I'm a huge fan of Galactica, but I think this sounds VERY dull. Why not do a series about the first war with the Cylons? Show the toasters in their glory, Viper MkIs, could be really cool. Get Richard Hatch on to play the commander of the Galactica before Adama. You'd make him the happiest man on Earth. You could guest-star a bunch of original cast-members that way. Unless, of course, that is the very idea they're going for.

This makes perfect sense for SciFi channel...

    by snowpuff

    ...since it makes no sense.

Let's see: don't guarantee a fifth season to Moore and Eick, do piss off fans by extending the last season over almost two years, then greenlight a pilot for a prequel to a show that supposedly didn't have enough ratings to guarantee a fifth season...

    Makes sense, right?

    by lonegun

They deprive loyal viewers of a proper ending to BATTLERSTAR GALACTICA, only to greenlight a prequel. Hey, I'll definitely tune into CAPRICA, but this doesn't take away the soreness I feel at BSG being cut short.

    by mullah omar

I thought the prequel would be set during a protracted war and was excited. I love BSG, but a "genius lawyer/inventor from outer space" show doesn't sound like it will have the immediacy or appeal of BSG.

I think this can be SciFi's first real drama that doesn't have to be about space or explosions and still be science fiction orientated. They will probably trip over themselves in the pilot or first part of the mini trying to tie it in to BSG, but there are almost immediately a lot of potential story lines. The cylon war is going to be out there but, and I hate to say this, like terminator, the question will be how we get there and what failures lead to the war.

    by big dumb ape

Seriously, the minute you hear that ANY series or mini-series is coming from the Halmi production team, you should instantly realize it will be of INCREDIBLE suckage -- at which point you should program your DVR or Tivo to be sure it DOESN'T record that night. Because utter shit is all they produce, certainly starting right from the outset with some of the worst concepts and worst script jobs ever.On the other hand, I guess they are an inspiration to some. The Halmis are a tribute to conning banks and people with money to back your latest Grade Zero production. So, for aspiring filmmakers out there, I guess the Halmis could be seen as idols. Or at least for people whose motto is: "Nothing is too shitty to make or spend money on!"Latest, greatest example: TURD GORDON.

As for CAPRICA, I agee with Mezzanine...

    by big dumb ape

You're talking about doing a sequel to a show that has already been droppping in the ratings and losing fans with each successive year. Personally, I still basically enjoy BSG, but subsequent years have never been as consistent or as fulfilling as Season 1 was -- at least to me. And I agree with others that a show about a lawyer doesn't exactly chime my bells the way I'd be excited if you told me this was about the first Cylon War with a shitload of action and other traditionally fun geeky stuff. So I agree with Mezzanine -- if BSG ends on a good note, CAPRICA will benefit. On the other hand if BSG goes out with a whimper or ends on a note that has fans going "What the fuck?! THAT's how the whole thing ends?!?" then CAPRICA ain't gonna be cool news for very long...

I'd take season 2 and 3 over 1 any day of the week.

    by the outlander

Anything to do with Galactica is definitely cool news. And people complaining about the quality of seasons 2 and 3 are full of shit. Just because the show changed and had a couple of week episode does not mean that the show over all got weaker. There where a lot of thinks in season 3 that where actually better done than they where in season 1. Season 1 wasn't far from perfect and most of the major events in season 1 didn't happen until the last two episodes. If you compare Seasons 1, 2 and 3 you will find that a lot more happened in Season 2 and 3 than what happened in Season 1. People shouldn’t confuse pacing with story telling. Season 1 was very well put together and was well paced, but for story I’ll take season 2 and 3. The arrival of the Pegasus and the occupation and escape from New Caprica where well ahead of anything they did in Season 1.

The Writer's strike revived this show

    by gornpirate

The network runners saw the BSG ratings and the story and had pretty much put this Capria idea to pasture. But with the Writers strike going on they didn't have any knew scripts or concepts that were ready to go to production so they revived this series. I will give it a shot but I fear the Sci-Fi network honchos are not going to be behind this series 100% and let it die after a season or two whether it is any good or not.

    Caprica film -YES, Caprica series-NO!

    by ceejaynightwing

Don't need it, it'll only end up like those horrible Babylon 5 spin-offs like Crusade, Legend of the Rangers and Lost Tales (Yuck) By all means do another movie that doesn't need its story to be continue with a hit or miss TV show. But don't do a pilot for a series only to start something they're not committed to finishing. Battlestar has waned a little since they screwed with the format, having 13 episodes only in the first season made for a no-nonsense approach to producing. No unnecessary episodes or weak ones either, like trimming the fat off a lean piece of beef! The next two season being 22 episode affairs got inflated with season fillers and dragged out stories to justify the new length and that's why the first season on a whole was superior to them. The best thing they can do with Caprica is to present it as another mini series like they did with the Galactica Pilot. A three hour miniseries of Caprica with a decent conclusion and no more!

    Caprica series

    by alex138

doesn't seem like it would be very interesting. I like the survivalist drama aspect of BSG, but a big part of the series is I want to unravel the mystery of the Cylons. If they explain it in BSG, then I don't think Caprica would be very exciting, because it would just be playing out what I already know (like I've been spoiled) and would remove any sense of mystery behind the prequel series. I wasn't much of a fan of the Star Wars prequels because you knew what would happen from the beginning. They didn't really reveal anything we weren't expecting...it's like they just played everything out. On the other hand, if they don't explain the mystery of the cylons at the end of BSG, I would just feel ripped off and pissed that they are forcing me to watch another series to find closure.

I just watched it for the first time this past year also. I loved the character arcs. It's funny, I always felt that Quark, Rom, and Nog were the most annoying characters for the first two or three seasons, but they truly had the most profound impact on me in the end. And Dukat, Dumar, and Weyun? Their bizarre love triangle was practically Shakespearian, especially with such heavy hitting actors as Combs, Biggs, and Alaimo. I just watched Babylon 5 for the first time: sorry kids, no comparison. The Dominion War wins every time. Hell, it even got me watching Voyager. I fucking hate Kes tho. Sherm out.

Enough about who/what is better than JMS/Babylon 5 no matter what you pimply faced fucks think of him or the show, you owe him a debt of thanks for doing character/story arcs in the first place. If it wasn't for Joe's creative vision you wouldn't even have shows like Lost, Jericho, BSG, etc. And DS9 was ripped off from Joe when he was pitching Paramount for B5. They turned around and made a Star Trek spin off on a Space Station...hmm fancy that...
