ScoreKeeper Says Goodbye To Leonard Rosenman
Greetings. ScoreKeeper here with a heavy heart to report the passing of film composer Leonard Rosenman yesterday. He was 83.
Rosenman was one of the unsung titans of the film scoring world for many decades. Although he never quite received the attention or recognition as some of his contemporaries, his music was daring, provocative, explorative, and uniquely original. He was one of the pioneering masters of using electronic elements in film music and never shied from exhibiting his vast musical vocabulary in his scores.

His work can be heard on an extensive range of film productions including EAST OF EDEN (1955), REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (1955), FANTASTIC VOYAGE (1966), A MAN CALLED HORSE (1970), BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES (1970), BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (1973), THE LORD OF THE RINGS (1978), and ROBOCOP 2 (1990), to name a few. He also wrote a vast amount of music for television including, THE TWILIGHT ZONE (1959), LAW OF THE PLAINSMAN (1959-1960), COMBAT! (1962-1967), and a plethora of made-for-TV movies.
HERE is a link to wonderful obituary and retrospective written by film scoring scholar Jon Burlingame.
From everybody here at AICN, we would like to extend our condolences to the Rosenman family during this difficult time.
We’ll miss you Leonard…

the Gary Gygax obit?
-
...I guess I'm not the only one who never heard of this guy. Hello! Echo! Echo! It's lonely in here.
-
If, for nothing else, his *rolls dice* Futurama role, let alone the game that united most of us.
-
Especially being that all this week they have been reviewing the new D&D 4th edition rules on this site.
-
had an awful score !
-
I hope when I die my talkback is better than this one.
-
One must respect the balls Leo Rosenman proved he had to replace Basil Poledouris for RoboCop 2.
RIP, Sir. -
He did Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country. I especailly like the theme for Rura Penthe...
R.I.P. -
Just today I was planning a future double-feature screening of Race With The Devil and The 'Burbs for myself and my friends, and I was thinking about how good Rosenman's score is for RWTD...I love that movie, but that score is one of the few things that truly rises above the "grindhouse" nature of the whole thing...It's truly sinister. Now I'm all sad...
-
Rosenman scored Star Trek IV, not VI...Undiscovered Country was by Cliff Eidelman.
-
Robocop 2's theme sucked ass. He should not have replaced the main theme from such a wildly popular movie. Imagine how Empire would have sounded if someone had replaced williams and decided to do away with the Star Wars opening theme.
I love his Lord of the Rings soundtrack simply because it was the first movie that attempted it and the soundtrack was one of the few good things about that movie in retrospect.
His music however is very recognizable as is most good composers. -
Robocop 2 was an absolutely terrible score but LOTR was a really memorable score for me.I tend to think Rosenman will be remembered for his scores for James Dean's movies East of Eden and Rebel without a Cause.Generally I feel sad for his family but nothing....absolutely NOTHING will ever make up for Leonard Nimoy using him instead of James Horner for STAR TREK IV:THE VOYAGE HOME.After 2 terrific scores Nimoy fucking shafted the trilogy(made a lovely movie but...)by leaving Horner out.The day I bought a Marvel comic that had an advert for IV and squinted hard to check Horner was on board and found....~????!!?? Rosenman was doing the score.WTF? My geek red mist descended and never lifted. He got nominated for an oscar for that fucking score too.God,it's awful.Awful..............Sorry you are dead,Leonard. It wasn't your fault but fucking hell Robocop 2 and Trek 4 were terrible scores."Like pearls to swine" eh,Leonard?
-
He did Star Trek IV The Voyage Home, not VI The Undiscovered Country. Cliff Eidelman did VI, and a very good job he did too.
Rosenman made some decent scores in his time, RIP.
I don't get the lack of Gygax TB either, I mean they've had sneak peaks at the latest D&D yet can't be bothered to put up anything when D&D's creator dies? Guess that shows which one they're getting paid for.... -
That's why it's not on here. Why no love for Gygax. He was also on Code Monkeys (on G4) as himself as well.
-
I saw he worked on Barry Lyndon/ Very impressive.
-
proof that a bad score can't ruin a good movie. I always enjoyed the way robocop 2 was the same medly but somehow it worked on that film.
-
All things bright and beautiful
All creatures great and small
All things wise and wonderful
The good Bomb made us all -
I remember doing the exact same thing except it was for star trek 6..... I was preying Horner would return. here, check this out... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOP2GrF8hho remember, spaces :)
-
and his work on Barry Lyndon was magisterial.
-
That was a beautiful score, especially when he quotes the original series theme at the end. R.I.P, Mr. Rosenman.
-
Would one of you Black-boxers post the Gygax obit already?!?!?!?!?
-
Very underrated. He did a good job making the character his own with his score, especially considering there was already the iconic Robo theme from Mr. Basil Poledouris (may he rest in peace as well.) Check it out some time.
-
Thanks for the heads up guys. My mistake. I particularly liked the music played in Star Trek IV when the bird of prey takes off from Vulcan.
-
Trek IV's score I quite liked, as it happens. A pity the main theme it was a direct copy of his LotR one.
-
Wait, I know. He must have been a republican.

Indeed, it was a masterpiece of a film with one heck of a soundtrack. I'd never heard of this guy before, but now I think I'll check out more of his work.
-
I JUST watched the entire Apes saga last weekend, and was surprised to see his name replacing Jerry Goldsmith on the forth one...
Sad, sad news... but he lived a good life.

...will supposedly be added to the 4th D&D edition in a few weeks. We'll probably see that before we see a proper headline on AICN. Very disappointing.
-
His work on Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, with its primal "war drum" theme for the dueling scenes and its layers of classical and Irish folk music, is just amazing. On the other end of the spectrum, his score for Frankenheimer's Prophecy is also notably excellent and is, easily, the best thing about that particular big freakin’ mutant bear movie from the ‘70s.
-
It's the only Trek score that's been nominated for an Oscar.
-
Haven't seen Bakshi's movie in a long time, but I remember the score was damn grand.
-
Jerry Goldsmith's score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture was nominated for an Academy Award for Original Music Score in 1979.
-
My sincere condolences to his family. I found some of his work today, and enjoyed it.
-
Forgive me for being pushy, but there had better be some hard-working elves in the back room, cooking up something good.
