JERICHO?? TERMINATOR?? REAPER?? PRISON BREAK?? The Hollywood Reporter Handicaps The Shows Neither Cancelled Nor Renewed!!

Published at:  Mar 13, 2008 1:13:52 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

The Hollywood Reporter’s James Hibberd has an interesting rundown of where a lot of the “on the bubble” shows stand. With the networks still reeling from the disarray precipitated by the writers’ strike, things look generally rosy for series with marginal ratings.

Here’s how the Reporter breaks it down:

PROBABLY BACK:
According To Jim
Back To You
Bones
How I Met Your Mother
Knight Rider
Law & Order
Law & Order: Criminal Intent
Moonlight
Prison Break
Scrubs (probably on ABC)
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
‘Til Death

PROBABLY NOT:
Aliens in America
Cashmere Mafia
Jericho
Reaper

The situation with “Jericho” is interesting because CBS shot the season finale with two endings – a cliffhanger and a not-cliffhanger – and network is expected to decide on the show’s fate before the last shot episode airs so it knows which ending to employ.

Read all of the Reporter’s story on the matter here.

    by z0d

I think I know what's wrong with tv audiences these days: They watch too much of that American Idol trash that is clogging the tubes. Oh, don't forget all of those other fluff shows that can capture the imagination of a two year old with no problems. It seems people don't really care about substance. Rather, they only care about the fluffy celebrity of their favorite people. Jericho has a lot of substance to think about. I love what they did in the last episode where Stanley had heart-felt gurney talk with his sis and then went Rambo to kill DB Sweeney's character. Jericho needs to go on. ___KNEEL___

    by ceejaynightwing

That show sould never have stretched beyond two seasons, it hit a natural end in Season two which they contrived into a third season in a ridiculous situaution where anyone with common sense would see the main character would be fucked every night in that jail and killed by the end of the week! Reaper is a hell of a lot of fun but US TV is becoming dominated by reality TV bollocks so unlucky if they're fortunate to get a second season, then I hope they wrap it up at the end of the run so they don't have to go through this fiction vs Reality TV viewing figure crap again. Thank God Journeyman shot a decent last episode to end what was by far and wide the best new show this year. The IDIOTS at the studio who canceled this show just emphasized just how little they know of entertainment quality.

    by greatczarsghost

They've kept the same format but the stories are far better than last season. Less feel good happy friends all being nice neighbors and more action adventure with stories that actually change things and advance. This season has developed very well. The other surprise for me is the Terminator show. I was expecting something akin to a Sci Fi channel movie or maybe Flash Gorden from Fox but instead have been very impressed with the quality of the show. The story has developed very well and they actually paid attention to past Terminator lore. This show also deserves a return. And last but certainly not lease, how could NBC green light the stinking pile of shit called Night rider which can only site it's ability to be even worse than the original stinking pile of shit which was only scone to BK And The Bear as the worst show ever on television.

"...than Jericho could ever hope or pray to be and it never got a second chance."It did get 5 seasons, over 100 episodes, as opposed to Jericho's 30 or so. Be thankful for that. Sure, it was a great show, but it is gone now, time to let go. If you spend your life comparing every show to Angel you will be constantly disappointed. Don't hate Jericho because CBS listened to the fans and brought it back; hate what's left of the WB in the CW because they let Angel go and couldn't care less.

I was psyched about the premise for Jerhico, but I hate everything about it. Chiefly, the actors are all lousy, including the absolutely horrible Skeet Ulrich. Jericho - damn fine show!

    by ninja nerd

The Jericho "haters" are missing some excellent. HELL, Hawkins is reason enough to watch the show. When the Ravenwood pukes showed up at this house to take hime to the Med Center, I knew those guys were toast. The dude is a stone killer. They take a very sympathetic character...Bonnie, the little sister and killed her. No miracles of medicine, other BS...she got wasted. And then, good ole boy Stanley just totally puts a long overdue cap in D.B. Sweeney, screw the consequences! I absolutely would have done the same; no speech, no discussion, just one to the braincase. Love it!

    Jericho rocking on all cylinders

    by altoandando

Ten year AICN reader here, folks. First post ever.

