WATCHMEN Character/Suit Pix!!!

    by superduper3000

Iron Man is nice, but why no mention of the GLORIOUS Watchmen character pix??? Why??

Here they are, hopefully Harry will get around to posting these up! They're from Z. Snyder himself, so you know they're legit!! Enjoy!

by theredtoad

well is it? ...w00t white Robert Downey Jr!

those were posted yesterday - about 10 minutes after they first appeared on the WATCHMAN site - in fact it was double posted by Quint and myself.... I was actually first.

    Did Anyone Else...

    by gangrel76547

immediately think of the poster for The Rocketeer when they saw this? That's the first thing that came to my mind.

  • March 7, 2008, 1:24 a.m. CST

    by drave117

You mean the ones that Harry posted almost twenty-four hours ago?

  • March 7, 2008, 1:25 a.m. CST

    Damn, that's a fine poster

    by skywalkerfamily

    Get me one stat!

  • My problems with 'I am Legend', 'Ang Lee's Hulk' and the above picture. The director should have the guts to say to the CG dept : It looks CG ! How hard is it to photo a real armour ? Shouldnt be too expensive to make a real suit for the close ups (in terems of a studio movie) ? Cameron got it right 17 years ago when he mixed CG and real props. (Tippet's handywork) especially for the close ups. Sigh.

  • March 7, 2008, 1:28 a.m. CST

dang it, Harry.. you were too quick on the draw

    by drave117

Totally stole my thunder! That's okay. I still lub you.

  • March 7, 2008, 1:29 a.m. CST

Did this poster time travel from 1998?

    by FilmCritic3000

It looks like a poster advertising a Miramax film from the mid '90s.

  • March 7, 2008, 1:31 a.m. CST

    Where's Leslie Bibb?

    by DarthBakpao

This poster needs Leslie Bibb. I need Leslie Bibb. I need to see this movie right. now. please.

  • March 7, 2008, 1:36 a.m. CST

    It's a pretty good poster,

    by Juggernaut125

but I'd personally go with a frame shot taken from the end of the second trailer. With the tank already exploded in the background as Iron Man casually walks away.

  • March 7, 2008, 1:37 a.m. CST

  • March 7, 2008, 1:44 a.m. CST

    Hey, dumbasses ...

    by Tal the Reviewer

The poster is obviously inspired by classic movie posters painted by Drew Struzan such as the Star Wars trilogy, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future. It's a throwback, but a charming one and reflects the care and good taste of the people involved in this film. The only mistake they made was not actually getting Drew Struzan to paint it.

  • March 7, 2008, 1:46 a.m. CST

  • March 7, 2008, 2:47 a.m. CST

    The cast...

    by SarumanTheChef

You look at the cast as listed on there, and if you isolated that from the rest of the poster, you'd have no clue it was a comic book movie cast. Which is a good sign. That's the best poster I feel like I've seen in years; impressive looking without being silly. Makes it seem like what it seems to be (a really quality piece of work, a good movie that happens to be based on a comic, instead of a 'comic movie').

    Too much poster hate methinks

    by Neosamurai85

It's really more meh than crap. It's not earth shatteringly original, but at the same time it feels right for this film. The poster reads to me as saying Ironman is a summer blockbuster, which is what it is! As excited as I am about this film, I'm not really expecting to use the parts of my brain that I would for say... The Dark Knight. Maybe that's just because I'm not a huge Ironman fan like I am Batman, and thus don't understand it for the deep thinking man's comic that it is. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's mindless, nor am I meaning to talk smack about the Ironman. I'm just saying its more about blowing shit up. Blowing shit up with class and quality, but blowing stuff up nonetheless. So anyway, the fact that it doesn't have a poster as great as the "Why So Serious?" one for Dark Knight doesn't freak me out.

