Then I guess I have to go with Ed Brubaker (Marvel) for his kick ass work on DAREDEVIL, CAPTAIN AMERICA and THE IMMORTAL IRON FIST. I especially love his keeping CAPTAIN AMERICA a great read with a lead character who has been taking an extended dirt nap. And IRON FIST is just the tits. Congrats, Ed! Of course, keep in mind, if Segar hadn’t died, um, seventy years ago, things might have turned out differently. But a win’s a win.

What is an "at dollar-sign dollar-sign IE" award? I'm sorry, I don't 5p3@|< |33+.
-
Fun post... really fun post. Made my morning a little brighter.
And, I've got to say, thanks for the push on Umbrella Academy! It was you guys singing its praises here on AICN that got me into the title, and now that I've seen the end, I can only thank you more, and hope more people realize the book is legit!
Also, I heard a rumor that Brand New Day sucks. -
I'm partial to Annihilation Conquest, being as it utilizes the best with Starlord, and adds the awesomeness of Adam Warlock back in books in a cool way.
-
Apparently I haven't been paying attention.
-
Best comic I read all year. Gorgeous covers too. Also loves All Star Superman.
-
Good job guys. Gerard Way for best writer is pretty funny. Nice to see some LOBSTER JOHNSON love, but I loved Hellboy: Darkness Calls more.
-
Spider-Man: One More Day.
-
Thanks--it was a really good read
-
Article would be the proper term.. I Think
-
And that's what the Memoriam section is all about. So, for example, if Gwenyth Paltrow kicked the bucket in 2007, we'd have her listed b/c she's playing Pepper Potts in the upcoming Iron Man flick.
-
One More Day, I gather?
-
Oh my God... that strip was a *huge* part of my childhood comics experience, fueled by the paperback collections I would check out of the local library over and over and over as a kid. LOVED that strip in the 70s/80s. Man, that's depressing.
-
Too many comics-related deaths this year. Not sure why Ringo's made me the most sad. Possibly because he's the only one on that list I actually once met? Could be. Here's hoping the list isn't anywhere near as long next year.
-
Excellent Work as usual, guys. Keep it up!
-
The Assholes pretending to be shocked because Spider-Man made a deal with Satan.
-
for including Jonny Hart and Brant Parker in your memoriam
-
Seriously only one dude mentioning Sinestro Corps War? And no one on CBR? Why is this the only series that is considered "god" by everyone who reads comics except people who write about comics. Your lives are meaningless. Sinestro Corps War was the best story since the days of Sandman and the best Superhero story ever.
-
iron fist, criminal, capt america, daredevil...the guy is solid. quesada will probably go to him in about a year to salvage the amazing spiderman
-
The Guardians confronting the monitor and telling him they bring a power greater than fear, the power of will and that combined with Sodam Yat a Daxamite with incredible strength and courage he will be nearly unstoppable as he becomes the new Ion - The Ultimate Green Lantern.
"The Green Lanterns unleash their greatest weapon" - Guardian
"The new ION" - Guardian
"Now...where were we?" - Sodam Yat -
not by people who write about comics, it's fucking weird. Reading random people's opinions "Best fucking thing i've ever read" then guys on Aicn, chud, cbr and newsarama all act liek it was just another comic. I don't get it. I've never seen this massive a divide between readers and bloggers. it's amazing. People are saying it's the greatest superhero story ever, greater than the dark phoenix saga, galactus saga, DKR and days of future past. What the fuck man! CMON! SINESTRO CORPS WAR! It was the best story last year. and of the decade and of last decade. It was fucking Star Wars meets Superheroes. A Blockbuster movie of the classics calibre in Aliens, Star Wars, Indiana Jones but in Comic book form.
-
Garth Ennis. I'll buy you a pint, old boy.

Nice job staying on top of things AICN! -
which appeared like, what, three minutes ago? Yeah, we're burned.

The greatest thing ever.

Suck it, bitch. You know they've been out for a while this morning.
-
You guys are the ones on the site who actually put some effort into presentation. "Laika" shoutout was
appropriate too...what a great book.
-
You heard me, people? There will be no fucking argument. There will be no bickering, backbiting, whining, bitching, or complaining. There was no better book in 2007 than Green Lantern.

When did comics become tentacle rape hentai junk?

...chill out dude. I'm sure the Green Lantern stuff is really awesome, but if it isn't lighting everybody on fire, placing it above Dark Phoenix and Galactus isn't exactly going to win it any new fans.
-
i just like throwing out our not anti-climatic return one day with a vengeance. hmm...

