ScoreKeeper Says Goodbye To Leonard Rosenman

Published at:  Mar 05, 2008 9:47:59 AM CST

Greetings. ScoreKeeper here with a heavy heart to report the passing of film composer Leonard Rosenman yesterday. He was 83.

Rosenman was one of the unsung titans of the film scoring world for many decades. Although he never quite received the attention or recognition as some of his contemporaries, his music was daring, provocative, explorative, and uniquely original. He was one of the pioneering masters of using electronic elements in film music and never shied from exhibiting his vast musical vocabulary in his scores.

His work can be heard on an extensive range of film productions including EAST OF EDEN (1955), REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (1955), FANTASTIC VOYAGE (1966), A MAN CALLED HORSE (1970), BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES (1970), BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (1973), THE LORD OF THE RINGS (1978), and ROBOCOP 2 (1990), to name a few. He also wrote a vast amount of music for television including, THE TWILIGHT ZONE (1959), LAW OF THE PLAINSMAN (1959-1960), COMBAT! (1962-1967), and a plethora of made-for-TV movies.

HERE is a link to wonderful obituary and retrospective written by film scoring scholar Jon Burlingame.

From everybody here at AICN, we would like to extend our condolences to the Rosenman family during this difficult time.

We’ll miss you Leonard…

One must respect the balls Leo Rosenman proved he had to replace Basil Poledouris for RoboCop 2.

    Race With The Devil

    by josh acid

Just today I was planning a future double-feature screening of Race With The Devil and The 'Burbs for myself and my friends, and I was thinking about how good Rosenman's score is for RWTD...I love that movie, but that score is one of the few things that truly rises above the "grindhouse" nature of the whole thing...It's truly sinister. Now I'm all sad...

Rosenman scored Star Trek IV, not VI...Undiscovered Country was by Cliff Eidelman.

Rosenmann was a good composer BUT!

    by ttringle

Robocop 2's theme sucked ass. He should not have replaced the main theme from such a wildly popular movie. Imagine how Empire would have sounded if someone had replaced williams and decided to do away with the Star Wars opening theme.

I love his Lord of the Rings soundtrack simply because it was the first movie that attempted it and the soundtrack was one of the few good things about that movie in retrospect.

His music however is very recognizable as is most good composers.

    Err....well....

    by the true priapic

Robocop 2 was an absolutely terrible score but LOTR was a really memorable score for me.I tend to think Rosenman will be remembered for his scores for James Dean's movies East of Eden and Rebel without a Cause.Generally I feel sad for his family but nothing....absolutely NOTHING will ever make up for Leonard Nimoy using him instead of James Horner for STAR TREK IV:THE VOYAGE HOME.After 2 terrific scores Nimoy fucking shafted the trilogy(made a lovely movie but...)by leaving Horner out.The day I bought a Marvel comic that had an advert for IV and squinted hard to check Horner was on board and found....~????!!?? Rosenman was doing the score.WTF? My geek red mist descended and never lifted. He got nominated for an oscar for that fucking score too.God,it's awful.Awful..............Sorry you are dead,Leonard. It wasn't your fault but fucking hell Robocop 2 and Trek 4 were terrible scores."Like pearls to swine" eh,Leonard?

    @Seany-Wan

    by photoboy

He did Star Trek IV The Voyage Home, not VI The Undiscovered Country. Cliff Eidelman did VI, and a very good job he did too.

Rosenman made some decent scores in his time, RIP.

I don't get the lack of Gygax TB either, I mean they've had sneak peaks at the latest D&D yet can't be bothered to put up anything when D&D's creator dies? Guess that shows which one they're getting paid for....

    RoboCop 2 soundtrack...

    by theoyboy

Very underrated. He did a good job making the character his own with his score, especially considering there was already the iconic Robo theme from Mr. Basil Poledouris (may he rest in peace as well.) Check it out some time.

    Barry Lyndon and Prophecy

    by bswise

His work on Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, with its primal "war drum" theme for the dueling scenes and its layers of classical and Irish folk music, is just amazing. On the other end of the spectrum, his score for Frankenheimer's Prophecy is also notably excellent and is, easily, the best thing about that particular big freakin’ mutant bear movie from the ‘70s.
