LEGION Gathers A Cool Cast!!

Published at:  Mar 28, 2008 9:11:59 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Dennis Quaid has joined the cast of LEGION. Tyrese Gibson, Charles S. Dutton, Lucas Black, and Paul Bettany will also star.

the thriller casts Bettany as the archangel Michael, the only one standing between mankind and an apocalypse, after God loses faith in humanity. Man's lone hope rests with a group of strangers who must deliver a baby they realize is Christ in his second coming.

..says THIS ARTICLE in Variety.

Quaid is, well, Quaid. No matter what he's in, he;ll always be Gordo Cooper to me ("Who's the best pilot you ever saw?"). Tyrse is cool. Dutton is cool. Bettany is cool. Even if the film flounder horribly, it should be fun to see these folks do their stuff.

LEGION will be directed by Scott Stewart. He's an effects guy who worked on PIRATES 2 & 3, LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, and MARS ATTACKS among other credits.

before they make up for having such a crappy plot. Leave the second coming stuff to Mel Gibson. He's the only one with enough crazy conviction to sell the premise to the movie buying public. The film would still suck, but at least people will go and see it.

But Smith was right -- and in fact, he made it a plot point to the entire arc. AFAIK, everything in the Bible about the Second Coming indicates Jesus will return as an adult, that there will be a Descension.

Oh, God loses faith in humanity, huh? Since when is God a temporal creature? He's omnipresent, and that includes the temporal sphere. He can't just decide on March 10th to lose faith in humanity, if he loses faith, he would lose it at all points in time past and future -- and the effect would be the same as if he never had faith in the first place.

I once asked an Evangelical why God would send an upstanding an moral unbeliever to Hell just because that unbeliever didn't believe in him. I mean, isn't that a little petty for the creator of the Universe? Guess what the answer was? It is because God, even though he may love the unbeliever, cannot stand to be in the presence of someone who doesn't believe in him. But this is an omnipotent creature, right? Yet somehow belief is his kryptonite? God's powers are less consistent than Superman's.

Unfortunately they won't give this a downer ending. We need a movie where there's no glimmer of hope at the end. Humanity ends. Period. No miracle cures, no virgin births, no saved-by-bacteria-humans-became-immune-to millenia-ago, no iMac uploaded computer viruses, no shuttle pilots flying into cracks with warheads, no wise-cracking-made-Harry-cry oil riggers waiting until the final second to push the button, no supposed-former-infatuation-junkies swooping down to stop the angel of death, no Polish astronauts planning a nighttime landing on the sun with nukes, no drilling to the earth's core in a ship made of an indestructibe metal called CanYouBelieveThisBullshitium. None of it. Just humanity wiped clean from the face of the earth by the invisible Jewish carpenter in the sky.

What I meant was, if you're going to have an end of days movie where God decides to go back to the drawing board, I personally wouldn't want the Almighty coming down and saying, "Humanity made a mistake. Now it's time to erase that mistake." The mistake being gay marriage, blow jobs in the Oval Office and wanting to tax the upper class. I don't want a movie about the director's agenda, but rather what you would expect a god to get really cheesed off at, like allowing things to get so bad that we kill each other over $5 in the cash register. I'm an aethist and I'm dying to see a God vs. Satan movie told right so that tells you just how compelling the source material is. It just needs to be a true good vs. evil battle, not a left vs. right squabble.

Whenever I hear crazy christians talk about the revelations and all that will happen I just tell them that I doubt if there is someone with omnipotent power he would make such a boring uninspired Apocalypse. End of Earth. boring. I want to see the end of the Multiverse at the hands of the Anti Monitor. Instead of earth threatened by beasts, have reality threatened by a psychotic superboy.

Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon." - Boring

"Seven Corps will be born. Seven Corps will shine their light brightly. Seven Corps will be at War" - Epic.

Revelations doesn't sound as badass as FINAL CRISIS or THE BLACKEST NIGHT.

