Harry loves his new Blu Ray of UNBREAKABLE!!

Published at:  Mar 20, 2008 11:38:46 PM CDT

UNBREAKABLE is my favorite M Night Shyamalan film. UNBREAKABLE is a comfort film... a movie that I love so much that when I watch it - I turn my computer off... I don't answer the phone and I just get absorbed, completely by the film. It's also a film that I am furious at the world not making it an enormous gigantic success. I want the original trilogy that M Night said this was the first part of. It is strange - watching UNBREAKABLE now that HEROES is on T.V. and oddly - this is the first time I've watched UNBREAKABLE on the other side of Kring's HEROES.

UNBREAKABLE feels like a style guide to HEROES. And now that I've come to grips with the fact that I'll never see the continuing story of David Dunn and Mr Glass. I've had so many dream conversations about the next step for these characters. And I still feel that the best thing that M. Night could do is to complete his trilogy - that UNBREAKABLE has become a film that is has grown in estimation exponentially in comparison to any of his other films on DVD. And on Blu Ray... wow... this film is astonishingly beautiful.

The uncompressed sound and the image are absolutely stunning. In fact - having just watched it, I really want to rewatch it... again. I'm always this way with this film. Watching this film on my screen in 1080p... it brought me back to having seen the film in theaters. Like that scene in that restaurant between Robin and Bruce... with the Maxfield Parrish mural behind them... it is so beautiful, so gorgeous... it glows, and having seen that original Parrish, GARDEN OF ALLAH - at Skywalker Ranch - it transported me back to the ranch for a second.

Now I have to admit - UNBREAKABLE was a bitch to get working properly on my player. I'm bad at keeping up with Firmware upgrades - and in my opinion - they should come self-loading on the discs that require them. But that isn't how it works. Turns out something on the disc was causing my audio settings to send sound out of my R&L sound plugs and not the HDMI - which is how my sound had been configured. This would only occur when the movie started, btw. Till then - sound was dazzling. Then... nothing. No sound on any option on the disc. After two firmware upgrades - I still hadn't discovered what the problem was... Finally - as I was about to give up and put in the British OFFICE discs that my wife is making me discover (Brilliant btw) - I decided to check out my sound features on the Blu Ray player and discovered what the evil disc was doing. And it played fine. THANK GOD! Cuz I really wanted to watch the film - and so did Yoko.

I don't know if this problem exists on any other player, I've got a SHARP BD-HP20 - so if you have that player - you might have a weird Audio hitch - but all you'll need to do is to access your sound menu in SETUP prior to loading the disc and selecting HDMI.

That said - the disc seems to play through perfect now! Woo Hoo! The disc has all the same extras as the Two-Disc Vista Series edition - and those special features are not at 1080p. Sad face. But the disc is completely worth it for the sound and image which are spectacular. The Blu Ray is due out April 1st!

Unbreakable was great start with an abrupt and unsatisfying ending. I realize this is partially because he was planning to continue the story, but I think his failure to find a compelling conclusion to the first chapter contributed to the reception that nixed further installments. That being said, I'll agree it's his best movie.

    Unbreakable on Blu-Ray!!!

    by moviemenace

The shitiness of this movie is now clearer than ever! So clear you can see the twist coming 45 minutes before the end credits instead of 30 minutes before! Listen to the stilted and often unintentionally funny dialogue in digitally remastered surround sound. Fuck Harry, are you really still trying to pitch this awful movie down your reader's throats? This is still Shyamalan's worst, most disappointing film. If you have not seen it, consider yourself lucky, and avoid it at all costs.

Easily His Best film, again misunderstood..

    by ceejaynightwing

by the critics and the majority of the general public who couldn't get past its comic book revelations. MNS never directed more style into any of his pictures again, this film was truly superb and the more you watch it, the more you love it. From the viewpoint of the little girl as she watches him hiton the lady on the train, the realization of the fragments in his life that were breaking and needs to come together to make it all make sense to make it all whole, his son a guiding light in ever step of revelation even to his hidden tears at his father inevitable first life saving headline, and finally to the twisted unveiling of the mastermind villain. A Perfect movie of sheer comic inspired bliss and even without its trilogy stands alone as the greatest comic book film ever made!

    unsatisfying conclusion...

    by headgeek

David realizes who he is... that he is a hero, that he does have powers beyond those of mortal men... and that countless murders and acts of terrorism were done to find him. That every person that died on that train was because of him. That those people in that plane crash died because of him. That his existence justifies a madman's killing spree - to that madman.

It is a fantastic ending. One that ENDS a chapter as it sets the stage for what is next. Does David continue his hero work - or does the revelation about Mr. Glass destroy him.

You may also notice that there are other survivors in the newspaper clippings - like the infant that was the sole survivor of a mud slide that wiped out a town.

I don't see the film as having "Spiritual Significance" - but I do see the film as an excellent bit of story-telling.

Why is it a top story? For one - I got the disc two-weeks early and its a fave film that I wanted to call attention to. That is all.

It is a brilliant film, agreed, but why the public tolerates these vanilla releases is beyond me. Harry, M. Night hasn't made a decent film *since* UNBREAKABLE and I fancy any sequel he'd deliver now risks being of PHANTOM MENACE or MATRIX RELOADED proportions.

One of the neatest little touches to me...

    by zeke25:17

...was that Mr. Glass is dressed in purple a lot of the time; and just about any comic geek knows that villains almost ALWAYS wear purple as one of their chosen colors: Lizard, Doc Ock, Green Goblin, etc. I think it's kinda like every bad guy in the Star Wars movies uses a red lightsaber, whereas the good guys seem to have a choice of at least three colors.
Very rarely is a comic hero dressed in purple: though, of course, Hulk always seemed to have purple pants on now that I think of it...

And as far as the deleted scenes go:

    by zeke25:17

My favorite is the one where Glass as a little kid sneaks onto some spinning ride, thinking he can protect himself with a couple of stuffed animals. His mother's horrified expression, the kid's own expression going from "hey, I'm okay!" to "Oh, FUCK!", and heartbreakingly, the crunch of his bones as he's thrown from side to side. Great scene, but so hard to watch--no wonder it was cut.

