Would You Believe -- The New GET SMART Trailer Suggests A Movie That's Actually Pretty Cool!?!?

Published at:  Feb 28, 2008 8:28:02 AM CST

Merrick here...

We've received many mixed signals about this film.

At one point, the script sucked really, really badly & the whole thing smelled like a disaster. But, most folks who wrote to us after attending early test screenings have indicated the movie doesn't suck at all.

I'm told the action in the film is surprisingly high-caliber & well executed...we catch the briefest glimpses of this here. And, I'm told the tone of the film is a surprising balance between modern action-comedy edge and affectionate homage/satire.

Really interested in seeing how this comes together.

    the action in action-comedy...

    by dex

... still has to be exciting and it looks like Get Smart is headed in the right direction. For instance, I felt that was the problem with the Starsky and Hutch movie - I was fine with it being a comedy but the action was so lame that it was just not fun. It's been said a million times before but Steve Carell is perfect casting... anyone remember Andy Dick in the Get Smart, the next generation, series? That was incredibly awful!

No no, Novaman5000. Carrell is playing it the opposite of Adams. Agent 86 thought he was cool. He was over confident and wouldn't react to his own bumbling. Carrell is acting more like Ace Ventura, since this thing was originally developed for Jim Carrey a long time ago. When Adams did a fight scene, he actually handled himself well.

Personally I think he is the best, funniest comic actor in decades. He's not a comic trying to act. Carrell can actually act. He is also perfectly suited to this. Not knowing the script, he and Hathaway look like they work real well and I think this is a hit!

You hit the nail on the head. Carrell is an actor who plays comedic characters, not a comedian who tries to act. There is a big difference. The comedy on The Office is completely character driven. Michael and Dwight may be idiots, but they are very specific idiots. Carrell is an alum of Second City.

The point of the old one (remember the cheap plastic pipe with a bubble on either end?), was that it looked cheap and like it was never gonna work. Why redo that?
Why give Max a bullshit backstory about him being some fat kid wh always wanted to become an agent.
Nah, I loved Get Smart and I like Carrell but the more I see of this the less I actually want to see it. The youngsters have got hold of the concept now, and they don't want to share the ball with Mel Brooks or Buck Henry. This Get Smart looks just it's getting stupider.