Ripped off (badly) more often than H.R. Giger. Exorcist III was a terrific movie that desrves a second look. The ending was forced on Blatty by the studio becuase they wanted hollywood BS payoff rather than the chilling psycological study that the film was supposed to be. Read the book (legion by Blatty) for those of you who still read. The movie has far more in common with the Ninth Configuration than the original Exocist film. George C. THe problem is, HOD

    by greyspecter

that all the symptoms that Christians speak out against, as per the Biblical teachings, such as gay marriage, fornication, etc, spring from the root cause, the 'original sin' recorded in Genesis 3. The original sin, incidently, is why Satan rebelled against God, so it's vital to any tale of Good v. Evil. The original sin is this: to put oneself before God on the hierarchy of the soul, which Lucifer did and Adam did, and you and I also do. It's not a question of politics, true, but the root question of good and evil, morality, etc. is what has to be there, right?

    by hawaiian organ donor

If I remember correctly from my days at the private Christian school I attended as a wee one, in the same passage in the bible where it says that a man shall not sleep with another man, it also says death shall be dished out to farmers who sow more than one crop in the same field and to people who wear clothes of blended materials. Now I'm pretty sure even half nekkid tribesmen in the middle of nowhere are wearing a dual blend thong so that means every man, woman and child would all be sent to hell. That would make for a super short movie. I was referring to a Heaven vs Hell movie that doesn't take the literal translation of the Old and New Testaments. Less "word of man", more "power of the almighty."

And here Iam standing around doing people watching because people in DC dont go on vacations. And WHAM this random big black guy comes out of no where walking INTO my keosk saying "Yo man Im using your juice Im using your juice." Im thinking what the fuck? Alright sure I guess. Whatever he meant I was thinking Fuck It? So translation means. (Im going to plug my Sidekick into your power adaptor so I can charge it and leave you to gaurd it for an hour. I litterally never even responded to him because he just stormed in and took me by surprise. So sure you can charge your gay T-Mobile device. So he starts shopping around with his 2 body gaurds. (each white by the way...weird) He goes into EB Games and just has his goons staring me down the whole time like Im going to touch or steal the Sidekick. I was located in the food court so later they get some lunch and Tyrese and his friends are just staring me down like Im going to open his phone and still Lohans number or something. He finally gets up, starts walking towards me and just grabs his Sidekick and c harger without a thank you and or any verbal or physical form of grattitude. Maybe he thought I worked for the mall and he didnt need to be polite? All in all he just came off as a cocky prick. I met alot of celebs in that mall and he was the worst. The nicest celeb? Ironically R. Kelly....guess I wasnt piss worthy ...sigh...Oh and Bobby Brown talked to me once there and he was SHIT FACED...musta been 11am too. Tyrese sucks. Thanks

you're referring to the Mosaic law, under which it was unlawful to eat pig meat. In the New Testament, however, the Mosaic law was rendered moot for the most part, provided that people accept the new law, which is grace through faith in Jesus Christ. However, all the behaviors murder, gossip, lying, theft, homosexuality, lust, etc are still sins. And homosexuality is still condemned in the New Testament, along with the previously mentioned sins among others. Also, it's not as much the condemnation of people to hell by God, it's more of people chosing to "rule in Hell rather than serve in Heaven" in their own lives.
Xiphos, we disagree on the rationality of the Bible and Christian tenets. I'm saying that if you're going to work under the assumption of certain premises the Bible teaches, then you must be consistent with all of what the Bible teaches, namely, the all-powerful nature of God vs. the inability of God to escape a human body. If you're going to play tennis, play by the rules or don't call it tennis.

The thing that really bothered me in Sunday school...

    by rbatty024

was that even if you are the nicest person on Earth, helped people out, gave money to charities, etc., but you didn't believe in God, then you were condemned to Hell. To me condemning someone to Hell for not believing in God is an immoral act. Now, I've made a few immoral mistakes in my life, but generally I've tried to be an ethical person. However, I have never done anything as atrocious as send someone to Hell because they did not believe in me. My point is, if what my church taught me is true, that you must believe in God (specifically that Jesus is the son of God) or else you go to hell, then I am a more ethical and upstanding person than this God character. So, why would I want to worship someone who has condemned countless of innocent people to eternal damnation?