I don't recall that Mr. Glass was killing people in order to find Willis, but that in one such attack, he did find him by surprise as the sole survivor. Then sought him out. I really liked Unbreakable, but preferred Sixth Sense. Great movies whose greatness unfortunately got to Sham-alam's head. What an unbelievably big and unjustified ego that guy has.

I swear, right there, I fall in love with Glass' character. Straight out of Jules in Pulp Fiction--and yet, somehow transcending it. No question, btw, this is Night's best film. And for what it's worth, I'd rank The Village second, on the strength of Joaquin Phoenix's and Bryce Dallas Howard's acting.

    by a.m.m.o

He's taken on and stopped a lot of major threats over the years. His 'danger' to the fine citizens of Earth was always over-hyped so there was an excuse to go after him; all he really ever wanted was to be left alone (awww.)

He used Walter B's subtleties to great effect, and could not replicate it with Gibson or anyone else. If The Happening tanks, then Shamalamadong will drift into oblivion, or Walter B will help him out with a redeeming movie. I don't see any other way out.

    I love the film BUT.........(spoilers)...

    by bobman46

........I would have thought that a "supervillain" would have had the common sense to put a DOOR on his secret lair adorned with poster and plans which pretty much stitch him up and say " I did all them things"
............but maybe he wanted to get caught to put himself in the position of nemesis......still......hope that's why and it wasn't a really dodgu mistake.
Also- I had no idea that blu ray players were such high maintenance! Mine would be drunk driving in a month to get some attention......I'll wait until someone at sony decides to do as Harry suggests and add the ugrade to the discs that need them like they do what they do on UMD's - sadly looking like another failed Sony format- I liked them a lot except for the fact that they cost up to double what you pay for the DVD. Still, now's the time to snap up the dying format- I bought a LOAD for 2 for 10 bucks- good ones too. Anyway, Unbreakable rules- I love the moment when you realise you've just watched a Superhero origin story.......just that door thing bugs me.....that's all

Hulk likely HAS done more good than harm

    by mrd

But again that is mostly accidental. Most of the time the (simple-minded) Hulk beats a villain, it's because the villain made the mistake of going after the Hulk. The same is, of course, true of most of the damage Hulk has caused. That is the primary problem with the character sustaining an ongoing series - he is primarily a reactive force, not a proactive one.

But he did try to scare the bad guys, didn't he? So it makes sense that he would don the evil purple costume for intimidation purposes (it would certainly work better than the sky blue of the 60s-70s Batman).

    by a.m.m.o

... he doesn't actually go after innocents or, I believe, has he actually done any serious harm to any of them. In the classic era of the Hulk is there one documented example of him killing a human? Or even seriously hurting one? I can't claim to have read every word but I'd be surprised if Stan Lee allowed Banner's alter-ego to step beyond the boundaries of other Marvel creations.

    BSB> It's definitely worth a catch-up viewing.

    by a.m.m.o

It's one of those movies where you *forget* how good it is, specifically how well-made, and Willis just totally nails his part with a kind of subdued, perplexed but developing confidence that emotionally peaks with the scene where he shows the newspaper of his rescue to his son. His son's reaction, where he has to hold back the tears and David (Willis) puts a finger to his own lips to get him to stay calm, is quietly powerful stuff. It's also the son's redemption after the early incident with the gun, although the mother of course never sees either side of that (at least not in our window of the story.)

Glass had to get caught, to reveal himself...

    by a.m.m.o

... to David, because otherwise there's no point in anything he did (or said) if only *he* knew about it. By making David aware of who he was, he created an identity for himself - Mr Glass - and validated his otherwise bleak existence. Elijah invited him to the exhibition and then took him back to his 'lair'. He definitely wanted to get caught. Think of him a bit like The Joker, inasmuch that you'll recall at the end of the film it states David turned him in and he went to a mental asylum. I like to think time passed and somehow (despite his condition) he escapes and steps things up a bit. Or, we can put the end and the whole film down to being about the scarred delusions of one man (Glass) and the desperate gullibility of another (David), who only survived the crash out of sheer fluke, but Elijah takes it as evidence. However we choose to perceive things it can be argued that it *ended* in a positive sense, at least for the two kids David rescued (less for everybody else on the train, etc.)

Years later, I gave it another spin and it grew on me instantly. I still like "The Sixth Sense" more, but both films are very good. "Signs" is underrated, but I don't like "The Village" or "Lady in the Water."

where every post's of matching quality to this one by the grappa-guzzling one himself, Dino De Laurentiis:

"My problems with a the Unna'breakable, they are a numerous, eh? But a to just a name a the few...

Firstly, right offa the bat, you gotta the goddamn title screen that say something like "Every year, 17 million funny books, they sold inna the U.S., eh?" anna right there, inna the first 15 seconds of a the movie, you gotta alla the women inna the audience saying "holy crappa... you take a me to a the goddamn FUNNY BOOK a movie!?!?" Shyamalan, that putz, he alienates a half a the audience right there anna gets a the other half inna trouble with a their mates, thus impacting a the remaining enna'joyment of a the picture, eh?

Second, you gotta the Shyamalan, who knocked it outta the park onna his first outing with a the Sixth Sense, but he's a the goddamn one-trick pony, eh? He's a no Spielberg, that's a for sure... Unna'like a the Spielberg, he TELLS us everything inna the Unna'breakable, inna'stead of a showing us, eh?

For example, you gotta the Sammy J. character, anna through a the whole goddamn movie, he's a like a the goddamn Chatty-Cathy, "Joe Expository", no? Giving a the goddamn Bruce's character a the goddamn "Funny Books 101" lessons anna such, even a going so far as a to say "Look atta alla the super villians, eh? The artists, they draw them with a the big heads anna bulging eyes anna such, no?" as iffa we dinna notice that a the Sammy J, he's a gotta that crazy hair-do anna the bug-eyes, eh?

