SUSPIRIA remake director is David Gordon Green!?!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I love David Gordon Green's work, especially his recent film SNOW ANGELS, which I saw at the '07 Sundance Film Festival.
You'd think this doesn't make much sense (the director himself says so in the story at MTV), but his work has a dark quality about it and in SNOW ANGELS there's a sense of despair and dread that coats you while watching. He's actually a pretty inspired choice to remake SUSPIRIA if they have to do it.
This is why I don't have a general rule about remakes. This is a fascinating director. It's like saying you're against all covers of all songs. If that was the case we'd be without Hendrix's ALL ALONG THE WATCH TOWER or even Joe Cocker's Beatles covers that I love so much. On the movie side we wouldn't have John Carpenter's THE THING, Victor Flemming's THE WIZARD OF OZ or John Huston's MALTESE FALCON. If you have someone with an interesting voice (literally for songs and visually for film) it can become something great.
Green says he's written the adaptation, but doesn't seem to know if he is locked in to direct. If they're going to remake Argento, then this is the way. If they don't want to go with him or someone like him, then leave it alone, I say. What about you? Do you think they shouldn't even bother, no matter who's out the helm or would you be excited to see David Gordon Green's version of the movie?

The only good thing about Suspiria are the intangibles brought about by Argento himself.
-
I wont be seeing this one.
-
that didn't turn out so well.
This is an interesting choice though. Isn't David Gordon Green a fellow Austinite? -
I'm really interested seeing as it looks like Green is making it a goal to direct films in every genre.
-
What makes Suspira great is how gonzo bizarre retarded it is, and the saturated colors care of Argento. I don't think anyone else will be able to do it right. Its not scary, its just bizarre and has a great color scheme. They're gonna hack out some hackery piece of shit teenagers-getting-killed thing that bares slim to no resemblance to the original.
-
Cant they leave nothing alone anymore!?!??!!
-
which REALLY seems outside of his forte.
-
does someone have to remake my favorite horror movies every fucking day! Suspira??? FUCK. I can get past Jason(even though I like F13) and Rosemary's Baby, but FUCKING Suspiria???? WHY?!?!?! It's a fucking classic, it's perfect as is. Fuck the writers. They don't deserve more money if they are just gonna keep pumping this shit out. I'm so fucking pissed right now
-
you should understand that we get all these remakes of all these classic horror movies and it brings up a generation who can only remember the half-assed version of a good movie. Yes, there are some instances were a remake is good (The Thing for example) but for every 'Thing' we get, we have to see a TCM or fucking Halloween shitty remake. You should know about Halloween man. Sometimes it's nice to get a breath of fresh air in an old movie, but Suspiria stands alone and doesn't need someone to remake it. Being a horror fan it just makes me sad as there aren't really many horror films of today that will be as classic as the ones of the 70's and 80's. I guess one good thing is it isn't being done by fucking Platinum Dunes...yet
-
DAWN OF THE DEAD was fucking awesome and we all hated the idea of that movie. Great film makers make great movies. Carpenter, kaufman, Snyder, etc. It happens. DGG is pretty good. We'll see.
-
There's a dozen like The Fog remake.
-
You remake something that strays so far away from the original it's not really a re-make. Just a riff on the same idea. You stick close to the original and you suffer by comparison. So, I'm past caring about re-makes but we all know the main reason 95% of them exist is to capitalise on an existing money maker which is a crappy start for any film.
-
if a site like this actually tried to take a stand against these types of motherfucked abortions, but alas... not here.
-
Please provide some proof for your statement that "[remakes] bring up a generation who can only remember the half-assed version of a good movie." This remake craze started what, 5 years ago maybe? What generation has passed that quickly pray tell? The originals will still be exposed to those who want to see them. It's not like it's taking anything away from the originals, and it's certainly not like these movies are going to get some re-release in theaters either. So barring the originals being destroyed and permanently replaced by a remake, I don't understand this extreme fear. I can understand people asking "what's the point?" but all this freaking out is too much. Plus, Green is a great filmmaker and only getting better.
-
I agree with you for the most part, but I also think that this title means very little to most American movie goers. Whereas most of the other titles we can cite carry with them a vague recollection in a sizable contingent of audience members. This one draws a blank stare from most. Somebody asked me if it was that movie with Shai Leboeuf movie. Its more like KNIFE IN THE WATER becoming DEAD CALM. I think they will have a tough time selling this mainstream.
-
when they take the premise of the original and veer off in their own style (Carpenter's Thing, Cronenberg's Fly), and yet Burton's POTA sucks - nevermind, I've invalidated my own thesis. So here's a different one? Why do they always try to remake good/decent movies? Shouldn't a film with a decent premise but shitty execution warrant a remake instead? Why remake a classic Hitchcock film when you could remake - i dunno - Manos: Hands of Fate? Also, I'm a late fan to the Argento movies (was 26 when I saw my first), but I love them like they were expressionist paintings. One could argue in favor of more classically structured fare, but there's something immediate and visceral about his films, from the garish color palette to the jarring music. Too bad I hear La Terza Madre is pretty bad. I'll see it anyway. Rant over.