Anyone badmouthing Jericho at this point needs to STFU and go to hell. The show is finally getting to where we'd always hoped it would be... as someone else mentioned, this week's ep, "Termination for Cause," was by far the best of the series, and one of the best hours so far this year next to The Constant.

Watch it folks... it's dark, it's unpredictable, it's incredibly emotional. Yeah, it's "stylized", yeah it's got issues... but holy sh*t, DAMN if we don't get another season of this.

I didn't even send any frakking nuts, but if they cancel this now, there will be hell to pay.

they cancel Jericho...then bring it back due to "fan letters" or whatever...only to air like what 5 episodes? and its already not likely coming back? and whats worse is that they filmed 2 endings, like wow...they knew they werent keeping this all along.....what a lovely network, the actors and everyone involved must be proud.

    Jerhico

    by series7

just never interested me. Like I remember when it was coming on and I said to myself, yeah that'll get cancelled. And it did, then everyone was like BLAH! bring back Jerhico. And even then I was still like, yeah this show looks like its going to get cancelled. I actually saw some of it for the first time last night on acident, just flipping channels and stop on it. And all I could think was man what the fuck is this show and its gotta be getting cancelled soon, then I checked my guide and saw it was Jerhico. I'm sorry but not every show needs to be UN cancelled. Spend less time bitching about it and more time convincing your friends to watch it. It always amazes me though how little the general puplic knows about TV and movies. Especially if you live and somewhere thats not a major city. Like people know the really big shows and movies but my god telling someone about this show or something like Reaper is like trying to explain Evolution to a Christian. They are like WHHHHATTT?? There are other shows besides Sport Time/CSI/American Idol?????? I don't believe you.

    Why Bones

    by chutneylix

Why is it even on the block, thought it was getting decent ratings for Fox. Love it, one of the few crime driven shows that has good writing outside of the crime stuff. Hopefully the terminator series will make it back, like someone else said it really picked up towards the end and exceeded my expectations. Reaper is a decently funny show, just a bit slow in developing its story so it becomes a bit repetitive. And I don't get the Jericho love, but I only watched it till halfway season 1 and I thought it was a good concept that was as usual f** up by the lame talent at CBS. But with all this praise, maybe i have to re-check it out.

    As for Reaper coming back

    by series7

Is it a real SURPRISE if it doesn't? I mean it has Kevin Smiths name attached so it, and its good. But Chuck was better and Pushing Dasies seems like its better but its really not. All three shows have pretty much the same premise: nerd boy (even though all three leads are above average looking guys) with unique power doesn't know how to deal it or with his feelings for said lady friend that he has a history with, with nifty funny side kick (the only area were Reaper wins, I hope that guy, Tyler Labine, gets off of TV he is pretty damn funny) and a company of buddies/badass helper/bad guys (this is where Reaper Loses because Ray Wise was awesome (though i don't think he's as cool/good as Adam Baldwin) everyone else on the show sucked, from his parents to the other friend and Patton Oswald getting a pay check). Chuck was funnier and had more action, better plots. Pushing Daisies had a bigger budget and a better time slot, and has the band wagon effect. Reaper was the dark Horse and though I don't want it to go, I wish all three shows stayed on because they are all good, though Pushing Daisies was wearing Thin, and Eli Stone is much better then it. All and all had Reaper come out a year before and had some time to tweek I think it would stay. But coming showing on Tuesdays, after people saw Chuck on Mondays it just didn't seem as good. Maybe if they made it a half hour show as well, because it got a bit long as times. I could write a fucking essay analizying these three shows.

    by pdid

when they gave Jericho another chance. But whoever suggested the time jump after the battle with New Bern needs to be shot. The whole thing the show had going for it was he fact that they were cut off and fighting for survival. Now it's just them fighting against every paranoid conspiracy known to man. Hawkins is badass, but he's not enough to justify keeping this show on the air.

