STEP-BROTHERS Gets A Trailer And Has A Test Screening!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here. I’m guessing everyone involved in this one is feeling pretty good about it right now. The trailer just premiered at Yahoo! Movies, and I think it looks like it could be twisted fun. I like Ferrell trying to bury Reilly. I like the bunkbeds stuff. I like the energy of the trailer. And I’m hoping I hear from more of you who were at the test screening this week. For now, here’s one spy’s take on what he saw:

So my girlfriend and I went to a screening of the new Will Farell, John C. Reilly, Judd Apatow produced "Step Brothers" that opens nation wide on July 25th at the Archlight in Sherman Oaks, CA. After we were seated we were told by someone involved with the production that we were the first audience to see the film. The premise was simple, John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell both play 40 year old men that still live with their single parents. Both are unemployed, Ferrell having been recently fired from his job at Petsmart and living with mom Mary Steenburgen, and Reilly spending his days playing Guitar Hero and playing drums in his "Beat Laboratory" (Really just a room in his dads house with egg crate foam duck taped to the wall). Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins (Reilly's Doctor dad) end up getting married and move in together. The new step brothers are then forced to share a room together and in the process end up going at each others throats before eventually turning from enemies into allies. I will say this was probably the best Will Ferrell film I've seen to date. Much better than most of his "sports" themed films (including Semi-Pro, which I also caught early). Ferrell is at his best easily playing off the AMAZING John C. Reilly. You get the feeling halfway in that we may just be seeing the budding of one of the great comedy duo's of all time. I’m talking Matthau and Lemmon good. The movie plays and feels like an Apatow film. Not nearly as cheesy as Talledega, Blades of Glory, or Semi-Pro. This is a situation that could definitlely happen in real life and the film plays that way. There is plenty of vulgar dialouge, including your typical fart, dick, and vomit gags, as well as even a scrotum appearance, which earned massive laughs. I'd put the F bomb count and somewhere in the 150-200 range, so this is definitely looking at a hard R. (YES!!!) The version we saw was a bit long in the tooth, coming in at 2 hours plus, and I suspect some big cuts will get done before the flim goes wide in the summer. Overall the audience love it and was laughing nonstop. I expect this to be a HUGE hit when it hits theaters. Oh, and after the movie we walked out directly behind Will Ferrell himself, (clad in dark green shorts, blue zip up hoody, hat, and bright florescent adidas gym shoes) who seemed extremely upbeat and thoroughly pleased with the reaction.
