THE FOOT FIST WAY Website Goes Online! And Fred Simmons Dropped By CONAN Last Night?

Published at:  Feb 27, 2008 6:10:59 PM CST

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

Fred Simmons is the King of the Demo, and now America finally has had a taste of just what that means.

I included THE FOOT FIST WAY on my Best of 2007 list, but for most of you, it’s going to be a 2008 release. I’m so happy to see the publicity machine on this one start to kick into gear. I love the notion of having “Fred Simmons” make appearances on talk shows. We’re going to have plenty of time to get to know Danny McBride in the next few years... right now, selling the character is more important. It’s not unlike the way Pixar keeps selling the character of WALL·E more than any one particular plot element of the film itself.

There’s a lot of really subtle stuff in what McBride does during the CONAN appearance, and the same is true of the movie. I love that he brought Julio with him for the TV appearance, and the eagle-eyed among you will spot writer/director Jody Hill onstage as well.

April 11th is when Paramount Vantage begins to roll this one out, and when they do, I am personally asking you to give it a shot. I don’t often get as evangelical about a film as I am about this one, but I think this is a great, special film, and if you want to understand the inevitable hype over McBride in the next few years, this is Ground Zero.

Thanks to everyone who sent us heads up on the website and on the CONAN appearance as well.

Did you know they put up the official site for THE FOOT FIST WAY?

It rules - even got a soundboard. Which is actually not rules because now this thing we all love is gonna be big and everyone gonna like it. Which i have a feeling won't happen, actually -- he's too fucking weird for most. But my God do I love him.

Fred Simmons was also on Conan last night and was very, very, very funny. The clip is floating around youtube but nbc keeps putting the kibosh on it. The entire Conan show should pop up on the NBC website sometime today so you can see it there.

    Pineapple Express

    by mr. gunderson

McBride is definitely the highlight of the upcoming Pineapple Express. Which, by the way, I don't know how got such huge buzz. It's a solid, funny movie but the action just didn't work for me. McBride and Franco are unbelievable though.

I was thinking of you Mori when I saw this last night.

    by kid idioteque

I kept asking myself, "This is what he's been going apeshit for?" I knew immediately what what happening when Danny McBride walked out, but the audience clearly didn't. I don't think many realized that he wasn't a real karate instructor, even by the end. Granted, I chuckled a few times but that was it. Perhaps they should have made it more clear by the end, but Conan continued to play along. And I saw McBride in Hot Rod. He was just as terrible as the rest of the film. I hope I eat my words when this comes out, but I just don't understand the hype.

O.K. to hype this one, guys...

    by skinjob69

Saw this at the Sundance (was that 3 years ago?- man, time flies), and I laughed my ass off all the way through it. In some ways it seems like a spin off of the Napoleon Dynamite- the karate dojo scene near the beginning of the film. The lead actor does a great job playing the incompetent, over-confident instructor with the big ego. I'm hoping they've tightened it up a bit (kind of meandered a bit towards the end. Even in the form I saw it, though, I think it would be successful. Funny as hell.
And besides, don't we need some new comedy talent about now (Apatow and Ferrell are getting a bit stale, IMO).

    by beldo84

I thought this was great when I saw it last night, but I knew what was going on. I remember reading about the making of this movie a couple of years ago on a David Gordon Green website, and I'm happy it's getting a release.

Apatow has his fingers in this too

    by beldo84

And I believe Ferrell does as well, hence McBride's appearance after Ferrell. Ferrell is also producing a show for HBO with McBride made by the same guys who made "Foot Fist Way." Fun fact: The writer and director of "Foot Fist Way" are the guys in "Superbad" who tell Jonah Hill he's got period blood on his leg.

But at least he wasn't a writer on this one. All 3 of them seem pretty cool, BTW.

  • ...and JAVIER BARDEM is the only man alive who can play Conan on film! The character could totally give a rel actor plenty of interesting shit to do, if he's written properly as he appears in the Howard stories. See The Whole Wide World if you don't believe me! That's my story and I'll only change it if you confuse me a whole bunch!

...and dig Conan's style of awkward humor, but goddamn, this was painfully unfunny. I "get it", but wow. I'd rather watch Kevin Smith run the F'in Matt D. joke into the ground 20 more times (and *that* was weak).

    Doin' the Borat...

    by tourist

...Sell the fictional character. Which is good, if you have enough material to go around. This was kind of flat, but late show formats, what with their painfully unfunny and dead eyed mannequin hosts, aren't the best format to do funny on. Still looking forward to it, because I like that whole North Carolina/David Gordon Green thing. Which is why I'm looking forward to Pineapple Express and not the other Apatow Marshall flick thats coming. Plus he was funny in Hot Rod, which was the hardest working, but least funny comedy I've seen in yonks.

    Foot Fist Way is great...

    by bobmapplethorpe

I got a DVD screener a while back and I have to say that McBride's character is an absolute classic. The actress that plays his wife really sucks, but some of their scenes together are dynamite.

This movie has one of the best comedy scenes of the year when McBride and one of his students are staking out his wife... great lines.

And by the way, Apatow had nothing to do with the production of this movie, but after watching FFW, Apatow and Ferrell both saw that this guy is gonna be huge in comedy.

fwiw McBride's got some old vids on his youtube profile oldboymcbride. He's just a normal guy that's finally getting a break, so don't hate.

Simmons' Conan bit was completely unfunny rubbish

    by tallboy66

And I even laughed more at Farell's bit, and Farell was FUCKING TERRIBLE! Seriously, this shit will bomb and a bunch of upity douchebags will have something they can say was funny but everyone else "was too dumb to get it". So then you can feel smart. There you go. Enjoy it and the move onto the next flavour of the month after this goes.

So i checked out the site because everyone was saying that they could not get in. At first it wouldn't let me, and I thought it was just a joke. But then I realized that I had moved, put in my old ZIP and got in. Does anyone else find it creepy that a retarded MOVIE site can gain that sort of personal information about you? That is of course that there are certain ristrictions to getting in. It wouldn't bother me so much if say it was like a .gov site or something, but a movie site? Underage kids you better look out it may start to get a lot harder to get into over 18 sites then Click here if you are over 18.

    by tenebre

...Andy Kaufman. This is exactly the type of comedy he did. You know, be a total ass when 95 percent of the audience didn't have a clue. Only, this guy isn't as good. I'll probably see it anyway, but I know I'll be imagining Andy doing the gags.

    Yea good call Tenebre

    by dablunt89

He definitely takes from Kaufman in that he pretends to act like a complete asshole. Honestly when I saw it on conan a few days back I loved it. But I don't think this style translates to youtube when you go to watch it fully knowing you are being duped. It's different with the characters by Sasha Baron Cohen because his characters are so cartoonish and over the top. The reason I liked it is because you could really imagine there is some douche bag tae kwon do instructor out there who thinks hes better then he is.
