Our First Look At The Trailer For The American Remake Of MY SASSY GIRL?!

Published at:  Mar 28, 2008 5:12:58 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

Unless I’ve somehow missed this earlier, this is indeed the first time we’ve seen footage from this one. I didn’t even realize it was done, much less who’s directing it or who was starring in it.

So this is all sort of shock to the system for me as a fan of the original. It’s a tough film to remake because the original’s not the easiest movie to “like.” It’s good, but the main character is a pretty remarkable asshole, and it’s a tricky thing, making you care about that person.

If Elisha Cuthbert can pull this off, she’ll change her career, and if she doesn’t, the film won’t work. Tall order, if you ask me. Here’s the video and the letter that tipped me off to check it out:

”The original was good, Yann Samuell's "Jeux D'Enfants" was good, so can his remake be good?

Judging from the trailer... maybe it's not going to be so bad. I just hope none of that lousy music is actually in the movie.”

The original Korean movie could have used some editing but it is still one of my all time favorite movies. The two Korean leads do an amazing job and the preview doesn't give me much hope that Cuthbert's performance will be even close to Jeon Ji-hyun's in this role.

    by thatpeterguy

That actually looks like it was done by a director who puts thought into his work. The original wasn't very good but it still had its charm, but in a very Korean way. It looks like they only borrowed the "sassy girl" aspect of it and created their own little story. I'd check it out.

    Maybe it's just the preview...

    by metrogenic

But everything just looks spelled out, flat, and way too slapstick. Could be the song in the background, could be Jesse Bradford's voice...I'll have to wait and see. Not getting my hopes up for this one though.

    NO!

    by aznbuddy

Ever since I heard about the remake, I've had no hopes for this crap. Why "remake"? DO they hope to win over fans of the original Korean version? This film will never touch the tenderness, intimacy or zaniness of the original.Nonononononononononononononononononono! NO!!!

The original is one of the most romantic...

    by topaz4206

movies I have ever seen. When the ending comes, you actually feel love between these two characters, something few movies are able to accomplish during their running time. This remake looks (and sounds) like horseshit. Good day.

Wonder if they'll leave in the time travel...

    by kasch

Seriously, I hate romantic comedies but the original was a wonderful movie that had a lot going on under the surface. That said, they'll probably eliminate the deeper elements (like the time travel stuff) and dumb the whole thing down.

They're not going to put the deep stuff in the trailer

    by themikejonas

So, given that the remake director's the guy who gave us the excellent (and actually rather thematically compatible) "Love Me If You Dare," I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. We've seen good films done an injustice by their trailers before.

    Just to prove my point...

    by themikejonas

Here's the original's real trailer (Splicer's link was to a fan-made one): http://rurl.org/mac Unsubbed, but I'm sure you can tell that none of the "deep stuff" is there.

Was the Original guy so Unlikable?

    by grfrog

Maybe I saw a different translation. Or maybe it's just that I'm a dick myself, and my judgment is clouded because of it.
Either way This looks painfully depressing. The leads just come across as that horrible blandness type that seem to be so popular these days, and the bits they did lift from the original look to be just horrible executed.
So much of the original hinged on cultural context and the age of the leads in that context, Was shoe horning it onto a standard American "hip" late 20's early 30's cookie cutter Romantic comedy really the way to go?

It would be better if they just stole the idea and make a "new" movie, rather than raping the original one. This should apply to all asian "remakes".

    by detective_fingerling

The first bit of music in the trailer is the exact same thing as Muse's song "Starlight", only with a casio keyboard instead of real instruments.

Oh, and this movie looks horrible.
