MONSTER SQUAD on Blu Ray? NIGHT OF THE CREEPS on DVD? Read How To Make It Happen!!!

Hey folks, Harry here - Getting MONSTER SQUAD on Blu Ray would be nice, but not as nice as just getting a NIGHT OF THE CREEPS release with that original ending that Dekker talks about below. Here's info from the New Beverly screening in Hollywood last night... Enjoy...

Hey Harry, Last night the New Beverly in Hollywood, CA ran a double feature of Fred Dekker's The Monster Squad and Night of the Creeps. Fred Dekker was present for a between show Q&A. Shane Black was also there but wasn't involved in the interview. On a side note, while waiting in line for the men's room Seth Green was talking to the box office cashier. I didn't know the guy was a midget. The Beverly sold out, I know it had sold out many shows before but this was the first time I was ever there when it did. The Bev was able to acquire a 35mm print of Monster Squad. When the American Cinematheque ran it last July they ran a projection of the DVD. This was the first time I saw it on film since opening day back in '87; it looked great. Also, Night of the Creeps was presented in 35mm and the print looked great. It was the first time I saw it, I wasn't the only one, in the theatre. Here are just some random tidbits from the Q&A. -Andre Gower couldn't make it; however his sister and mother were there. -Julia, box cashier and moderator, asked why we never saw "wolf-dork" in the film. Sean said that the wolfman had to wear pants back in the 40s because he couldn't show his wolf-dork. Jules asked since the film was in 80s why we never saw it. Dekker said yeah even when he pulled himself back together at the end he had his pants on...hmmm. He just said well maybe Benicio will show his wolf-dork. -Dekker hates Robocop 3. -For Night of the Creeps, he prefers the alternate ending and not the theatrical ending. -He says he's over the horror genre. We've seen everything so there really isn't anything left to be afraid of. He's not too keen on remakes. He doesn't really feel the need to turn the Squad into a tv series, make a sequel or remake it. It's been done, move on. He thinks Zach Snyder is a talented and terrific filmmaker but did we really need Dawn of the Dead. He said more people are aware of that then Romero's original classic. -He has a number of projects in the works. He's producing a tv pilot "The Genie Chronicles" and will be directing a drama, something music related. -He mentioned that when the film opened it was normal to jump in a limo and go to theatres opening weekend to check out business. Squad was depressing. They never did it for Creeps. The last several screenings of the Squad was very moving for him. He compared the Beverly audience to the Alamo audience, the only difference was you could drink there. Of course, someone in the aud raises a beer to much applause. -Fred said Night of the Creeps is being dragged by Sony, hence no DVD release. If we want it on DVD, send a letter to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment with a brick. After receiving all those bricks they have to release it to stop the deliveries. After seeing the film, I gotta wonder if the music rights issues is the reason for the hold up. There are a number of classic songs in there. -If people were wondering why Shane Black wasn't on the DVD it was because he never returned his phone calls. -Lionsgate wants to do a Blu-ray release of the film. They just weren't sure if anyone would want it because they already released a full bells and whistles version on DVD. The plan is to have a running video commentary with Fred Dekker and Shane Black. It's on the table, they just have to sign the deal. My two cents, I never bought the new DVD because I wanted to wait and see if it would come out on Blu-ray. As for the video commentary, they should do four video commentaries. One with the filmmakers, Fred and Shane. One with the kids. One with the monsters. One with the creature and visual effects artists. They could even do it Goonies style and have all the kids, Fred and Shane together. That about sums it up. filmmaven

    re the Monster Squad DVD:

    by DocPazuzu

I bought it to show my support and thought the extras were great, but the picture quality of the film was sub-par. This is particularly annoying since there is a DVD version floating around the internets which was made from an HD broadcast which is almost absurdly better looking than the official release. It is truly sad when fans start putting together better mastered DVDs than the studios do. <p> There's also a HD Night of the Creeps out there too as well as one with both endings. Let's hope the official release looks better than Monster Squad.

Hey skywalkerfamily if you're being sarcastic than you've never been to the New Beverly because Julia kicks ass as a moderator and knows more about movies than you can ever hope to. She is very, very cool. Don't criticize what you don't know. So there douche! The New Beverly Cinema is the greatest movie theatre on earth. Last nights Squad/Creeps show was incredible. I hope as a result Creeps gets a dvd release because it truly deserves it.

"Night of the Creeps" was actually on cable a few days ago. I watched it, of course, and it was as awesome as I had remembered. A DVD release is needed. I love my DVD for "The Monster Squad." I don't own a Blu-Ray, but it be sweet to see a flm like this in HD.

