CBS Cancels JERICHO!! Again!!

Published at:  Mar 21, 2008 3:27:49 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Producers created two endings for “Jericho’s” second-season finale – a cliffhanger and a not-cliffhanger – and it looks like they’ll be using the not-cliffhanger on Tuesday.

Ratings for season two are even lower than the season one ratings that precipitated the show's first cancellation.

Will Robert Hawkins’ bomb finally wipe the last little bit of Kansas off the map for good?

"Wungolioth" posted this in the talkback below:

I guess we have to wait to see what the last line is in the last episode to see what the Jerico fans send to CBS. If the producers had some brains, they might work something into the script that they really want, like a wide screen plasma TV.

How's this for Jake's final line? "Daniel Benzali's character, we will come after you like a fleet of Jaguars!!"

Brace yourself for the “Save Jericho 2008” campaign and read the Hollywood Reporter’s story on the show’s cancellation here.

So much for saving the show, huh?

Jericho was okay but I kinda wish everyone hadn't gone to the wall for such a so-so show. In a year when they cancelled Veronica Mars, there was at least one far superior show that was worth saving ahead of Jericho.

What's worse is that this probably will put the boot into any revival efforts for other shows. Networks will ask themselves, what's the point of bringing a show back if folk don't watch?

So well done, Jericho fans. Kudos.

Yet again, CBS gives me a reason to stop watching their network. Jericho was the only show on the network that I even remotely gave 2 shits about so now that it's gone I can finally say bye-bye to the channel. If Sci-fi channel had any sense whatsoever they would pick up this show, but with critical gems like Flash Gordon and Who Wants To Be A Superhero why bother right?

its a fun little show but im not going to cry at it's cancellation - it never really found it's feet in terms of a style or consistent feel, it's wildly veered from small-town drama to action show and back without ever being great at either and this season has definitely dropped the heart of the earlier episodes in favor of action. It hasnt worked and as long as we wrap up the next episode with at last a half-finished story I will be happy...

I imagine we will get some sort widespread rebellion of the new Cheyenne government and we leave the characters as they witness the start of the next Civil War.

    by the kosh

CBS has wanted this show gone since they did the midseason hiatus that pitted it against American Idol, then moving to the 9/10:00 hour made it difficult for the FAMILIES who got together to watch the show at such a late hour. Then sites like AICN wouldn't even cover the show in the 2nd season which at only 7 episodes packed a helluva emotional wallop. Like the passing of Arthur C. Clarke the age of superior drama on Television is over. Bring on the "I'd Buy That For A Dollar" guy cause that's going to be all that Network TV will be soon enough. May the evil Eye of CBS soon fall like the Eye of Mordor.

It's tough to criticize when they win the ratings race so consistently, but it's hard to imagine a more boring prime time line up. Jericho (though not perfect) was the one bright spot on that network. Chances are we'll see it replaced with another procedural or a pair of 3 camera sitcoms.

    by fiester

No one watched it. If people cared and liked this show half as much as some folks would have us believe rating would surely have increased, not completely bottomed out. But a larger issue is this: Network television is not longer a place to look for quality of unique programming. I'm not suggesting Jericho was either of those two things, but it aspired to be--all these three factors combined to make it a DOA for a Network show.

I basically caught up with the first season and have watched all of this one. The problem with the first season is that I don't think it knew where it was going. It was either a conspiracy show like 24. Or it became a soap opera about a town dealing with a nuclear attack. If it had been a one track show, perhaps dealing with the town, it might have been better.

    by spastic jedi

I liked this show during Season 1. They did a lot of cool stuff that showed you want to do and what not to do if that particular situation ever really happened. It also was the only show besides 24 to have a slant in the Right direction opposed to the Left.

As a fan, I was glad it came back, but it has just been one big political statement against Bush and America.