Anna then a you gotta the whole thing with a the water, no? Again, you gotta the Sammy J. saying "oh, the water, she's a like a your Kryptonite, eh? Alla the superheroes, they gotta the weakness, eh?" just inna case a we too stupid to figure it alla out, no? Anna then a we gotta to have a the Bruce say "hmm... when I was a the little kid, I alla'most drowned, eh? Anna I dinna bother to try anna swim ever again!!"

Compare that with a the Chief Brody inna the Jaws, eh? From a the very first a scene with a the character onna the ferry, we can a tell from a his body language anna actions, he donna like a the water, eh? Anna so' s a when a the character, they say "you donna like a the water, eh Chief?" atta that point, we alla'ready know it, eh? Anna the question, she becomes alla humorous a 'cos it's a the yokel-gag of a stating a the obvious inna'stead of a the goddamn expository dialog, no?

Third, once a the goddamn Shyamalan sets uppa the film with alla the expository dialog, he donna make a the biggest pay-off of alla, eh? He tell us plain anna simple that a the villian is a the EXACT OPPOSITE of a the hero, eh? Anna so while a the Bruce, he's unna'breakable, you gotta the Sammy J who's totally breakable, eh? With a the fragile anna brittle bones anna such... anna so's a the final pay-off, she would have a been after explaining a the Kryptonite deal with a the water, he should have a shown a the Sammy J. inna the swimming pool or a the therapy pool atta the hospital or a something, moving alla graceful anna flexible anna free inna the water, doing a the "hydro-weight" training anna such, a 'cos a the water, she is a the only place where his a bones, they donna break anna he can a do things inna the water he just a canna do onna land, eh? Inna the water, he has a the strength anna agility, no? Unna'like a the Bruce, who sink a like a the goddamn rock, no?

Fourth, you gotta the whole idea of a the adult man who dinna notice a before that he's a gotta the super-strength anna such ever before inna his a life? Holy crappa that premise, she is alla kinds of a the stupid, eh? Yes, yes, he says something like "I was alla'ways a the good athlete" anna such but holy crappa! Now with paragraph breaks!

    by seppukudkurosawa

The putz, he suddenly discovers as a the adult he can a bench a like a the 700 lbs with ease, no? You donna think he would have a discovered something like a that earlier inna his a life? Like a say, inna the workout room inna the gym a when he play a the football inna high school anna such?

we disagree a lot, as it seems we have with stop-loss, but this post is righteous. as much as i love sixth sense, this is my favorite m. night film. i think the ending is brilliant. it's not about a showdown between David and Elijah. It's a film about discovery and that's what I love about it. Robin Wright Penn, Spencer Treat Clark, the woman on the train, the doctor who tells him about the train, the music, everything is just great in addition to the two leads. this story came out of nowhere for me because i didn't realize it was coming out on blu-ray but I'm sure as hell glad you wrote it up. thanks big man.

OK, maybe not, but it is for sure the primer for Heroes. I LOVED the scene at the breakfast table where the son figures out what a hero his dad is...and Bruce just nods to say "yep, I did that". If M. Night had held onto that brilliance, he would not be the borderline hack that he is seen as today.

    by windowlicker74

Every movie he loves/likes that comes out on blue ray. I mean, around 500 movies are being made each year. Harry ABSOLUTELY LOVES circa 30% of that amount and likes(= "is it the greatest movie ever made? No. BUT..blah blah blah") about 50% = 80% total out of 500 movies is 400 movies. Lets say half of those movies come out on Blu Ray, that would be 200 TOP STORIES each year!! That would be 2,8 TOP STORIES a week about movies that every single one of us has already seen( but this time around the image quality is much better). And I even left out sundays cause then it's YOKO-TIME!

Giving this film its due. I LOVE it. Saw it four times in the theaters and countless times on video. For my money, it's the best film The Sham has done and, more so, the best "comic book" film since Superman: The Movie. The scene where Bruce's kid sees the article in the paper and they look at one another is quite possibly the best moment in American film since DeNiro talked into a mirror. I hope one day more people will see how important this film is. Damn... it's late as friggin hell but I want to pop it in. Thanks again, Harry!

Unbreakable is also my favorite film of his, but the problem with him that all his films follow the same blueprint. Yeah, stories are different, the characters are different, but its always the same mechanics.

A bit of a puzzling opening, slow but effective development of the plot, and then the twist ending. I hope he changes his formula a bit for the happening.

Btw that movie has the most pretentious tag line ever.

    by kwisatzhaderach

To be honest, I kinda like all his flicks. Even in Lady in the Water (his least film, as if you didn't know) there's a level of artistry and care put into the film that commands respect. Yes, it's deeply flawed but at least M Night is trying to do something. He does sound like a bit of an ass in real life though, keep meaning to check out The Man Who Heard Voices...

Shyamalan is his own worst enemy.

    by knuckleduster

After the success of The Sixth Sense, I get the impression that his ego convinced him he was the new king of twist endings and high concept genre pictures. Only problem is, he's not as hot as he thinks he is. His twist endings are no smarter than any Outer Limits episode. And he's covered it all to death by now. Ghosts, superheroes, aliens, boogeymen, fairy tales. Just stop, goddammit. The guy's a pretty good director. He's a master of suspense. I wish he'd just make a straightforward drama or period piece or a fuckin gangster movie or whatever. Just stop trying to outsmart everyone. Nobody's falling for it. That said, Unbreakable is an awesome picture. And the Village isn't nearly as bad as people like to think it is. Acttually, those are the only two of his movies I really like.