I don't believe in The Bible, but taken as mythology there's some interesting stuff in there. Most of it is in the Old Testament. The Gospels are interesting but the rest of the New Testament pretty much blows, especially the Pauline letters. Absolutely awful, and half of them aren't even written by Paul.

Some people don't think because they are so bitter that they had a sneaky Uncle hump them up their rancid asses and they liked it so much they would leave Sexual Healing playing in the background thus inducing a blind self-loathing that forces them to show how much of a complete cock munching shit nugget they are in front of everyone. Seriously, go be bitter and disillusioned somewhere else you dripping cunts. It's getting old.

    Just really bad theology...

    by antoniusbloc

...this film is based on. A complete philosophical misunderstanding of God, as Christians understand, and the purpose of the birth of Christ. Logically, Jesus cannot be born again, or it wouldn't be Jesus. Christians believe in the Trinity, a fourth makes no logical sense. Jesus already accomplished his mission, and was already Resurrected. Not just 'revived', not just rising, but his body is renewed into an eternal spiritual body. There would be no point in doing it all over again if it even has any logical meaning to say Christ is coming back as an infant. One does not 'come back' as infants in Christianity, perhaps in some eastern religion that believes in reincarnation, but for Christians, our individual identity and physical life have a true and permanent meaning to our eternal destiny. Our identities are eternal. God also loves His creation perfectly, an idea of God 'losing faith' in His creation makes no sense. Also, if God lost faith, why would He come back? The plot contradicts itself unless the creators have no understanding of who Jesus is, that he is God. This is what happens when, like many fundamentalists, a lazy and simplistic interpretation of Christianity is made. It's amazing that what is essentially a story directed toward children, the Chronicles of Narnia, reflect with much more depth Christian theology, because the creator of the story, Lewis, understood the complexity of the Christian religion.

One thing, though, putting homosexuality in the same category as murder and rape isn't going to make you a very popular poster. Even the homophobes don't like being told to hate homos because the Bible says so. I know this is a pickle, in this day and age, your faith telling you one thing, and the concept of Human Rights contradicting it, but isn't there something about that in the Bible too? Something about leading a pious life, but respecting the laws of man? I don't know, I'm a lapsed catholic turned atheist, who cares what I have to say, right?

specifically, that said, if I remember correctly, that when Moses brought the Tablets down from Mount Siania that it was new contract between God and man, and that the previous rules no longer applied. I don't recall homosexuality being referenced in the ten commandments. But even if it is the interpretation indicates that the Biblical rules are for man's benefit and may change to fit the changing needs of man.

Hmm, reading my post to Grey, I regret being soo sarcastic

    by samsquanch

There actually is an opportunity to have a respectful and interesting conversation on the topic of how Christianity can accept homosexuality. I'm no expert, I'm neither christian nor homosexual, but as one of those many people who sits in the audience watching the conflict being endlessly continued, I'm just as frustrated as anyone.

The actual text in the Bible was written by men. Only the most fervent and wild-eyed fundamentalists take every passage as literal truth, so for those thinking believers who choose the essence of the Word, rather than the literal text, I ask you: Don't you think it's possible that since homosexuality is a perennial, ubiquitous human phenomenon, it might be exempt from the categories of morality and/or sin? Don't you think that it's possible that in this one case at least, the men who wrote the Bible might have flubbed it? That its likely that their own agendas may have gotten stirred in with the Holy Word? After hundreds of years of rewrites, edits, translations, lost and found bits and pieces, patches, and fixes that it's JUST POSSIBLE that not everything in the Bible follows the essence of the Word of God? We understand what homosexuality is now, better than they did 2000 years ago. It isn't demons, it isn't divine punishment, its a component of human sexuality. Even heterosexuality has been re-evaluated by the church since those times.

I brought up human rights in my last post. Now, whatever you may think or believe about gay people, their lifestyle, their sexuality, or their souls, you have to admit that they are human, right? and that they have the same rights as anyone else? Don't you think that in this day and age the Church could find it in its collective heart to accept that? Isn't that more in line with the essence of the Word?

