‘Oh, My Burning, Beautiful Eye!!’ Herc Is Hot With Five-Star Love For Drew Goddard’s First Issue Of BUFFY: SEASON EIGHT!!

Published at:  Mar 06, 2008 1:02:58 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Okay, periodical-phobic Buffy fans, now is the time to locate a funnybook shop in your area and start snapping up copies of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season Eight,” overseen by series mastermind Joss Whedon.

Hitting store shelves today is issue 12, the first of four written by Drew Goddard, who wrote his first produced screenplay for Buffy’s final UPN season (the completely five-star Anya-centric “Selfless”), then went on to write a bunch of J.J. Abrams projects: episodes of “Alias” and “Lost” plus a giant-dinosaur movie called “Cloverfield.” (Goddard and Whedon also wrote a movie that hasn’t quite been made yet called “Cabin in the Woods.”)

Some of the things I loved about today’s issue, titled “Wolves At The Gate: Part I”:

* Buffy Summers spends the entire first half of the issue cavorting nakedly.

* Georges Jeanty demonstrates an admirable talent for drawing an unclothed slayer.

* As Buffy continues her nakedness, something kinda huge is revealed.

* This something is so kinda huge, I found myself fearing that the something might be proven to be a hoax, dream or imaginary story.

* This something turns out NOT to be a hoax, dream or imaginary story.

* One of the Buffiverse’s major character thinks it is anyway, at least momentarily.

* Remember that episode of “Enterprise” that explained why the ‘70s Klingons looked different from the ‘60s Klingons? “Wolves” hints that we’re finally going to get an answer to a question I’ve been secretly asking myself since season four.

* A character we’ve not seen since the early days of the TV series looks to play a central role in this four-issue arc, if not beyond.

* Xander gets to say “Merciful Zeus!” again, to hilarious effect. Willow, Andrew and some of Dawn’s parts appear in this issue as well.

* The season’s big bad, like the Cylons, clearly has a plan.

GOTTA HAVE FAITH!!

We finally get to see Buffy in thsi position and she's a frickin' cartoon.
I still think Twilight is going to turn out to be Riley by the way. He's pretty much the only old school character from way back that we haven't seen yet. Unless Glory's male counterpart survived somehow, we didnt' see him die on screen if you remember.

I'm enjoying every page of Season 8. The dialouge is spot fucking on, the characters feel like they did in the show. I'm loving where he's taking the story as well. Let's hope between this and Dollhouse, Whedon follows up on his promise to do the Ripper TV movie. Herc, what's the news on that or are waiting for some ruminations at the Paley?

    Joss Whedon fucked up.... (Spoilers)

    by mr. profit

I am a fan of Joss Whedon. Buffy is one of my favorite shows of all time. The Buffy character was well written and brought to life in a great way by Gellar. So to see the character suddenly going Bi is ridiculous. Its bad enough they fucked her over with the whole Spike fling. And even by making her work at the Doublemeat Palace, now Buffy is gay? Sure looking at 2 chicks get it on was the shit from like the 6th through 9th grade, and I have nothing against homosexuality, but I hate how this development feels forced. Like to shock us. Its just so random. Do comic books have a sweeps period like TV? Because the faux lesbian gimmicks usually appear on TV in May. Shaking my head... Glad I did not buy this shit. I refused after I heard Dawn was a giant.

    by jed

I'm as shocked as the next guy. However, it doesn't feel so much forced as it does something whedon always intended to explore in the show but couldn't. but now that buffy is portrayed by ink and not by a high-maintenence starlet, he can go there, as it were. You're really doing yourself a disservice by ignoring the comic if you're a fan, though. it's been pretty much a+ across the board.

When people describe what's going on to me in an effort to get me to read it, I sweat its
like listening to episode summaries of "Charmed". I'm a fan, but of the TV show. And SMG may have been "High Maintenance" since she didnt make friends on set and hang at co-stars homes. But she did her job. And she played the character well for 7 seasons.

I love Whedon but in some ways,he's a lot like Judd Winnick...he's obsessed with certain issues. Half of Whedons characters have either been Gay,Bi,or recently killed/returned from the dead. Switching teams

    by rsanta74

Even if it's temporary, Buffy's decision to "go girl" kinda makes a little sense. For a couple of reasons, actually.

    1) A castle full of women and nobody's getting laid? Believable? Not really.