The first time I watched Unbreakable

    by rokurgepta

It was such a fantastic experience for me, I was living abroad in Florence, Italy. It's were my father was born, and I had dreamed of connecting with my roots for years, and finally in the 2000-2001 school year, I was able to move to Florence, and get to know distant cousins, and explore and discover a whole side of myself that I had never known, it is the greatest adventure I've ever had.....
So there I was living in Florence, living the dream... one afternoon I was on one of my walks, trust me, if you live in Europe, you learn to truely appreciate everything around you, and go on long walks, and just take in the magnificence that is all around you... So I was on one of my walks, when my cousin Matteo called me and told me that I was hanging out with him and his friends that night , and then we were going to see a movie. (The entire conversation with my cousin was in Italian as he doesn't speak a lick of English) He told me the name of the movie, but with his pour pronunciation of English words, i couldn't for the life of me understand what he was trying to say... Finally after repeated attempts I "figured out" what he was saying... "Hammer Cable" and all I could think to myself was "who the fuck is Hammer Cable!!??" This was not a movie I had heard of, but my cousin is one cool motherfucker, he's actually in a band that is somewhat well known in Italy, they go by the name "Stazione Centrale" I believe 2-3 of their songs can be found on Youtube, a warning though, they sing in Italian, but it's pretty nifty stuff.
So that evening I met up with my cousin and friends, and went to go see this "Hammer Cable" movie, we go to the theater, and the credits start rolling, and it was then that i learned the true title of the movie "Unbreakable" ( a little side note, the movie was dubbed completly in Italian, and it wasn't till last year that I actually was able to watch the movie in English) anyways, I sat in that little Italian theater, and had one hell of a time watching my favorite M. Night film. I don't have the words to describe how much I love the film "Unbreakable" when it comes to fiction, my two favorite kinds of fiction are Time Travel, and Super Heroes, and "Unbreakable" was just incredible, it was like nothing I've seen before, I truely enjoyed watching a movie about a superhero come to the realization that he was a superhero. INCREDIBLE. I wish the tv show Heroes had the feel of the movie "Unbreakable" Since the trilogy was never completed, I wonder if they could finish the story in comic books?

    Firmware discs

    by miami mofo

Hey Harry - just wanted to echo your experience with a new Blu-ray player needing a firmware update. On Thursday, March 6th I bought a Sony BDP-S300. Had no problem hooking it up to my home theatre and was very pleased with the picture on the few Blu-ray discs I had. My problem occurred when I went to play my regular DVDs. The first two I tried worked great but the third wouldn't work once the menu came onscreen. Nothing happened when I hit the 'Enter' button or when I tried to move the highlighted word from 'Play' to 'Audio', etc. Oh well, at least the 'Stop' and 'Open/Close' functions worked so I was able to retrieve the disc. Rather than go through the annoying job of unhooking the player and returning it to Best Buy, I decided to call Sony instead. Because this here notebook computer doesn't have a DVD burner, they immediately sent out a new firmware DVD (Version 3.8) which arrived three days later. Thirty minutes after I inserted this disc I was able to play the DVD that wouldn't play previously and I became a satisfied customer.

Funny that it gets best and worst

    by havok2000

(I would say SPOILERS but this whole thread is, so ...) After I saw "Unbreakable" I figured that was about as I was going to get to a superhero flick directed by Ingmar Bergman. That's a very good thing. To do a "real world" hero flick seems to me still an incredibly ambitious venture and a rare occasion when a studio should be credited for giving a filmmaker a real budget to take a chance. There's not another film that comes to mind that is simultaneously about the role of fantasy / comic books in our culture and works as a mature and nuanced dramatization of how it would really work. Obviously this was the major influence on "Heroes" and if you remember how great that show could be in its first season when it took its time in appreciation of the miracles that were occurring for these characters, it's clear that show would never have existed in that form without "Unbreakable". Nolan's "Batman" films - so much better than all before them - also owe a debt to the respect MNS gave the genre. One final thing since I haven't seen it mentioned here --- notice that MNS shoots most (all?) of his scenes from one or two angles to diminish the studio's ability to recut his film in post-production. He may not have to worry about it now but I remember reading that that style came about after his first two pre-Sixth Sense films were drastically recut.

Sixth sense was an okay movie with a cool ending. Unbreakable was a much more complete film in which Night showed some pretty impressive directorial muscles. But ever since then he's failed to live up to his own hype. Only the Village has been watchable since Unbreakable and that film was drastically misunderstood.

Someone earlier said their PS3 wasn't a good BRP. They were wrong. Please go look at any of he comparos from the last year in any of the videophile rags or online sites. Almost all of them say, almost begrudgingly, that the PS3 is the best overall player on the market. And with their 2.0 download coming in a week or two, they'll have full interactivity before any other BRP by ~6 months. Get an appropriate set (Kuro, anyone!?), and I'd argue strongly there's not a much better picture to be found.

    AMEN.

    by thelastcleric

It was such an awesome experience going into this film cold, knowing so little about it, and coming out literally shocked that I had just watched a superhero origin flick. I really don’t think the “twist” ending was even the real crux of the film but rather a clever entry point to what should have been a brilliant trilogy. For me, the real surprise was the entire film and the gradual realization that I was watching the subtle and realistic evolution of a superhero, complete with a weakness and an arch nemesis. I personally found the climax to be viscerally and emotionally satisfying; when he clamps onto that monster and chokes him out, it was raw and nasty and reminded me of Batman’s clumsy growing pains in Miller’s Year One. I also loved that scene in the kitchen the next day with his son where he quietly shows him the newspaper article with his exploits mentioned, and the son’s eyes well up with tears as he realizes his dad really is a hero. Unbreakable really is a great film and it’s a crime that more people couldn’t wrap their heads around it.

I echo M Night was the funkiest director

    by theycallmemrglass

I love every one of his movies except Lady in the Water which was the mightiest pretentious shit I have seen. It had M Night direction written all over it but the man got well ahead of himself and I believe was given way too much freedom for self fucking indulgence. That hurt. I look forward to The Happening with confidence that M Night has learnt his lesson. I miss the old marketing ploy of hs earlier films where you are not quite sure what the film is going to be about. Unbreakable holds the crown for that, Cloverfield had the potential to steal the crown but slipped up the fact that it was a monster film last minute before anyone saw it.

