Tim Allen is more than a little CRAZY ON THE OUTSIDE!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Tim Allen's lead quite a unique career. He makes a shitload of god-awful mainstream non-threatening family comedies, but he's also associated with some truly great roles... with the TOY STORY series and GALAXY QUEST. I also have really fond memories of HOME IMPROVEMENT from my childhood.
It's odd that he is associated with so much crap, but also with some definite quality. I mean, he did bring a lot to both the TOY STORY films and GALAXY QUEST, he didn't just fall into them. And then he can represent so much crap! Maybe it's just me... maybe he just represents crap to most people and I'm still holding on to the few things he's done that I hold dear.
Anyway, this bit of news is about Tim Allen. He's going to direct his first feature called CRAZY ON THE OUTSIDE. What's interesting is that it's supposedly a very adult comedy and he's got a great cast lined up. Carrie-Anne Moss, Ray Liotta, Julie Bowen and Kelsey Grammer. It's about an ex-con that finds life outside of the clink is crazier than life inside.
Outside of this, he's also got voice-work in TOY STORY 3 and a role in David Mamet's REDBELT. Could be a good time in store for us that still hold out hope that Allen won't just keep pumping out Santa Clause sequels...

WHAT?!?!
FIRST?!?!?
Son of a bitch. -
Quint, you're right.
Most of Allen's work makes me...cringe, although it's good for keeping my kids entertained.
Still, it'll be interesting to see what he pulls off with this movie of his. Any idea who wrote it or where it's from?
Also, he's in a Mamet flick?
Wow.
Just...wow. -
People can talk up GALAXY QUEST and TOY STORY all they like, but I don't have any desire to see them because I don't think I can ever overcome my negative impression of Tim Allen. There are enough films that I haven't seen which feature stars that don't inherently irritate me, and I feel that I can make this small sacrifice.
-
...aside from his work on TOY STORY and GALAXY QUEST...he's crap. I don't even think that his turn in Galaxy Quest was so much that he "was SO amazing"...the role required what Tim Allen could produce. Is he talented? sure, but in a VERY narrow sense. OH..and HOME IMPROVEMENT was crap when I was 12 and is still crap. As a stand up comedian Tim Allen ain't funny...neither was a show based on "Uhh Uhh Uhh uhh"
-
MAN...I hate that shit. It's the 90's equivalent of Blue Collar Television. Stupid low class shit.
-
Damn.
-
I heard Wilson was supposed to be God, which is why Tim always asked him for advice each episode, and you never saw his face, and he knew everything about everything. Improving the home, home improvement, yadda yadda yadda. The show was too wholesome for my tastes. I thought Galaxy Quest was funny as hell, though more because of Rickman than Allen.
-
I loves me some Mamet. Even his bad ones are among the the best-crafted movies of the year.
-
He had a comedy bit about men and power tools and grunting like an ape. That god awful show "Home Improvement" was built on that single stand-up bit, and then a series of awful movies followed.
-
Even in the films that suck, he's always fun to watch. He's a man's man and criminally underrated. But no doubt, the films he does for whatever reason are usually crap. Shame.
-
And he's even a Megaman villain! http://megatoolman.ytmnd.com/ [P.S. A "man's man"?]
-
He's also supposed to be in Wild Hogs 2, because people threw dollars to go see the first piece of shit.
Zoom, Shaggy Dog, Christmas with the Cranks, Jungle 2 Jungle, and Big Trouble (not to be confused with Big Trouble in Little China) - all pieces of shit too.
With this logic, I guess Larry the Cable Guy can make great movies too if you only look at "Cars". -

So Orson Welles and Terry Gilliam have problems getting financin

but there are people willing to throw their money behind Tim Allen? Fascinating.

