come off as gay looking.
-
green screen panto to me...
bunch of arse, sack of cack -
left me with that feeling you get when its hot and you didnt quite wipe your arse enough... or is that just me... whilst watching the mist felt like almost shittin yourself and not, but then right at the end you realise you have been sat in your own shit all the time.. or is that just me?
-
hit.
-
That would be the sound of my boner poping for this movie. Damn.
-
bad just bad...
-
its just you (referring to sweeny todd)
-
you gotta admit, eva mendez looks pretty fucking hot in some of those costumes..but then again, when doesn't eva mendez look hot
-
was sweeny todd good then?
-
but name a decent move shes been in... nah didnt think so...
-
And this looks exactly like The Spirit comics. Frank didn't create The Spirit, but every bit of Sin City and 300 was his work other than Snyder's addition of the spartan queen's little side story, so please take a look and you'll understand why Miller deserves the credit for those films.
-
Sweeny todd was pretty much universally loved by audiences and critics..even got nominated for a few oscars
Yeah, the mist was probly shit(didn't bother to watch it), but if sweeny todd's not a good movie then I don't know what is. -
its one thing to make a comic its another to direct a movie based on that comic. the credit goes to the director in my opinion
-
Wearing the adios t-shirt? Pah, anyway, you can't tell anything from production pics of green screen based stuff, that stuff always looks goofy and stupid, it's all about whether the merging of technology works after the fact.
-
Frank Miller is like that firecrotch from Stoned Age who gets the laser pointed at him at the Blue Oyster Cult show. Which is my roundabout way of saying that Robert Rodriguez brainwashed him with his green screenery and now he thinks it's the only way people make talkies.
-
I'm too drunk to explain why.
-
It's dead edgar from 24, not Herc from The Wire. Mixing up my fat white guys there.
-
i admit the look the whole feel of the movie was perfect, BUT i did feel depp was miscast and what about that ending.. come on i wanted depp to open a chain of barbers and give mrs whatyamacallher a good old fashioned seeing to...
-
Ok, maybe I can give him some credit for the look of 300, but honestly, have you seen any of the Sin City comics?? Yeah, the stories and the characters may be Frank's, but taken alone, the comics just wouldn't stand up to scrutiny if they hadn't been made into movies
-
That's a fair point mate.--For me, it looks exactly like the comic, but to actually make it look like the comic and be watchable is a task I wouldn't put on anyone. The Spirit is a strange property, and probably wouldn't see the light of day on a screen without Miller involved. He's esoteric and sort of like Ulysses and James Joyce. Most comic fans know of the guy, and can tell you about him, but have never actually read much of the comic.
-
isnt he @thing' from the shield?
-
You make a good point about the transition of the book to screen. And I do have all the Sin City trades as they were originally published. As a comics fan, I don't necessarily approach them the same way everyone else would.
-
millers like james joyce... do you mean his comics ramble on for volume after volume about his love of ' the inner organs of beasts and fowl' Mmmm
I get your drift, sometimes you need to know when to stick to the medium you know, you know? -
Scarlett...hhmmm....
-
Of a paper towel rack. But damn, that girl is hot. I think she needs to go into porn. Her acting style would fit in perfectly there.
-