Will be back for Season 2 while Journeyman and New Amsterdam won't. All three similar shows a detective with a special skill (immortal/time traveling/money)help solve crimes in their own unique way. Why aren't their more shows like Picket Fences and Deadwood. Like neighborhood shows where there really isn't ONE main character and shit doesn't revolve around some final goal? I guess you could say Desperate Housewives is like that, never seen it though. Those shows are much more engorssing. Earth 2 was kind of like that same idea.

    by chutneylix

Actually now that I think of it House and Bones have more in common than type of humor. Both are essentially detective stories, the 'scientist' having a team of underlings to work with. Also the banter between the leads of Bones could parallel banter between House and Cuddy, or Wilson. Maybe thats going to far, but its a good pairing nonetheless. Also to the guy that said no one they know is watching Bones. I doubt anyone in the geek circle is a fan, none of my geek friends are. They scoff at typical crime dramas. It appeals to people who like the crime procedurals, except that it succeeds in a lot of ways other such shows fail (humor, character, lead actors' chemistry/tension)

Ironic that we finally get Jericho mentioned in a talkback JUST as it may be cancelled. Thanks Herc! NOT! Season 2 of Jericho has been incredible! And deserved much discussion on this forum as it has over on the CBS.com/jericho forums. Watch the show on the CBS.com/jericho website as its one of the only way to have your voice heard since they seem to want to only rely on the archaic Nielsen's. Its a pity cause if Jericho goes that will be the last TV I watch on a network. Back to classic movies and TV on DVD. And to the Jericho haters, suck it! You wouldn't know what quality was even if it walked up and offered to blow you!

The show has been firing on all cylinders this sorta-season. I was a bit surprised to see Goetz's body getting strung up like that on a CBS show, but it was a great reveal. I have really loved Jericho this year. Watched the whole season 1 and am one of those appologists that just has to say that the people didn't have a clue what was going on, and since they were down-home, take-it-easy kinds of people anyway, they didn't just panic and start killing people when the lights went out. They tried to keep it together. Season 2 so far has rocked all kinds of ass though, and I was one of the many voices cheering when Stanley simply walked up and put at bullet in Ghetz. I was suprised he hesitated, even for a second. Besides the torture of TREEHOUSE for 16 hours a day courtesy of my 3 year old, Jericho is the only thing I watch anymore. Without it I'm cancelling my cable and my son will just have to watch DVD's instead.

It's the kind of show that has to grow an audience, because it's WAY out there on the conceptual front. A horror comedy with Kevin Smith-style humor combined with FX-heavy Ghostbusters-style action? Not your instant mega-hit. Could have easily become the sitcom Buffy, and it isn't like CW is exactly cranking in the ratings with it's other stable of shows. Send Ray Wise out on the horror con circuit to promote and you'll have a built-in audience of nerds.

    by big dumb ape

If they spent the money and filmed TWO endings -- one a cliffhanger if they decide to bring it back and the other an actual "wrap up" ending if they decide not to -- then they at least are giving the fans something. They're giving them an actual conclusion. And it shouldn't necessarily feel TOO rushed since the writers SHOULD have been building to this ending since they KNEW going into this latest batch of episodes...this so-called shortened Season 2...that they could be the last JERICHO episodes ever.So I actually applaud CBS for giving us fans at least THAT, unlike the assholes at Fox who seem to LOVE canceling shows in midstream and leaving the fans completely hanging...not to mention the assholes over at NBC who likewise left us VEGAS fans out in the cold with a fucking cliffhanger that will also never get resolved.

Listen feebs... it's just a f***in' SHOW. Geez! Now I hear they're disrupting preview showings of Horton Hears a Who, shouting anti-choice propaganda because they think Suess agreed with them. That's right... they're disrupting showings of a friggin' cartoon because they think it teaches a lesson THEY AGREE with! What, there weren't enough Iraq war dead funerals to protest this week? Pigf***ing idiots!

    Keeping Knight Rider!?? WTF!!!

    by allykatd

How can they get rid of Reaper and Jericho and keep that stinking heaping pile of rotting roadkill called Knight Rider? That had to be THE WORST most inanely written piece of garbage ever to be shown on television. Andron, who wrote that odiferous pile of offel should never be allowed in front of a computer ever again. He can't write to save himself and he RUINED what could have been a decent reboot of a cool series.

    Regarding Back to You

    by fart_master_flex

In all honesty, it is ACTUALLY a funny show. I thought it looked lame. A throwback to the dying genre of shitcoms with canned laugh tracks. But it is honestly a funny and well written show. It is really, really witty. Plus the chick that plays the weather girl Montanna is the hottest chick on TV.

