ScoreKeeper Wants To Tell You About Some Very Cool Film Music Websites!!

Greetings! ScoreKeeper here shining the spotlight on a trio of awesome film music related web sites that fans should become acquainted with if they’re not already.

All three have cropped up within the past year and are worth bookmarking for frequent and often visitations.

Are you an interview junkie like I am? If you love the verbal tango between inquisitor and informer then you’ll definitely want to check out Stage and Screen Online. The web site’s founder, Tommy Pearson, was the host of a BBC Radio program called “Stage and Screen” until its recent dissolution in February of 2007. Not wanting to abandon his audience, Pearson took his popular interview show into cyberspace.

At Stage and Screen Online you can download mp3s of interviews from various personalities from the film and theater worlds. Each interview is at least forty minutes long and best of all, they’re free! Currently available for download are interviews with Dario Marianelli, David Arnold, Gustavo Santaolalla, David Newman, Patrick Doyle, and David Shire to name a few. They’ve also got an exclusive interview with THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN (2008) director Andrew Adamson and composer Harry Gregson-Williams coming in the very near future.

In the world of film music there is nothing more electrifying or exhilarating than a scoring session. Whether you’re recording three or a hundred and three instruments, on the podium or on the couch, there’s a scintillating magic in the air when you’re witnessing the aural birth of film music.

Dan Goldwasser, the Editor-In-Chief of Soundtrack.net, has set up a dedicated web site solely to capture the mojo inside the Hollywood scoring session. ScoringSessions.com is chock full of color photographs and informative descriptors of many Hollywood based scoring sessions for film and television.

Some of Dan’s recent visits include Patrick Doyle’s scoring session for NIM’S ISLAND (2008), Joseph Vitarelli scoring the HBO miniseries JOHN ADAMS (2008), John Debney scoring STARSHIP DAVE (2008), Ed Shearmur scoring COLLEGE ROAD TRIP (2008), and Aaron Zigman scoring MEET THE BROWNS (2008).

Ever since my passion for film music started to blossom I’ve always been obsessed with what my favorite composers will be coming out with next. Of course, before the internet revolution you could only guess as reports of such specific information were non-existent. When the film music publication Film Score Monthly came along my favorite section was the upcoming assignments page which I immediately flipped to at the arrival of each new issue.

Now there’s Upcoming Film Scores. A spin-off of Film Music Weekly (www.filmmusicweekly.com), Upcoming Film Scores chronicles the latest scoops on who is scoring what and when. The main page is updated weekly with all the latest signings and clicking on “The Scoreboard” brings you to a list of hundreds of professional film composers and their current and upcoming projects. Have you ever wondered what David Arnold, Thomas Newman, Bruno Coulais, Douglas Pipes, or Javier Navarrete will be scoring next? Then you should definitely check out this staple site.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…there’s never been a more optimal or easier time to enjoy film music than right now. With the internet exploding with superlative web sites devoted to every nook and cranny of film music fandom, fueling our passion is only a bookmark away.

All of these sites are truly labors of love and I thank each proprietor for dedicating their time to bring those who are passionate about film music the interviews, scoring session photos, and lists of upcoming composer assignments each and every week.

Now go surf!