I'd have to say a tie between Havok and the Beast (once Wolverine was in a class of his own, but over-exposure and glamorization dethroned the character).Havok because his original visual conception and his powers were startlingly new in the original team. Plus, Havok had no business being an X-Man, and true to his hippie-day roots, told Iceman that fighting was HIS hangup (seconds before cutting loose with concentric circles of cosmic force that splattered a Sentinel none of the others had been able to harm). The Beast -- I'm talking the blue, furry, Wolverine-haired, fanged, smart, smart@$$ Beast from AMAZING ADVENTURES and the AVENGERS. This Beast occasionally guest starred in the X-MEN. I heard that some fan fiction made him look like Disney's BEAUTY & THE BEAST-Beast, but I know that good hearted comic book fans have too much testosterone to put up with anything like that.Kitty Pryde? Don't you guys know that you never listen to Claremont? Next, you'll be tellin' me that a de-powered Storm could take Cyclops in a Danger Room fight for leadership.
-
best misogyny since Cerberus. RIP you talented prick.
-
Although, I'm sad to see you cruelly playing with what's left of Schleppy's diseased little mind.
-
Orignally, it was the Talkback League of Assholes. Oddly, someone did the keyboard trip and it seemed funnier. I always think of Alex Cox editing REPO MAN for broadcast TV and discovering that it was much more hilarious with the swear words. Not that @$$ is MUCH more hilarious than "ass". I mean, "ass" is a funny word period. "Ass" always gets a laugh. Add "ass" to most adjectives (and I hate adjectives) and it becomes funny. "Humongous-ass" "lame-ass" "limp-ass" "ridiculous-ass"... C'mon, sing with me!
-
That looked like a lot of work but it was deservedly worth the read. Thank you, thank you.
-
Anyone heard anything on a softcover release?
-
All you closet Hentai lovers are complaining because you see that cover and that's all you can think of. Lovecraft never occur to anyone?

He's 87 years old. Eighty-seven years old!I don't mean that figuratively. John Severin was born in Dec 1921. He's more than a decade older than John McCain!!

a Walter Simonson drawing?

Matt Wagner. Grendel. New 8 issue limited series.
Surely cause for celebration but only one small mention.
What's wrong with this picture? -
Green lantern #25 was just about perfect.

RASL...any thoughts?

... looking back, despite the massive cluster f**ks that did hit in the past year, there was also an amazing amount of good stuff. So much so it is hard to hit it all. A lot of things not mentioned weren't intentionally snubbed. verybody came up with their picks independently. So not like anyone said, "Oh well I'm giving some love to X so you can skip that and throw the spotlight on Y." So Green Lantern or other books being snubbed wasn't intentional. I couldn't give props to every title deserving but assumed, well, someone else will hit that one. Only, oops, they didn't. There Will Be Blood isn't an ounce less great just because it lost Best Pic. Just didn't happen to take the top spot.
By the way, my favorite moment that didn't make the cut for the awards would have to be from Countdown Arena. Vampire Batman giving a menacing villain speech and getting undercut by another Batman throwing a knife into his eye. He starts his menacing up again - "Bah! You think that will stop me?!?!" - only to have his rant againcut off by a knife to his other eye. Then for the trifecta, as he tries one last time to build some menacing momentum, Batman #2 stops him cold again by kicking the knives deeper into his head causing Vampire Bats to exclaim, "Dah! You've stabbed my brain!" Paraphrasing the whole thing a bit but I just loved it. The only thing funnier than a villainous roll being upstaged and ruined is a guy annoyed because hos brain has been stabbed. -
so... are you guys confusing wieringo's covers with someone else's out of respect? because it's okay then, i guess.
-
What a climax. What a fucking Climax and then the teaser. Fuck.
-