  • March 7, 2008, 3:14 a.m. CST

First, I love how they have every version of the Iron Man suit in the first preview. That's so awesome that its insane. Then I thought this was just a shitty Fantastic 4 movie that some cool aspects. Yet it star Terrance Howard AND Jeff Bridges? Along with Paltrow? Either this is going to be amazing ,or the producers have some shit on some big stars.

Its not too flashy, its not too dark, its not centered on JUST Robert Downey Jr., and it feels like a poster that gives you a feel for the movie. Good symmetry too. Okay, but Gwyneth Paltrow looks a bit odd, but I'll let it pass.

Meh to Photoshop montage...Struzan Art would have been cooler

    by KillaKane

Not enough old skool poster art around today, nothing compares to the excitment and dynamism of a beautifully rendered poster illustration (Bysouth, Chantrell, Struzan, Peak, Casaro, Amsell and Kirby masters all). Photoshop compositing can be effective when applied artfully but most of the shite out there is sterile and dull.

  • March 7, 2008, 6:04 a.m. CST

As much as I love Orson Scott Card, I am so glad they went with the original concept of Iron Man with Stark just being a smart, conflicted and motivated motherfucker with a fat bankroll. I hated when he was made a mutant in the Ultimate comics. Thanks, John Favreau and crew!

and this poster is fucking cool as hell! I'm looking forward to this although I hope they fix that cartoony scene where IM kills the tank with the rocket. you know a poster is lousy in design when...

    by cloudrider`

you have to add in explosion/fire and fighter jets in the background. it's called pandering to the lowest common denominator. direct to video actioners has that kind of poster all the time. looks like it took about 10 seconds to conceive and put together.

    I like it

    by Franklin T Marmoset

But, like a couple of other posters have mentioned, that same collection of images would look a thousand times better if it had received the Drew Struzan treatment. Jesus, that guy paints some amazing posters, and the composition of this is so similar that you can't help wishing it was painted rather than photoshopped.
Also, I am running out of ways to express my excitement for this Iron Man superhero comic book film. It's my number one pick for this summer and I can't wait to see it, but there's still another two months to go!

What's with the negativity toward her? She's an elegant, old-fashioned beauty, and also a perfectly decent actress, so I don't get the venom. I wouldn't have given her an Oscar, but I've liked her a few films, especially Great Expectations, Sylvia, Mrs Parker (a favourite of mine), and The Royal Tenenbaums. Anyone would think she was Jessica Alba bad from all the flack she gets around here.

If you step back and look at the overall design, there's a HUGE ugly black space down the middle of this poster. Better idea would be to commission some Marvel artists to do several posters, even some old timers like Steranko. Mix them in with new guys like Adi Gadnov. It's a way to tie the source material to the film and perhaps draw some new customers to the comic medium.

  • March 7, 2008, 9:21 a.m. CST

    by Franklin T Marmoset

Okay, buddy, I like your optimism - only two months to go it is.
I was reading the big fat article on Iron Man in this month's Empire, and it just got me even more excited. I love Robert Downey jnr's take on the character as, basically, a colossal prick. We need more prick superheroes, I think.

But I hope he stays at least a bit of a prick. I love those cocksure moments he has in the trailer ("Oh, yeah... I can fly") and I'd like to see some more of that in a superhero character.
Let's face it, if we were billionaire heroes with cool as fuck flying armour that shoots lasers and whatnot all over the shop, we'd all be pretty damn cocky about it.
Well, I would, anyway...

    by Franklin T Marmoset

That is a film I would probably watch. A bunch of super-rich guys with fancy mechanical suits that let them fly and blow stuff up and whatnot, and they spend all their time wandering around getting drunk and acting like assholes and pulling chicks. I'm not sure what the story is (maybe Spandau Belly can work on that), but it would make me laugh.
Renny Harlin is, I believe, attached to direct.

