Published at:  Mar 28, 2008 8:36:41 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Entertainment Weekly has released a bunch of new images from SPEED RACER. They're intersperced with some stills we've already seen. The images include automotive hijinks, and some shots of characters in action and inaction.

I'd post a few for you here, but I don't know how to capture images from EW, so just...

Emile Hirsch was great in "Into the Wild" but

    by warp11

Seeing him in a film like this kinda seems like a step down. Yea, I know even the best actors do the big action films every once in awhile, but I would have liked to have seem him in something deeper and darker - possible sci fi.

gay as in in shit. I dont get it, how do the Wachowski Brothers not see how shit this looks? They must know. If it had an awseome story I could see that making up for the 'first year VFX assignment look'. But I have a feeling the Effects will be trying to make up for the shit story and crappy acting. Its a loose loose situation. Fuck Speed Racer.

I'm a big fan of Christina Ricci, but...

    by rbatty024

she looked terrible in Black Snake Moan. She lost waaaaaay too much weight. It was hard to look at her. I, for one, don't find ribs sticking out of your body very attractive. From what I've seen of Speed Racer she looks healthier. She's one of the few genuinely talented actresses out there who refuses to pick conventional roles. In other words, she's the anti-Jessica Alba.

    Stumped By the Haters

    by baron merlot

I find myself wondering if the haters are looking at the same pics/clips that I am. The W Bros. have done an amazing job of capturing the look of a 1960's animated series and translating it to film. The frenzied energy, the colors, the blurred background during fights...it's all there! Don't you see it? What are you looking for, a realistic look for Speed Racer?

Some of the best-looking pics so far

    by kevred

I'm thinking the success of this might come down to how much they capture the goofy/spacy fun vibe of the cartoon, more so than any story or action issues. Can ultra-high technology do it without it just being overbearing and grating? Who knows. It seems like it might require some kind of different acting style from everyone--almost like the kind of thing we used to see in films like Popeye. That won't be easy for a whole cast to manage. But they certainly look the part(s).

Mainly because I really don't care about Speed Racer, does anyone REALLY care about Speed Racer? It might be the opposite

    by frankenbastard

I think it might be the other way around. Speed screws up the Mach 6 (lame car)and has to use the trusty Mach 5 (cool car) to win the race. At least that’s the way it better be. At the end of the movie if we’re with left the new Mach 6 as Speeds new ride, the film will fail for me personally. It just won’t feel right singing “he’s busy revv’n up the powerful Mach 6!”. I’ll feel empty alone and cold inside.
And Christina Ricci looks hot in this and in just about everything else she’s been in.
Another thing I noticed was on one of the new toys that came out, a couple have protective “Ejection Bubbles” ™
Ejection bubbles = guys not blowing up in car crashes.
I still can't wait to take my kid to see this, it should be fun.

    by rbatty024

I don't hate the original Matrix, but the last third of the film kind of sucked. They make a big deal about how powerful the agents are and then they decide to just storm the building? There should have been some sort of plan or more of a plot to the action than just "shoot stuff." It was as if the brothers had decided that since they made an involving and interesting film up to this point they could just coast on special effects for the third act. Pretty much what they decided to do with the sequels.

    by frankenbastard

Bytheway, The Matrix was a good film with a decent story compared the other fantasy or Sci Fi films that were being turned out at the time and it should have ended with the first one. They told the complete story it had a definite conclusion. The other 2 were really bad because they were contrived and it was a piss poor backfill job of storytelling. Just the way Lucas did with Star Wars (or as it’s now called, A New Hope) and yes Empire and Jedi included.
So yea the other 2 Matrix movies were senseless but the first one in my opinion was solid.

    Into the Wild

    by brianroberts101

Did anyone else think Into the Wild was an uneven, preachy, boring piece of shit, as well? I just knew I was gonna love that movie so I bought it the day it was released, then popped it into the DVD player...Ugh. Emile Hirsch's "acting" consisted of freaking out a lot and those scenes of him just "enjoying life" gave me the douche chills. I'm an environmentalist and I loved the cinematography, but this movie was the big hairy nutsack of the awards season. Plus Sean Penn can't direct his way out of a sack, let alone direct a major motion picture. You all know this is true. Bow before my knowledge. Amen.

mr ahole Ramirez and I’m tired of Japanese characters looking Caucasian in Anime but I’m not going to piss and moan about it.
That’s like the whole retarded whining about the Akira film being played by honkeylips actors. Who cares, it’s based on a film where no one looked Japanese (unless they were) in the first place. If I’m not mistaken, wasn’t the leader of the clown gang out of place in that film or was he Samoan and if he was Samoan he’s still out of place.
The only film where the rule should not be broken is Godzilla. Godzilla is and always will be Japanese.
That and Majin, I mean it would be silly to see white guys in suits slamming a spike into the forehead of a Japanese god although they do it daily don’t they?