There is a new "Green Lantern" cable channel starting...
by rock-me amodeo
yeah, has anyone else heard about it?All Green Lantern. All the time. And other heroes can only appear if they're sportin' a ring. And then they...Okay, I'm just kidding. THERE'S a teaser for you, Messi.
-
It was VERY difficult to choose those "BEST OF"s, and except for BUFFY, I was limiting myself to the Big Two. Who knew that BRAVE and BOLD would get so many kudos? But GREEN LANTERN, NOVA, ASTONISHING X-MEN, BLUE BEETLE.. they were all up there, in several categories...
-
..80th Academy Awards. (For obvious reasons, which i need not go down that road again.) IMO Cap,Ironfist and WWH was fucking fire. Until Brubaker and Epting leave Captain 'A, I'm there.Don't care for the indies but loved the memorium as you guyd did'nt leave anyone out. Shit even Roscoe gets a mention and aside from Kirby, Marshall was my favorite Silver Surfer artist not to mention his stint on GIJoe.Speaking of which Steve (Gerber) made a 30 minute toy commercial into an instant success. R.I.P. guys.
-
there's no link to Blank Label Comics in my Best Publisher nod. Oh well, it's not like it isn't easy to Google, but just in case, the URL is http://www.blanklabelcomics.com/
Enjoy. -
The Morons who approved of the One More Day synopsis. I love Quesada's art but it was wasted on this shit.now I'm questioning his qualifications as editor & cheif, well that and also the silly outcome of Civil Wars,The Mighty Avengers,Captain Marvel back from the dead and some other BS. One More Day was the worst Spidey idea since The Clone Saga, hence the defalco.Keep it up Joe and you'll be benching next to Tom in the soup kitchen.Mark my words!!
-
Spider-man is a huge letdown. I like the writing so far after OMD but still pisses me off of the big flush of Peter's past. I should drop the book but I am an addict. The Civil War and Hulk stuff has been great, you would think they could have waited a bit before fucking over their best character. I mean you can mess with Wolverine's past and bring dead X-men back and forth from death as much as you like but just don't mess with my bread and butter title like Spider-man.
-
Yeah, Prof. was the only guy priasing Sinestro Corps, but did you notice he gave every goddamn award to it? That's gotta count for something. And if nobody else is going to say it, then I will-Where's my Y-The Last Man love?!
-
that you gave regarding OMD, tripe, tripe, tripe!!! I'm really digging Green Lantern & Buffy right now.
-
Best Writer-Brian K. Vaughan-Y-the Last Man, Ex Machina.
Best Artist-Frank Quitely-All Star Superman
Best Ongoing-Y-The Last Man (of course.) followed closely by Thunderbolts, All-Star Superman, Punisher and Astonishing X-Men
Best single issue-Y-The Last Man 58-saddest comic ever.
Best moment-I want to say Y 58 again, but I'll go with the more ass kicking moments instead. If that's the case, then this award becomes difficult for me. I'm stuck between quite a few... Okay, Bullseye getting the shit kicked out of him, The Hulk beating up Black-fucking-Bolt, Cyclops breaking out of space prison, Superman cracking the moon, I'm sure I'm forgetting something... Fuck it. I'll return in a moment with one glorious award. -
Loodabagel's quote of the year-"Congratulations, motherfucker. It's a bitch." Barracuda-Punisher #54. I dare anyone to top those words of beauty. (seriously)
-
That's because he's the only dude who read the fucking thing.
-
One of the very entertaining areas of AICN left...keep up the good work fellas. Glad to see the Frank Queitly love. ALL STAR SUPERMAN is the best Superman stories since the fucking 80's!Messi...Green Lantern Rebirth got me back into comics after a 3 year absence...since than though...ehh.I'm just not that amped about Blackest Night and I think the Ion reveal would've been better had Kyle Rayner not already been him. Plus all this retconning regarding the "emotional spectrum" is killing me.
-
My only addition/change would have been to show a bit more love to Wasteland. Great great great great great series that not many folks seem to be talking about.
-
for favorite artist is a Walt Simonson cover. You can see his signature on the sheriff's leg. Allright, I won't mention it again.
-
not only do you talk nonsense about JLA but maybe you should mention everyone else is psyched about The Blackest Night, don't fool others please. And the whole Ion reveal was cool because Sodam Yat was destined to be the Ultimate Green Lantern and he's a daxamite that's why the reveal was awesome, but you probabl didn't no this, after all you are supporting JLA and the Tino hate is very unobjective.
-
It's comforting to know that "Farley"'s creator remains known outside the SF Bay Area. Thanks for that nod.
-
Every comic fan that I talk to think that it's DC jumping on the Marvel Zombies bandwagon 2 years too late. And don't worry, just 'cause my opinions aren't yours yet doesn't mean they won't be....HAH!And you're wrong, i did know that...doesn't make it nay less sloppy.
-
Yeah man because the people here saying "bring on the blackest night" don't count for nothing, neither do the many posters on CBR, Newsarama and other comic book sites because they all fail to the comic fans you have talked to. Haven't you read the fucking reviews comparing the blackest night teaser to a blockbuster movie teaser. ahhh. you are one of the most recent dumb fucks on this site.
-