    J&R = Haliburton

Cheyenne Government, in Wyoming, Dick Cheney's home state.

    by darkhawkprime

Some will say "You screwed up, it was only on for 2 seasons!". I feel the first half of season one is season one. Then CBS fucked the show by taking it off air for 3 months, the same as some shows take off between seasons during the summer. Then season two(for me) came back against Idol. The story got better, but it like the tree falling the empty forest. The show gets shit canned. The Nuts rise up and we get season three. So if you think of Jericho as getting 3 seasons it's a little easier to swallow.

    No More Protests, I'm Done

    by supershadow

I was really pulling for Jericho. I enjoyed the first season for its characters, and home town/family feel, community bonding, and heart. During the first boycott, people were expressing how patriotic the show was, or how it depicted the Christian faith with respect. It also had a strong appeal to families. I was drawn to the Green family of the show. I liked the rebellious son reconciling with his family, the father and mother relationship, the high school sweetheart. It had a good formula, and it was a decent and entertaining show. The conspiracies were okay, but I think that main point of the show was how the town/community came together to survive.

Immediately after watching the first episode of the new season, I knew it lost all the appeal of the first season. The focus was no longer on the Green family, even the mom was nowhere to be found. The town was overrun by the military, and we were introduced to a new government, and the conspiracy story took center stage. It didn’t make sense to me how they would totally abandon the first season’s formula.

The low budget production didn’t help much either. The show de-evolved to focus on Jake Green and Robert Hawkins and the head of the military dude (I forget his name). What a waste. I think it was over before the second season even started. No more Jericho, good riddance.

    by forget_byron

Nielsen means dick and everyone with an ounce of intelligence knows it. The modern viewer doesn't watch television live; they download off the internet or record it for later. What strikes me funniest is that networks did this to themselves but don't want to acknowledge the impact. Here, we put this episode on our website so you can watch it, but why aren't you watching it on television live?? Derrrr!!!
I recently realized how stupid the network execs are about this sort of thing while watching the Stargate Atlantis panel from ComicCon in CA where an executive actually told the audience NOT to Tivo the show if they want to keep it on the air. ROFLMFAO.
So in other words the viewer is expected to keep doing things in the traditional way and pretend like new technology doesn't exist rather than the networks WAKE UP and join the rest of us in the new world. Bitches!

The characters were written as morons
There's not a single hot girl (except the little teen girl, but she's too young to get naked)

This shows why you need to spend time watching the shows you like during the time they air. The networks don't look at anything, but the ratings of when it aired. CBS even said they looked at the amount of downloads on ITunes and the usage of DVRs, but at the end of the day, people just didn't watch it during the timeslot.

Lets see what game or reality show replaces Jericho. The sad thing is it will do a better rating.

    Jericho shot on HD video...

    by prof. pop-cult

I think it was always shot on HD video, except for its pilot. Don't quote me on that, but I think the information is out there on the Web in an article about its production process.

No, it doesn't mean fans walked away...

    by sledge hammer

...it just means Nielsen Families walked away, even more so than before. But then Nielsen ratings are down on most shows since the end of the strike...It never ceases to amaze me that the archaic Nielsen ratings are still used to judge what gets cancelled and what doesn't, especially when it's a system that's never been exactly known for it's viewer diversity, despite all the hype to the contrary. All that said, Jericho being cancelled again is hardly a surprise, despite being better than most anything else of CBS these days. Hope it finds a hope elsewhere, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

    Inconsistent tone

    by grammatoncleric

I agree with most of the posters on the talkback. It wasn't a great show by any means, but I did watch it from the beginning based on one of Herc's "best of" lists at the beginning of the season. It seemed like a cool premise, with weighty themes, and I am a sucker for postapocalyptic stories. But the style and tone were all over the map. For every action scene and military stand-off, there was like a Hallmark movie of the week moment. The Grandpa "flashback" in last week's episode was painful in that respect, and it was during that sequence that I knew it was the beginning of the end. Plus the continuing escalating conspiracy grew wearisome. I hope to see another post-nuclear show again, but hopefully the tone will play more stark and grim and feature less community barbecues.

