A possible MAD MAX 4'

Published at:  May 15, 1999 2:00:00 AM CDT

Alright folks, this came from a fairly damn good British newspaper, and allegedly from George Miller's mouth, so... Who do you think should play MAX if Mel can't or won't do it? Talk Back about it, and I'll take your suggestions for a poll.... My hope would be for Russel Crowe

From the website of UK newspaper the Guardian

"Mad Max goes fourth

Festival juror and Babe director-producer George Miller
has declared his
intention to make a new Mad Max film. Miller hatched the series in 1979 with
the original Mad Max, which
starred Mel Gibson as a police officer fighting against biker gangs in a
dystopian futuristic Australia. The last film to feature the character was
1985's Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Miller intimated that Gibson may not be
returning to his breakthrough character, and that a younger actor might be
considered in the leading role."

regards,

Radge.

Make it the road warror and no max

    by mccready

If they really have to make this movie, leave max alone! Introduce a new road warror, Mel is Max - if you can't afford him, then let Max retire. There's NO WAY anyone else can play him. And that's the bottom line!

    by bob x

You gotta be kidding - Mad Max without Gibson? Oh well, if it HAS to be done i hope they pick someone cool. C.C. is not a bad idea but I still hope they won't do it. At least not as Max - a NEW road warrier i could handle.

    The new Max is...

    by shape

Know this. Hot word down under is that the new Max is going to be played by Heath Ledger.

    Blurb off a website...
Nineteen old Heath Ledger is a newcomer to the United States. In Australia, however, he's anything but new. He's appeared in the feature films Blackrock and Paws. He's been in the drama series Ship to Shore, Sweat and Bush Patrol, and the sitcom Corrigan. His numerous stage credits include Peter Pan, The Name of the Father, Bugsy Malone, Hamlet, Royal Hunt of the Sun and The Boyfriend. I'd say he's had lots of experience;). He played the lead man, Conor, on ABC's summer season show Roar. Unfortunately, Roar has been definitely cancelled. There's been no sign of another network
wanting to pick it up yet, but Heath is set to play the role of Patrick in The Ten Things I Hate About You, an adaptation of
Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Patrick is the Petrucio role. Ten Things is set to release sometime in 1999, so, ladies, if we can wait until then, we'll get to see as much of Heath as we want. He signed the guestbook at a Roar site and stated his birthdate, 4/4/79, and birthplace, Perth, Western Australia.

    NO CHANCE!!!!

    by letseatcheese

Well, everyone else had pretty much said it but you can't have a Mad Max film without Mel Gibson. NO WAY!!! And i won't even condone a new character!!! I'll refuse to watch it and i'm sure thousands more will too. There's no way Mel will do it, from what i know he didn't even want to do the 3rd one. So that's not going to happen. Basically, making this film is a BAD idea. please don't ruin the other 3 by making a completely PAP 4th one!! there's no need for it!! It's just for the purpose of making money, and trust me. This WILL flop without Mel. It will flo so bad in America that it'll come straight to video here in the UK. We don't want to assosciate Mad max with straight to video do we?? So unless by some miracle Mel agrees! Don't Do ITTTTTT!!!!!!! Well, I know George Miller won't read this but there's my advice. Don't come crying to me when you have a flop on your hands. I know my stuff.......

    Max ain't the Problem...

    by seafox

Although I would be HIGHLY skeptical of any Mad Max film without Mel Gibson playing Max Rotterdanski, there is a much bigger concern in my mind...
Mad Max and The Road Warrior were amazing films that didn't deserve Beyond Thunderdome, and the problem with the third film stems directly from George Miller's reading of "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell. After learning of the classic "Hero Cycle" he slammed the Max Rotterdanski character into Campbell's Archetype. Suddenly, an organic process that Miller was doing by instinct became a by-the-numbers telling of the clasic myth cycle, and it didn't flow.
So, how are we gonna manage to brain wipe Miller so that he forgets Campbell's book but doesn't forget all of the really bitchin' stuff that makes him such a cool film maker? Until we fix that problem, It doesn't matter if Barney plays Max......