well, I was saying that bit about james joyce more in regards to
by -=shin=-
In that every writer cites Ulysses, but no one has read the thing. It's something people talk about to sound cool. I've read comics for 25 years and own maybe four Spirit comics. Haha, I can see how you can apply that to Frank though.
-
its getting late but should i, take a piss, have a smoke or get a drink
-
Sin City comics wouldn't stand up had they not been made into movies? Would you care to explain why they stood up just fine prior to being movies then?
-
LOL yeah I guess that wouldn't be a bad ending. But no point arguing; to each his own. I personally thought the original ending was OK, although I did wish they showed what happened to his daughter.
-
good analogy, like it..
-
come on, nobody knew Sin City existed before the movie came out.
-
..back to exam prepping
-
his daughter ran off with the sop. and ended up just outside london running a liyyle alehouse called the 'orphaned bint' she and the sop live a full life until he unfortuntley woke up one morning to realise that he was todds alter ego and was infact shaggin his daughter, in a fit of dispair he cut of his own elbows, at the knee
-
The only people that didn't know about Sin City were canning peaches in their bomb shelter waiting for the apocalypse, I don't know what you're talking about
-
Among us comic fans, Sin City was hugely popular. We all had copies. I pretty much by anything Miller puts out, I even have 'The Pro' looking at me from across my room. ...And that terrible Spawn/Batman crossover that Miller did with McFarlane back in the day. I've got to respectfully disagree with you though Gwai Lo. I couldn't force people to check out Sin City, unless they were art students, before the movie came out. And some of the folks I tried to get to check it out run art galleries in NYC and London. Once the movie came out, they all bought copies of the trades and act like they've always had them. And, frankly, I'm pissed of at that fact.
-
THE SPIRIT? Okay, alright, whatever. I'm sure it'll be... something. Else. But what I'm really interested in is SIN CITY 2.
-
She needs to get naked on film. Also Jessica Alba. The key difference between the two being that Scarlett can actually act. But otherwise, they're just two hot chicks who need to be naked and writing in ecstacy on my bed.
-
I guess you're right. Me, I remember my halcyon days as a young lad browsing through my older brother's comic collection and finding lots of titties in the Sin City books. Instant Frank Miller fan for life. But I still take issue with Sarsy's original comment that the books don't stand up in print form. The books are great pieces of noir pulp that would still be fantastic had Rodriguez never decided to take a break from making silly movies for the chilluns. Again I can't really be bothered to explain any further than that because I've been drinking some sort of bizarre apricot beer for the last eight hours and now I'm thoroughly soused. And now I'm going to bed. Goodnight, true believers.
-
Insult me, please.
-
Or do I love Darwyn Cooke's run a little too much?
-
That MIGHT be hot but I'd rather they be writhing in ecstasy.
:) -
One of the great perils of modern cinema.
-
It's a fine line between pimpin' and cross-dressing apparently, and Jackson has stumbled.
-
that Busted Tees girl more than makes up for it.
-
The Pro was Garth Ennis, not Frank Miller. Outside of that though I largely agree with you, Sin City was huge for Dark Horse back in the day, and was one of the most popular 'non superhero' series of comics of the 90's. Anyone who was into comics at the time had at least heard of Sin City unless they were living under a rock, and anyone who read comics beyond just the standard superhero fare likely read at least one Sin City yarn.
-
I don't know if he's going to run out Ezekial 25:17 or pitch the Psychic Friends hotline at me. "Get your fortune told, motherfucker!"
-
I never was a big Spirit fan, although I did enjoy Eisner's artwork. I hope this flick turns out better than the pics look. Right now it resembles the Batman TV show or at least Shumacher's, version with the "Adios" henchmen and neon colors. Maybe if they change it to that same kind of stylized black & white with limited color look similar to Sin City. It could then have that gritty '40s-'50's detective "Naked City" look.
-
It's always been a convention in the comics never to show the face of the Spirit's nemesis, the Octopus. Here, Sam Jackson's on display in full-on pimp mode. In the comics, the Spirit wears a blue suit and hat and a white shirt, not the Green Day circa-American Idiot-style get-up above. From Will Eisner to Darwyn Cooke, the Spirit's mostly been a pretty whimsical, light-hearted character (with some darker edges), and his adventures usually reflect that. What's the betting Frank Miller goes for more SIN CITY hyper-noir? It could be great, but it's definitely looking like it's own thing.
-
why black clothes on Spirit? hard to tell how its gonna end up. Very nice looking knife-slasher.
-
Really.
How hard wouuld it have been to stick with the blue hat, suit and mask? It could even have been a dark blue to stick with Miller's heavy contrasts. Changing the X-Men's circus-like appearance to black uniforms for film ... I kind of understand. But this? There's no reason to make him all black. It's just such an obvious choice for an update. "Hey, let's do the Spirit ... but make him all black! Cool!" What's next? A horrible all-black costume for Green Lantern? What am I saying? "Green" Lantern? They'll make it Black Lantern with a cool black-light power ring that will be used to find jiz stains at a crime scene or some such nonsense.
(Sorry, I'm not sure if that's the proper way to spell "jiz". Please do forgive me.) -
Who releases green screen images? (Psst ... first time directors) Follow Zack and the Watchmen's lead ... wait until the FX shots are composited or your film looks totally JV.
-
Can't any of these guys actually TRY and make a movie without plastering a studio in GREEN? It's not set in outer space, so why not give some set-builders and location scouts some work?
-
...Ru Paul after a long night of drinking and his boyfriend broke up with him. I was there.
-
The Spirt , if true to the comics, would be a high spirited, tongue in cheek adventure, fist fights, chases, sexy dames, with darkness at the edge. Now..Miller is a talentless hack, this is fact - his Sin City comics were laughably bad attempts at writing noir, something a 12 year old might churn out, and the movie was horrid. Now you can bet your ass he's all grim & gritty here too...fuckin hack could not even get the Spirit's suit right.
-
Pictures with a green screen... Miller needs to come back to earth.
-
hot, hot, fucking berserk. i like how sam jackson has basically resigned himself to playing.....sam jackson. he understands that, like denzel or sean connery, he is hired not to play characters, but to play himself.
-
Frank Miller needs to realize that he sucks but I suppose it's too late for that. None of these pics look good. Quit sucking Miller balls AICN!!!
-
Looks okay. Need to see how the CG backrounds fit with the images.
-
Because if I said something now I might just be a prick and say this looks like sloppy shit. Hopefully they'll fix it up in post.
-
I've loved Eisner's character since I was a kid (it was essentially my introduction to "adult" comics), but I'm worried about translating this material to film. I'm not crazy about these costumes, and despite her beauty, Eva Mendes has sucked the life out of every movie she has ever been in. Unfortunately, I see this being about as popular as "The Shadow," "The Phantom" and "The Rocketeer." Old-timey comic films are a tough sell.
-
Damn you Lionsgate.....Damn you
-
Looked funny to me at at first, but shit, this has potential. the ladies, the suits, some great desgns here. Shouldnt pass judgment until you see the settings. Sin City meets Dick Tracy.
-
I'm all for Green Screen set photos, as I actually have a damn imagination unlike, well, everyone else on this talkback. Holy shit.
-
Overexposed!!! Aren't there any other over-the-top black dudes out there?
-
"The only reason Sin City/300 were good was cause of Rodriguez/Snyder."The flaw in your dumbass argument is that Sin City and 300 were both already fantastic before Rodriguez and Snyder got anywhere near them!
-
The Spirit has always been, canonically, wearing black. The blue was a result of the inability to print the strip with him wearing black in a way that didn't look shit, but though it looks blue on the page, it's meant to be black in the story.
-
Enjoy: http://tinyurl.com/5khmlb

