Some Designs For The New DARK KNIGHT Coaster At Six Flags!!
Merrick here...
Thought this might be a cool change of pace...
Seems there's gonna be a new roller coaster, based on THE DARK KNIGHT, at Six Flags Great America.
Here's a press release telling you all about it. BELOW THE RELEASE you'll find some designs for the ride. I don't think these have been made public yet, so you're among the first eyes to look upon them.
Enjoy!
SIX FLAGS GREAT AMERICA ANNOUNCES ‘THE DARK KNIGHT’ THEMED COASTER FOR 2008 SEASON
Gurnee, IL., Sept. 26, 2007 – Six Flags Great America announced today its new attraction for 2008: “The Dark Knight Coaster,” an indoor dark coaster based on Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming movie The Dark Knight featuring DC Comics’ characters Batman and The Joker. The Dark Knight Coaster will cost $7.5 million and opens May 2008.
“Today’s announcement represents Six Flags Great America’s continued focus on delivering a well-rounded and balanced entertainment package,” said Hank Salemi, Six Flags Great America’s Park President. “The Dark Knight Coaster offers a unique experience that will appeal to families and teens alike.”
The Dark Knight Coaster will transform guests into citizens of Gotham City - caught in the middle of a city under siege and torn apart by The Joker.
With The Dark Knight Coaster, guests will experience the ride of their lives. Venturing through demented hallways of twists, turns and hallucinatory images, they are tormented by The Joker himself. Then as they set foot onto a distressed, vandalized train platform, they can only guess at what awaits them as they speed through six 180-degree hairpin turns, climb unseen hills, plunge into pitch darkness and dip into unforeseen danger. As they attempt to escape the terror, their only hope is that Gotham’s Silent Guardian - Batman - can save them.
“The opening of The Dark Knight Coaster will be perfectly-timed to coincide with the debut of the next Batman film from director Christopher Nolan. We’re very excited that fans will be able to have a first-hand experience with the sites, sounds and thrills of crime fighting in Gotham City,” said Brad Globe, President, Warner Bros. Worldwide Consumer Products.
The Dark Knight Coaster will use storytelling, physical movement, video, sound and special effects to bring guests a one-of-a-kind dark ride experience. The coaster will be located in the Orleans Place section of Six Flags Great America.

The Dark Knight releases in theaters July 18, 2008.

-

Does look like a good coaster, though. -

Looks like the issues everyone had with the end of the super bowl spot have been fixed or at least being worked on. -
3 hour wait, 90 second ride, and all the funnel cakes you can eat (for $5.50 each, that is)
-
not at all
-
I happen to live in chicago so.....interesting.
-
Maybe 2 papers were featured, but wasn't the Gotham Globe the newspaper that was used in the comics?
-
youre all such cool people. posting on a movie site talkback and saying "who cares?" to the news! I think the moment to demonstrate "cool impartiality" passed the moment you typed aintitcool.com in the address bar.
-
so we really dont have a clue what the coaster itself will be like. this is just background artwork and set design. The coaster shown is just to show track level and scale, I'm sure you do more than drive by buildings LOL
-
News about drink coasters? What's next, keychains?Oh, wait. Not that kind of coaster. My bad. Nevermind.
-
Go check out the new trailer at Cominsoon.net,it fuckin rocks

Disney and Universal Studios have FASTPASS, Great America has...
by shiftyeyeddog2
They really need to get their act together and develop a similar system so people dont spend 12 hours at the park and get to go on 4 rides. Last I heard, all they had was a thing where you could BUY like 3 fastpasses for $20. Learn from Disney and Universal. They know how to do it right.
-
That should say Great America has.... LONG WAITS

ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.

The "Adrenochrome" coaster.

Or is this just a re-dressing of that very same coaster with tin housing on all sides making it "dark?"

Dark Knight is over by where the late, great Shockwave once stood.
-
god damn it I didn't know Batman was gonna be standing on top of the newspaper building.
-
This coaster will also be at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ and Six Flags New England in Agawam, Mass. So it's not just Chicago!
-
wow that looks like a really crazy coaster.

