DRAGONBALL Won't Roll Into Theaters This Year!!

Published at:  Mar 05, 2008 8:20:41 AM CST

Merrick here...

Given the negativity swirling around this project, it's a safe bet most of you won't be too upset to hear that release of the live-action DRAGONBALL feature film has postponed.

Originally set to hit screens this August, it seems the film won't make it to theaters 'till April of next year.

So says THIS REPORT at Coming Soon.

The film is written & directed by James Wong, a writer and/or producer and/or director of projects like SPACE: ABOVE AND BEYOND, THE X-FILES, MILLENNIUM, THE ONE, and two of the FINAL DESTINATIONs.

There's an American Dragonball Ball movie coming out?

    by brandongk

Why? Who even cares about it other than Anime nerds? It's pretty much outlived it's cultural relevance (in this country) by almost a decade.

    by betasword

Well, it's not so much of a bad news, as I actually didn't expect it for this year.
I only hope, that they're translating Dragonball good enough into a Live-Action-Movie.
And, please, guys don't expect too much, like some did with Transformers in case of Story.

Dragonball is gay. This movie will be gay. If you like it you're gay. Not everything is gay though. Some things are stupid. And some things are both stupid AND gay. This is one of them.

    by franklin t marmoset

Shouldn't they be saving this up for fifteen or twenty years from now, so they can cash in on the nostalgia factor with a live action film that doesn't even have to be good or make sense or have relatable human characters or believable effects or comprehensible action scenes (ie: the model recently used to great success by Transformers)? Also, you all know that coming to a theatre near you in summer 2018 is a live action Pokemon film. Vern is going to HATE it.

I don't know what to think yet.

    by professor murder

I've never followed the realm of Dragonball, Dragonball Z, or any other Dragonball 'somethings' that have come out, but if we know anything about movies, it's that a postponement in production is better than a rushed product.

This way, not EVERYBODY will think it's lame. I still don't know how they are going to translate this into a movie.

From what I remember, it was always some spikey hair dude fighting another spikey hair dude. Someone loses, move on to the next dude.

We'll see if this is just a special effects movie, or with the postponement, they'll actually implement a good story(or translate the original into a well made movie form).

    June deadline strike affecting this?

    by professor murder

I wonder if the looming actor strike has any part to do with this.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23479412/

I am getting really pissed at this years strikes cancelling and delaying shows that I injected my time into watching. Some of the shows that got cancelled were good and would still be around if the writers never went on strike.

Now the actors of TV and movies want to strike???!!

I guess we're destined to not be entertained too much this year. At least we have some blockbusters coming out for the Summer, right? But it could be a really lame holiday season and more.

    by zephyr1988

For a project this big, only four months to do the special effects and CGI was moronic. And it had to face STAR WARS for God's sake; it would've been suicide. April 3rd is a better spot and its second weekend is Easter Weekend, so it'll have that going for it. Call it stubbornness (I was a DBZ otaku, but not one of the psychotic ones), but I'm looking forward to this. If only because of Chow's influence.

The way people are talking about this like it was an actual movie or something just cracks me up! Dragonball!? Give me a fucking break! Yeah, they're going back to finesse the script a little...trying to do justice to the source material...blah blah blah! Fuck this soul-crushingly generic, factory produced tripe. Most anime (of course there are exceptions such as Studio Ghibli and stuff like Paprika) is bland, lowest-common-denominator garbage aimed at imagination deficient robot-people with no sense of individuality. Oh, but it's got Chow-Yun Fat in it! You know, the guy from Anna and the King? Everything that guy does is good! How far off can Kool-Aid: The Movie be? Or Power Soaker: Deadly When Wet.

    by dr sauch

This is DBZ. But what we CAN hope to expect is a live action movie with intensity seldom before seen. What people fail to realize about DBZ is that it chronicles the evolution of THE MOST POWERFUL BEINGS IN THE UNIVERSE, and it does it without going to a dark place. The show was goofy, the show was funny, and the battle scenes were intesnse beyond belief. I just hope they pick the right villian to use. Piccolo became a bad-ass good guy, and I hope they don't make him the villian. Maybe Cell would be good.

...I have ever read on this site. I like to imagine that the quote eminates from a fat boy with messy hair and giant framed brown coke bottle glasses. With fast food stains on his thighs from wiping his grubby, sweaty hands off on his pants as he excitedly awaits the next episode of his favourite, poorly produced, lazily slapped together cartoon aimed at 6 year old boys; "What people fail to realize about DBZ is that it chronicles the evolution of THE MOST POWERFUL BEINGS IN THE UNIVERSE!"

    by jimmay

He'd explain every twist and nuance, completely oblivious to the fact no one was listening. I'd be reading something or watching television just clearly not giving a crap, but he'd just keep going and going. Huh. Now that I think about it that's a pretty good metaphor for the show, an endless, dry story that keeps going and going even though most people don't give a crap and aren't listening.

    by drath

First, I think the cartoon show, which I never liked very much, will translate to film about as easily as Super Mario Brothers...but is the negativity all from purist (ie, crazy) fans or from people just sick of the DBZ concept? Or both?