...because I am a culturally illiterate cretin.
Just because a twenty-year-old Blockbuster employee hasn't heard of The Spirit doesn't mean it isn't a big deal. Eisner invented the grammar of an entire medium. The last guy to do that was - what? Welles? DW Griffith? Obviously this has no bearing on whether or not the movie will be good, but I think if anything's going to shift Miller out of creative autopilot, it's this. -
Frank Miller, uhm, not so much. You can tell it was Franks half-assed art that designed these costumes. This will probably feel like a Sin City Prequel. Episode 1, if you like, for people that dug that crap.

i want em.

I AM SO THERE.

FUCK FRANK MILLER... and the black and white horse he rode in on
by ambush_bug
This looks like garbage. What the hell is this Sin City looking shit - The Spirit was a Will Eisner comic book and was style COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Re-styling it as a Sin City story is fucking insult. Fuck Frank Miller - I hope he chokes on a cock. I knew they'd end up doing this. I knew Eisner and he'd be rolling over in his grave right now if he saw how they were doing exactly what he didn't want them to do (the reason why the complete rights weren't sold until he died in 2005.)
-
...disrespectful, overhyped motherfucker you are Frank. Really. Drop dead. I am so fucking pissed at you. You made a promise to his face and you broke it. I hope you catch cancer and die you piece of shit.
I hope this movie fails to make a dime. -
So who's got em? Eh? I needs this people! I NEEDS IT!!

Ambush, you say some stupid fucking things on these TBs...

... but that subject line is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Onya mate.
-
Fucking return key. Fucking lack of edit function that other sites have had for literally decades...
-
I respect your knowledge on the character, and I'm not questioning your facts ...
BUT - to say that "canonically" The Spirit is wearing black is a bit inaccurate. That's like saying The HULK is "canonically" gray. I'm aware of printing capabilities of bygone eras. In my opinion, The Spirit's blue costume, regardless of what it was originally meant to be, is one of those "happy mistakes". Sorry, raw_bean, but The Spirit wears blue. Surely today's printing standards have changed. If what you say is true, why hasn't someone who TRULY loves the character, and is aware of his history (Darwyn Cooke) done a book featuring an all-black costume? I'm not questioning your facts, just your use of the word "canonical". -
Sin City bored the hell out of me. The CG generated backgrounds felt too flat and claustrophobic, there was never a sense of "places".