** FEAR ATTRACTS THE FEARLESS **

    by darth maui

oops sorry about that last blank post! I was going to say that I agree with those of you who say Mel Gibson is the only person for the role. Not only that, but they should keep the future very minimalistic a lot like in the first movie. The second one that all of you loved I didn't embrace to well and the third one was just a heaping pile of shit. If they really do nwant a new actor I guess Russell Crowe would be good, but they could do a spin off, couldn't they? I hate seeing new actors take on roles that were made for other actors. I think George Clooney would make a good Mad Max replacement though I mean you don't necessarily need a 100% Australian actor. Hugo Weaving would make a good villain of sorts and they better not bring back Auntie Entity. So my picks for Mad Max possibilities are... argh forget it. Mel Gibson is the only Mad Max...

    Reply to Talkback

  • I loved everything about that movie, and he definately could pull of Max's coolness. Do you really think this film has a chance of being made though? I think George Miller is still getting over the pain of watching the Babe franchise tank last year. I just hope Mad Max 4 dosent end up like the other sequels over at Corona's Coming Attractions, and just setting on a shelf.

Vincent D'Onofrio is a character actor from a number of movies...he's in the upcoming "The Thirteenth Floor", and he played the walking skinned farmer within a cockroach from Men in Black (which is where most of you probably know him from). He also played Orson Welles in ED WOOD, and the oldest of the Newton Boys. Vincent Gallo was the star of Buffalo 66.

Not only did Seafox give us a pretty astute ananlysis of the first trilogy, but we got some *great* casting as well. Definitely works for me. Barney as Mad Max. A little purple Stubble, leather jacket, lots of weaponry. "I love you, *BLAM* you love me ..." *SLICE* I think I would rather see that, if forced, than that Roar guy.

    Maladjusted Max

    by mrbeaks

I agree with Seafox..... if Miller can't recapture the raw, instinctual storytelling of the first two films, a new MAD MAX is entirely unnecessary. After his (financial only, in my opinion) failure with BABE 2, this strikes me as a slightly pannicky move on Miller's part, and not unlike, say, Blake Edwards' continued attempts to revitalize the PINK PANTHER franchise. Besides, the whole post-apocalyptic genre has become pretty tired as of late. Hell, I could've sworn I heard it's death knell when WATERWORLD opened (maybe that bell doth tolled for Costner. Who knows?) Regardless, I hate to say this, but we *really* don't need another hero (ugh, do I feel filthy for that one.)

    Maybe A Prequel?

    by iwiwcn

Hey quentin2 I heard that the rights to MAD MAX recently became the property of Warner Bros. So we may be looking at a digitally remastered, multiple-language version soon.
If we could only be so lucky.

On to other things. THE ROAD WARRIOR is my absolute favorite movie of all time. While I demand that Mel return as Max (maybe as a law enforcement type in a world that is trying to put itself back together again, the possibilites are endless!), the ever so hip word PREQUEL may rear it's head. Imagine a bad ass action flick with the most wicked car chases ever (MAD MAX with a real budget). I even would not have any trouble with Mel returning to play a Pre-MAD MAX Max.
We will just have to wait and see what the spies can dig up.

    what about the cars

    by rebellion

The problem with doing a mad max 4 is the cars, one of the most important components. If it's a straight sequel then I assume it'll be more turgid VW kit car buggies covered in sand (as in thunderdome). However if by any luck the decision is made to go back to the unique style of the original or even the definative style of the 'road warrior', then they are going to need cool cars.

They are going to have a hard time getting hold of austrialian ford falcon XB's (the V8 interceptor base) to trash this time around.

I can't see the same atmosphere being held in a forth movie. Also, just to make a quick point. Mad max wasn't set post apocolypse. It was set during a massive economic depression and oil shortage. Mad max 2 continued that theme but became more extreme (and more debateable) Only by mad max 3 had an 'apocolypse' taken place. This was due to the studios wanting to explain the background more obviously. It's easier to say, society blew itself up than say due to complex economic situations... and as someone pointed out, it provided a more impressive backdrop to the 'hero cycle' that miller adopted with that tribe of 747 worshiping kids. In my opinion Max has already been tainted by 3.
I can't see how they can redress the balance with a 4th one. After 'waterworld' and equally dire kostner vehicle, 'the postman' (David Brin should be rotating in his alive bed) I can't stomach another 'the one' leads tribe to 'promised land'
    movie.