“never seen a white guy with black natural hair”
Not to be a dick (because I’m more of a bastard) but what island do you live on bub?
The bottom line is this, when the Japanese make a live action version of any kind of anime it sucks. The story is always too fanboyish even for fanboys, the action is lifted form American movies and spit out 10 times as bad, tag lines and all.
Name 5 decent (not even great) Japanese made Anime to live action films. Man, now that I think of it they even ruined Godzilla, Christ did you even see the last one? It was all dated and Matrix-ee and shit.
Yes I can agree making something like 7 Samurai with a bunch of white dudes is way wrong but something anime like Patlabor, Speed Racer or Mobile Suit Gundam… please, any race could play that.
Hell I’m not even sure how big racing was in Japan back in the 60’s, I know it is now.
Depending on the style of Anime most of the characters look Caucasian in the stories.
Now that I think of it they don’t call them Cauc-asians for nothing.

HAHAHAAHA I love how some dickheads who don't know what they're talking about come in here and comment. What do you think? You think they just took it into photoshop or After Effects and threw some filters on and tweaked the Hue/Saturation? I love how ignorant people think, "It's all done on computers... so it must be easy..." You assholes do realize that they're trying to make it look like an animated toon by using composited still photographs in the background to give it that cartoon-ish vibe, correct? You idiots need to know when something is intentional and when something is badly done. ANd this isn't badly done and looks top notch! If you fucking bothered to read the captions under the pics they spell it out for you and I'm digging it a lot! And even then what they're doing here isn't some easy layer work. If you're hating the Effects work for anything other than 'the style's not doing anything for me' then you are an idiot, FACT!

You don't understand story or narrative if you believe that STAR WARS was the only necessary movie in the Original Trilogy. The STAR WARS TRILOGY is about a Galactic Civil War. The first movie begins with the Rebels having just won their first victory over the Empire and stealing the plans to the Death Star, and the first movie ends with the Rebels dealing the Empire a crippling blow by destroying the Death Star. It is a contained narrative and a brilliant one. But the story continued and ended as is should, with the Rebel Alliance ultimately defeating the Galactic Empire. I'll agree with you on one thing though: The Prequel Trilogy was certainly pointless. On topic, I am intrigued by SPEED RACER. It looks like a mess, but I watched THE MATRIX for the first time in a long time and that movie is ridiculously good. If they can create that kind of quality again..........

One thing I notice is the quality of the CGI goes up each time we see a new shot. The cars in the teaser were very cartoon like while these new shots look more like "real" cars. We should all remember we may of had a Julien Temple version of SR so be happy that didn't happen. All I wanted was some Ninjas and cars jumping on rainy mountain tops and it looks like I will get that and a lot more. I'm in.

I understand story and narrative perfectly that’s why I was able to get all I need to know out of the crawl at the beginning of the movie
(A New Hope). Yes, they did let Darth Vader live at the end which opened it up for a sequel but let’s face it money motivated Lucas to make any movies following the 77 Star Wars film.
The guy makes things up as it suits him and that certainly doesn’t make for great story telling.
    Understand narrative?…please.
It’s a kids fantasy film for Christ sakes, The Wiggles movie had better story and Narrative.

You probably won't end up seeing this, but I'll say it anyway: your answer to my post just makes you look even more ignorant. I kind of feel like I'm trying to explain calculus to a kindergartner. It doesn't matter if the story is about an American organized crime family (THE GODFATHER), the fall of the Old South (GONE WITH THE WIND) or a "kids fantasy movie" (STAR WARS), good narrative structure is good narrative structure. Period. If you don't understand that then you just aren't very smart I guess. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, you have lots of company.

Neither Wachowski has had a sex change. It's been made up by the press to fill the void of the Wachowskis not wanting to talk to the press. Furthermore, even if Larry HAD had a sex change (which he hasn't), that is something PERSONAL, and has absolutely no bearing on the quality of their films. And your insulting Speed Racer fans en masse tells me that YOU are the one who needs to grow up.