    by thelastcleric

I get that some of you will watch anything with a pussy attatched to it but since you want to compare the two, Jericho was the better show by far. I've never understood the boner people got over VM and I never will, nor do I get the mentality of people who talk shit on Jericho, which was actually improving with every episode, while singing the virtues of shows like LOST and Heroes. And your logic that Jericho fans ruined any future attempts to bring other shows back is fucking retarded.

    by thelastcleric

It's cool if you don't like Jericho but please don't come into this talkback and act like your taste is superior while watching a cryptic shitfest like LOST or a bloated, tedious and meandering mess like Heroes or BSG. Perhaps if you were coming in here and comparing Jericho to something like Dexter or The Shield I could at least understand your position in regards to quality, even if I disagreed. However, most of you shit talkers seem to think shows like Veronica Mars and Supernatural represent the apex of the medium so excuse the fuck out of me while I point and laugh. Jericho was a pretty damn solid show and it certainly had more going for it than Gilligan's Island meets the X-Files or Unbreakable: The Inferior TV Version. a.k.a Heroes. Even assuming you hate the show, many of us liked it quite a bit and it sucks that's it's being cancelled...again. Seriously, what kind of asshole comes into this thread and celebrates the end of a show he never cared about to begin with? Go finger-fuck a first cousin and leave the fans to mourn, dickwads.

I couldn't get through the first season.

    by thelastcleric

I sensed what the show was from the beginning but I tried to watch regardless. Most people I know who started off loving the show seem to have reached the same conclusion as I, just much further down the road. I generally stay off the topic because I know people really love the show and I don't begrudge anybody their passion but if people want to start taking swipes at other shows I really don't feel the need to pull my punches. I'm really not trying to be a dick here because I can understand why people like it but in my opinion, based on what I've seen, it's leagues behind the quality of something like The Shield, The wire, or even the Tudors. Perhaps one day I'll give it another try but honestly, the first season annoyed the shit out of me. Sorry to offend you personally, because it's not like this show is an idiot magnet like American Idol. I just think it's overrated.

    The Second season was better.

    by dpc01

I had watched the show during it's first season, but primarily because I found the general situation interesting. The soap opera romantic entanglements were very dull filler that I started to scan over, and that's pretty rare for me. But the short second season was much better paced, and the death of a character I had previously thought of as uninteresting was rather affecting, even Whedon-like in it's unexpectedness. So I'm disappointed - the show was getting somewhere.

    by pizza the hut

Yeah, but that was 6 years after CBS canned it. CBS would not allow a proper ending at all, and left everyone hanging, after spending 5 years building up to a Banner - McGee series finale which never happened. The original plan was to have the Banner - McGee conflit resolved at the end of the 5th season. TPTB and NBC completely ruined the reunion movies that aired 6 years later. Kenneth Johnson was no longer involved. Because Bill Bixby took over as exec producer of the movies, it was never resolved, angering many die-hard fans to this day.

I'm actually curious as to what'll happen if McCain, a warmongerer whose admitted to knowing jackshit about economics and wanting to bomb Iran for no fucking reason, becomes president. I was always a big fan of those Fallout games I think if he won I could finally live out my post nuclear fantasies. Yes, read it if you get the chance. Whatever you feel about the ending, it is definitely worth the experience. The movie is good too, but it clocks in at 6 hours. The book is vastly more detailed, if you can imagine that. As for the ending, it is pretty much a typical King ending. Worth the ride, though, IMHO. Probably my favorite of all of King's work, next to The Talisman.