...now you're just being an arrogant prick. And that's what I do best. I'm sure you just ate up Countdown, Civil War, and all the other tripe comics is trying to shove down your throat. Plus your objectivity shows in all your Green Lantern posts.some one with another opinion gets vocal and turns the voltage up and you write him off as "a dumb fuck"...ooooooooooh. You're scary when you're irrational.
-
Thor's back and he's pissed! He found out Tony Stark cloned him! He found out there was a Civil War and Iron Man was forcing heroes to register--or else! He found out Clor killed Black Goliath! He gets more pissed when Iron Man demands that Thor register with the government--or else! What's Thor's response? He brings about a million volts of lightning down on Iron Man's head and trashes his armor! Thor tells Iron Man to leave him alone--or else! Tony Stark learns you don't boss around a Thunder God! Iron Man goes after the New Warriors instead! Iron Man may be a douche, but now he's considered a smacked down douche!
-
Let me say no. MZ hasn't been a crazy massive-mega-event in the way that Green Lantern has. Sure, there've been about 30 comics with Marvel zombies since their first appearance, but none were advertised too heavily, and Marvel didn't seem to be holding them in the highest regard. Sure they're fun, but it's nothing earth-shattering, since Marvel doesn't seem to really care about Elseworlds stories. The Blackest Night hype machine is already rolling with full steam and you know that when it hits, it'll be appearing in half the comics DC publishes, including Vertigo titles. Yes, MZ did come first, but that's like saying Dune came before Star Wars. Blackest Night is just going to end up kicking the crap out Marvel Zombies and we all know it.
That's a good fight, Mysteryguest, but I'm sticking with Bullseye and American Eagle. Maybe we should compile a top ten list of great battles? Let's check back tomorrow, old chum. -
That scene from Thunderbolts is fucking GREAT! I've been wanting to see Bullseye get his for a while now, and what a character to give it to him. "You're used to fighing no-powerers, like Daredevil right?"Hey I'm a DC boy first and foremost...but I'm not loving what I've been seeing from the GL wings lately. I loved 52, but Countdown has been crap.
-
Just read the first hardcover and I totally agree with you guys on that book. I'm more of a Marvel-boy by nature, but B&B is everything i want from a DC comic (i.e. it feels like something out of the Timm-verse). I really just picked the book up for Perez's art, but damned if I didn't enjoy that thing more than any superhero book i've read in a long time.
-
the best comic ever!
-
anyone reading freakangels? i am excited about blackest night cuz yeah, like it's been said, sinestro corps war rocked it. hmm...peas.
-
For Warren Ellis you might want to try Whitechapel, which is associated with his online
freakangels comic that blackthoufgt mention. -
It was AWFUL. Sloppy, crude animation, a mess of a storyline... even if the comic didn't exist, and this was seen as an original movie, it would still stink. Look at that early scene of Batman fighting the cult in the church, how cheap and amateurish the animation is; it carries over through the whole film. Wow; I'm really taken aback by how plain bad that was. Each of the three JLU episodes included on the bonus disc were way better than that 'movie.' Thumbs down, way down.
-
Bullseye vs American Eagle, Hulk vs Black Bolt, Thor vs Iron Man (apparently. I didn't see it.) Batman vs not-Bane, Superman vs grouchy Kryptonians (All Star, not Action Comics) Punisher vs Barracuda, Molly Hayes vs Punisher, Cyclops (of all people) vs space dictator, Daredevil vs Gladiator, probably something for Invincible (never read it) and of course, Spider-Man vs editorial. Oh and apparently there was some Sinestro Corps war that was pretty good. Haven't read it.
-
I think it was probably down to the art. Ivan Reis is great at the cosmic space scenes but he didn't seem entirely comfortable with staging a fight in a more realistic locale. Anyway, I thought SINESTRO CORPS started with its best issue and finished on its weakest. It was fun superhero stuff, though nothing ground-breaking. And there's no way having seven differently-colored corps running around doesn't start to get a *little* silly.
-
I always thought the Green Lanterns' power rings were devices the little blue guys made that get their energy from the bearer's willpower. But okay, this willpower (which isn't actually an emotion, btw) is actually part of an emotional power spectrum whereby any strong feeling can be converted into light-based power (how New Age). So...why does every corps choose to wear rings and uniforms like the Green Lanterns? Why do they all decide to be part of an army? Can anyone use this kind of power or does it have to be released by some kind of machine like the power ring? Come to think of it, why do all these emotions correspond with the color spectrum that humans can see, despite the thousands of different species that are presumably members? And, uh, I'll stop there. I mean, credit to Johns for doing something big and new, but I kind of prefer the simple appeal of an solitary intergalactic police force chosen for their goodness and inner strength.
-
sodom yat v. superman-prime was fun.
-
I also enjoyed Bucky beating the shit out of bikers in Cap 26 or 27