Let's face it. Andrew might make it as gay as the day is long; That or he's got an affinity for his life size Princess Leia blow up doll. Xander isn't an option to 90% of the women, especially Buffy.

    Who's left?

    2) I'm not saying that its the norm, but lots of women do kinda experiment. Much more so than guys. Ask a woman if she's at the very least kissed one of her friends, even on a dare. There's a fair chance she might say yes. Ask a guy. Now, get an ice pack for that black eye. =)

    3) Being a slayer means being in an all girls club. There's something very Amazon about it. Guys aren't really a part of the equation much.

    4) Buffy's at a turning point in her life (again). She's no longer the one and only slayer. She's one of many. She's lost that connection to the outside world. If only for one night, to feel connected and wanted is probably better than feeling alone.

    4) "Gay for a Day" or "Gay All the Way"? ... Its interesting. If this had been Faith, people might not have been bitching as much. Faith is very much the outsider. I'm really surprised she didn't bang that crazy Brit Slayer from a few issues back.

To see Buffy do something so _personally_ impulsive, outside of battle, is new. Its not out of character so much as it's an exploration of who she is, who she wants to be, and who people expect her to be.

    5) Let's face it. This is NOT the "shock value" thing Buffy's ever done. Some might call banging Spike dumb and gimmicky, but there was some sense even to that - kinda like why a cutter does the whole razor thing.

Buffy has a long history of doing dumb things in her personal life. Spike was only the tip of it.

This will definitely come back to bite her in the ass. Nothing worse than a jilted lover. Well, a jilted lover with superhuman strength probably IS worse. Yeah. That's gonna turn out well. Buffy may have just created a new baddie.

Whedon may not have written this issue/episode, but he is still at the helm. He definitely wouldn't let the writers do anything with the characters that he wouldn't have agreed with or thought of himself somewhere down the line.

Some of you might not agree with this little plot twist, but it IS a part of her character now. It's not like it fucked up Willow's character. If anything, it probably added a whole new level. The fact that Buffy would even consider doing the mattress mambo with a chick for even one night is a huge insight into her character.

Suppose you're Buffy. Your mom's dead. Your town got eaten up buy the mouth of What once made you unique is gone. Hell. You haven't even gotten laid in 12-24 months, even longer for an actual relationship.

It's no wonder why Buffy's so confused. She's a college dropout with no job, no legally obtained money, no prospects beyond the next battle, no relationship, no mentor, etc..

Buffy is kinda in a fucked place up right now. Her latest conquest is a symptom and not the problem.

Great issue. Felt a little short on story advancement, but it was rich in character stuff.

This whole angle demonstrates in epic soft-core porn fashion, that Buffy still has no idea who she's supposed to be or who she wants to be. Buffy needs to get her ass in gear, or this big bad will take her down. Since the BIG BAD has to know that BUFFY is still not even close to the leader and the woman that she needs to be.

While this whole LESBIAN THING seems hokey. It does play into the part of this character that we already know: SHE'S FUCKED UP! Her fuckedupness takes a body count. Now she will just break another person's heart, but this time it's a girl. That's how Buffy Summers' rolls.

    On the nose.

It didn't make much sense to me, and I toyed with the idea that it was a gimmic. However, once I thought about it, and you put it very succinctly, it does make sense. They've even hinted heavily at how lonely (physically and emotionally) she is. They even hit us over the head with the fact that she's had sex dreams about Xander, and Angel & Spike. You take a young woman who's emotionally mixed up, lonely, and lacking physical intimacy over a long period of time; then drop her in a home full of girls... well, it's very possible for something to happen if she's got an open mind.

    by forget_byron

Well I am glad I check the review here first, now I know I am done with the Buffy comic. If a person wants to be gay, that's their business but I am sick to death of having homosexuality thrown into my face as part of the Hollywood conspiracy to desensitize mainstream America to it. I was disappointed that they did that to Willow during the show, but I stuck with the show because that was before you could go to a movie that was promoted as a comedy about a moron race car driver and then have to hold in the vomit when you realized that it was really just a devious way of making you watch a homosexual moment. I am completely tired of the in-your-face homosexuality that is going on, and so I now choose to add the Buffy comic to the list of media materials I will boycott to be spared that visualization. :(

