Old School Internet Movie Geeks Make Good!! Here Comes An AFTERBURN Movie!!

Published at:  Mar 27, 2008 8:54:59 AM CDT

Merrick here...

"Old School" is often used as a diminutive; I'm using it as more of a respectful characterization...the utmost respect.

I'm talking about two guys here - Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood. They're bigtime genre fans...STAR WARS fans in particular.

Over a decade ago, at about the same time AICN was lumbering into motion, Paul and Scott were running theforce.net - which for many years was one-stop shopping for all things related to STAR WARS fandom.

At some point along the way, Ens was recruited by Lucasfilm to lord over starwars.com (the official Lucasfilm website) while Chitwood continued with his primary, money-earning job. But neither lost their affection for science fiction & fantasy, and both dedicated themselves to telling stories in the genre...mostly because they loved it, wanted to add to it, and wanted to be a part of it.

This resulted in Red 5 Comics, which they co-founded together. And now, it seems, one of their comics is about to be turned into a movie in a big way.

Neal Moritz (THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS films, the xXx films, I AM LEGEND, and TV's PRISON BREAK) and Tobey Maguire are maneuvering to produce AFTERBURN, a Red 5 comic by Chitwood and Ens.

Story begins one year after a solar flare burns half of the planet, when treasure hunters go back the scorched portion to retrieve valuable artifacts.

...says THIS ARTICLE in Variety.

I'm familiar with the road these guys traveled, and am happy to see projects working out for them like this. It's been a long haul for them both...and more power to them.

    I really dig..

    by underoos hero

I really dig it when I read stories about someone who has come up through the trenches and made it in a big way. Especially when they are doing something they like to do. It's very inspiring.

Yea I said something positive. Fuck off.

So, is this comic actually out yet?

    by reel american hero

Or is it just one issue on the stands before getting movie rights as seems to be the thing to do these days.

I have never heard of this for some reason.

    by grammaton cleric binks

It sounds intriguing. I'll have to look it up. For a second I thought it was talking about the Sega video game Afterburner.

Second issue just came out last week.

    by thesecondquest

I'm surprised to see this picked up so quickly. Red 5 Comics has had a few hits with their launch line-up already- Atomic Robo in particular is just all kinds of fun greatness and already has a second series in the works, while Neozoic has been doing pretty good too- I would not be surprised if we get an animated or live action Neozoic show or film in the future at all. Midnight is Incredibles-like (though it's origin predates the Incredibles) and supposedly is going to be an aninated series at some point. And Abyss (by Kevin Rubio of TROOPS and Tag & Bink Are Dead fame) is funny too. Afterburn seemed to me to have gotten lost amongst the other titles in prominence, so to see this picked up so quickly out of all the R5 titles to choose from is somewhat surprising but the first two issues would translate pretty well to the screen.

    by stormwatcher

Unless it has Zombies. Or worse, fast moving Zombies. I love Zombies but not in solar flare Zombie mode. Zmobie, Zombie, Zombie. ZOMBIE BIACH!