I will even defend The Village, even thought it doesn't really work. The idea, that fear prevents society from advancing into the modern age, is a good one in our world today. It would have been better served without the "twist" ending. Lady in the Water is a mess, but it is well acted and well crafted. I hope The Happening is a return to form.

should be required viewing in acting classes. Mr. Willis is superb in those quiet moments. I think he is snubbed by the academy (should've been nominated for The Sixth Sense, since just about everyone else was, and it was HIS story) because of his action films and popularity. I think they think he's not acting, just "playing" Bruce Willis.

...very much, really. Liked Sixth Sense a lot, enjoyed Signs (the "bad" SF elements didn't bother me), hated The Village but absolutely LOVE Unbreakable. The first time I saw it I thought it was okay, but have come to adore it with each subsequent viewing.

The scenes I love the most are the ones with his son in the kitchen, carrying his wife back up the stairs ("I had a bad dream") and taking out the serial killer.

I also love the framing in some of the shots which is straight out of comic books, like when Dunn climbs out of the pool. That bit is amazing and very Frank Miller.

James Newton Howard's score is also amazing - rousing, melancholy and very moving.

    by spencertrilby

I agree wholeheartedly, this film is an absolute classic, and - to me - the best super hero story put on screen. Everyone involved, be it Willis, Jackson, Wright Penn, Shyamalan or James Newton Howard, was at his/her absolute best. I'm gonna buy 3 of those (even if I don't own a Blu-Ray player yet), just so the home video figures at last convince them to FINISH THE DAMN THING.

On a side note, I hated the panels they added to the last freeze framed shots on DVD - to "explain" the ending; the unspoiled conclusion in theaters was much better, as it left room for imagination. I wish there was an option to get rid of them on Blu-Ray...

    by darth macchio

When I was a wee rat it was quite hip for the "cool" kids to carry big combs in their back pockets. Typically, these combs were from a brand called "Unbreakable". I clearly remember a day when a friend was showing a girl his comb..."See, it's unbreakable!" while bending the comb...SNAP! and it breaks exactly between the 'n' and 'b' in 'Unbreakable' so he then had 2 pieces of comb...one that had maybe 20 prongs and said "Un" and another which had maybe 150 prongs and said 'breakable'. True story.

Sixth Sense works two times... the first and the second (so you can catch what you missed). The third time the novelty wears off and you're left with a fairly boring film. The Village is awful, Signs is overblown, and don't get me started on the creative brainfart that was Lady in the Water. Unbreakable, on the other hand, works every time. And I'm glad there aren't sequels, that would have effectively killed the subtlety.

    Great Movie

    by nightmute

Glad to see there is so much appreciation for this underrated film, which I firmly believe is MNS's best. A trilogy would be most welcome, but it won't happen. Aside from the only moderate box office performance of this film, I think too much time has passed, and I doubt that M Night was ever really serious about three films. He has too many stories he wants to tell. But anyway, this is a masterful piece of superhero film-making. Slow-paced, yes, but that is one of its strengths. This is a film to sink into and soak up, not to devour. We need more of this kind of film-making.

    by hawaiian organ donor

Well, I am one of the haters and I can't speak for other people, but personally, this movie fell apart for me when Bruce called his boss. When Bruce only then realizes that he has never been sick a day in his life, the movie lost me. During the course of their life, a person will catch countless colds, jam their fingers, get banged up and lift lots of heavy things. If by the age of 16 I realized I could take a solid hit playing football and not be fazed, I think I might be wondering if I was a little different. That was far too great a suspension of disbelief.

Signs is a silly piece of crap

    by gwai lo

I don't know how many times I've typed up a big long diatribe on why Signs is stupid as all hell, but I don't think I'm going to bother with it again. Unbreakable is M. Night's best film, without a doubt, but for a superhero film it is paced like molasses. Yeah, it's supposed to be a drama, hence slowness, but the dramatic elements wouldn't be intriguing at all without the superhero parts. I appreciate a lot of it in theory, including the big reveal at the end, but I don't think I would ever be interested in re-watching it. Not that rewatchability should be the standard of good filmmaking, but considering I watched Batman Begins about 10 times I think this movie is lacking something in comparison. Also, I don't get the love for the visuals in this, I found the cinematography in Unbreakable to be muted and boring to look at, and everything is too blue. I seem to differ with most in that I find M Night, for all his careful framing, to be nearly incapable of creating visuals that don't look plain and generic. Different strokes I guess.

And the ultimate villain in purple is THE PURPLE MAN. He's not only wearing purple. He IS purple.
Purple and green have always been "villain" colors. They were the obvious choice when the heroes were all in the primary colors (Red, yellow, blue) and the colorists had to find new colors within that old four-color process of mixing different-colored dots on a page. How do you get other colors? Mix two different color dots together. Red + blue dots equals purple. Yellow + blue dots equals green. Put them both together and you have a color theme!
Spider-Man: Red/Blue. Green Goblin: Purple/Green. Superman: Red/Blue. Lex Luthor: Purple/Green. Fantastic Four: Blue/White (with some orange and red for Thing and Torch). Galactus: Purple/Green.
It's the CODE, guys. The RULES of the silver age. They had few choices, so they stuck with the themes they had.

