Would You Believe -- The New GET SMART Trailer Suggests A Movie That's Actually Pretty Cool!?!?
Merrick here...
We've received many mixed signals about this film.
At one point, the script sucked really, really badly & the whole thing smelled like a disaster. But, most folks who wrote to us after attending early test screenings have indicated the movie doesn't suck at all.
I'm told the action in the film is surprisingly high-caliber & well executed...we catch the briefest glimpses of this here. And, I'm told the tone of the film is a surprising balance between modern action-comedy edge and affectionate homage/satire.
Really interested in seeing how this comes together.

I think I might actually go to the theater if this keeps shaping us as it does. Originally the only thing that amused me was the casting.
-
would you believe, five angry boy scouts, two pigs and a canary?
-
Funny stuff. This movie may be huge.
-
actually can't view this at work. I wonder if they will retain any of the catchphrases.
-
can't wait for this
-
..more catchphrases.
-
Would you believe that this island is surrounded by the entire 6th Fleet? Would you believe the 7th Fleet? How about two cops in a rowboat?
-
Color me there!
-
That looks like a hilarious movie. . .I'm looking forward to seeing it! Great trailer. Alan Arkin is the fricking MASTER, and Steve Carrell is a treasure. I hope the script matches with the sight gags and stunts.
-
I'm stoked by this trailer. Looks like they nailed the cast. I'm real glad they didn't choose to do a Don Addams impression-type movie but still managed to keep the feel of the series in tact. At least the trailer succeeds in that manner, we'll see about the movie... Here's hoping.
-
Forgot to add: I will watch anything that Terrence Stamp is in. I wish I could see him in more movies, and the day he has a lead is the day I will go nuts. The man is great!
-
Although he is approaching casting overkill ( Steve, keep it to one movie a year at most ), imagine this if they had gone with Ben Stiller...nnnoooooooooo!!!
-
I'll check it out
-
You must check out, if you haven't, Steven Soderbergh's The Limey. Stamp gives a brilliant performance.
-
Just go look up the director and writers' other work on IMDB and have a laugh at all the total crap they've foisted on the world.
-
First trailer sucked, but this one has convinced me to check it out.
Not opening weekend, but definitely in the theaters. -
Looks like some good laughs there. Probably could have done w/out the "missed it by that much" one-liner.
-
Steve Carrell is one of the funniest people on the planet so here's hoping this is going to good.
-
or is anne hathaway so un-fucking-believably hot. Like I would do everything to her... EVERYTHING!! I mean I would eat that for days! (Oh and the movie looks good too. Get Smart, can't wait.)
-
. . . but as a kid of the 80s, if I wish I was getting Inspector Gadget, done right, instead of Get Smart. Hey, it's still a spy comedy involving Don Adams . . .
-
I'm in.
-
in anything but a Die Hard trailer. Fools.
-
but how much confidence can we put in trailers and early reviews these days? It's STILL a Peter Segal movie, so wait and see. At the very least this trailer shows that the movie has some visual qualities, unlike many spy spoofs around here.
-
Suprised that they're allowed to say "crap" though. Wouldn't want to offend the "family groups".
-
is the "breast" part of that trailer. Furthermore, it looks like this is the movie Johnny English tried to be but couldn't (although, admittedly, I still liked it). Provided all the best gags aren't in the trailer, I think I will be pleased.
-
but then if you follow the ZAZ template, you'd have to be a monkey to do it wrong.
-
...is now known as the "Beethoven Die Hard trailer music."
-
Sorry, someone had to say it.
-
Just a little. Color that hair a nice dark red color. Then pop out a kid. And there you have the next generation of UBER-MILFs. Its the circle of life, my friends.