  • March 7, 2008, 10:28 a.m. CST

    You be the judge.........

    by Turd Furgusen
I love the fact that this looks like Rocketeer. It's the vibe I got when I first saw footage.
Makes sense since Zathura had the same kind of feel. We just need Arkin to play one of Stark's scientists named "Peabody".

    by Series7

Has been awesome. But this poster looks like some bad movie starring a rapper. They should have just stuck with the original poster. I now loathe when a movie I really want to see is getting closer to release. Because more and more crap gets made for it then is necessary. Call me a dick, but ever since Ledger passed away, there has been very little new Batman stuff, when it looked like they were going to start a new poster out every day. Which from a marketing stand point makes perfect sense. Too bad it takes the death of the star of the movie to get studios to shut up and stop jamming crap down our throats.

    re: messi

    by Neosamurai85

Fair enough. I'm not a comic geek and mean no offense to Ironman fans, but regardless of what Ironman is like in the comics, this film has been packaged the way I've said. We've heard little to nothing about a complex villain. The the redemptive superhero arc is almost as basic as it gets. Nothing about this film's trailers has indicated to me that I should expect more than a great summer blockbuster, so if that's the case, than what's the deal with a poster that tells me its a big flashy blockbuster. If this film is more complex and being handled wrong, then why are so many Ironman fans drooling over the trailers? It seems to me that it is giving people what they want. I'm not saying the film is stupid. Understand that I watch maybe 6 films a year in the theater and this will be one of them. I really am looking forward to this. When I say it's a blow shit up blockbuster, I mean that in the best possible way. Most blockbuster action movies suck because they are bad movies, not because they are blockbusters. This looks like one that's doing it right.

Looks like a classic poster from 90s. COOL!!!

    by ludmir88

but there is a cool one in, this one here: the french one.

    This poster kicks serious ass

    by zillabeast

Very nice throwback look to it.

Too floaty!!! MODOK has a BEER and CHEETS on its wife!

    by SpencerTrilby

Kidding aside, I have nothing against floating heads. At least the domestic poster looks better than the international one :

(BTW ludmir88, your link doesn't work.)
And I totally agree with Series7: they're really blowing their wad now that the release date approaches. The last trailer was nice (by far my favorite - the only one that truly pumped me up) but they screwed the pooch again with too many revelations and details about the plot. Spider-Man 3 all over again.
And as a life-long Shellhead reader I agree with ya too Neosamurai: the only shot that gave the movie a clever and "deep" look was in a teaser posted months ago (Downey sat down with his Power Glove, with his "intense" look on), the rest is clearly marketed as brainless fun. Even an old fan like me can admit it. The substance is here - no doubt about it - but somehow they chose to give it a manic, ADD spin that's not totally coherent with the way they sold us the movie since its inception. Strange.

It looks nice, but a Drew Struzan poster would

    by skimn

have been great. It like his surrogate character in The Mist said "They'll just photoshop some heads, thats all they do nowadays."

    iron man will flop

    by joel007

My mom knows who batman is. She's heard of spiderman. Superman... check. She has no clue who Iron Man is. This is Snakes on a Plane all over. The web gets jazzed because they're comic book fans and they then think that means 300 mill at the box office. NOt a chance. No way. And I really like the trailer and like Iron Man and hope this movie rocks. But it doesn't have a chance.

Looks like a Star Wars Poster

    by hoorayforeric does.

  • March 7, 2008, 3:17 p.m. CST

    Many thanks ludmir

    by SpencerTrilby

I had a glimpse of that one in another site, but none of that quality. Right click - save indeed!
The funny thing is that this is a French poster, and the poster isn't displayed in any major theater in Paris. What a weird way to promote a movie, especially in a country where Shellhead is an uknwown.
Since you've been a nice chap ludmir, I give you this: the teaser dubbed in French - strictly for the laughs (click on "haut debit" under Teaser 1 - Français):

  • March 7, 2008, 3:22 p.m. CST

Oh, another thingy ludmir (and others too)

    by SpencerTrilby

if you go to the link I gave and click on the "PHOTOS ET DOSSIERS DE PRESSE" folder, you'll find a bunch of exclusive pics (haven't seen them even on SHH or JoBlo).