    The Maxfield Parrish

    by bdt

Is a stained glass mural designed by Parrish and executed by Tiffany.
The last time I saw it, it was in the lobby Curtis building (where the publishers for the Saturday Evening Post had their offices) in Philadelphia. Several years ago, there was some controversy about that piece when the building was bequeathed. There was no restaurant there, it was a marble and wood lobby of an old office building. The stained glass is gorgeous and backlit. So, are you talking about the original painting or the actual stained glass cause now I am curious about how that controversy played out and I'd like to know if Lucas actually bought the stained glass mural or an original painting.

    by hawaiian organ donor

I got into a discussion with a friend who said the exact same thing. And I called bullshit. For pain, you don't need a point of reference. If your 10-year friend takes a header off his bike and scrapes the crap out of his hands and legs, you do the same thing and come out without a scrape, that tells you something. You smash your finger in a cupboard or drawer and your wife asks if you're hurt and you say "What now?" then she might question it. Only a hermit is going to live a life where they don't take a spill in front of another person. Taking a spill usually involves pain. When you show no signs of pain to those around you, they'll question it. Only in Ben Stiller and Van Damme movies does a guy get kicked in the balls and looked unfazed, When you're watching "Casino" with your best friend and some guy is screaming and you turn to your friend and ask why, he's going to say "The guy has his head in a frickin' vice and it hurts like hell is why" then you might go home and do a search on the Internets for 'pain.' I don't need to go through childbirth to have a point of reference. My point of reference was the 2 hours my wife screamed like a banshee and told me to die. I don't care if you or Harry or anyone else still loves the movie after giving this issue some thought, but it cannot be denied by a rational person that a man in is late 30's-early 40's is going to witness a lifetime of other people's pain and wonder why he NEVER suffers the same reaction.

but it was the only time I actually heard people cursing under their breath as they left the theater. That's because they were expecting him to be a messiah. People want to know what they're getting from a movie before they see it, otherwise they want their money back. That's why I hate people. Maybe it's better as a single film though. You never know what could happen in subsequent movies. Sometimes things get wacky.

    by magic rat

honestly, after watching all the films he's made since then, I'm not sure I want to. His movies have gotten worse over the years, maybe not in terms of style, but in terms of going from interesting to boring. The Happening looks like an interesting film - until you realize it's about plants trying to kill people with a toxic gas. Which is kinda lame, and could easily be made into a very boring film if everything he attempts to do in the film doesn't go exactly right.

I just watched this with my better half (who liked it btw). I feel the same way about this movie. It's a movie, especially if you enjoy the genre and comics that speaks to you on an almost spiritual level. How about we all chip in and get M.Night to make the other two? And it's true, Heroes does feel like part of the same universe, it's too easy to picture Dunn as the Heroes version of Superman.

    Hawaiian Organ Donor

    by waggy

I'm 25 and I've never had a serious injury or illness in my life. Never been to the emergency room or the hospital ever. About the worst I've had was a rolled ankle once that got better after about a day, and a few cases of strep throat as a kid. I don't find myself wondering if I'm some miracle of enhanced genetics, I just figure I've been lucky. And like lead sharp said, it never says he can't feel pain

This is a great movie...even the
slow scenes are shot in a way as to hold the viewers interest (as long as you don't have ADD in which case you SHOULD avoid it at all costs). Also the ending is great...Now we all go in to MSK movies looking for the "hook" and that hurts his films- but this was spun together very well regardless.

    Classic film

    by grammatoncleric

MNS might be a giant, self-inflated douchebag, especially based on his stupid hoax specials and his tired reliance on supernatural plot twists. But Unbreakable is a fantastic film. I wish he would let up with the hamhanded "mirror image" references in the film (we get it, we get it). But like one of the posts above, the scene in the train station where he lets his powers expand, brushes against passerbys and gets brief glimpses of people's ugliest moments is brilliant. I use this film as a litmus test for people serious about sci-fi and also to assess their attention factor.

    by antoniusbloc

Heroes seems like a cheap imitation of Unbreakable, but what would make Unbreakable great is a conclusion...awesome protagonist/antagonist set up, but it requires the punch. So are pretty much most major films available on blu ray? More importantly, are the extended versions of LOTR available on blu ray?

(And by the way, how good was that actress? With what little screen time she had, how easy it was for her to move us...just like the first time you hear James Newton Howard's theme when Elijah walks out to the bench...)

    Thyroid

    by liverstealer

Harry...R4? Did you mean T4? That's a chemical produced by the thyroid that deals with a wealth of metabolic processes. If you are hypothyroid, your T4 (and T3) levels would be low and your thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels would be highly elevated. If that's the case, the docs should be able to put you on Synthroid to help regulate all that. I'm hypothyroid, yet I can't seem to gain weight, which oddly enough is the exact opposite of what would be expected.

I love the idea of setting a comic book in a reality closer to our own. Just that scene with Willis wearing his security cape. Wow. In a way, maybe we're lucky that there won't be more movies- like the Matrix sequels, there's no way they could live up to where the movie ends.

    by admiral nelson

...because DAMN, is this movie slow, slow, slow as hell. (And I don't mind thoughtful, introspective movies... I think both versions of Solaris are mesmerizing.) The idea is cool (and it's got a typically great James Newton Howard score -- he does some of his best work for M. Night), but the movie still needs a serious infusion of caffeine. Its incredibly slow pace -- not its story -- is what hurt it at the box office.

since the extras aren't in HD

    by lynxpro

I'm just going to ask the question...did the studio enable (as an option) Profile 1.1 PiP support to view the extras content that way? That would be less noticeable (SD vs. HD). I found that the case for the extras on *Sunshine*...which would have been a super awesome film had I not already been a big fan of *Event Horizon*! On *Sunshine*, the extras are also not in HD and it looks alright in the small PiP window. Maybe the player manufacturers should update the machines via firmware to detect the SD content on the BD disc and upscale it automatically. Then again, a lot of the extras video footage to a lot of flicks look like they aren't even using DV cams and something more to the like of VHS-C it seems so maybe upscaling wouldn't work so well. And no, I'm not changing my position on PiP (in relation to the deceased HD DVD), I just asked/suggested the option in terms of coping with non-HD extras content.

