Joe Hill's LOCKE & KEY comic already picked up by Dimension!!!

Published at:  Feb 26, 2008 12:38:45 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I'm becoming a big fan of Joe Hill. Big fan. I'm a huge Stephen King nut, so that's why I decided to give his kid a shot with HEART-SHAPED BOX, which kicked my ass. That book read like the kind of stuff his dad used to write in the late '70s and early '80s. I've been devouring his newest, a short story collection that is diverse and has a strikingly original voice. Check it below.

I can't wait to get back home so I can hit Austin Books and pick up this comic book, LOCKE & KEY. Joe Hill authored the story, a dark fantasy about three children who seemingly live alone in a New England mansion. They discover each door leads to something different, some giving them powers, some changing gender and race... and one hiding a horrible beast.

Dimension has picked up the rights to this series already to be adapted into a film franchise. Can't wait to give it a read. The book just hit stands, the next ish due out on the 5th of March. Thoughts?

New England? Ghost Stories? SOLD, baby!

    by superduper3000

Seriously, if you've got a spooky New England backdrop and mystical doorways always do it for me. Just as long as there's no talking lions or feminine elf/hobbits... kind of sick of those...anyone else?

    Even scarier...yeah, I said it!

And I guess his brother Owen is going to be teaching at a writers conference I am going to this summer.

Anyone read any of Owen's stuff? I am under the impression that he is the one in the family that stepped away from horror.

Why are ghosts always in New England? Do they have conventions there?

Ghost stories in the US usually come from New England because that is where Europeans have lived th longest. Also, there is something about the backwoods of NE that is genuinely creepy. There have been a couple of papers published on this, I could try to find them for you if you want more information.

Probably wouldn't have sold a hell of a lot of books. Would have made for one hell of an excuse though if the books sucked...

Just read the comic yesterday. Great stuff. Awesome first issue. Joe Hill stands on his own, even in comparison to his father. Check it out.

Actually, that short story collection was out prior to Heart-Shaped Box. Maybe it's been re-released to capitalize on Hill's new notoriety. Either way, it's good stuff.

Maybe "Joe Hill" is another Stephen King pseudonym.

    No offense, but

Joe Hill seems like a nice guy, but to put it bluntly, he isn't very good. No one would be paying any attention to him if it weren't for his DNA. People like to argue with me about this, but it seems pretty obvious: People love King, and they want to annoint his son his rightful heir.

But literary horror is dead. No one is willing to pay for it. Name one new horror author besides Hill in the last fifteen years that broke the NY Times bestseller list. (I'll save you the trouble. There weren't any.) Do you really think there were no other talented authors publishing horror novels in the last decade and a half? It's not talent, people. It's the pedigree.

All of them I've tried. I bought the 20th Cent Ghosts collection in England before it came out here -- before anyone knew he was Steve King's son. I had no idea why he was getting so much acclaim, but I like horror, so I try to keep up.

From the 20th Cent Ghosts collection I recall reading "The Black Phone," "Abraham's Boys," "20th Century Ghosts," and "Best New Horror." I didn't finish the collection, but I remember those. To me the stories seemed manipulative, implausible, and poorly written. Couldn't understand what all the fuss was about.

A few months later, the news broke and Joe Hill is King's son. The world is suddenly his oyster. HEART SHAPED BOX came out and I figured what the hell. This time I didn't shell out cash, though; I picked up a copy at the library. But I still couldn't get into it. A rock star protagonist? Seriously? Seemed like a joke, like KISS VERSUS THE PHANTOM or something. I just couldn't buy it, or anything that happened in it. In my view, there's no reason for anyone to like him except for his lineage.

I liked House as a child - sounds like Joe Hill is taking horror into modernity - not sure if it'll be interesting...just...modern.

    by performingmonkey

I liked Heart-Shaped Box but to say it was the calibre of King in his prime is a gross overstatement. It was probably closest to Cujo (not just because of the dog thing) in that it was a short, quick-paced horror with way too much told in flashbacks instead of focussing on the current action. Plenty of blood though, which I liked! It ripped from around 3 or 4 King books.

Not follow your muse simply because a parent did? That's one of the most idiotic statements I have ever read in a TB - and that's going some... Joe Hill isn't going to get published because he's Steve's boy - no publisher is going to bank on that - hell, not all of Steve's books hit the bestseller list - writing is hard, hard work - you have to love it to do it. End of rant.
