Styrofoam & Moneypenny On This Weekend's STAR TREK REMASTERED!! It's "By Any Other Name"!!

Published at:  Mar 07, 2008 9:06:16 AM CST

Merrick here...

...with a shot from this weekend's STAR TREK Remastered episode. It's "By Any Other Name". This is the episode in which Enterprise is commandeered by a gang of humanoid Kelvans who are looking for a ride back to their planet...which, rather inconveniently, is in a whole other galaxy.

You may remember this episode by two of its more noteworthy contributions to the TREK universe. 1) These aliens have the ability to distill people's essences into little foam cubes that can be transported, pulverized, reconstituted, etc. This freakled the crap out of me when I was a kid - I used to wonder if Styrofoam packing noodles were really the distilled essence of of hapless punk who chanced across a Kelvan.

Also, this is the show in which Scotty gets one of the aliens shit-faced drunk. The alien asks Scotty what they're drinking, Scotty looks at the flask of booze, seems to have no idea, then replies casually, "It's green."

"By Any Other Name" guest stars Warren Stevens (FORBIDDEN PLANET) and Barbara Bouchet (who was Moneypenny in the original CASINO ROYALE). She's really hot in a "baby abuse me" sort of way.

Here are two BEFORE & AFTER images from this week's newly remastered episode.

The first pic shows Kirk & his team landing on the planet in response to a "distress call" (later revealed to be from the Kelvans). The second is a shot of Enterprise heading towards their home in the Andromeda galaxy.

I LOVE this first image...

HERE's a newly updated list of stations carrying the next wave of REMASTERED episodes.

PLEASE NOTE that quite a few alterations have been made to this list; some stations & airtimes have changed altogether. So, if you've been watching these, be sure to check for changes in your area (the airtime shifted in my city by several hours).

If you can't find a station near you, they can also be downloaded via iTunes and XBOX Live (where an increasing number of episodes are available in High Definition - the series is not shown in HD by many broadcasters).

I look forward to Sat to actually watch these eps of Trek. It's like rediscovering the series.

Also, that popular Star Trek band Warp 11, just re released their first abulm, Suck My Spock Some More. It fucking rocks!

  • Bouchet was not Moneypenny in the original CASINO ROYALE, there *was* no Moneypenny in the original CASINO ROYALE. She was in the 1967 version, the original is from 1954. Just because it's awful doesn't mean it doesn't exist. :)

That's the one where there's two red shirts

    by i dunno

A big black guy and a cute white girl get turned into cubes, one of them is crushed and the remaining red shirt is turned back and it's the black guy! No! The cute white girl was crushed and the black guy lived! That's why it was a groundbreaking show.

Does the original shot of the Enterprise heading to some distant galaxy look way more dramatically effective than the "new & improved" version?

Also, didn't Data recycle Scotty's "It's green" line at some point?

    its green

    by arcadiands

yes - data used that line, but i think they changed the color
And Scotty's line here is second only to Wharf's "THIS IS THE DRINK OF A WARRIOR!!" when he first tried prune juice.

Luckily, it really only takes five people to run the Enterprise.

    by andre the frog

You could keep the red shirts in cube form until it's time for them to die.

    by don lockwood

These images are by far the worst I've seen so far. The first one looks like the Star Trek Colorforms set I had as a kid. They just look pasted onto a digital background. The second one, the Enterprise looks all wrong. What the hell is it made out of? Where's that light source? WHERE ARE THE STARS?

    Re: "WHERE ARE THE STARS?"

    by bill clay

IIRC, they were traveling from one galaxy to another, in the empty expanse between them.
And I agree, the new FX are too clunky looking. I know they wanted to stick with the 'look' of the original series, but the should have done so much more. I'll watch it for free but I wouldn't pay for this weak sauce.

It's so 60s sci-fi. Pitch perfect I'd say. Beautiful stuff.

when are they gonna do TNG remastered?

    by ray gamma

Some of them "The Next Generation" effects were a bit ropey too, you know. They might wanna CGI a beard onto the early Riker, for continuity.

    CGI-ing the spaceships is easy...

    by i dunno

doing the planet-side landscapes in CG is hard. Because unless you're going to cut out the actors and replace everything else in every scene, you're stuck with the styrofoam rocks, skies lit in primary colors and shadows going in every direction that they originally shot. So the new stuff has to look cheesy, just for the sake of continuity.

Bouchet was in that MST3K ep"Agent from H.A.R.M"

    by tacom

I also remember Barbera Bouchet as the hot but kind of babyish looking chick in that James Bond knockoff "Agent from H.A.R.M." that was ripped on by MST3K. The funniest jokes are the ones about the henchman that looks like Prince and the henchman that looks like a preppie WASP! "Dad! Dad! I passed the bar!"

    Episode selection

Anyone know what criteria are used in their selection of which episodes to remaster in which order? Honestly, SPOCK'S BRAIN ahead of THE CHANGELING? BY ANY OTHER NAME ahead THE ULTIMATE COMPUTER? Are they doing them at random?!
