I was a PA on the Andy Kaufman bio pic, "Man on the Moon", and I just thought
I'd pass along some strange yet intriguing info about this film.

Take it as you will because I have no more understanding about it than anyone
else.

There were 3 different endings filmed for this movie. Why? I have no idea.

However, I can provide you with the what the 3 endings entail:

1.) The ending we all expect. Andy dies of a cancer in a hospital bed.

2.) Andy fakes his death and is shown having plastic surgery to make himself
look like his alter ego, Tony Cilfton. Many people actually believe that
Andy faked his death as part of his greatest joke ever.

3.) This one is the most bizarre. Andy Kaufman is shown giving Jim Carrey
tips on how to play Andy Kaufman for the movie. Now, I was not there when
this ending was shot but a fellow PA of mine was and said that there was no
camera trickery for this scene. Jim played himself and Andy was played by a
man who my friend could only describe as a dead ringer for Kaufman. I have
heard rumors that Andy was planning on revealing himself once this film was
released but now I'm starting to believe it.

Sorry but I have no idea how these endings will be used but I can only
speculate that they didn't film 3 endings just for the hell of it.

Harry, you are SO behind. These were announced WEEKS ago...

    by wittman

Harry, this has been announced already. I believe that Mr. Showbiz discussed these ending a few weeks back. Besides, anyone familiar with Kauffman will understand that these fit perfectly with his sense of humor. He was and still is and will always be the greatest comedic genius of the 20th century. Period.

    alternate endings

    by vinnieb

For the record, I heard about the alternate endings some weeks ago as well, and I dropped a note to the keeper of the Andy Kaufman home page (located athttp://andykaufman.jvlnet.com/ if you're interested), and he made it sound as if even these alternate endings were another gag concocted by Bob Zmuda and crew to keep people guessing about the film. In the case of all news surrounding this film, I'd take Andy's own advice..."Everything you hear about me...is not real."

    why I oughtta.. !!

    by red7ine

Hey, maybe they could make a new ending where it ends like a Scooby Doo episode! At the end of the movie, Shaggy pulls Jim Carrey's face off and it's... TONY CLIFTON?! Wait a minute... they pull Clifton's face off and it's... JERRY LAWLER?! Pull off Jerry's face to find... ANDY KAUFMAN!!

That's right... And I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you darn meddling kids!

    What I heard

    by docbosch

I heard that the one with Andy teaching Jim how to be Andy was gonna be used at the end of the credits, or posibly during the credits. I think that's the only way that would make sence.

    Klassic Kaufman

    by filmbuddy

Any and/or all 3 of these "endings" would be perfectly fitting in the biopic of this brilliantly surreal comedian. I can't wait to see what else is in store. Who knows? Maybe Milos will "pull a Lucas" and demand that all theaters showing his film must serve milk and cookies to the audience after each screening.

    A Grain of Salt

    by angus

Yeah, I'd be real careful with any info coming out of this project. Remember a few months back when Carrey "attacked" Jerry Lawler on the set, thereby recreating history? Well, MOTM's script contains a crucial moment that pretty much renders that freak-out null and void... in addition to serving as a "spoiler" for Andy Kaufman's entire career! I can't wait to see this movie. Hope my eyeballs don't jump down my throat at the sight of Courtney Love, though...

    MAN ON THE MOON

    by w. leach

MAN ON THE MOON is going to be THE movie for me in 1999. When I first heard about this project a couple of years ago, I thought it was a great idea. Far too many people only know Andy Kaufman as "that guy from TAXI," which is a shame, since Kaufman was so much more. I hope Milos Forman chooses the cancer ending. I know this is downbeat, but it will leave the audience wondering (as in real life) if Andy is really dead. Even at his FUNERAL, everyone was expecting him to jump out of his coffin. The plastic surgery and Jim Carrey endings are too ludicrously Hollywood. Who needs them? Just reading them seems artifical and phony. I say go with realism. As far as we know, Andy Kaufman died of cancer in 1984. Leave it up to the audience to decide if he's really dead or not. By the way, I think the casting of Jim Carrey is fantastic. When his name was mentioned early in casting (alongside other actors I wouldn't even CONSIDER for the role, including John Cusack, Edward Norton, Kevin Spacey, and HUH?? Nicolas Cage), I really hoped he would get the role. Luckily, Forman made the right choice, as Carrey really is the only actor I can think of who could capture Kaufman's characteristics and routines and do them justice. I can't wait for November. Go cancer ending!

    OH ANDY

    by fish

The 3 endings are no doubt to anticipate aud test screenings. After all, people won;t be going to see MOTM and leave thinking they saw Terms of Endearment -- tho this of course is the way IT SHOULD END. Hmm, clean narrative, natural character arc (life to death?) and an honest crack at reality. But somehow I get the feeling that it wouldn't wash cuz of the bummer effect. But isn't there nothing like a good cry after laughing.