    DocPazuzu and the Mysterious Yobo

    by Paul Bucciarelli

Great title for a pulp novel. Doc (love your handle by the way): How old do you think this Yobo kid (along with Skywalker Family) is? Like a lot of other teenage blowhards on this site he talks a bunch of shit (and it is SHIT not SHITE in this country. If you're posting from Ireland, feel free to use shite but anyone else, please give it a rest)about things that he hasn't a clue about. I called him on his pissy rant on how anyone wanting to be a producer was talentless scum and he shut up real quick. I asked him if he was ever on a film set or a production office ane never heard a peep. At least he's not doing his usual attack on Harry.

favorite line from "monster squad" not about werewolf testicles

    by Toe Jam

it's the part later in the movie where dracula is standing outside a house holding dynamite and the cops are about to engage him in a standoff, and one of the officers uses his radio and says, "dispatch, we have a 328! we need back-up!" (or something to that effect). was watching it with a bunch of drunk friends a few months ago, and that line just made us all howl with laughter. the notion that code 328 meant "vampire menacing civilian household with explosives" became a running joke among us. that said, have absolutely loved "monster squad" since i first watched it with all my friends at my 10th (or was it 9th?) birthday party and would kill to have a blu-ray dvd i could play on my newly purchased ps3.

"Except you can't drink" (which prompted some dude near the front to raise a beer he had smuggled in, so I guess you "can"). And agree on Julia the moderator/ticket seller/whatever else needs to be done girl, she knows her shit. Which is surprisingly rare in LA; most of the ushers at other theaters are complete dolts. New Bev rules. And Dekker was a great guest, honest and informative. Best 7 bucks I spent all week.

So why avoid the question? What is your job? As to what Kevin eats. Why don't you ask him. Oh wait, I forgot. You don't work on movies. You just write tear apart other people's work with your snarky posts instead of actually writing a sellable screenplay. Y'know. Like Kevin Smith did.

    by Paul Bucciarelli

That's strange because I've never heard anybody that I've ever worked with refer to them as suits. A whole bunch of other less flattering names but never suits. As for their contributions, if you think that all they do is completely fuck up some artiste's vision with their money-grubbing ways, then again you have no idea of what you're talking about. Again, I ask you guys: What do you do for a living and how old are you? For the record, I don't know Kevin Smith. If you call being speaking directly to somebody once or twice and then never having another word of conversation with them ever again as "knowing them" then I guess that I know him.

DocP: a good read from Fred Dekker

by SpencerTrilby <p> The guy sounds like a really decent guy indeed. I remember a Shane Black interview about 10 years ago where he praised Dekker for being a talented, down to earth dude who got really disgusted and lost his mojo due to the RoboCop 3 debacle. Sad. <p> I mean, RoboCop 3 was a mess, but I re-watched it last month in a RoboCop marathon (while I was homesick - explains a lot) and it was not as terrible as I remembered (RoboCop 2 is also much better than some say IMHO). And the first one kicks so much ass that I can't wait for the Topkapi Affair to be a smash hit (hopefully) so Vehoeven is bankable again and is given the bidget he wanted to make a fourth installment a few years ago - Neumeier even wrote a treatment. THAT would be cool. Hear this, Sony? It's Verhoeven or bust!

  • Jesus, that would be so cool. Come on Shane, make it happen and give us some golden info nuggets!

  • March 23, 2008, 11:48 a.m. CST

I had fond memories of Monster Squad...

    by ZeroCorpse

And then I re-watched it as an adult. Hoo-boy! That was a mistake! It's not very good! <p> Sure, it was cool when I was young and naive, but now? Now it holds up terribly. It's silly and badly-scripted. It plays off like a "Goonies" wannabe that isn't anywhere near "Goonies" quality. I'm sad to say it, but "Monster Squad" is Not For Me anymore. <p> Is it a decent kids' movie? Yes, as long as you're in a fairly liberal household and don't mind a few curse words and scares. Is it meant for adults? Nope. Not unless they're mentally disabled. <p> I showed this DVD to another adult, telling them it was "a great movie", and as we sat through it, my sense of embarrassment grew. At the end of it, I had to apologize for subjecting them to "Monster Squad" because the reality sure as fuck didn't live up to the memory of this movie. <p> So you'll forgive me if I don't have "Monster Squad" in my DVD library, but I do have "Dawn of the Dead (2004)" in my collection. I'm sorry, but the guy who made "Monster Squad" questioning the quality or right-to-exist of "Dawn of the Dead (2004)" is just downright ludicrous. One made a "Goonies" rip-off with Universal Monsters in it, and the other made a "Dawn of the Dead" remake with some interesting new twists on the genre, a lot of gore, and conversations that get above the level of "Wolfman has nards." <p> I used to love (LOVE) "Monster Squad", and now I just sort of wish I could forget about it.

Is one of the alltime classic 80s horror films, which deserves its own genre (80s horror films that is). This film needs to come out with both endings available on the DVD, along with every other special feature imaginable for making us wait this long. SONY can suck a cow nut for keeping all us fans from having it on DVD. I have to watch my old vhs copy or wait for it to come on tv to watch it these days. THAT'S NOT ENOUGH. It's Miller Time, and it's time to step up to the plate and give this classic the release it deserves!!! I've been tooting this horn for years. Amazon has a veritible talkback in it's feedback for vhs availability. Same for IMDB.