the original Santa Clause that bad actually. Good concept. Some genuinely funny scenes. Capable cast.
The sequels, however, were about as funny as a turd in a bag.
Santa's bag. -
I love Home improvement, it was one of my favorite shows in the 90's. Yeah, he's made a ton of shit, but maybe (with the exception of wild hogs 2) this trend will start to turn around.
-
I grew up Rosanne and the Cosbies but just couldn't watch that tool show coz it made my brain shut-off when it came on!
Not seen many of his movies but thought Galaxy Quest and everyone in it was piss and unlike Tom Hanks and Woody I think just about any bloke with the ability to do a deep Hero type voice could pull off Buzz Lightyear. -
I agree with the previous posters who like Tim Allen. My wife and I loved watching Home Improvement in the 90's (along with Seinfeld). And they've been rerunning Home Improvement lately on TBS, I believe.
His first Santa Clause movie was pretty good. We'd watch it with the kids a lot when they were young. I didn't care much for the sequels, though.
It's true - his Home Improvement show was based on his comedy routine, and it didn't vary that much, but he was able to turn that into a pretty big TV career for a while. More power to him for that. I also think he's a pretty nice guy from what I've heard and read about him. TRYING to be a good do-it-yourselfer around the house, I can relate to his comedy.
Anyway, I wish him well in his upcoming projects. -
Tim Allen and Mamet is not a connection I would have made. I think the problem with a lot of comedians who become actors is they really don't have a passion for film, they just sort of fall into it. Woody Allen is one of the few who wanted to work in film but used stand-up as a means to get there.

Does anyone remember Tim in that movie? I really like that movie, I don't know why but I've seen it a bunch and own it. Tim was really funny in it. I am surprised that there hasn't been a Galaxy Quest sequel? Was the first one a flop? I remember it being a sleeper hit. Also Tim Allen used to have a bad coke addiction if I am correct. I wish I could have seen his stand up before he got big. I would be nice to see him get away from Family crap, but when shit like Wild Hogs brings in the much money.

GQ was and is the best parody of all things Star Trek. I rate it higher than Spaceballs. Tony Shaloub and Sam Rockwell have some great lines; "That was a hell of a thing....what's with them?" and "Oh...that's just not right!". I think the problem with a GQ sequel is...where do you go from the ending of the first? Now, with the "reboot" of ST coming, perhaps they could pick up GQ where the original actors are faced with their OWN reboot, are losing their jobs, and some real galactic emergency occurs and the "old crew" saves the day. Or not. :o)

they have a few of his stand up shows on video (not sure if its on dvd yet). they were done before his tv show and while u can totally see thats where the show comes from, it isnt family friendly at all. the specials were called "men are pigs" and "tim allen rewires america" . i've only seen the pigs one myself but its great, especially if ur only exposure to him is the "family friendly" tim.
-
Really? I'm making my directorial debut as well, with an equally amazing cast. Flea, Kathleen Madigan, Bam Margera, Chevy Chase, and Spencer Breslin. FUCK yeah.
-
Oops wrong movie.
-
...Have a great cast lined up. That cast stinks. Premise sounds pretty worn too.
-
When am I going to learn to stop reading these things unless I want to read a bunch of mindless hate. Who takes a dump in you people's cheerios every morning?
"I think just about any bloke with the ability to do a deep Hero type voice could pull off Buzz Lightyear" That would be like knocking the Terminator because "Anyone with muscles could have played the part. It was a good role, and he did a good job in it. -
Sure, every episode of Home Improvement is pretty much the same, but I still enjoy them. Sure, it wasn't Seinfeld, but it's the kind of show I like to watch before I hit the hay. His first Santa Clause film wasn't bad, and his work in Galaxy Quest and the Toy Story films is great. However, he has been in some junk lately, but I'm intrigued to see what a film directed by him will be like. I'm in.

Damn, Quint. I feel old now. You're a young squirt, huh?

Come on Vern, where are ya?

What in the world was great about "Cars"? That piece of garbage was without a doubt Pixar's low point. To whoever made that statement about it being great, we are all dumber for having read your words - I award you zero points and may god have mercy on your soul.
-
To paraphrase someone on these boards re: a "bad" Pixar movie.
"Calling a Pixar movie 'bad' is like saying you had an awful orgasm."
With apologies to the actual quote and writer. I have a cold and can't be bothered to search through 10,000 posts on this cursed site.