I'm from Chicago and used to love going to Great America
by moondoggy2u
Sorry to hear that shockwave is gone? Why did it leave? It seemed like a pretty snazzy coaster. Is Iron Wolf still there?
-
and Universal. There's also theming, dark rides, family attractions, landscape design, character use, advertising, maintenance, upkeep, cleanliness, queue design, food service, use of music, ride layout/design, employment screening, and oh, everything.
-
On many rollercoaster websites.
-
the coaster slowly climbs a 1000ft incline and dives straight down a track with a series of explosions detonating on either side of you... blowing out your eardrums. you can no longer hear people screaming but can see what looks like a white pool at the bottom. you then fly through a vat of cocaine and come out the otherside bug eyed and twitching... then travel through a series of corkscrewed tunnels of blue/green lights, live machine gun fire and more explosions. At the end there is a statue of will smith saying "aw hell nah!" but you can't hear it because your ears are still bleeding. i'd ride it at least once.
-
At Universal's Islands of Adventure - it's called Spiderman and another one called The Mummy. Both kick ass. By the time you drive to Orlando, ride those two rides, and drive back, your wait time for this Six Flags ride may be under one hour.
-
I thought comic book stuff was for kids.
-
Strap yourself in for a hair raising aerial adventure through the NYC skyline!
-
Ride along with narrator John Landis as your helicopter veers wildly out of control!
-
Watch this awesome stunt show as a Brandon Lee look alike attempts all sorts of dangerous moves!
-
Not listed on the plans?!? Damn them to hell! Now, I just have to look forward to the new Cowboys stadium with its "Jerry Jones Toupee Stunt Show" and "The Tony Romo Chick Boinking Spectacular"
-
Where's the scoop on those!
-
Huh?
-
Burger king cups!!? what about glasses? I still have mine from Batman Forever... well two of them anyway. Oh yea can't wait for the new ride, but I hope they keep the old one and take out that corny Batman and Robin ride.
-
No snotty comments about how you never thought that Six Flags was all that much fun, but if it's our thing then you guess you have to write about it? Good for you!
-
shock wave with something. aw, hell. its been years since i've been there. they still got that space shuttle that does loop-d-loops? that was awsome. till i barfed.
-
It sucks that the Shock Wave is gone. It was always the first ride we could see on our drive to the park and the first ride I got on once we were inside. I wouldn't be surprised if it caused its share of concussions throughout the years.
-
after the Superman ride of horror in Louisville?
-
The Batman Forever glasses were from McDonalds and they were sweet. I hope the king can step up, there stuff is usually crappy
-
People with heart conditions cannot ride.
-
That thing kicks ass.
-
write those press releases. There must a a special class in marketing school where they carefully remove part of your brain and replace it with pure bull shit.
-
I hope your kidding. Can we call for a preemptive ban on all phoney "too soon" talk relating to the Joker. I hope WB is not afraid to use the iconic images of the Joker this summer and beyond due to the fact one of the many actors who played the character has passed. Ledger was one guy he died, the show must go on. Are you really offended? If the passsing of one smack head ruins the fun vibe of a awesome new Batman movie than the terrorists win. When the actor playing Ronald McDonald died they got a new guy and nobody noticed, then we all continued to have fun eating cheeseburgers.
-
why are the two new iron man trailers not posted on the site?? They are so so so so awesome, GO WATCH THEM
-
I can't believe I referenced McDonald's 2 posts in a row. I apologize and it was completely unintentional. I must be hungry.
-
dedicated to Harry Potter that is under construction at Universal's Islands Of Adventure got nothing? And last I heard on The Dark Knight, construction had been indefinitely halted due to improper building commision permits- maybe that's changed.
-
was an awesome ride. It came out at the same time as Batman Returns. It had the Batcave and Penquin's lair and a stand up roller coaster.
-
Coming to your local carnival

I RIDE IT DOWN!
I'VE ABANDONED MY BOY ON THE COASTER! -
the whedonites would spend their entire lives on it and refuse to get off when the ride is over and over and over and over.

