A CrazayCanuk Takes On The DAY OF THE DEAD Remake: "Not the flaming piece of dog shit I expected, but..."

Merrick here...
Yesterday we posted a link to a poster for Steve Miner's remake of DAY OF THE DEAD. You can find more about that HERE. Later, Captain Chad wrote in with an all-around evisceration of the film, which you can read HERE. Now comes CrazayCanuk's look at the project, which is a bit more forgiving assessment of this remake (although it's hardly a glowing review). By the way, CrazayCanuk mentions some confusion about the film already being released in Canada. From what I understand, the film is already available in some parts of the world, but we aren't slated to get it 'till April 8.
Here's CrazayCanuk (keep that screen name in mind for context)...
I just came across your posting about the Day of the Dead remake poster and was a little confused - because it seems either a lot of people know this was out already, or a movie station here in Canada broke street date because I saw it 2 or 3 weeks ago on the satellite. At any rate, here's my simplistic review (2 cents)of this movie since I'm a huge fan of the original and had hoped for something good in this. What the movie did Good: Some of the gore effects were cool, and I enjoyed a majority of the makeup effects. Even though they show a complete deterioration of the infected as soon as they change over, I kind of liked that since there really wasn't enough time that passed throughout the movie that would allow for any real decomposing of the undead. What the movie did Ok: Just some of the set up leading into the infection over running the town. I liked that we saw the early onset of the infection in the town and the way in slowly began to over take the town What the movie did poorly: Staying true to the original. The only real thing that was carried over from the original movie is some of the names, the fact that the military was involved, a half assed "Military Bunker" (which I might add apparently is so poorly guarded that teenagers can just stumble into corridors of this place and fool around), and a doctor and the zombie Bud formerly known as the zombie "Bub" The Lame: Some of the dialogue was so fuckin gay, and a few times the characters said something that I think was supposed to be important...but turns out to be "Complicated". As stated when Suvari's asked why her and her little brother have so much hostility. There was also that time when she was asked why she doesn't carry a loaded weapon...."It's complicated" ...Did i mention the obligatory "I'm a vegetarian" line? ...Uhmm...Kaaaaayy?!? What the hell do we care? Oh....That's why he doesn't attack them or want to eat the survivors. It all makes sense now. Zombies still hold onto their tree huggin' hippie beliefs, apparently. Maybe one day they can be functioning members of society. To sum up the remake of Romero's classic Day of the Dead: Not the flaming piece of dog shit I expected, but far from a great movie. If a stupid lil Zombie romp is what you're looking for, and you have nothing else to do, then I'd say watch it just don't expect too much out of it. If you use this anywhere you can call me "CrazayCanuk"