    Great first Season..

    by ceejaynightwing

But the second season production values sunk well below the quality it had set before. Blame the initial canceling of the show for certain characters not being able to return in time to shoot scenes originally intended. Blame the initial canceling of the show and the writers strike for rushed and desperate to please scripts this seasons that delivered too much incident and not enough breathing room for the characters. Blame the Internet leak of the first three episodes before they had a chance to air, this meant the first three weeks of this show didn't register a blip on the airwaves. And finally blame CBS for initially promising this show two seasons, going back on that promise and canceling the show forcing them to play to the fans by killing of an important main character at the end of Season One. This character was missed sorely in the second season and CBS with all their money put very little into production of this second season as well as giving it a timeslot to sink into rating hells. Basically everyone who wanted to see Jehrico, downloaded the show at their conveinience rather than be asked to deal with the crazy timeslot and Downloads don't equate to viewing figures in the slow-on-the-uptake world of film and TV ratings who literally are still using stone-age methods to decide what we like to watch. In the foreseeable future every prime-time reality TV show will dominate over every drama becasue all the housewives and teens want to watch this crap live and deal with their backlog of downloaded TV later. I think the studio heads at CBS,ABC, NBC, FOX and CW need to get computers, Utorrent and step into the A.M! Goodbye Jehrico, hope the ending is as satisfying as Journeyman.

Jericho has been consistently good throughout the entire second season and while you made a half-assed effort when the season first AIRED we've heard dick from you since - until THIS...??
So who is this Nielsen guy and why do the networks care so much what he rates? Nobody's ever asked me a goddamm thing about what I'm watching in my entire life - including this Nielsen dude - and like other people have already pointed out - a lot of us are watching our TV when it's convenient for US and not some dickhead network programmer making his best guess about when's a good time to air something...
Anyhow, BSG taught the networks a lesson - listen to your fans when they have something to tell you - and hopefully this show will teach them something too - look at a BIGGER fucking picture than some silly antiquated ratings system with it's ridiculous "sweeps" seasons and other eccentricities!

World War II had widespread popular support, Iraq doesn't (again, because one was just, the other isn't). There is NOTHING, repeat NOTHING in common between Iraq now and Germany and Japan at the end of World War II. The only way it could interest me now is if we find out its a Star Trek show and all the crew are having some mad holo fantasy.

    by zom-bot.com

i was a 'neilsen family' this year and i made sure to put down every time i watched jericho on cbs or in marathon on sci-fi.
it just really sucks that channels go by such outdated systems as 'ratings' when, like someone above said, you got tivo and online and so many other ways to watch tv now.
plus, it's hard to get sponsership and product placements in a show where society doesn't produce cokes or new cars or clothes anymore.
    RIP, JERICHO. before your time.

    People who tivo or bit-torrent a show . . .

    by wickedjacob

People who tivo or bit-torrent a show and then complain that the ratings don't count them are stupid. Ratings aren't about who is actually watching the show -- its about who is watching the commercial that pay for the show. If you are viewing a show in a form that skips the commercials, don't be surprised when the networks don't want to hear from you. Because you don't make them money. I avoid commercials whenever possible too, but I realize that makes me less important to the people who finance the shows I like. The difference is, I don't expect them to like me.

    Reply to Talkback

  • of course, not talking about a violent uprising -- that would be short-lived although interesting. The modern ratings system is broke, it is missing so many factors -- those who download legally, those who download illegally (because they are in a country that streaming is 'unavailable'), DVD sales -- it is near pointless to use Neilson as-is any more. How many people do you all know who wait for the season to end, so they can watch the whole thing in a day? I would say, most people.

Also, I don't care what the ratings people think, 8.1 million viewers is still a lot of people. For a mid-season replacement, at that. If 1% of all those people did something revolutionary, then maybe some executives might stop to think about 8.1 million+ fans as being an asset worth keeping.

REVOLUTION is needed in TV. For shows like this, Firefly, Journeyman, and so on. Science fiction fans are supposed to be intelligent, I think 8 million of them together could come up with something beneficial for the fans, producers, cast & crew, AND the networks. It can't be about Fans VS Networks, the people won't win that fight. It's got to be something that gives all parties what they need.

What kind of ideas do y'all have?