If they have to try then... A new road warrior, set just after the first, before the second, with more V8 interceptors. The story of how society decayed between 1 and 2 is potentially an interesting one.

oh, btw, I'm new here, this is my first post. Nice to meet you all.

    Russel Crowe

    by the consul

I think the most important thing if millers going to make another Mad Max film is not to let the yanks get their stinkin paws anywhere near it. They fuck up everything they come into contact with. (Not all Americans by any means.)
Max is an icon. We cant afford to have him fucked up like Dr Who.
Incidently if Mel is too old to play his old rugged self maybe he could play a secondary character. King max. Mel Gibson is an asshole anyway. I agree That russel crowe should play a character. Not Max though. In Beyond thunderdome we saw the begginings of some interesting civilisations. Maybe Max should be made a god in the eyes of the masses and Crowe could play a Max like role overthrowing Gibson.

the trilogy to me is over, lets not kill it, with a contrived film

    Re: Rebellion, Re: Consul

    by uncle monty

Firstly, I say no more Max. I'm doing all I can to get Thunderdome out of my mind. Having said this, I offer some arguments to the suggestions of Gibson replacements : Clooney? No. Much as I am a big fan of his, he's just not bad enough - too charming, and not able to contain it. Heath Ledger? Not ready for such an important role (and one which carries such high expectations from it's audience) as this. I am Australian, and I have seen most of Heath's work (even doing a couple of days work on Roar as an extra; nice guy). He continues to learn and improve with everything he does, but isn't ready for Max. Russel Crowe? He is the closest match to what Gibson had in 1&2, certainly. And then, of course, we have actors here whom no-one will have heard of, but no point in going into that here.

For Rebellion - There are still plenty of XB Falcons in good condition cruising around this country, no problems finding them!

Consul - Mel Gibson was born in Southern New York State (the town of Poughkeepsie, I think, though I could be mistaken), and moved to Australia at an early age.

If George Miller really felt the need for a fourth installment in the world of Mad Max, and he can't get Mel Gibson, the least he can do is pick up on one of the other plot that were kind of left hanging. What about following the Gyrocap or the Feral Kid? What ever became of the large groups of people from the ends of the 2nd and 3rd movies? What's going on with their lives? I love the Mad Max's dearly and would not want them to become The Crow Part 2 or Blues Brothers 2000.

A while back some fellow traveler accused me of being nothing short but a stark, raving Brian DePalma fan. That has forced to me re-evaluate certain aspects of my life. For example, why just bow down in a gross, submissive manner at the feet of the man who brought the world THE PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, SCARFACE, BLOW OUT, and THE UNTOUCHABLES ?!? That's not even the topic. The only way a fourth movie would work, after careful thought and analysis, is to make this film as "audience friendly" as possible. In other words; wall-to-wall action, several people dying in a grosteque (sic) manner, stupendous car chases involving strange vehicles traveling high speeds, and bizarre characters.

3rdly, I still think the idea of a Mad Max film without Mel Gibson sucks bollocks!! And should NEVER be done unless he's in it, and even then it wouldn't live up to the first 2.
4thly, whoever had the idea about the prequel. Sorry but that would be even shitter. Max wasn't even mad before the end of the first one so whats the point of having a film about a family man who goes to work to be a copper every day?? If they are going to do another mad max film without Max \ Mel Gibson they should be heading to the aspect of its the same timeline \ same place where the previous one left off.. the airplane tribesman built a city of a ruined city now they have a problem because a gang of bad guys came accross it and took it over a few straglers escaped found a pseudo mad max mistake him for the mad max that saved them hence .. he isn't max but they call him it anyway (confusing plot twist works for australian movies..). It would be Road Warrior 2000. possible people to play this pseudo mad max could be Brendon Frasier, Michael Bein, Kevin Sorbo? I dont think they should make this movie a huge budget. As for Michael Biehn taking over he is the best we have got out their he is a rogue doesnt anyone remember his ass kicking in "The Terminator" or what. He has a rogue attitude and is the best of the replacement bunch but mel is still number 1 as mad max. Also If a replacement is done make them a new character NOT mad max keep the theme the same George Miller and all will go well. This is The Big T signing out.