...you know where to find me. (heh, heh) (Wife smacks me upside the head.)
-
Uh yeah. What about the Bat Cave?
-
The Joker's appearance in THE MOVIE is going to feel morbid and exploitive. I'd really hate to be in the Marketing Dept @ Warners. Here you've got a guy who died of a drug overdose playing an already creepy as fuck character that's not only the living representation of grinning creeping death but also KILLS PEOPLE WITH DRUGS. Man, that's not going to look good on a Happy Meal no matter how you try to spin it. That's the con. Now of course the pro is that Ledger's death will make his Joker performance about a billion times creepier and ultimately set The Dark Knight up as a cult film no matter how it sits with the general public. Still a sad shame.
-
Sure as hell looks like it.
-
Yeah!
-
to work on his blog.
-
and I assure you I have valid reasons for doing so, I am interested to see how this ride turns out. It's a step in the right direction. I just hope they follow through with it and devote the type of upkeep that ride effects and theming requires. Someone mentioned Batman the Escape at Astroworld, so I wiki'd it. Sure enough, it once had a themed queue set up like the batcave. What happened? They bulldozed it and painted the damn coaster more "extreme" colors. From what I gather, Six Flags has finally admitted they need to draw families and not just thrill-seeking teens who don't spend money at the park, and are adjusting their management accordingly. They're finally trying to clean up Magic Mountain, have sold off the stupid purchases they made in the late 90's, and, if the Dark Knight ride is any indication, are finally trying to make rides that are worth the 2+ hour wait in the searing sun.
-
a Newsies tie-in with this?
Is it all just "part of the plaaaaaaan"? -
standing on the ride? No common sense. Are they crash test dummies?
-
DO NOT ride the American Eagle- when one piece of wood would rot around the bolts holding it in place, they'ed simply bore a new hole....IN THE SAME GODDAMN PIECE OF ROTTING WOOD!! This is absolutely true.
-
1) Batman the ride is in Yankee Harbor, whereas I guess this is in Orleans Place. 2)Iron Wolf is very much still there. Oh and btw Shockwave was torn down for Superman, so I have no idea where this new ride is- something else had to have come down to make room.
-
I actually wasted time typing all of that useless knowledge.
-
Believe it or not, I still have a few photos of me riding that thing in the late eighies. At least, I think it was late eighties. It could have been around 90 or 91, but you get the idea.
-
In Gurnee, the Prince music playing throughout the line. Does this mean they will close that down for the new ride? An end to 90's Batman?
-
Because that's what it's been like in this country for about eight years now.
-
All those sheets are is concepts for set pieces and deco you'll like wizz pasty at 40 miles an hour. That kind of concept work is what I do for a living. It's basisicallty a style guide for the draftsmen that will do the plans and proof of concept for the client. Jeezus fuck, relax!
-
Wow, a lesson that I should not type fast when angry. Horrible syntax and keystroke errors abound. Yikes.
-
He likes the Family Circus comic.
-
It would be cool if I could work there, but I don't think that a seasonal job would be for me. (Even though if I could play Hawkgirl, that would be great.) Anyway, why not? They filmed most of the movie in Chicago, anyway. BTW, for "Fright Fest", they call Viper "Snakes on a Train." :D

-
Check out the CNN story. If you run the link that I posted above, be sure to close the gaps. What a cool story. "The training is nothing! The will is everything! ...The will to act."
-
comic books by Frank Miller I remember how I kept thinking "Wow, this would make a really good amusement park ride."
-
In the little "About DC Comics" thing at the bottom of the release, it names the iconic characters Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and...Sandman? I love The Sandman so much it ended my last relationship, but is ol' Morpheus really an icon of DC?
-
Watch out for those pyrotechnics!
-
..so it was the Gotham City Police Dept. blowing up in the trailer.. right?
-
taken me 6 years, but i'm here now
-
That ride blows.
-
Who needs this?
-
You think the Rockin' Roller Coaster blows? But you like the Prequel Trilogy? jimmay, your post is 100% correct. Disney's theme parks are world class.
-
slow news day?
-
Don't really like roller coasters.
-
still kicks this turd's ass.
-
And I was PISSED when Back to the Future closed. That ride ruled.

Some really nice looking municipal building designs there.
by bubba gillman
And Disney's Haunted Mansion ride is the best ride ever!
-
Yeah right!
This ride sounds a lot like it. -
Or at least it was when I was 8.
"Let's hit the Grizzly before it gets busy yo!!" -
Phone Book.
-
Does it open in May or will it open "to perfectly coincide with the new movie," which would, obviously, be in July? I'm confused.
-
“Today’s announcement represents Six Flags Great America’s continued focus on delivering a well-rounded and balanced entertainment package.” Really? Because this ride looks stupid as shit. And I could have sworn that this Six Flags park already had one waste-of-time Batman ride so I’m not sure I understand how adding another one is somehow adding to the “well-rounded” and “balanced” aspect. Also, what category does this coaster belong in? Is it a sit-down coaster, a stand-up coaster, or a one-guy-stands-and-the-other-guy-takes-a-shit-in-the-rear coaster?
-
Then I, like so many that have posted before me, could say with absolute certainty that this ride is going to suck. I love judging things when there is absolutely no basis for my opinion, it gives me a higher opinion of myself.