    Dunn's pain..

    by hotscot

Yes, I believe he could feel pain and discomfort. It's just never enough to incapacitate him or lay him low enough to be sick and take time off. Think of the scene in the weight room, he progressively benches heavier and heavier weights, obviously it's a discomfort and not easy, but he manages to do this superhuman effort.
My vote also goes with the scene in the kitchen where he confirms to his kid that he is the hero. My eyes well up when I think of it.
They should allow M. Night to direct a Heroes episode, concentrating on Sylar.

    by fish tank

I'm sure you're a great guy - you seem very honest, exhuberant, and unlucky in the weight department. Not in love - nice score on the wife ;-) BUT... Hypothyroidism, regardless of the level, cannot compete with simple physics. More food in = more weight on. If hypothyroidism is causing you to be more efficient with your processing of food, EAT LESS! One orange a day CANNOT make you gain weight - the physics are impossible. Now - I'm not saying you should eat one orange a day _only_, I'm just using that as an extreme example. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say "Oh, I eat next to nothing, and can't stop gaining weight. Bullshit. They're either closet eaters, or liars - either way they're delusional. Lap bands, tummy cuts etc. etc. are only necessary when the brain has lost willpower. If you get some surgery to correct your "problem", that's fine, but it'd be better for your entire well being if you overcame it on a mental level. You seem like a nice guy - don't eat yourself to death, or very least a permanent seat on the couch. Cheers mate.

While I understand why many don't like it or consider it average, from the time I saw Unbreakable in New York during its premiere until today I feel the film is utterly brilliant. It is not perfect, but brilliance does not depend on perfection. Not only is the story kickass, there is a depth, a stillness, an emotional maturity to what is essential a comic book origin story that transcends the genre in both comics and cinema. By the way, the end of Unbreakable did suck. Its like Night accidently left the footage for the final scene out in the sun and was too lazy to go back and film it, so thought he could suffice with "then some shit happened that ties this all up" scribble on the screen.

"ONCE" dvd gets my HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION.

    by jdanielp

Sorry to post this here but I simply had to mention...somewhere...my feelings about 2007's low-budget "ONCE", which my wife and I experienced only last night. Musically (in a sense), I compare it to my discovery of COLDPLAY, when I first heard them playing on The Tonight Show. (Sometimes, you just immediately know that you're witnessing something extraordinary.) In my opinion, "ONCE" is arguably the best "movie-musical" ever made. Song highlights are "Falling Slowly", "If You Want Me (Satisfy Me)", "Lies", and "When Your Mind's Made Up", all of which are very memorable. If you have not yet discovered the music, do yourself (and your significant other) a huge favor and find this flick on dvd...and experience the music within the context of the story, which is told in a very natural, life-like, documentary-style of digital movie making. This is one that will stand the test of time. My congrats to them for capturing such a powerful little story on such a low budget. HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION.

Unbreakable is criminally underrated. I don't get why people don't like Shaymalan, but here's my theory: The Sixth Sense was such an amazing piece of pop culture, with an ending that even the dumbest or most superficial moviegoer could appreciate. Ever since then, people have been looking for M Night to replicate that EXACT thing and have missed the understated greatness of his more recent movies. Unbreakable truly makes me emotional. Bruce Willis is so heart-wrenching in this movie, so deeply sad and layered that I can't help but empathize. Likewise, in Signs and Lady in the Water, M. Night gets such a deeply touching performance out of his leads. Though, to be fair, The Village sucked a little.

All that hype, all that build up for a film that had almost NO action in it, was amazing BORING given the subject matter, and astonishingly retarded in regards to the whole motivation of the villian!Comic book nerd Mr. Glass apparently goes around making trains crash and causing hundreds to die, simply because he HOPES that someday someone invulnerable MIGHT be onboard one day, so he can be that guy's personal "super-villain"???It was almost like the ultimate spoof on the utter stupidity of comic-book fans and the lengths they'll go to to live out their fantasies! Why does anyone think this move is good? It's BORING and pretty dang stupid! >:P

Lady in Water is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. As much as I like the idea of Unbreakable sequels, I fear that they will only take away from the original.

Coldplay's 1st Tonight Show appearance, playing "Clocks"

    by jdanielp

It's too funny how you can give your individual opinion on here and EXPECT to be attacked, here in the talkbacks...though I was expecting something much harsher. C'mon guys, can't you do better than that? (heh, heh) Anyway, I only mentioned Coldplay (above) because it was a way for me to compare the recognition of something special, without any knowledge of the performers. (Note, however, that I did remember the movie "ONCE" was mentioned here at AICN.) As far as I know, the Coldplay performance (of song "Clocks") that I witnessed on the Tonight Show w/Jay Leno...was just before they became the huge success that they are today. (I was hoping to find a YouTube.com link for that specific Tonight Show performance, but no such luck. However, the music video for "Clocks" can be found at YouTube.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9j_RZDqYc4

    Oh, and by the way.....

    by jdanielp

...I was only assuming that it was Coldplay's 1st performance on the Tonight Show. As far as I know, it could very well have been their ONLY performance on the show (which I'm guessing it was). And to talkbacker Tourist, I do like U2. (heh, heh) But understand, I collected comic books while others collected music. (Radio was more in-step with having a limited comic book budget, while having a perhaps unusual taste for classical/orchestra music.) Other than an occasional AICN topic of a movie soundtrack/score, this is likely the most that I'll ever discuss music at AICN. And by the way, have you seen "ONCE"??? you can find it dvd. :-D

.....HD-DVD will come roaring back. You'll see!!! :-D But seriously, how many Mom & Pops are going to buy into a format that involves technical up-grades when cheap dvd continues to be available? Simplicity is a huge factor...and because that is a real fact, these particular HD formats never had a chance to become the success that is dvd.

General Crom - Unseen "Better" Movies

    by hawaiian organ donor

If a list of amazing movies that most of the North American audience hasn't been exposed to yet is what you're looking for, then you need to start checking out sites that review Asian flicks. A few years ago Harry put out a "best of the year" that included two Korean movies. Oddly though, AICN rarely reviews Asian films and when they do it's by some anonymous guy who wants you to call him Tweeter. But if you're looking to see some amazing films that you've probably never heard of then check out Shinobi: Heart Under Blade (Japanese wire-fu that will knock you on your ass), The Warlords (Jet Li at his best), Daisy (Korean hitman runs amok in Amsterdam) and Protege (undercover Hong Kong cop tries to bring down drug kingpin). Unfortunately, Shinobi is the only one available to rent online through major retailers like Blockbuster, the other 3 you'll either have to download or rent online from a service like Tiger Cinema. Asian cinema is more hit than miss and for every great movie, you'll have to sit through 10 that are drek. But finding those jems is worth it. Also, asking people for their recommendations is rather pointless. Who can account for taste? Harry trashed Matrix Reloaded but gushed over the steaming piles of dogshi that were Spider Man 3 and Rise of the Silver Surfer. I thought Unbreakable was terrible but thought X3 was just barely passable. But if you want unseen, then go foreign.

