ScoreKeeper Wants To Tell You About A SuperCool Live Performance Of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Music With Bear McCreary!!

Published at:  Mar 27, 2008 10:12:20 AM CDT

Greetings! ScoreKeeper here sounding the alarm to all fans of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and admirers of its acclaimed composer Bear McCreary.

Next month, on April 13th, at 8:00PM at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, California, Bear will be conducting a one-night only concert performance of his music from BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.

This is truly one of those special events keeping the mantra behind this site’s namesake alive. If you’re a fan of the show and its indelible music and you live anywhere remotely near Los Angeles, you’ll want to mark your calendars and attend this extraordinary event.

Film music isn’t performed live nearly as often as it should and television music performances are virtually non-existent. Here is a great opportunity to hear one of film and television’s rising stars conduct his own music to one of television’s biggest hits performed by the same musicians who perform the scores week in and week out.

Bear led a similar performance last year at a smaller venue. The success of last year’s show coupled with a deafening demand for more appearances by the young composer has led this year’s concert to the much larger and more prestigious Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood.

To spike the punch at the party, there will also be a host of special guest appearances, an exclusive screening of a new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA music documentary, and a CD signing with Bear himself.

Below is the official press release and flyer with all the pertinent information.

You’ll not want to miss this one!

BEAR MCCREARY
THE MUSIC OF BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

A Special One-Night Only Concert Performance of the Music from SCIFI’s
Critically Acclaimed Television Series
Evening Emceed by James Callis

(March 12, 2008- Burbank, CA) – CineMedia Promotions, La-La Land Records, and Battlestar Galactica composer Bear McCreary present a special one night concert performance of the music from the first three seasons of Battlestar Galactica, on April 13th at The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles.

Considered one of the top 10 shows currently on TV, by Time Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, and TV Guide, Battlestar Galactica won the prestigious Peabody Award in 2005. In 2006 in conjunction with the release of the Season 2 soundtrack CD, Bear McCreary and his ensemble performed a special one-night performance of the music of Season 2. The event was a huge success, selling out the venue. This year the event moves to a larger space, the famed Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip.

The performing ensemble, conducted by composer Bear McCreary includes former members of Oingo Boingo and vocalist Brendan “BT4” McCreary, who sings “All Along the Watchtower” from Season 3. An original documentary about the making of the score will also be presented.

James Callis (the show’s Dr. Gaius Baltar) will host the evening. Additional members of the cast and production team will be in attendance.

Co-presenters La-La Land Records has released four soundtrack recordings of the works of composer Bear McCreary: Wrong Turn 2, and the Battlestar Galactica: Season One, Season Two, and Season Three soundtracks.

The evening will also celebrate the 10th Anniversary of CineMedia Promotions, an independent publicity, web and radio promotions firm specializing in film soundtrack and cast album recordings. CineMedia Promotions, founded by Beth Krakower, has promoted all three of the soundtracks for Battlestar Galactica.

Composer Bear McCreary also scores the hit series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and SCI FI Channel’s highest rated series, Eureka. His feature film credits include Wrong Turn 2 and Rest Stop. McCreary was among a handful of select protégés of late film music legend Elmer Bernstein (The Magnificent Seven) and is a classically trained composer with degrees in Composition and Recording Arts from the prestigious USC Thornton School of Music.

    McCreary and Giacchino

    by alliejamison

Oooooohhh. I actually was so fucking close to be in LA that day. Unbelievable. Sounds like an evening of pure bliss. Although I love both shows dearly I must say that I find Bear McCreary's music far superior to Giaccino's score for Lost. Well, it probably seems a bit unfair to compare the two as they both have different concepts with Giacchino employing a sort of minimalistic approach. But his music is getting on my nerves lately. That constant hammering and shattering and bam, bam, bam redundancy of one and the same fucking tone in the same kinds of tense situations. I'm not saying his work on Lost is all bad these days but it's getting not only boring but the score starts to draw too much (negative) attention to itself. Can't wait to watch McCreary's score melt into the new season's imagery next week.

    by jimmy rabbitte

...if the Sci-Fi Channel had managed to air any significant amount of programming, beyond a made-for-t.v.-movie-of-the-week, that they ran almost five months ago.

That's not exactly what can be called "keeping the show in the public eye." I like BSG but Sci-Fi has been slower with new episodes than HBO was with new seasons of The Sopranos; and let's face it, BSG has nowhere near the audience size that The Sopranos had.