OK, I should have reserved the jackass comment. I wish I could apologize to you, but I just don't feel right saying those words to someone so closed-minded. Yes, you are absolutely entitled to your opinion on homosexuality, and if you're not OK with it (as much as I cannot understand this position), that's up to you. But your claim that Hollywood is trying to desensitize people is ridiculous. Willow was not "in your face" with her homosexuality. She was a lesbian, she had a girlfriend, and it was treated in the same way as every other relationship on that show. If that was in your face, so were the other character's heterosexuality. What I reacted to in your post is the idea that any such relationship does not deserve equal treatment as a hetero relationship, which is bigoted. If I misunderstood, please correct me. The way I see it, Hollywood is absolutely FULL of heterosexual relationships. If a few people out there want to tip the scales a little in the other direction, kudos to them. I don't see it as forcing it on you, I see it as exposing you to it. If you get a little more tolerant as a result, I can't see the downside.

    another good interview link

    by oisin5199

    http://tinyurl.com/2wg4mb

This interview's more detailed and offers some insight in the whole comparison between the show and the comic, in terms of production.
About the 'gay' thing, frankly I'm not surprised. There's been plenty of buildup with the whole cinnamon lipstick thing, Buffy complaining about not getting laid and having no outlet, and the fact that at this point she's open-minded. Joss chalks it up to 'youthful experimentation,' though he doesn't use the word 'bi' which is curious (but not bi-curious). I always thought it would be a better idea to make Willow bi and not negate her past relationships with Oz and Xander, that Tara was someone that she happened to fall in love with, but I guess the networks weren't ready for that kind of subtlety. I think it was important for the show to establish that Willow and Tara's relationship wasn't exploitative ratings-grabbing (evidenced by their first onscreen kiss being decidedly unsexy, as it was a comfort kiss in the middle of mourning the sudden death of Buffy's mother). But with Buffy, the situation is different. And yeah, that was so 'in my face.' And by that, I mean I was holding the comic up to my face to read it. I always love when homophobe idiots say that homosexuality is ok as long as it's not 'in their face.' So keep gaying it up out there, but keep the closet door closed. Remember, it's all part of the Hollywood agenda to turn us gay. Because showing a healthy gay couple (not that I'm referring to Buffy's sitch here) interact as lovers (you know, like in life) is 'in your face' and must be part of an agenda to 'desensitize us.' Like it's bloody violence or something. Anyone who starts out a post with 'if a person wants to be gay' I have no problem calling a jackass. Good thing you did 'forget Byron,' because, guess what? Byron liked the boys AND the ladies.

Or maybe it was used to sell more comic books...

    by masulsa

    http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=4396156&page=1

My shop had way more copies of this issue than any other issue of BTVS Season 8. Comic book stores were told by Whedon and Dark Horse to make sure that they had extra copies of this issue.

That being said, this was a good issue. Why not let her experiment. She had been complaining about how lonely she had been for such a long time. Why not let her give in.

She did not do much, she let the other girl "do things".

How was the reveal going to be Oz??? Haven't you watched the episodes? Google "Wolves at the gate".
This episode had great dialogue. Also, the whole fact that everyone knows about the two of them in bed was great. Very funny. Xander reacting to Dracula at the end was also funny. His reactions to Dracula was great in season 5, I was very happy to see it again.
I hope that Twighlight is not Riley. That would push it too much. Plus, Riley is married and having fun going on missions with his wife. I think Buffy would have sensed if it was Riley.
Why does Dracula get so many great powers? Go watch the Seaons 5 episode with him again. Giles explains it fairly well.

I do agree with the poster who is tired of having the gay lifestyle thrown in our face by a liberal media. However, Buffy TVS universe has always done a good job handling it. Tara and Willow were great, and then Willow and Kennedy was fantastic. The episode where Amy cast a spell as part of her revenge was amazing.
This has been a decent comic book. It's not as good as "Y-the last man" or "The Sword", but it is pretty good.

    This was a good issue.

    by forget_byron

It's always amusing to me that it's okay to label a person a "homophobe" or some other slanderous title if they say homosexuality offends them. In other words, it's only okay to speak one's mind about something if goes with the mainstream. Notice in my posts I didn't mention my sexual preference nor did I label anyone who posted because I do believe that everyone is entitled to their own decisions amd beliefs. I do have friends and co-workers who are gay, believe it or not. That's not really the point though. I have made my point, and so I am through with this discussion. It's not like anything I say will persuade anyone, nor will anything said back to me will sway me either.