    Reaper

    by my pretty pony

I wish The CW would give it another shot. I think it got pretty good ratings in the timeslot after "Smallville" last night. I'll be a little surprised if they don't renew "Aliens in America" as well. It's critically-acclaimed and the only other good comedy the network has besides "Everybody Hates Chris". I don't know why "Bones" is even on the bubble. Don't think we have to worry about that one. I'm glad to hear that "Terminator" and "Prison Break" will probably be back. I think there's at least one more season of story to be told on PB. I definitely don't think the show should go past 5 seasons, though. That could really get silly.

    by crayon

It's one of the most purely entertaining shows for a long time.
Sure, it's episodic and formulaic, but so was Buffy and Angel (keep away Herc) pretty much, and like them it manages to keep the generally average baddie of the week stuff interesting with good banter while also hinting at a larger storyline in the background.

This'll bum me out if it's cancelled before questions swirling around the Devil are answered.

were fucking awesome. It's a keeper. Anyone who thinks it should be cancelled most likely hasn't bothered watching all of the episodes. Yeah, it started slow, but it's hit a good stride... Better than T3 by a ton and respectable enough to live inside the same universe as T1 and 2.By the way, you know...

    The biggest problem with Jericho

    by badger23

I'm one of those people that pays attention to a film's score or a TV show's soundtrack. Thus the biggest problem I see with Jericho is the music. It's absolutely horrible. Cheesy synthesizer chords and aimless electronic underscore. No themes or motifs. I know that the music is one of the first things to get cut to save money on a TV show but the lack of effort here does discredit to an otherwise tolerable show.

Lost and BSG are prime examples of how to do a TV score right.

    by itchy

Jericho is a show that needs to hit a groove to get interesting. They just hit the groove last season, and then "cancelled" it - just when it was all coming together. This year, same thing. The last 2 episodes have been terrific. If they cancel it now, they're even dumber than before. They need to just give it a solid season with full support.

    by crayon

y'know, that's not exactly a shining argument in the case for Jericho. Not to say that a new L&O or herc endorsed reality series that replaces it is going to be better... but taking so long to find their groove in the first season was pretty bad; but then needing it again in the second season after already using their get-out-of-jail-free card? How many more viewers can it afford to lose?

    by bizarrojerry

but, I too must repeat that the survival of According to Jim continues to surprise me. In an era where the "live audience" style of sitcom is basically dead, how does one of such poor quality continue. I know there's crap out there, but it's such a inane, lame attempt at a sitcom. Man dumb. Woman smart and beautiful. Oh, that man never learn. And Back to You is almost a parody of the genre...Can we stop blaming conservatives or liberals or Christians or whatevers on the fact that crappy shows stay on the air? People of all political and religious persuasions watch shitty television.

    Don't blame religion

    by thegreatwhatzit

for public indifference or bad taste. One concession: I've heard that Scientology reigns at the corporate level (Television). Again, this is entirely speculative, no concrete evidence. Bu think about an office inundated with Tom Cruise clones (closet-cloistered control freaks who are in denial that they're salad days are rapidly eroding). And everyone knows the punch line to Cruise's marriage (an act of desperation, circumventing his gay lifestyle to distract the tabloids. Every time someone allided to his authentic sexuality, Cruise would date a hotty). Should have been a real man and admitted it (deserves the SOUTH PARK kick in the balls). And what is THE ADVENTURES OF OLD/NEW CHRISTINE? Julia Dreyfuss? I thought she retired or was hosting a QVC network or whatever.

    Jericho has ZERO marketing

    by g8kpr

Ever from Day one, Jericho has suffered from poor marketing. I remember seeing quite a number of commercials and ads for the first episode. After that, it was as if CBS just dumped the show into a time slot and forgot about it. Then when the ratings are poor and they cancel it, they're shocked that people actually enjoyed it. So they throw the fans a bone, and promise that if it does better a 3rd season could be made. But instead they don't even promote the 2nd season at all, and I had a hard time trying to find out when exactly it was going to air. I had heard that it was going to air as early as last september after they re-aired the "important" season 1 episodes. But even THAT they didn't promote. If I hadn't been paying attention to the whole "Nuts" campaign, I wouldn't have known that they were re-airing any episodes.

I am getting pretty tired of this sort of mentality that studio's are so quick to ditch shows without truely giving them a chance. Market your shows, don't just abandon them on the airwaves.