    Mr. Glass

    by banjohik7

One thing I almost never hear people mention when they discuss this movie (and correct me if I'm wrong), but at least twice when we are introduced to Sam Jackson's character, it's through the reflection of glass. First as a child in the beginning through the television screen. Then his introduction as an adult (which I can't exactly remember). Just a great foreshadowing of him becoming "mr. glass" and a display of how much care and detail m. night put into the movie. He's still a pretentious fuckhead.

HARRY! You call yourself a Parrish fan?

    by blue_demon

The Parrish image in the movie "Unbreakable" is a glass mosaic, not a mural. It's named "Dream Garden." It was made by the Tiffany Studios from a design by Parrish. "The Garden of Allah" is a completely different painting. (Yeah, I've been a Parrish fan ever since I saw "Daybreak" when I was a kid. Awesome painter.) Carry on.

    The Philadelphia "Unbreakable" Tour

    by mooseaka

    (1) Start at Franklin Field (33rd and Spruce Streets)the stadium where Bruce worked as a Security Guard. Fun Trivia: Franklin Field was where much of Invincible was shot, as well as the scene in Twelve Monkeys where the elephant is running under the same arches where Bruce and Samuel L. were watching the line to get into the game! Bonus Trivia: Franklin Field is home to the Penn Quakers and is the site of Vince Lombardi's only NFL Playoff loss in his career (and the site of many of Mooseaka's Intramural Football games in college).
Go directly across the street to the University City Regional Rail station and see the steps that Mr. Glass fell down after following the guy with the gun.Head East into town and swing by Mr. Glass' comic book shop, which is actually a store front on the 1600 block of Locust Street. Stop next door at Tequila's restaurant for some authentic mexican food. On the way there, walk past Rittenhouse Square where they filmed a key scene in The Happening that you can see in the trailer where the cop standing in the street of abandoned cars (look for Mooseaka's balding head in the background as I saw them film some of this)Head a few blocks further East and see if you can sneak into the building at 15th and Chestnut where they filmed the iconic train station scene where Bruce figures out his powers. That building has been one failed project after another since they shot this movie, but it might become a House of Blues soon. Head a little further East and walk around Pine Street and Spruce Street to see the house where Bruce lived/died in the Sixth Sense and the Antique Shop where his wife used to work.Gotta love M. Night if you are from Philly. Not only does he keep coming back, but he makes the city look beautiful.

Ok, you didnt like the film, I can live with that. But I wanted to reply to your post about MrGlass's reasoning behind what he does.
I believe that he is trying to find this opposite person so he can find his place in a world that he really does'nt belong in. And if he finds that person, it will give him a purpose and a place in the world.
Anyhoo.... I love the film, its one of my faves.

A couple more stops on the Tour

    by mooseaka

If you have some extra cash, stop into The Striped Bass, where Bruce was late for his Anniversary dinner with his wife. They've since remodeled, but the marble pillars and the metal fish sculpture are still there. Swing by the Curtis Center at 6th and Walnut (across from Independence Hall where they wrote up that Constitution thing) and check out the Maxfield Parrish mosaic in the building's lobby (that's not a real restaurant, but they put a bunch of tables and chairs there to look like one).

Clocks was the SECOND single off of their SECOND album. Their first album was a monster success that made them worldwide superstars...So you were a couple of years behind everyone else. Like your delayed appreciation of Once.I saw Once a long time ago and with my friends laughed at its precious cliched indie fag pretensions and tried to ignore the tacky cloying indie fag music. But Americans have a boner for it, and its nice to see someone who makes something with available material that they love and manages to have huge success with it.

Crom-Sorry but the Matrix sequels were crap

    by 900lbgorilla

Unbreakable was great, but you are way off on the Crap–Trix…What garbage. Let’s watch Computer Programs talk about sex with other programs….and get jealous of other programs who kiss people in programs…. On second thought, I’m not even going to start in on the multiple layers of stupidity built upon moronic stupidity that is the Matrix 2 and 3…. suffice it to say if you think lots of crap on the screen makes movie great, I have some Star Wars prequels, Jurassic Park sequels, and a lot of Michael Bay movies to show you….We don’t need to compare flawless movies to the Matrix 2 and 3….just start by comparing those turds to staring at a blank wall and your closer to being on topic…

Because I didn’t bother watching it. Though you are being sarcastic, I will accept that you were probably brainwashed by Monica B’s Tits. They were the only good part of the sequels. Incidentally The Matrix #1 was a landmark of Sci-fi. I have nothing against the Matrix…. I wish 2 and 3 were even better, and would have completely accepted them had they simply been notably lesser but worthy successors….unfortunately I call a turd a turd - my pre-movie feelings about the subject notwithstanding.

Of COURSE Glass wants to be caught

    by kaitain

He'll be out of the Arkham Asylum equivalent in no time due to his phenomenal intellect, and then the game will begin. That's the entire POINT of the movie...Glass has been waiting for decades to find his nemesis, searching for him. Only NOW can his life proper begin, with both players at the board. He wants to be caught as a form of announcement to the world, then he'll be out, a famous escaped uber-villain, and only then can he and Dunn can knock heads properly.

Unbreakable is a phenomenal film, easily Shyamalan's best. Even leaving the beautiful plot construction aside, the sheer craftsmanship of that movie (framing, pacing, lighting, editing) is amazing.
