AICN & Fantastic Fest present: Stephen Chow's CJ7 this THURSDAY at ALAMO VILLAGE - here's an early clip!

Published at:  Mar 04, 2008 2:18:14 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... I've seen Stephen Chow's CJ7 - and it is an utterly delightful film... really and truly wacky insane. This isn't like E.T. - where the alien lands on a normal Earth... in fact - CJ7 isn't even necessarily an alien - as you'll see... Instead the "CJ7" lands in a Stephen Chow universe of gigantic monstrous John Henry sized children. Characters that are hilariously drawn. I really really loved this little film. And had to immediately set into motion bringing it here for all my local film geek friends to see. And for the rest of you that can not attend... here's a special treat just for AICN...

Ain't It Cool News and Fantastic Fest present CJ7
is confirmed for Thursday 7 PM - Village. RSVP at
this location immediately!

Fantastic Fest badge holders get first crack and can RSVP until midnight tonight.
RSVPs are for up to 2 tickets.

After that - non-badge holders can RSVP.

Love the Chow, love him... even though Kung Fu Hustle was one of the strangest things I've ever seen.

That said, it'll be interesting to see him go Hollywood in what looks like his version of (dare I say it?) Flubber...

I love, love, love Chow's movies, but...

    by burgundy82

...the last 10-15 minutes always have me rolling my eyes a little bit. It's like everything goes a liiiiiittle too far there at the end. Look, I know the Chowneverse isn't exactly high on realism, but sometimes the guy doesn't even play by Tex Avery's (very very loose) laws of physics. It's like, what the fuck man, why not just have everybody suddenly float up into space and finish that climactic battle on the moon, oh and by the way they can all throw dragons at each other made out of fire and there's a fat guy who can fart daggers at you.

Weird, but from what I've seen it doesn't matter. Seems like a little boy anyway... And chow is a genius. I wish I could see it early.

Harry, that line is hilarious. Im sure I wont see anything in the movie that quite does it justice. I just wish I knew exactly what you were referencing. This does look like a good time. Also, Harry, Im assuming since none of the AICN staff have remotely come to the defense of 10,000 B.C. is it safe to deduce that it isn't even entertainingly bad(which is all I was hoping for to begin with)?

...Not that its not a cool flick for the under ten crowd, but its certainly got nothing in it for anyone whose passed puberty. I'd put it on par with Mac and Me.

    OK....OK....for real now......

    by samwise ganja

first off, kung fu hustle was far superior to shaolin soccer.....it HAD to be because it was more or less a direct EVOLUTION of chow's storytelling and style....i loved both....second of all i am sick and fucking tired of assholes on this sight that seem to wander into whatever post they see and shitting on things seemingly for the sake of it.....(even though i COMPLETELY understand that that is what sites like this AND the internet itself AND freedom of speech all exist for......god bless america)...its people like you that make inspiring film makers maybe sit bak on that "out there" or "whimsical" or perhaps even an idea that includes "everybody suddenly float(ing) up into space and finish(ing) that climactic battle on the moon, oh and by the way they can all throw dragons at each other made out of fire and there's a fat guy who can fart daggers at you."....maybe there are people out there, INTELLIGENT, IMAGINATIVE people who dig that shit that may indeed DIG THAT SHIT......sorry for yelling but got this is killing me.....most of you people bitching at chows wackiness probably loved transformers and lotr both......both now and when you were 8......hypocrites....

I like both as well, but I just felt that Kung Fu Hustle lacked the heart that Shaolin Soccer had. The entire romantic subplot in Hustle just felt so forced, too. Also, Chow's character in Soccer is so much more likable than the one he plays in Hustle.

And don't let the "shitters" get to you. They deserve our pity.

    by picardsucks

He made Chow FILMS hi-fucking- larious !!!! Uncle Tat. I am excited for this but I love the Chow films of the 90's where they did 3 a year on a shoestring budget much better. God of Cookery, Tricky Brains, All for the Winner, The Lucky Guy, King of Comedy (with superhairy bush and Edison Chen pincushion Cecilia Cheung)Chow is too fucking funny to need ILM quality FX to be good.
    Bring back Tat !!!

    by burgundy82

Maybe you missed the part where I said I "love, love, love" Chow's work. I just think that by the end of the story sometimes things have gotten so crazy cartoonish that the movie stops playing by its own rules, or any whatsoever. That doesn't mean I don't dig the high-flying hell out of "Kung Fu Hustle," or "Shaolin Soccer" for that matter. You are allowed to poke fun at stuff you enjoy, by the way.

I didn't bitch at chows wackiness..

    by tourist

...I just stated that the film is for the under ten crowd. Which it is. Its not a broad appeal film like Soccer or Kung Fu Hustle. Its got absolutely nothing an adult without a mental retardation would enjoy. Unless you really like stuff in the vein of Flubber or Barney or whatever. Its a KIDS film. Not a family film.

    by cloudrider`

i criticized you earlier in other thread about not giving enough spotlight to this movie, since it's been out for a month now here in asia and still no review on the site. but now you do this. cool of you, harry.

adam sandler movies keep making money, chow's shaolin soccer & kungfu hustle doesn't. if that's not the clear testament of the idiocy of the american audience, i dont know what is. this cj7 is not chow's best, you guys missed it that first two times.

    10,000 B.C.

    by headgeek

I see it tomorrow night - thus missing my own screening of CJ7 - which isn't fair - but then - what is in life?

I'm hoping I really like 10,000B.C. - but I have to say - going into it - the word is rather dreadful. We'll have to see though. I'm not sure if I see, yet, what's so inherently retarded about it. I love pre-recorded civilization, civilization stories. Stuff like Burroughs and Howard. But who knows. I'll see tomorrow night. At this point - I'm hoping it is at a Doug McClure level.

    by teddy artery

This one looks way too cutesy, even by Chow standards. The only thing really of interest to me is the fact that it was shot in Ningbo, and I've been there a number of times. Ningbo has one of the best vegetarian restaurants I've eaten at anywhere. Elsewhere, the food is not so good.