-
Green has had at least 10 or so projects fall apart before production. This may very well never happen.
-
I'm talking about the generation coming up now. Some of my younger family members have talked to me about how 'scary' Rob Zombies Halloween was, and yet the've never seen the original.
-
..thats so true about Goblin.
-
remakes suck!!! Except when they dont!!! How about judging films on a film by film basis.
-
hmmmm... i'm very scared
-
And in the first post no less.
-
I've always wondered that myself... let's have do-overs on movies that actually NEED a do-over, not ones that are so good to begin with that there's almost nowhere to go but down. That said, Suspiria's power comes from the visuals, not the story or dialogue, both of which are pretty weak. So maybe the story and dialogue will improve, even if the visuals fall short (which, let's face it, we're talking Argento so the visuals will fall short). Hey, at least it's not fucking Micheal Bay again. I'm not as opposed to good directors remaking good movies as I am to shit-poor directors trashing and ruining good movies.
-
Micheal Bay isn't directing the latest crop of remake abortions, but he's leading it with his abhorrent production company, so he gets all the blame. And for above, I meant the visuals of the remake will fall short cause they're up against. Argento. That didn't seem as clear as I meant for it to be.
-
Unless "older films" are different medium than "newer films" your statement makes no sense.
-
I forgot about the original short stories in my haste to find a "good" remake example. Hell, sometimes novel adaptations leave out so much that you could make a second film out of the remnants (I might be mistaken, but I'm sure all the DeNiro Vito vs. Don Fanucci flashbacks in GFII were actually included in the book) Now I'm racking my brain to find a remake of a film that began as a film, and am drawing a total blank. And password.swordfish, no worries, I understood you and agree. Perhaps Platinum Dunes is avoiding Argento remakes because Michael Bay doesn't find them "awesome" enough.
-
Sorry. Thnking's a bit slow today.
-
Seriously, the best idea is to do what Roger Ebert suggested. Take movies that were successful, but flawed (The Amityville Horror SHOULD have done this, but was actually worse than the original) and update them while improving as well. I've always thought that Enemy Mine would be absolutely fantastic if remade, just get rid of the cheese and get a basic Hell in the Pacific remake in space. You've got that hard sci-fi idea of using a futuristic/fantastic setting to show you what humanity really means and you're set. As for Suspiria, the original just ain't that great. The first 15-20 minutes are awe-inspiring, as are the cinematography and score, but it doesn't have the impact it should. This doesn't mean I'm not an Argento fan, as I really enjoy Deep Red, but Suspiria could be riffed on in an interesting way.
-
Also it's good people realize this isn't a Platinum Dunes affair. Green said some Italian producers came to him and asked him to do it. These guys probably looked at how successful the original was in Italy, and how it never really crossed over to the U.S. (save for horror fans) and they see a chance to remake it with a good, visionary director. I'm sure a lot of it is about money, but if they're hiring the director of "George Washington" it can't be 100% a cash grab.
-
My biggest problem with most of Dario's films are the crappy scores. That's right. 9 times out of 10 they take me right out of what is otherwise a very engaging scene. Other than Opera's ending which was too cracked out for even me (a huge Miike fan), it would have been a great horror film if the heavy metal did not drain all the tension out of all the scary scenes. It actually makes many of his films funny. And yes, that even goes for his precious Goblin band. I know, I know... how can I call myself a horror geek and not over squeeze me tube of lemur lube, shooting a noodle of the fine all natural product into the air at the very mention of the great GOBLIN??? It will just have to remain one of life's great mysteries. Sorry.
HOWEVER, if there is one exception to the rule, its Suspira. The score that Argento and company made for that outing is fantastic, moody and completely engaging. Of all the Argento films that I think could be improved by a new score, THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM. So where news of many of his films being remade would be met by me with a comment of "well, at least it probably won't have a weird score that takes me out of every scary moment" I'm left wit concerns of it being Halloweenized as Rob Zombie did to Carpenter's great piano piece. As for Mr. Green, I've still not gotten around to seeing any of his films to have an opinion. Though the transition from small personal films to a big production like Suspira is likely to be a tough one. I want to see Snow Angels pretty badly though, as I get the impression his character work might give a remake the one thing the original lacked (and could have gained from). -
...I am really against a remake of "Suspiria"....and I'm not the biggest fan of David Gordon Green...but, when I saw he was attached, the first words out of my mouth were..."Ah, cool." Better him than some other douche-bag.
-
Just so ya know AICN.
-
David Gordon Green is the best young filmmaker today.
-
I betcha it'll be something like that
-
I actually see room for a lot of improvement when it comes to Suspiria. I can't stand the original, but I also feel for the actual fans too because really, this is totally needless and just drives another nail in the Hollywood coffin, even if it /is/ good, it's still blasphemous in theory. Do away..
-
Pardon my multiple misspelling of Suspiria.