-
I'm actually looking forward to this. Looks like it'll be a fun movie. Anne Hathaway is effin' beautiful. Of course, that's stating the obvious...
-
That girls eye balls are freaking crazy. Kinda like that girl you always knew growing up that wore glasses and one day BAM! She gets eye care ensurance and gets contacts. You still know she needs glasses. Cause those peepers are buggin out and ready to see anything. I bet Anne can count the ammount of strings in her dental floss for that giant ass smile. Other than her boobs. She gots to go. Over-rated. She creeps me out....clothed
-
... still has to be exciting and it looks like Get Smart is headed in the right direction. For instance, I felt that was the problem with the Starsky and Hutch movie - I was fine with it being a comedy but the action was so lame that it was just not fun. It's been said a million times before but Steve Carell is perfect casting... anyone remember Andy Dick in the Get Smart, the next generation, series? That was incredibly awful!
-
Did anyone notice Hiros in it? Thats good news.
-
This actually looks really good. I was going to see it anyway but this gets me excited.
-
Will it be good? Probably worlds better than the new Pink Panther. I always thought that Stevie would make a great Maxwell, and its nice to see Anne not succumbing to the slutifying of other Hollywood starlets. Good stuff, and I'm there.
Chilla!

Looks awesome. I hope Terrence Stamp hams it a little more though.
-
Fuck they look scrumptious! Meow!
-
If you know what I mean ...
-
kicks infinite ass. after southland tales, he pretty much convinved me he doesnt mind looking retarded as hell as long as its funny and this does look funny...
-
Liked Mel Brooks' stuff as a kid but never got into GET SMART reruns... even as a child I thought it was a clever idea that was never quite outrageous enough (despite the shoe phone which will be a very funny gag if it ends up in the 2008 film). That said, this actually looks OK... will have to wait and see, but I tip my hat to the great cast!
-
I am all for it.
-
Got nothing more.
-
I still have not forgiven Steve C. for Evan Almighty. It was like being hooked to faulty suicide machine. Please let me die already.
-
Only Dwayne seemed to be playing it the right way. There was a lot of mugging and flailing about. Looks like they made Max geeky. AICN has been shilling pretty hard for this movie. I got a bad feeling about this...
-
What's 99 wearing under the trenchcoat?
-
Carrell's playing him fairly similar to how Don Adams did. He would mess up and things would just work out in his favor, but he also did know some moves and have some skills.
-
Mick Foley.
-
this one was not. not great, but not awful.
-
Guaranteed.
-
In ten years or so when the TV shows I grew up with from the late eighties start getting old enough to get remade as parodies/unnecessarily expensive action movies. Will Ferrell and John C. Reily in "Perfect Strangers"? Three Dane Cook-level douchebags in "Full House"? Jason Lee as Mr. Belding in "Saved by the Bell"? An all CGI ALF? I can't wait! I love you Hollywood recycling machine!
-
Punk Brewster grew up to be hot. I'm just saying.
-
and Anne Hathaway still looks hot
-
I'm really surprised at how much I now look forward to this movie. My one fear is the Peter Segal factor. He's always been hit or miss. Good luck to all involved! Looks great.
-
it may be a funny movie, but it has very little to do with the original series
-
No no, Novaman5000. Carrell is playing it the opposite of Adams. Agent 86 thought he was cool. He was over confident and wouldn't react to his own bumbling. Carrell is acting more like Ace Ventura, since this thing was originally developed for Jim Carrey a long time ago. When Adams did a fight scene, he actually handled himself well.
-
Freakin funny! This will be awesome!
-
I thought they disappeared last year. Anyway, I wanna see this movie.. a bit more
-
That was hilarious.