    Se7en, what makes you think...

    by film_is_dead

they didn't have a real suit?

  • March 7, 2008, 3:33 p.m. CST

thanks for the link, the one with the chicks is the best

    by ludmir88

but has that french poster in a better size 1091x1400 (thats the one i saved) but you have to be a member to get it.

Still hate Iron Man from Civil War...

    by ComputerGuy68

Civil War put me off comics and this film. Civil War should have never happened.

  • March 7, 2008, 3:37 p.m. CST

Yeah, the chick pic is cool, unfortunately

    by SpencerTrilby

according to Favreau that scene won't make it into the theatrical cut. Gotta wait the DVD.
I personally like the shot of Terrence Howard as Rhodey. Nice pic too.

  • March 7, 2008, 3:51 p.m. CST

    by ludmir88

THE ONE WITH THE WHOLE BUNCH (RDJ,JB,TH & GP)LOOKS GRATE TOO. and the trailer ... i prefer the english version instead.

  • March 7, 2008, 3:56 p.m. CST

    by SpencerTrilby

you mean, about the chick pic? I see where you come from, but Favreau - in that case - said it was more a question of running time. He may be bullshitting us and trying to cover backward pedaling over the sex quotient, but I doubt it. I mean, who would make an Iron Man movie without chicks in bikini?
But yeah, MPAA blows. I mean, Indiana Jones and the vanishing Kalashnikovs?

  • March 7, 2008, 4:02 p.m. CST

Actually theres Two new Iron man posters

It's the ANH Star Wars Poster

    by ThePilgrim

It looks so much like that poste. You guys need to do a side by side and show how this looks like that.

  • March 7, 2008, 5:11 p.m. CST

    It would be cool if...

    by alienindisguise

Every comic based movie that comes out would do alternate posters featuring comic art instead of just photoshopped collages..those are way gay.

  • March 7, 2008, 5:21 p.m. CST

    ROCKETEER it is

    by thegreatwhatzit

Similar poster design. And, remember, THE ROCKETEER tanked. Big time. Supposedly, creator/artist Dave Stevens bought a huge luxury home in L.A., thinking he'd profit from "inevitable" sequels and merchandising. Oops. The p.r. office has obviously declined to promote (supposedly) a cameo by beloved, iconic radio personality High Pitch Eric. Pity; could add millions to the tally, right?

  • March 7, 2008, 5:34 p.m. CST

    by BringingSexyBack

I'm sure there will be diff posters for the geek community. They can't sell Iron Man to Main St. Joneses, they have to sell the cast.

  • March 7, 2008, 8 p.m. CST

Crappy poster--poorly done--movie looks great though

    by kevred

Why is the dominant visual element a big blob of blackness inthe middle?
Why can't it seem to decide if it's a photo or painting?
Why, if this is an action movie, are all the images so stiff and still-looking--no movement at all?
I've seen tons of cooler-looking images of the suit--why use this mostly-shadowed one?
Thankfully, everything I've ssen of the film itself looks terrific. This poster just looks like they couldn't afford to do a proper one, which in turn makes the movie look cheaper than it is.

    JIM LEE!

    by clone-o-mat

Anybody remember those collage promos and covers Jim Lee and Silvestri used to do in the 90's? This looks just like one! Love. It. And yes, I'm wearing parachute pants. Why does everyone always ask me that?

    Hey! I loved Sky Captain!!!

    by SpencerTrilby

that was a nice ride, with good chunks of fun in it. I'd be glad if Iron Man is half as good as the Kerry Conran flick.

  • March 9, 2008, 9:34 a.m. CST

Thankfully the bogus Nick Fury isn't in the poster

    by Monkey_King

Shouldn't the poster read ULTIMATE IRON MAN...SORT OF?!?!?!
