SPEED RACER go-go-goes IMAX!

Published at:  Mar 05, 2008 1:39:13 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The Trades today confirm the scoop that the good folks at FirstShowing.net got on Monday that SPEED RACER will be simultaneously released on IMAX as well as it's regular theatrical run come May 9th. So, big Wachowski action again. More movies on IMAX, I say. THE DARK KNIGHT and uh... KUNG FU PANDA... are not enough! Why no IRON MAN?!?

Thoughts?

i loathe the matrix sequels as much as the next guy, but these two dudes still have more imagination and talents than the guys who did elf, transporter, jumper, combined!

you guys tend to forget that these two are also the same guys who wrote and directed bound and the first matrix.

these two are the only ones i'm betting on this year. ironman is directed by the guy who did elf. there'll be some fun moments, but that's all it'll offer. favreau has no strong story sense. indiana jones belongs in the past, no reason to dug him back from the grave for this generation.

    The preview of Dark Knight

    by malificus

during I Am Legend was awesome, but what a lot of people don't appreciate is the film has to be shot with IMAX camera's during production and not with conventional cameras and just slapped on a huge screen. I Am Legend didn't benefit one bit from being on IMAX, but the openeing sequence from Dark Knight gliding over the rooftops sold me immediately on accepting nothing less when I go see DK.
Speed will be fun, too much CG to benefit from IMAX I'd wager.

WB loves IMAX! And so do I!

    by zardoz

WB releases most of their movies on IMAX day and date now. They know it's a money-making venture, and worth the extra costs for prints. IMAX is getting cheaper to produce and there will be more theaters in the next several years. IMAX is the wave of the future: a unique movie-going experience that can't be replicated at home. So people, like me, are willing to pay a premium price for the IMAX thrill-ride. And it's worth every penny! And I'll see almost any movie in IMAX, too! I wasn't really planning on seeing Speed Racer, but now that it's in IMAX, I'll definitely go see it. I've seen the last 3 Harry Potter movies, Spider-Man 2 & 3, Matrix 2 & 3, 300, Batman Begins, Spiderwick Chronicles, and many others in IMAX and it's incredible! The other studios should follow WB's lead and relese more of their films in IMAX, too. After all, it's the look and sound of perfect!

    by moviemenace

For Speed Racer? Yeah. This is the way to go, I would think. It's a movie basically built in a computer so you will not get all the grain from blowing up a 35mm image.
But a friend tells me that the quick cuts fuck up movies for all of us in IMAX since our eyes can't take in all the information. Is this still true?

The Wachowskis have a record of 2 and 2, as far as I can tell, and I'd love it if they got themselves another win with this Speed Racer business.Remember how great it seemed when The Matrix was first released and it seemed like a major new talent in the action genre had arrived? That doesn't happen too often. I know they pissed much of that good will away with the sequels, but it sure would be nice to see them get it right again.Come on, Wachowski types, I've got my fingers crossed for you, buddies, although I will not be watching your new film in IMAX. That shit is too big. Am I only one who want to sit a reasonable distance from the screen and actually be able to see what's going on? And would it kill them to let us smoke?

Gary Gygax was a true mensch. I met him because I was driving across country and had heard fable and legend that he was one of those guys where you could just knock on the door, and you'd be greeted and welcomed inside for something to eat, and if you said, "so can we play?" and he would drop a D&D session right on you while you sat at his dinette table.

I dared not intrude that far, but I pulled up and there were three other cars already there, and several people by the mailbox. I said 'hi' shook hands, got my copy of the Fiend Folio autographed, and drove on.
Unlike the bastard Sir Alec Guinness who spit on his fans with fibrous regularity, Gary enjoyed his fans. The astigmatism of being labeled a 'role playing nerd' aside, he was indeed a true mensch. The word literally means, 'a real soul' or 'a real person' but you simply cannot translate it properly.
He was simply a real person; and a real soul.