Hendrix's ALL ALONG THE WATCH TOWER
Interesting choice for a director though. -
Yeah. I love Argento and the original so, personally I don't see what they can to surpass it. A dancing school for girls run by witches is a cool idea though and open to countless interpretations. I honestly hope it's a good one. Inferno is his masterpiece anyway and to remake that somebody would have to make sense of it first.
-
Everythng that makes Suspira so great is going to be gone.
The theme song... GOBLIN... is gonna be out of here.
FUCK THIS MOVIE -
Please, pretty please....
-
How 'bout THE DEPARTED. I don't think INFERNAL AFFAIRS was adapted from anything, but I most certainly might be wrong. You could even make a case for KING KONG even though a lot of people dislike it, which I don't. The list of new adaptations that are good is certainly a bigger list though. The fact is, as I think someone already said, good filmmakers make good movies regardless if it's been done before and done well. People should view remakes like a Weird Al Yankovich cover song, totally separate from the original and flattering that someone digs that film enough that they want to try and make it their own. As Kurt Cobain said, "you know you've made it big when Weird Al wants to do a cover of your song," so goes the same with Hollywood. Remakes and new adaptations should be treated exactly like original scripts. If care is put into it you can tell, and if it's just an attempt for the studio to get paid by using a known title then you can tell that also. To me, David Gordon Green doing a remake of SUSPIRIA hardly sounds like a half-assed idea to cash in. However, like I said before in an earlier post I thought the exact same thing about Neil Labute doing THE WICKER MAN. Best of luck to Green.

I don't see how you could remake a film like suspira period. If you liked it or not it was a unique movie, and any try at a remake would only share the name with it.
Personaly I have my doubts about this one. Most of the fun of the original for me (edits, colors, and goblin) would be gone. In retrospect I didn't even care about the plot, it was the rollercoaster ride. I have higher hopes for Mother of Tears> -
Before everyone says "there's no originality left, yadda, yadda..." Movies from the 20's were remade in the 40's and so on.
-
Suspiria, that is - I'm glad to see someone like Green, who is apparently at least TRYING to be versatile, attack it. It won't have the magic - literal/figurative? - that was weaved into the original but at the very least it could be a competent exercise. Which, sadly, is satisfactory as of late. Of course there's a lot of pooch to be screwed on this one, so who knows.

I was a bit disappointed in his Pinapple Express directing
by industrykiller!
It seemed a bit like any "anonymous" comedy director. I didn't expect the meditative nature of his other films, but it didn't look any different than any other Apatow produced comic romp. I'll wait to see how the final cut turns out though.

But nny remake success impinges on an understanding of what made Argento's classic tick; atmosphere is everything - expressionistic lighting, skewed angles, a ramping up of the occult elements and a good european cast of creepy looking antagonists. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HIJACKED INTO A GENERIC TORTURE PORN FLIC SET IN FUCKING NEW ENGLAND, IT HAS TO BE ROME! I think Green's track record suggests a good feel for characterisation which is a plus.