GEORGE MILLER: You must get Mel Gibson or NO MOVIE!!!!!

    by quentin2

Once again, I must say it: NO MEL, no mad max 4. IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT. And here's a message to George Miller: George, I know you mean well, but FUCK A YOUNGER ACTOR!!! Man, you NEED Mel! I don't care what you have to do to get him! GET HIM! Suck his fucking cock if you have to (ala Tommy Terror), but YOU BETTER GET MEL GIBSON!!!!!!! Don't fuck this up, George.

    Why make more Max?

    by hiro protagonist

While I agree that Mel is the only person who can play Max, perhaps the series should just be allowed to die with some degree of dignity. Miller really should have ended it with The Road Warrior and spared audiences the horror of Beyond Thunderdome. Just thinking about Tina Turner's poofy hair or that midget ranting "Who run Bartertown?" sends chills down my spine. A sequel simply set in the universe of the primary character is also a bad concept. Max is an integral component of the franchise. Let's be realistic--nobody watches Bond films just for tales about MI6 or The Highlander for a bunch of immortals playing with sharp objects (a little hint to whoever thought "The Raven" was a good idea).

    who needs it?

    by jetalone

Lame idea. Still, I will watch ANYTHING with Russell Crowe. The man is breathtakingly talented. But I doubt this film will get off the ground. At least, I hope it doesn't. Why not just re-release Road Warrior? God, I love that movie. It beats the first one, and certainly the sequel, all to hell. Anyway, what's up with all you Mel purists? He's no great shakes, if you ask me. Well, I liked him in Gallipoli, and I really, really liked the scene in Mad Max where he was in the kitchen, and wearing those tight leather pants, and...*slobber*

    Mr. B Natural,

    by sandy

you're absolutely right. The first one was a break-through, it's kindof an excercise in strengthening your eye lids these days but it did its job all the same. The second (which the Americans rudely decided to give the obsene name of "The Road Warrior") is a pure classic. There is no choice but to love that film. The third one may not be quite so conceptually perfect as the second but it's still great. And why? Because of Miller. I personally would be happy with Crowe, but the point is, Miller won't fuck this up. Relaxxxxxx...

    Mad Max 4

    by bigbear

I think the actor should be Wesley Snipes. He looked magnificent in Blade and he is the choice in the whole galaxy.

    New Blood

    by dh

Mad Max 4 is a bad idea, however if it has to be, then a new actor to replace tired Mel would be a good idea.
The same applies to Alien, Sigourney Weaver's great, but she drags the series down, it's all too samey.I want too see something new in every sequel. New blood is needed to revitalize any flagging series.

    Doesn't Work Anymore

    by clarkgoble

I just can't see Mad Max working anymore. The reason it worked back in the 80's was the near universal angst over nuclear war. That doesn't exist anymore. No one really fears the Apocalypse. That (among many other problems) was the what was wrong with Dances with Max. . .er The Postman. If they do decide to go for it anyway (and hasn't the genre been done to death?) then they need someone silent and brooding the way Max was in the original films.

Who should play Max? Here's one

    by captain avatar

First I think that the new Mad Max should be the little kid from Mad Max II: The Road Warrior. There is already a lead in in the form of the way that movie ended with the kid talking about Max. Also, the kid could have seen Max as a hero and followed in his footsteps when he grew up. As far as who should play him...hmmm...I personally would like to see a no name actor that is really good at stunts and such. It would be nice to see someone that has not done movies before or at least minor roles in small films.

    Later, Captain Avatar

    Mad Max vs Godard

    by kinghell

Okay, I'm just as big a film snob as most of you, but come the hell on, I know where to go to get Godard, and I know where to get Mad Max. Any film will be welcome, so long as Miller is at the helms and Mel is THE STAR. P-e-r-i-o-d! yea, The 3rd film was the weak link of all three, but I still liked it. But to go as far and call it what I've been reading here....come on, its a masterpiece next to more than half the crap out there today...here's to a better age! Viva Max!
