The Juice gives a brief look at THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER

Published at:  May 15, 1999 12:51:33 AM CDT

We've received thus far mixed reviews on this film, but I thought the trailer looked intriguing. I'll just turn it on over to the Juice for a brief look see for ya..

Hey Harry, Juice here. Saw a final print of The General's Daughter tonight,
and theres not a whole lot to say...its not a great movie, its not a bad one
either. I never read the book, but i hear it is decent (and someone in the
screening with me said they had read the book and it followed well). The
story centers around the mysterious murder of the General's daughter (gasp!),
and John Travolta investigates. Now this movie has some of the most graphic
rape scenes Ive ever seen so be prepared. Travolta was excellent in his part,
one of his better acting performances although the southern accent that he
tries in the beggening was quite horrific, but thankfully it doesnt near the
rock bottom Nick Cage in ConAir (will there ever be an actor who can do one
right other than Matthew Mconaughey (sp?). James Woods is awesome once again!
Some of the dialogue between Travolta and Woods is fantastic. So this movie
is worth a morning matinee. Whats wrong with it? Well there about two big
things in the plot (that i can remember) that are completely unexplained, and
the payoff at the end is kinda ridiculous (or atleast it was to me). So all
in all I would reccomend seeing this movie for some of the acting, but not
much else...

Damn these double bladed lightsabers are cool I cant stop
turning off the lights and hitting stuff with it I
feel like im ten again, later, THE Juice

    Not even good morning matinee

Unless they've done some major changes since the screening I saw--like losing the dopey and lame romantic banter between Travolta and Stowe and the extremely dopey and lame "at least I still have the girl" ending, and adding some more scenes between Travolta and Woods, which were the only really compelling elements in this movie--it's just another waste of good actors and guitar picks. And a very black mark in the resume of William Goldman, although from what I hear this movie went through a lot of writers and he was one of the only ones to come out intact, so I can pray maybe his stuff is the John and Jimmy scenes. Keep on walking to something else--EYES WIDE SHUT, BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, LIMBO, hell, go to LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL (you know it'll still be playing) again, but do not cast a vote for this lazy hackery by purchasing a ticket.

    Matthew McConaughey

The reason Matthew McConaughey does a Southern accent so well is because he really talks with a Southern accent.

    Not even close

While "The General's Daughter" script bore more of a resemblence to the novel than, say, Starship Troopers, it's certainly a lousy adaptation and the director missed the point entirely. It's too bad; the book was terrific.

And where did the actor's learn to salute?

I've seen the trailer for this thing about 5 times. This movie looks like a turd of colossal proportions.