BLASPHEMY! Didn't we learn anything from the Wicker Man remake? Remaking Suspiria is like remaking Twin Peaks - wrong! I was sort of neutral on the whole remake thing until stupid Wicker Man. Stupid, stupid.

I mean, the thing about Argento movies is their wacky dream-like visuals and music, not so much the story or characters which are usually pretty inconsistent, although Suspiria makes more sense than most of his work. Why not just make a new movie about a dance acedemy that turns out to be an evil cult and save yourself the money for the rights and the backlash?
-
Remaking Suspiria is an insanely stupid idea. And wasn't Gus Van Sant also a "fascinating director"?
-
The Beef made the best point on here, a Wicker Man remake seemed abhorrent until you heard it would be from Neil LaBute the man behind In the Company of Men and then you were thinking, okay, still abhorrent but could be interesting, wonder what he'll come up with. Then of course it turned out to be as hideous as we all suspected. I loathe the idea of remakes. I know some people make the perfectly reasonable argument that in the theatre plays are "remade" every year and no one complains that "oh, they are redoing Hamlet, they'll never match the Paul Schofield version, why are they bothering" but film remakes bother me. There are so many original scripts out there that don't get attention because studios are too full of lazy execs who can't be bothered to read them or they don't fit an easy cookie-cutter marketing scheme. Sure, some remakes come out well or at least solid (i liked Aja's Hills Have Eyes, Snyder's Dawn of the Dead, Billy Wilder's The Front Page, Cronenberg's Fly and Carpenter's The Thing to name a few) but for every one that's good there must be about 1,000 that aren't.

Were you the one guy that liked Gus Van Zant's version of PSYCHO
by halloween68
Look. I'm all for remaking (or reimagining) movies that need to be remade. For whatever reason ... lack of budget, just plain awful, wasn't faithful enough to the book. Whatever. If it needs to be remade that's fine. But you don't go around remaking classics just for the sake of remaking them. Argento's SUSPERIA is fine as is. Just like Hitchcock's PSYCHO and REAR WINDOW and THE BIRDS were fine as is. Just like the original HITCHER was fine as is. See the pattern there? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
-
A Suspiria remake? Why? Why? Why? Why?
-
"..it musta been while he was kissin' you."

Has the potential to be a disaster too but I'm not against this remake. Worth the gamble.
-
Haven't seen her since Minority Report.

