AICN EXCLUSIVE! Moriarty Has Some More News About GHOULISHLY YOURS, WILLIAM M. GAINES!

Published at:  Feb 27, 2008 6:09:36 PM CST

Hey, everyone. “Moriarty” here.

Got this in and had to share. I really hope that this movie turns out to be something special. It’s about time someone steps up to help cement the reputation of William Gaines in pop culture, and I love the choice of John Landis as director.

Now it sounds like they’ve made a choice that should lend the film some verisimilitude. Check it out:

“Hey Drew,

Here's a scoop (I have to stay true to my fave site and give you the info first; I have yet to send this anywhere else):

There could be only one Creative Consultant for this film, if the history (of EC Comics) I'll be attempting to showcase were to have any real significance. I'm doing this for the fans, for the history and for my own passion for the material.

The man who has agreed to come aboard as Creative Consultant of "Ghoulishly Yours, William M. Gaines" is ... the legendary Al Feldstein.

More later.

Best,
Joel Eisenberg”

Joel’s the writer/producer on this one, and he’s got a huge job ahead of him, honoring these men and the amazing creative explosion that was EC Comics in its heyday. Fingers crossed he pulls it off. If he does, this could be one to keep your eyes peeled for.

    This is exciting.

I could even see this doing Oscar business if Landis plays his cards right. Especially if they really go into when Tales got in trouble with Congress for being the one true cause of juvenile delinquency. (...) Is this for 2008 or 2009? No need to rush. Hope they take their time with this one.

    GOOD LORD! CHOKE!

Heh heh heh. Can't wait to see this. That one guy from Mad Men looks a bit like a young Bill Gaines. You know, the tall, chunky one that went out with the sexy secretary character... For that matter, throw John Landis in a fat suit and he could pass for 70s Gaines.

...TV Movie right? It doesn't have to be a bad one though, American Splendour turned out alright. But this sounds bad all over.

Not with Al Feldstein on board!
As Gaines's right-hand man and magazine editor after Harvey Kurtzman left MAD, there's nobody else better to oversee Landis's biopic. From the EC days to guiding the magazine through its glory days, Feldstein can make sure that the facts and period details ring true--- nothing like
being there as one of MAD's "Usual Gang of Idiots" when it all happened; am pretty sure that Landis (a big Comics fan) will listen to his insights.

Now for Landis to also sign up Frank Jacobs--- esp. since they ARE using his THE MAD WORLD OF WILLIAM GAINES as the basis for the film, right?

    Potrzebie!

community...who were the onus to the destruction of what was ec...maybe this movie will never find an audience...but it needs to be made...what the comics industry, congress and the code did was to set back the art of comics 20 years...

...Only with less talented people involved. I hope this gets the release it deserves, right to the top shelf of my video store. But, sadly, in this world over saturated with quality product, I guess it may have to settle for TV.

...He's obviously been run over by a steamroller... Ah yes... Mad magazine! As much as I loved it as a kid, one time, at my grandmother's house, I found one of my uncle's stash of 1950's Mad comics and those things really blew my young, impressionable mind. After my grandparents died, I looked through the attic to find those comics and the huge collection of vintage metal toys from the 1940's because my grandmother said before she died that they were mine if I wanted them... but one of my scumbag relatives had gotten there first and ganked them all.