Wow, clever, a GET SMART headline with "Would You Believe"
by derlanghaarige
-
Dood. It's Beethoven's Ninth symphony, The Ode to Joy...NOT THE FUCKING DIE HARD MUSIC!!!! It can be used anywhere they want, because - you know, CLASSIC...
-
You can tell just by watching the trailer. You can also tell that this is going to be a suckfest.
-
...and -- would you believe -- the trailer they showed then was even funnier!! Painfully hilarious. And I'm actually pleased to see that they left out the funniest moment, because it's a good sign that they've got tons of good material and aren't blowing it all in the advertising. I'd started to feel the weight of Steve Carell overexposure, but this puts him right back on the map for me. Can't wait!
-
but we all know how a good trailer does not equal "good movie". But it does appear to equal "good Hathaway."
-
That looks like absolute shit. Are people seriously digging that trailer?
-
I dunno man, I liked the first trailer and this one looked stale and painfully unfunny to me, with a incongruous pop song in the middle that made me think a clock radio had gone off in my apartment
-
Carell looks like he's playing Tommy Boy and Segal wouldn't know subtlety if it bit him in the ass. A lot of stupid mugging and juvenile jokes. Is this a comedy or a Saturday morning kid show? Oh wait, it's Peter Segal directing so that answers that question. Carell's geeky Max is as pathetic as the posters whose only criteria for a movie is how hot Anne Hathaway is.
-
I actually turned to my friend and asked, "Does this mean the movie could actually be funny?" Then I licked his face. Wait...not that part.
-
Will Ferrell & John C. Reilly in Perfect Strangers is a much better idea than you'd like to give yourself credit for.
-
In the crap that was "Get Shorty" I thought Dwayne Johnson was actually one of it's saving graces. He's actually really funny. And Alan Arkin is one of the funniest actors of all time, imo. So I didn't expect a bad movie. And having never watched the old show I was surprised that I was actually interested.
-
...Only flaws I can see, aside from Hathaway being an ugly dog, is that the comedy element of this action comedy looks like the least amusing, lowest common denominator tired old slapstick shit we've seen a million times before. This looks almost as awesome as the tuxedo, except Jennifer Love Hewitt had better tits.

CherryValance it's actually Be Cool the shitfest sequel to
by studioplant69
Get Shorty. Also Be Cool was not one of Elmore Leonard's best books.
eol -
They watch Nick at Nite and insert whatever actor is on TMZ at the moment.
Oh and Jason Lee will play the dad on the Full House movie. Uncle Jessie will be played by David Hasselhoff.
This I command. -
Anne Hathaway makes me want to go to the bathroom. Phew, wot a scorcher..!
-
"THATS THE WORST TRAILER/SCRIPT/MOVIE/PERFORMANCE I HAVE EVER SEEN" about things that obviously are not are idiots and it is the first sign of trolling. if that trialer is the worst trailer is the worst or second worst trailer you have ever seen I can only assume you have only seen 2 or 3 trailers in your life because it just isn't that bad. you may genuinely think the film looks bad or that the trailer is terrible but there is absolutely zero merit in the words of people who use hyperbole like that all the time. its pointless and you just look like a knob.
-
Personally I think he is the best, funniest comic actor in decades. He's not a comic trying to act. Carrell can actually act. He is also perfectly suited to this. Not knowing the script, he and Hathaway look like they work real well and I think this is a hit!
-
If I had to think of a comic actor of Arkin's caliber I would have to put Carrell as the next gen answer to Arkin. Having these two together is awesome!
-
You hit the nail on the head. Carrell is an actor who plays comedic characters, not a comedian who tries to act. There is a big difference. The comedy on The Office is completely character driven. Michael and Dwight may be idiots, but they are very specific idiots. Carrell is an alum of Second City.
-
Meet The Spartans or Snakes on a Plane. But that ain't saying much. :^/

Great trailer, and Anne H has to get into porn immediately
by zeke25:17
Also, I love the "element of sur-PRAAAHHHH" line, which I think was the only good thing in the first teaser!
-
The movie version of Punky Brewster and Webster.
-
Having enjoyed the repeats of Get Smart as a kid I have to say I'm pretty happy with what I saw just there. I think I may actually enjoy this one. And as for Anne Hathaway, she is one fine woman. I had no idea. I've just done a Google image search with the filter off and my morning has just gotten off to a pretty good start.
-
There's 'Action Violence'. Fuck. Never mind. I was hoping for some 'Lethargic Violence' or 'Suggested Violent Themes'. The MPAA Are DOUCHES.
-
Runnin' from their Hobbit troubles, is what it sounds like to me. Fucking shiftless fucks. I hope Freddy Kruger molests their kids..
-
The point of the old one (remember the cheap plastic pipe with a bubble on either end?), was that it looked cheap and like it was never gonna work. Why redo that?
Why give Max a bullshit backstory about him being some fat kid wh always wanted to become an agent.
Nah, I loved Get Smart and I like Carrell but the more I see of this the less I actually want to see it. The youngsters have got hold of the concept now, and they don't want to share the ball with Mel Brooks or Buck Henry. This Get Smart looks just it's getting stupider.