Or should we just stone the faggots? Would that make Jesus happy?

    On the phrase "Legion"

    by jackrabbitslim

BTW - for those few who might not know - the "Legion" bit refers to Jesus finds a possessed guy and asks the demon what its name was. Its response was the rather cryptic "My name is Legion, for we are many" most likely referring to the Roman term for a Division of troops. Jesus then gets rather annoyed with this and sends the Demon into a herd of pigs who run off a cliff. Lovely stuff

    About the Bible and Homosexuality.

    by rbatty024

I've always read the Old Testament condemnation of homosexuality as a law meant to help the tribe of Israel survive. Think of it, a small tribe in the desert surrounded by enemies. One of the means of surviving is reproducing. So, the ban isn't a moral condemnation so much as a survival technique. Today, when we're overpopulated, the ban on homosexuality no longer has a purpose. Those who believe in it are merely picking and choosing from the Bible in order to reinforce their own personal prejudices.

You know, JackRabbitSlim, the one thing that always bothered me about that story, was the fact that the herd of pigs belonged to someone. So, Jesus pretty much killed off someone else's livestock. Anyway, it's probably one of the cooler parts of the New Testament.

    by crichtonastronut

like something they'd put in that Mitchell and Webb look. Sort of like when they had the Bond-like villain try to hire a contractor to turn the book case into a revolving wall. "That's a load baring wall." "We can do this one, but we'll have to take the fireplaceout. We can't rotate the chimney. And we'll have to put a big sign that says this wall will rotate."

And the trap door bit was even funnier. Real life logic and movie logic don't work.

Christians shouldn't equate homosexuality with a mortal sin like murder, it is viewed more like a condition such as alchoholism. Morally, homosexuality is not much worse than a promiscuous heterosexual lifestyle. It goes back to creation, that each sex has a God-given purpose, differnet purposes, just as each individual is different; homosexuality goes against Nature as God intended based on Genesis; God says to be fruitful, a homosexual relationship biologically and naturally cannot be fruitful, in terms of offspring, and for Christians and Jews, that would also go for being spiritually fruitful. Philosophically, homosexuality is like any sin, it is called that because it ultimatley will lead you away from God and our true purpose, and our true desires. Chesterton sums it up best talking about Christian charity; we must hate the sin, more than any religion or philosophy has ever done in the past, but paradoxically, and at the same time, love and forgive the sinner more than any religion or spiritual teaching has ever done; hate the sin , love the sinner. To hate homosexuals is a graver sin for Christians than homosexuality itself, but we must never stop condemning the sin itself.

That's right about the the term 'Legion' it also philosophically refers to a characteristic of evil partly being defined as losing one's identity, losing one's God given identity and getting lost in a demonic hive, a blob that is essentially nothingness; Lewis and Chesterton compare it to many modern philosophies, such as Communism, the philosophy of the Hive, losing individuality and real meaning. Tolkien touches on it as well with the effects of the Ring, and a formless and shapeless Sauron. Evil is shapelessness, void of meaning and purpose.

    by antoniusbloc

is what leads to the idea of 'Legion', a jumbled meaningless mess...religion is organized only because God is the ultimate measure of organization as opposed to chaos. As Chesterton put it, Christianity is a philosophy of shapes and the enemy of shapelessness.

    Antonius- interesting perspective

    by samsquanch

but if that's true, the Christian definition of homosexuality as a 'condition' only counts for Christian homosexuals. Secular homosexuals, or gay people of other religions don't factor into the very specific Christian structure. I understand your point- that it qualifies as a sin because it's a behavior that doesn't fit exactly into God's rigid plan for humanity, but then so much human behavior doesn't that it almost becomes an absurd point to pursue. I know this gets into the deeper waters of debate, the Christian vs the non-Christian, which I have no interest in engaging in. Basically, your message is comforting, it means that Christians don't mean any harm by their homophobia, and, in fact, since you limit the rules to your own tribe, you are essentially harmless. As long as you don't start forcing your beliefs on non-Christians, everyone can just agree to disagree.
