This STRANGERS Trailer Creeps Me Out...

Published at:  Mar 13, 2008 6:36:38 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I should hate this movie on general principle. I spent a year or so working on a home invasion film with a pair of producers I like a lot, and my writing partner and I finally turned in a script we all liked a heck of a lot. Unfortunately, THE STRANGERS turned out to be a cockblock on an epic scale, preventing us from getting our film made because of similar ground being covered.

I’ve read THE STRANGERS. And seeing this trailer, it looks like it’s a classy, creepy flick. So like I said, I should hate this movie, but I don’t. I actually like what we’re seeing from it, and I hope the whole film is that same kind of creepy. It looks like Bryan Bertino’s got a really striking eye for this sort of thing.

Here’s what Universal said when sending out the link to the trailer:

Lock the doors. Assume you’re safe... The horrifying events that took place in the Hoyt family’s vacation home at 1801 Clark Road on February 11, 2005, are still not entirely known... Rogue Pictures has just debuted the theatrical trailer for the terrifying suspense thriller – The Strangers - starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman.

Check out the new trailer on Yahoo! Movies:

Also check out the films official website to really creep yourself out...

**The Strangers hits theaters May 30th, 2008

“Lock the doors. Assume you’re safe.

The horrifying events that took place in the Hoyt family’s vacation home at 1801 Clark Road on February 11, 2005, are still not entirely known.

Champagne. Rose petals. Candlelight. It was supposed to be a night of celebration for Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler ) and James Hoyt (Scott Speedman). But after leaving a friend’s wedding reception and returning to the house, everything had collapsed for the happy couple.

Then came a 4 a.m. knock on the door and a haunting voice.

Is Tamara here?

Writer/director Bryan Bertino explores our most universal fears in The Strangers, a terrifying suspense thriller about a couple whose remote getaway becomes a place of terror when masked strangers invade. The confrontation forces Kristen and James to go far beyond what they thought themselves capable of if they hope to survive.”

from that Australian movie Fortress. And I have to admit, I like those horror movie shots where the monster / bad guy silently shows up somewhere in the background, with no SCREECH sound effect or jarring zoom-in. Reminds me of a few shots in Halloween.

    by cuckookachoo

This sounds exactly like a remake of 2006's French new wave horror film Ils (Them). Guess since the studio dropped the ball with distribution of it, a remake can be made cuz no one saw the original. How come no mention of Ils on this page?

    by stevie grant

All these "horror" movies that would really only last a few minutes if somebody had a gun... they just seem lazy and silly. Guns don't help against clever writing, original concepts, or Freddy, for example. But guns are very good at shooting random jackasses running around in masks out in the country.

She says "Because you were home."

Which makes this resemble the above mentioned film Ils (Them) even more, since it implies no personal reason for this invasion.

    by medianerd

I thought it looked interesting until the whole axe through the door thing. Still might be some fun suspense if they don't try to go overly 'slasher' like.

As for Ils, Harry recommended it on dvd last week i think.

    by kloipy

how many are we going to get now? Is this the new J-Horror craze. We've got High Tension, Them, Inside, Vacancy(ok hotel invasion), When a Stranger Calls, i'm sure I'm forgetting 8 more, and now this one. We get it already. Let's move to something else now

Well, look at the genius. You'd have a point except I wasn't inferring that no one saw Henry. How you got that from my post can only be explained by utter stupidity.

This movie looks like shit, a fucking rehash of Halloween. "They're not ghosts"? No shit genius. Tell us something that's not so obvious.