Ok, listen fuckers. Matrix sequels definitely were lacking in more ways than one. But, the Wachowskis Produced V for Vendetta and that kicked more ass than Natalie Portman's behind in The Darjeeling Limited. This movie is going to at least tend to my immature side and i am completely ok with that.

    by bouncy x

i cant speak for 3D cuz my theater doesnt have it but regular IMAX isnt that impressive. I saw both Transformers and I Am Legend that way and i actually saw Transformers in a normal theater first and seriously, aside from a bigger slightly better picture and louder sound, its not all that different. I was expecting it to be completely different and play with my senses the way IMAX theaters do in museums but no, its basically the difference between HD and regular DVD, its a better picture for sure but its not a jaw dropping experience. they charge almost 5$ more for IMAX movies here and i dont know why.

The Mach V vs. the Mach VI

    by ye not guilty

Unfortunately, going by the toys that were seen at Toy Fair, it appears that the Mach V is either abandoned or destroyed during the movie, and replaced with a much shittier Mach VI. I hope, however, that my expectations will prove wrong. Maybe Speed is racing the Mach VI in the beginning of the movie, and it gets wrecked, leading Speed to go back to his trusty Mach V? I hope so - the Mach VI lloks like crap.

    DUMB FILM

    by filmgenius

Am i intruly the only member of this that is in thinking whcih the watchowski brothers should be making less baby films. the matrix was mildly unkiddish, but please, i am meaning--they are of the uppermost directors in hollywood (which is a thing that is in it of itself bad). I HAPPEN to have go to film school for several years and am considered one of the experst of film in my field area. i sincerely am of the believement that they are directors capable of being as good as the french, who in my opinion are were making the only good film in history. do the talkbakcers in agreeing with me?

    by homer40

Yea, I said it. The same year, David Cronenberg released the far superior Existenz, which dealt with many of the same issues, but resolved them without resorting to endless karate and shootouts. That being said, I am kind of looking forward to Speed Racer. I think one of the problems with IMAX films ported from regular releases is that the aspect ratio is different. The IMAX screen is big, but it is almost square. You lose a substantial amount of information when you watch a 2.35/1 movie in IMAX. I actually prefer Digital 3D to IMAX 3D. If you are ever in the Big Apple (New York to you losers who live in the middle of the country)check to see if there is a Digital 3D movie playing at the Ziegfeld. Then you get the biggest screen in NYC, and 3D, and the correct aspect ratio. Oh, and Indy looks awesome.

Are all like, awwww nawwww dwag! It was a little pitchy. Whimpering about a Speed Racer movie. Really? Boo Hoo on your beloved Speed Racer series? REALLY? Someone holds that show to that high of steam? I think when they make cartoons into live action movies, its better when they do it to so-so cartoons rather then cough cough Transformers. I don't think many geeks were crying in there mamas tatas in the back of their pick up about the basterization of their childhood with this movie. It looks cool. If you shut your mouth during the year of ought seven where Jason Lee proved that not only does he not give a shit about his kid being normal, he also only cares about money. Then you have no right to nay say anything of this movie. This movie may suck balls (HIGHLY doubt it, with a perfect release date of the greatest day of the year??? If only Sgt. Joe Gavilan could've been so lucky with his comeback movie) but at least it looks like they tried to make the shit look cool and cartoony. So put on your red dress, fucking man up and smoke some weed (i feel that not enough of the TB'ers on this site do), and enjoy another Wachowski sisters event and hope that they don't end up winning an Oscar by copying themselves like them other famous brothers. NO not the polish twins you twat.

existentz was "far superior"??? riiight. just because it doesnt resort to karate doesnt make it a better movie. the matrix has deeper themes, dealt with far more ranging issues if you care to peel through the layers. plus, exitentz's plot is repetitive and frankly, boring; how many 'your ally turn out to be the traitor' plot points can you have in one movie?