    Sci-Fi Channel... worst network ever...

    Comparisons to Giachinno?

    by critch

Please. Mccreary seems incapable of making anything resembling a theme, or much beyond, as said "War Drums and Enya". Not even remotely in the same universe as Lost or Giachinno's skill. There are many reasons to watch Galactica, since it's one of the great sci-fi series of all time. But the music isn't one of them, and a concert just for Galactica seems limited and wasteful. Unless they're going to play the original theme.

I live in Los Angeles. I was WAAAAY excited - I moved out here a year ago and got into visual effects based on the Battlestar Galactica I saw in college - I checked RIGHT AFTER this had been posted. Guess what? There are no tickets to be found. I'd LOVE to go, but no tickets? Apparently this has been around for over a month. I'm sad. :-( And I just got a lens for my fancy camera, too.

Because I refuse to give money to Ticketmaster, I went to the Roxy box office on Tuesday. It sold out two hours before I got there. I put my name on a waiting list, but I'm not holding out much hope. (Considering the "waiting list" was a random piece of paper that I was asked to put my name and information on.)

    critch, you are a fool

    by strabo

I'm saying this as someone who listens to nothing but "classical" (pardon the misnomer) music. Who grew up as a musician, and who almost became one professionally. McCreary's scores for BSG are like nothing that's been on television before. They transcend the medium. Giacchino's music for Lost was decent in the early days of the show. Lately though, it seems that his scores are reaching the realm of self-parody. Giacchino's scores for Lost don't really work if you don't buy into the show. They've become far too farmboy-earnest. I forget which episode it was, but sometime early in the third season there was a scene where several of the characters decided to travel somewhere for some trivial purpose and they started to play Giacchino's now-generic pensive travel music. I felt that the plot of the episode was risible. Hearing this music and seeing a brief travel montage for such a trite plot point actually made me burst out laughing. And not the good kind of laughing. The "I'm laughing at rank fucking amateurs" kind of laughing.

critch, what the hell are you on about?

    by raw_bean

The Cylon theme, the Boomer/Athena theme, Starbuck's theme, Apollo's theme, the Adama father/son theme (though I don't like that pseudo-celtic bit of fluff myself), the absolutely frigging brilliant Opera House/Shape of Things to Come theme, the Six theme and it's inverse for the in-head Baltar, all off the top of my head.Just because he doesn't simply repeat the theme in exactly the same fashion each time he uses it, but adapts, varies, and develops it to fit the specific context, doesn't mean there are easily identifiable and strong themes or motifs in the music. In fact it's better that they're used that way.

As a fan of both Giacchino and McCreary....

    by flickchick85

I have all of Giacchino's scores on CD (minus the video game ones), and all of Bear McCreary's BSG CDs, and while I love them all, I must say, I much prefer the Galactica scores. Honestly, the show doesn't remotely do the music justice, because it's mixed so that the sound effects always cloak the score (w/ the "Watchtower" moment as a rare exception). There actually some gorgeous themes in this show, and I enjoy my BSG scores more than most movie scores. The "Shape of Things to Come," "Roslin and Adama," "Worthy of Survival," Starbuck's theme, and the Starbuck/Apollo love theme are all fantastic and have had beautiful variations throughout the show. It's far more than just "drums and Enya-esque" stuff. Stepping off the soapbox now. I'd definitely be at this concert if only I didn't live on the other side of the country. Thanks for covering this stuff, Scorekeeper. Keep it up!

    McCreary is awesome

    by hoichitheearless

I'd echo the comments that how his music is presented in the show doesn't do it justice. I've listened to the music from Lost and BSG by itself (and it should be noted that these two series stand absolutely ALONE in modern television with regards to the quality and complexity of the musical score). I'm not one of those idiot fanboys who has to knock one work because I like another better, and I have nothing bad to say about the score to Lost. BSG is better, that is all. It's incredibly diverse and inventive in it's instrumentations. How many composers would find a way to combine strings, taiko drums, a tanbur and a zurna in a way that is harmonious? Do not even attempt to argue unless you've actually listened to the music on it's own. I'm flabbergasted to see people hear knocking McCreary. I mean, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I know, but this could be closely tied to the phenomena that allowed enough people to think "The Hottie and the Nottie" was a good idea that it actually saw the light of day.
