AICN Games: Monki is going to NYC to visit Rockstar!

Published at:  Apr 01, 2008 8:48:03 AM CDT

Greetings humans, Monki here with a pretty freakin' sweet preview to an event I'm about to head to.

Quint may get to fly to Prague and party with Shia Labeouf on the set of Transformers, but I have received the preverbal golden ticket in the video game realm. This Friday I'll be visiting Rockstar Games in New York City to get some hands-on time with Grand Theft Auto 4.

If you've read anything else I've written about the Grand Theft Auto series, you know I'm a fan. Of course, if you've been around video games for the past decade or so, you SHOULD be a fan of this series. GTA3 pushed the limits of what a videogame could be and Rockstar has been on the bleeding edge of videogames since.

So Monki, why are you rubbing this sweet opportunity in our collective faces? Glad you asked...you see, while I'm up there I'm going to have a chance to sit down with Jeronimo Barrera, VP of Development at Rockstar. He's been with the company since the doors cracked open so many years ago. Anyway, this gives you, our loyal readership (and you talkback haters) the chance to send a question to someone behind one of the most important development houses of today.

That's right, if you have a question about anything Rockstar related just write it down in the talkback below and I'll relay a few of the best ones out to Jeronimo when I take a break from some Liberty City madness.

Also, that means I'll be in New York City this weekend, so if any of you cats have a way to get me in to Saturday Night Live this week (Christopher Walken is hosting!) I would offer you my firstborn. If anything I'd like to check out Barcade while I'm up there. Feel free to drop me an email if you'd like to join.

Time to get your thinkin' caps out and pound out a few questions, I'll be back next week with the results! Until next time, back up the tree I go!

-Monki

Guy who interviewed there says he was asked the same question. The good news is they have a "guy who hooks us up." I guess that's why the game got delayed so long. Weed naps.

I'm interested in the reasons for the removal of planes from the game. Also like the previous talkbacker said, any crossovers with past characters in this one?

    by jackie_o

Could you ask him how he sleeps at night, knowing that he has corrupted the minds of millions of children with filth like Manhunt? Just kidding! I used to smoke so much weed and play that game for hours. Fantasy and reality began to blend and I'd be constantly looking over my shoulder for roving gangs of loonies. Being Edinburgh, there was a 50/50 chance of there being one. Manhunt, you saved my life!

    question

    by jimmyandthetermites

As we get closer to the release date, there has been a lot less negative press about the violence in video games, especially when you compare GTAIV to the other GTA's or Bully. Does Jeronimo Barrera have any thoughts on this and does Rockstar miss the attention?

According to interviews I've read, they removed the airplanes because they didn't fit in with the one-city approach of GTAIV. However, the helicopters are still in and apparently they are better than ever.

This is out to buy with real money in less than 4 weeks. Every game magazine/web site on the planet has covered this to death. What do you wanna know, I know half the plot and all the Multiplayer options, as loads of people have been playing this for a while.

P.S. buy this for X box 360, not PS3 as it will have extra downloadable content that PS3 owners will never see, oh and multiplayer will work a lot better as well. also no one has ever seen it run on a PS3 Yet.

    GTA and British humor....

    by connor187

I always find it funny when I hear about Americans not getting british humor. I thin its bullshit. Sure we do have different kinds of humor but to say that one dosnt get the other is stupid. Take GTA for example, a very british game with very British humor running right through it. Then again it might help that Rockstar always choose to set their games in fictional American cities, which kind of pisses me off because I would love to see a GTA game set in the UK. I know there was GTA London but that was three generations ago. Its sad to say but I think Rockstar wont do it because if they did it wouldnt sell as good because Americans wouldnt buy it.

What I would like to know...

    by mullah omar

What (if any) game elements / themes / features proposed (or even designed) by the Rockstar development team have been vetoed by the corporate management team? I would just like some examples of what the management team judges to be too extreme or controversial to implement.

And if the answer to that is "none," then my follow-up would be the same question applied to junior and senior developers - specifically, I'd like to know what ideas have been shut down in development as being too hot for even Rockstar to put out there.

    EA will fail

    by thelastcleric

At least in trying to buy up the company before GTAIV hits, which was the point all along. Once this game releases, Take Two stock will soar and make a buy out much more expensive and difficult. I actually like many of EA's games but they don't need to own everything and everybody.

    Question.

    by dreamseller

Why is the Uncut Version of Manhunt 2 not released in Austria or the Netherlands? Because the politicians over there don't give a fuck about violence in videogames and it could be sold there in stores. So we all could import it and be happy.

The no-planes thing can be answered right away

    by performingmonkey

Firstly, the world they've created this time is more realistic, so having crazy plane flying like in San Andreas would totally go against that. Secondly, they don't want people flying planes in a replica of NYC. It's just not a good idea. Though my guess is you'll never fly planes in the series again.

    Question to Rockstar about GTA4

    by x_dereks_x

Ok, so my question is how did Rockstar came with the idea of using Eastern Europe flavor in the Game.

I'm from Ukraine, and from what I've been seeing till now it's really impressive. It's actually first Western media product, where Russians and other Slavic nationalities aren't depicted through the bunch of soviet cliches. Thanks to the Rockstar for such a great job!

    @Connor187...

    by moribundman2000

True. It's always amused the hell out of me. There are always a number of very British references in GTA games that probably go over a hell of a lot of Brits' heads, let alone anyone else's...

The actual games (barring voiceovers and post-production)have all been made in Scotland (or in the PSP versions' case Yorkshire) and yet it amuses me when the British media use them to demonise US gaming violence, or the American media vaunt them as American classics.

I'm surprised Jack Thompson hasn't tried to launch trade sanctions with the UK (although apparently he's now been castrated in legal terms due to going slightly TOO mad... ;-)

The cheapest you can get a brand new PS3 for is $400 for the 40GB model (no BC). But if wait until June, you can get an 80GB PS3 with a dualshock 3 controller and MGS4 for $500... maybe less if Sony decides on any price dropping by E3... just so you know...

    Johnno...

    by shermdawg

...I was referring to the 40gb model. With a extended warranty/replacement plan, accessories, and a game to tide me over until GTA drops (if I was to buy it now), it'd be pushing $600 smackers.

    Two Words: FREE PLAY!

    by eggbeater

(spoiler for multiplayer on GTA4) There is a mode called free play. I'm assuming of course that this means you can just get together with friends and rip shit up. This is the main reason I want this game. Everything else is just a bonus. I can't wait for this. Off Topic: Portal's theme song "Still Alive" is up on Rock Band for free. Pretty cool. Now I want some cake.

    Q for Rockstar:

    by cepper

I would ask them why they haven't introduced "carjacking skill" as a roleplaying aspect to the game. They had all those shooting abilities and "driving ability" (which didn't do squat) in the last one. I think it would be much more relevant to have a carjacking ability which progresses throughout the game. Early on you can only steal crappy cars, later the mid levels, and not until the end can you steal the pimped out sportscars. I always found it ridiculous that from the beginning of the game you could just go get the Ferrari-type car (so long as you knew where to look) and make EVERY single race a joke.
Even if you don't like the idea, you have to admit it's better than making the player go get food every 10 minutes. *ugh*
