Did Edgar Wright find his SCOTT PILGRIM?

Published at: March 19, 2008, 1:45 a.m. CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Edgar Wright has long been attached to bring comic book SCOTT PILGRIM'S PRECIOUS LITTLE LIFE to the big screen.

Now it looks like he's found his Scott Pilgrim. It's funny... when I interviewed the three leads of SUPERBAD they had all three just been to my favorite comic book store, Austin Books and Comics, and had a ton of comics around the hotel room. In those stacks were many volumes of Scott Pilgrim. I was under the impression they were Jonah Hill's as it was his suite we did the interview in, but I'm wondering now if Michael Cera knew he was up for the role and was reading up... or maybe he had read them and had recommended them to Hill... or maybe it was just a complete coincidence. Whatever the case, Cera is now in final negotiations to star in the film, about a young man who finds his dream girl, but has to fight and defeat her 7 ex-boyfriends before he can win her heart. Cera and Wright... two great tastes that'll taste great together, I think. I'm glad to see Cera get a leading role. It's well deserved. What do you folks think?

    And Sorry to say...

    by MMacKK

But first! Feels good to be first on any Edgar Wright newspiece. The man is genius.

Outstanding news. I love Cera, but I think he needs to break out of the nervous nerdy guy thing. Still, this is good news.

    WHAT ABOUT ANT-MAN????

    by reflecto

    For God's sake!

    Weird...

    by JimCurry

Love both of them, and yet this isn't exciting me at all... Explanations??

    Good fucking god

    by ryandowneyjr

I have goosebumps. My eyes welled up. This is the fucking perfect marriage of everything awesome in the world. I love beyond words Scott Pilgrim. I love beyond words Edgar Wright. I love beyond words Michael Cera. This has totally made my day.

  • March 19, 2008, 2:12 a.m. CST

Hey, Pilgrim! You forgot your pop-gun!

    by Horace Cox

Had to do it, even though I can't stand John Wayne.

  • March 19, 2008, 2:13 a.m. CST

    Nice...

    by BrooseTheScharuk

...I understand the comic is set in Toronto. Seeing as Michael Cera is Canadian, hopefully it won't be Americanized. You know, like Wayne's World.

    Seven ex-boyfriends?

    by otm shank

Man that must be some seriously righteous pussy.

    Get Joss Wheadon for this!

    by skywalkerfamily

    It's practically a Buffy episode.

    ummm

    by drHandsome

really? i mean i love michael cera as much as the next guy, but he doesn't really scream "scott pilgrim" to me. pilgrim is a good-looking doofus with mad fighting skills. cera is a birdlike awkwardster with below average physical coordination. i'm pretty sure i've seen him in every single role he's done, and he's yet to prove he can play otherwise. better ideas for pilgrim (all for different reasons): - andy samberg - emile hirsch - jamie bell

PERFECT CASTING! WELL DONE WRIGHT - if true! :-)

If this news had a face

    by THE WALLACE

I would punch it in the balls. Bad casting... this should never have been done live action to begin with, but as much as I like Cera, this is not the right casting.

  • March 19, 2008, 3:53 a.m. CST

Guess I'll have to pick up the comics now.

    by Knuckleduster

Hey, if Edgar Wright likes, it can't be too The Dark Knight Strikes Back. Oh, I'm sorry, I meant to say "it can't be too shit". Stupid word association.

Wright is doing Pilgrim??? BEST FILM EVAH!

    Perfect casting

    by Brendon

Now... for the other roles. I heard a rumour about Zooey Deschanel and Ramon AAAAAGES ago but she's clearly not young enough any longer. Anyways... here's hoping they actually get to shoot at the Pacific Mall and Wychwood library.

  • March 19, 2008, 5:13 a.m. CST

bad casting, and how will they fit it all in?

    by lex romero

I love them both but unless he changes his typical performance he's not gonna work as scott pilgrim. I'd rather see Edgar do antman film tbh, could help set up for avengers film to. ¬_¬

Also i'm curious how they're gonna fit in all 7 evil ex boyfriends in one film, especially when the series hasn't even got that far yet in the comics! Also a stack of scott pilgrim comics seems an exageration, there's only volumes out and only 3 would have been out last time you interviewed them...buti'm just nitpicking.

  • March 19, 2008, 5:22 a.m. CST

Oh I'm sorry sweetheart, is that your leg?

    by kiddae

Yeah, Michael Cera's definitely more of a Young Neil, ain't he? Emile Hirsch was my pick for Scott, too. Oh well, good luck to the gorgeous son of a bitch, hope he pulls it off.

  • March 19, 2008, 5:31 a.m. CST

    Wow....

    by Tourist

...You guys love to suck the fucking Apatow related cock AND the Wright cock, but for once, even knowing nothing about this comic book, I get the feeling I'll be right there beside you, mouth open, waiting to catch their loads. This gives me the same feeling I had prior to Be Kind Rewind. Perfect material for the perfect people involved. I hope it actually pans out though, unlike the other flick.

    even before Superbad came out.

I'd rather have this than Ant Man, but

    by beastie

I'd rather have a new Edgar Wright original than either.

  • March 19, 2008, 6:18 a.m. CST

    Good choice

    by aleeminator

Not only is he a good fit but since Cera is from in and around Toronto himself it gives me hope taht the setting of the comics wont change for the movie

  • March 19, 2008, 8:23 a.m. CST

Cera's ALREADY starring in Youth in Revolt

    by cowboyone

That movie will make his a star. The book is inspired ... I'm not saying Confederacy of Dunces brilliant, but ...

  • March 19, 2008, 8:25 a.m. CST

That cover art is G -A -Y though, huh?

    by cowboyone

I guess the writing must be good?

LOVE Michael Cera, but i pictured Emille Hirsch

    by waggy

I don't know, Scott Pilgrim just strikes me as being cooler than Cera usually plays

Cera's Great but not right for this role

    by The Funketeer

Maybe he's just been typecast but Scott Pilgrim is far hipper and more energetic than anything Cera's ever done.

  • March 19, 2008, 2:15 p.m. CST

    it could work

by they call it the dip

i'm pretty excited about it. it's a chance for edgar wright to flex without the help of simon pegg and nick frost(both of which I hope do great, original work). It's a chance for Cera to be a little more versatile. I don't think they're going to try to fit it to be exactly like the nervous, awkward Cera from Superbad, Juno, or Arrested Development. From Clark and Michael, I can see where Cera could play more extroverted roles. DonWillyMo - thank you for your obsolete pop culture references.

  • March 19, 2008, 4:40 p.m. CST

    I don't see it

    by Ribbons

I know, I know, that's why they're called AC-TORS!, but this is "perfect casting" in what sense? The type of role that Cera's played his entire career is pretty much the polar opposite of Scott Pilgrim, besides for the dirty blond hair. Where's the... I dunno... insouciance? Still, I guess I should just be thankful that it's not Shia LaBeouf. Also the fact that they're making a Scott Pilgrim movie in the first place is kind of cool. I just wish it was with a different actor. Prove me wrong, Edgar Wright! Otherwise you're not getting any of my money! Okay, you are regardless. *sigh*