Because I just don't think you guys are upset enough.
-
I need to know the Necktie Killer's childhood. Stephen Sommers' Big Trouble In Little China: all those practical and blue-screen effects can now be kewl GCI. Tired of hearing Carpenter's Thing as an example of a remake exception. Lancaster and Carpenter went back to the original text and adapted that, not the '50s "walking carrot" film.
-
Argento like many other horror directors has a very unique style, SUSPIRIA represents him as an artist. It's a very personal thing, everything about SUSPIRIA was his expression. That's why I'll never understand how a director can remake a film like that, doesn't this guy have a soul? have a personality? have his own vision to create? You can't "remake" SUSPIRIA because there is only one Argento, I mean they mine as well give it a different title because it's just gonna be some shitty new age slasher movie with no balls. It's not even old enough to be updated with any new technology, anyway what kind of disrespectful piece of shit would dare touch SUSPIRIA in the first place. Absolutely regard other artists' voice, disgraceful.
-
Gus Van Sant's PSYCHO is one of the most misunderstood movies of the last (however many years since it came out).
I'm not saying it works. What I'm saying is that almost nobody gives it credit for what it was actually trying to do. It was not a normal cash grab remake like Platinum Dunes. It was not trying to replace PSYCHO for a new generation or "reboot" a franchise. It bothers me when people act like Van Sant was going for an easy buck, because it doesn't make any god damn sense. He just made GOOD WILL HUNTING and his idea for an easy buck is to make a movie where the very idea of it angers and confuses half the world? I don't think so. For an easy buck he would've done another feel good movie with Robin Williams. He was actually doing the opposite, using his clout to do something insane that he wouldn't normally be allowed to do.
His PSYCHO is really more of an art project than a movie. It can only work because it's a movie that most of us are so familiar with and because it is simple enough to almost be a play. Why do it shot-for-shot? Because nobody had done that before. What the fuck was it gonna be like to watch a movie like that? Watching his version is not so much about enjoying the plot of PSYCHO as it is about the surreal experience of seeing this familiar movie re-enacted with a different cast and a different look. And whatsisdick the macho drunk cinematographer did in fact make it weirdly beautiful. I would also argue that Viggo Mortensen (and only Viggo Mortensen) actually gave a better performance than the actor originally in his role.
I definitely have it in me to get worked up about remakes, but I don't really understand the fierce car-rolling hatred on that one. The movie didn't do well at all. It did not replace the original PSYCHO in anyone's minds of any generation. There is nobody that when you say "PSYCHO" they first assume you mean that version. It did not lead to a shitload of sequels or bobbleheads and lunchboxes with Vince Vaughn's head instead of Anthony Perkins. It was fun to watch once and find out what it was like to do a movie that way. My only real complaint is that he didn't have the discipline to make it quite shot-for-shot, he threw in a couple extra things. So the experiment isn't quite pure.
I'm not saying anybody should like it, but I wish people would at least acknowledge that what he was trying to do is not comparable to any of these modern day horror remakes (or even the ones before). That was an isolated case of the experimental art project remake.
As for SUSPIRIA, I'm on the fence. It seems like a bad candidate for a remake because it's all about directorial style. On the other hand I like Mr. Green's movies and having corresponded with him a little (he wrote the introduction to my Seagal book) I know he's a really smart guy who is passionate about movies and would definitely be trying to do it right. So if some motherfucker's gotta do it I'm glad it's him. Although having just stood up for Van Sant's PSYCHO I'm probaly not doing him any favors to be on his side. Whoops. -
Am I the only one who really likes the ending? I'm telling you, the whole buildup to the heroine getting in that room and the way she's taunted . . . I thought it was really well done. The middle of the movie was pretty bad, though - I agree.
-
If somebody made a faithful "I Am Legend" adaptation, would we be calling it a "re-make?"
-
I didn't mind the remake of Psycho. Didn't think it was great either. My only real problem with it is the sound effect when Norman is jerkin off. Just didn't need that
-
the original i mean, 'tis theeee most overrated of hitchcock's movies.
-
i gotta disagree with you, I thinking it's a pretty haunting film and I'll never forget as a young kid seeing the reveal of 'mother' that scared the shit out of me. Although, I had the book on tape as well, and the book is fucking great
-
and then try to remake SUSPIRIA? I think a little respect would come with that passion. If he wants to make a slasher film and pay homage to the great giallos that would be one thing. That would be honorable. It's like if Edgar Wright decided to remake EVIL DEAD, that's what this guys doing.
-
Cases can be made for other remakes of classics. WAGES OF FEAR did not need to be remade when William Friedkin took it upon himself to make it as SORCERER. However, Friedkin had already proven himself by winning an Oscar for THE FRENCH CONNECTION and also making the greatest horror film of all time, THE EXORCIST. There's even a case to be made for Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN. The HALLOWEEN legend and mythology had been bled dry by uninspired sequels. Zombie's remake, while not everybody's cup of tea, at least ventured to breathe some new life into the horror classic by offering his own vicious, twisted take on it. Now, I can't claim to have seen SNOW ANGELS yet, so I'll throw David Gordon Green some slack and give him the benefit of the doubt. I've heard good things about his other films. But I'd rather not see SUSPIRIA remade. It's unique, and I love it as it is.
-
...And the central premise for Suspiria was so little explored by Argento, so maybe. But in saying that, the entire appeal of suspiria WASNT the premise or story or characters, it was Argentos unique aesthics. So whats the point, really?
-
...The 80's was chock full too. The ones I remember, like Scarface, The Thing, The Fly, Assault On Precinct 13 were all actually good. Better than the originals as far as I'm concerned. To be fair, I saw the remakes BEFORE the originals. But I don't really have a problem with remakes, outside of usually wanting to see directors tackle new stories. But if we can get a market with both, I'm fine with that.
-
Impossible.

David Gordon Green makes movies about hillbillies, piles of dirt
by heywood jablomie
And they're not even good movies about hillbillies, piles of dirty socks, and windshields covered in bird poop. What that has to do with the mind-blowing flights of style created by Dario Argento I'll never know. Gosh, people are dumb. Check out the script for the Craven-produced "Last House on the Left" to see if I'm doing one of those Sicilian pantomimes.
-
Suspiria was crap! I never been so bored in all my life!
-
American studios' producers will fuck it all up for all involved. If it wasn't for the exposure and the money, I would suggest that they all run away from this -- even if Asia Argento is involved.