For better or worse that's just the nature of horror. Pretty much since the beginning if something worked then several other horror movies would follow exploring the same concept until eventually we'd have a sub genre or sub sub genre like Zombie comedies. I'm not saying I'm always for the crazes (as much as I thought the existential Asian horror wave was a good thing, it really did get out of hand and now even the good ones feel tainted) but it really isn't anything new. Stand alone horror concepts are a really rare thing, which is largely (as the film really isn't that good) why I leaned towards Cabin Fever's defense when it came under fire on these boards. It's hard to come name several solid films that didn't kick off or follow up another film's concept. That's a big reason why Cronenberg is a god... other than the fact that he is A GOD. Canadian god anyway. Like Odin, with better beacon.

    by kloipy

Yeah man, I understand how whatever is popular at the moment is how we end up seeing 1000 versions of the same concept. And I'm sure the studios have a say in nixing new and inventive ideas as well. But if had the chance to write or direct a horror film I would like to think that I could show some backbone and fight for something different than just the same old territory. It just seems that not a lot of filmakers these days want to tread into something unseen anymore. I wholeheartedly agree with you about Cronenberg. There's a man who doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks. He just makes the weird ass movies he likes to make

    Not Creepy

    by dr sauch

It does nothing for me, but I could see how others would like it. The "Strangers" are just not that intimidating. I saw Scott Speedman holding a shotgun. I feel like this is going to be one of those movies where the victims do absolutely every dumb, clumsy thing they can to make the intruders job easier. Like falling over and or running from them instead of attacking. That is just frustrating to watch, not scary. When the villains have TRULY rendered the victims helpless or are cannot be fought off, then it's scary.

Looks good. I love that Halloween-esque shot of the killer coming into the background. And if you never heard of the French movie and knew enough to stay away from crap like When A Stranger Calls, this is new to me! Also, aren't these kids doing the stalking? That's creepy, and awesome. Shit, they got my $10.

Last time I pulled a gun...

    by ninja nerd

...was when 4 scary types banged on my door at 5:00 a.m. I lived close to a major Interstate at the time and thought perhaps they'd broken down or had an accident. I didn't know them from Adam, but I opened the door, leaving the storm door locked. The "leader" demanded a ride to a friends house. When I refused and started to shut the door, he let loose a string of profanity and tried to jerk the storm door open. At that point, the barrel of my Colt Python .357 appeared about an inch from the glass, pointed at this guys's face. Don't know if the look on my face or pulling the hammer back or both got their attention, but they basically flew off my porch. If you come to my house with bad intent, expect very bad things in return.

You loved this trailer huh? go watch a French film called "ILS" or "THEM"
THat is hands down the best home invasion film EVER made. But the producers of Strnagers know this, and im sure they will plagiarize everything they can from ILS.

point was they are set in a horror theme. as opposed to actual robbers. which would be a hellva lot scarer.

instead we get this PoS running a similar theme that we've see 100x before. wow scary.

yawn. the home invasion scene in A Clockwork Orange was more intense..

based on the book by Dean Koontz. I was excited thinking they had made it into a movie. So you can understand my disappointment when I found out that's not what this is about. But then I remembered the travesty that was Phantoms and decided maybe it is best no one has adapted Strangers to film.

    by frijole

before posting? Did we need 3 or 4 people all chiming in that the movie looks like "Them" (all worded in such a way that they were the first brainiac to poinjt that out on this talkback). It's one thing when a thread has 300 posts and you can't be assed to read all of them (though if you have a very specific comment or question, wouldn't it seem wise to actually look to see if it has been mentioned or answered already)... but this thread has like 2 dozen posts. You'd have to be blind to not see the multiple others already saying the same damn thing. Sorry, pet peeve.

    by lockeslostkidney

There. A subject line explaining it so we don't have to go over the same ground again and again.

That said, and as much as I loved 'Them', I'll enjoy this as much if it's done well. Let's be honest, most genre flicks rip each other off, but if it's done well I'll pay my money.

The I'm hoping the shot of them (hehe see what I did there) seated on the couch with the 'Strangers' standing over them suggests there may be more to it than a simple 'Them' rip off though..

good call. i recently had an argument with my girlfriend about owning a gun. guns have been in my family a long time but she doesnt believe in them. the combination of this trailer and your post tipped the scales in my favor. haha also i agree completely with the fact that if these ppl were at all competant and had weapons in the house and stopped fuckin falling all the time, then maybe theyd have a better chance of surviving an attack from three assholes in halloween costumes.