How about a Jericho mini-series or some made-for-cable movies on Sci-Fi? It would beat the hell out of 'Mansquito' and those other lame movies that Sci-Fi produces now.

Once again the Nielsen dinosaur devours another life!
I loved Jericho but their problem was having the story drag so much through the first half of season one. I struggled to stay with it because not much happened, but was glad I did. I can't believe the new season has fared poorer because it has actually been better, as they trimmed away a lot of the fluff and got to the good stuff! Probably because they knew the sword of Damocles was dangling over their heads. Some may say it went a bit left-wing but hey this is the way your country is going and Americans sure as hell aren't going to hear about it on Fox (unfair & biased) News!

Sorry to correct you, but there was an insurgency in Germany right after WWII. They called themselves the "Werewolves" and they targeted Allied soldiers as well as Germans they considered collaborators. The difference is that the majority of Germans felt that they had been totally defeated at the end of WWII whereas in Iraq, the Iraqis don't because we didn't blow up entire Iraqi cities like what happened to Dresden in WWII. The Sunni insurgency was totally delusional in thinking that if they killed Coalition forces, that Saddam's Baath regime would magically reappear and stomp the Kurds and Shiites back into submission.

...even if you decide not to look toward the Neilsen ratings for Jericho and instead look into downloads, I-Tunes, streaming, DVR, etc., the show's ratings come up short. People didn't watch. It's sad, but it's true.

    TiVo effect on ratings...

    by lynxpro

Actually, the networks do look at TiVo Aggregate Viewer Data if you opted into the program when you first activated your TiVo. The trick is though, your viewership only counts if you watch the program within 2 days of when it was televised live.

    Sometimes I wonder...

    by forget_byron

why public forums were ever created? Were it just so some people could be totally insensitive assholes? I enjoyed Jericho, but I don't understand what benefit there is to slam people who don't care that the show was canned by insulting the shows they watch. At the same time, if you didn't enjoy this show, no need to be a dick about it. God forbid a show you like gets cancelled prematurely.
The point is that I don't comprehend why the posters are arguing when if there is anger on the part of the fans it should be aimed at CBS and not the people who post here. And I completely don't understand at all why people who don't care are posting at all. My advice to those of you doing that is get off the computer, go upstairs, kiss your mom on the cheek and go outside.

CBS said they understood that people would watch the show on Tivo, DVR, and online, but they were looking at the numbers when it aired during its timeslot. Most people just fast forward through the commericals, and this is how CBS makes money from the show. If people are not watching the ads during the show, advertisers will not want to air their ads during that show.

It isn't about whether the show is good or not for networks, it is whether is will draw them a lot of money. There is actually a thing for networks that says that the ads are the show, and the show is actually just what brings people to the ads. If that makes any sense.

    as for John Adams...

    by lynxpro

Episode 3 was flat. I can't wait for Episode 4 to see the reaction John Adams gets from his audience with King George (III). They also seriously whitewashed George Washington in the series. They act like the guy was so humble when he really showed up to the Continental Congress with a customized uniform that he paid to have made for himself. It wasn't issued by Virginia, and he was there to offer himself up, not turn down such an offer. The only time I've ever seen Washington portrayed "negatively" was on a Native American docu-drama on PBS hosted by Graham Green(e) about a year ago that showed him as anxious, greedy, and not the brightest CFL off the shelf at the local Home Depot. But regardless, Giamatti is doing well in the role of Adams, and Tom Wilkinson makes a great Ben Franklin.

    by epsilon

Like someone else said, this was a fun little show, but had too many flaws. I was really into the first several episodes of the first season, mainly because of the mystery of "Who did this and how much of the world is left?" But eventually that faded and the drama of a little Kansas town just couldn't hold my attention. They did a smart thing by offing Jake's parents and giving the show a bigger feel in S2. The black dude is a good actor. I hope he and Skeet find other work. Maybe it goes out with a bang! (pun intended)
